Pre-Season

Midweek Friendlies Round-Up – Monday and Tuesday

Eight Premier League teams were in action over Monday and Tuesday as the friendlies schedule continues to pick up pace. Olivier Giroud found the net once again for Arsenal, Nicolas Anelka struck twice for West Brom, Man United lost for the second time in three games under David Moyes, while Shola Ameobi scored for the second match running as Newcastle managed a draw in Portugal. Here’s a brief round-up of the action, with some relevant quotes thrown in:

Nagoya Grampus 1 Arsenal 3
Olivier Giroud took his pre-season haul to six goals in three games by notching the Gunners’ opener with just three minutes on the clock, courtesy of a Tomas Rosicky assist. A foul on the Frenchman allowed Ryo Miyaichi to score from the spot, while Theo Walcott scored the third – his second strike in three appearances. Wojciech Szczesny (back) and Laurent Koscielny (knock) missed out for the visitors and with Thomas Vermaelen absent from the tour with a back injury, Bacary Sagna filled in at centre-half alongside Per Mertesacker. Wenger also confirmed that Nacho Monreal “looks likely” to miss the start of the season with a back problem, leaving Kieran Gibbs as the only cover for the left-back berth.

After the match, the Frenchman spoke to the club’s official website and attributed his flourishing form to an increase in self-belief:

“Confidence makes all the difference. Confidence is the first thing you have to work on, you have to work on your mental [side of the game] and keep going. It is something you must have when you are a football player. “I don’t really feel different compared to last year but maybe I know my teammates very well now so I am more confident and I feel ready on the pitch. I do things naturally and we find each other better on the pitch. We have a better relationship now and I really want to do my best for this season.”

Puskas FC Academy 0 West Brom 3
Nicolas Anelka was at the double as the Baggies swept aside their Portuguese opponents on Monday afternoon. Having rolled out a 4-3-1-2 formation for the previous game against Hamburg, Steve Clarke changed system again and began the game with a 4-3-3, fielding Shane Long and Markus Rosenberg on either side of the Frenchman. Clarke made seven changes just after the hour mark and tinkered with his team’s shape once more, moving to a 3-5-2 for the last 30 minutes. Graham Dorrans slotted home the third from the spot late on but it was Anelka who was the recipient of Clarke’s post-match praise; an indication, perhaps, that the 5.5 priced Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward is set to play a significant part for the midlands outfit in the season ahead:

“I never had a doubt about Nicolas because I’d worked with him at Chelsea. I was with Avram Grant when we bought him in the January. So I knew the type of person he was, the type of player he is. I’ve one or two good contacts around the football world and I checked him out when he was at Juventus. The fitness statistics and information I got about his fitness was that he was one of the best trainers. He was one of the top performers, in terms of fitness stats, at Juventus. If you can do that at Juventus then you’re fit enough for us…Where he’s been in the football world and what he’s done in the football world tells you that he’s a top quality player and we’re just happy to have him in our group this season.”

Yokohama 3 Man United 2
David Moyes’ side suffered their second pre-season defeat yesterday afternoon. The United boss left out the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick, while Robin Van Persie lasted 45 minutes before being withdrawn as a precaution. Youngster Jessie Lingard continued his impressive form with a third goal in the last two matches, with the visitors’ second coming courtesy of an own goal from centre-half Masakazu Tashiro. Moyes was able to hand Chris Smalling and Ashley Young their first taste of action after both recovered from injury, while Shinji Kagawa climbed off the bench to make his first appearances of the summer after an extended break. After the game, the United boss rolled out an update on the injury situation up front:

“We’ve got a couple of wee worries. Robin just felt his thigh in the first half and we didn’t want to take any chances. Danny Welbeck felt his groin when he came on and we’ve just got to make sure they’re all okay especially with so many games coming up. We’ve still got a few games to play before the season starts when we get back home. As far as we know Wayne [Rooney] is coming on, He’s started light jogging and the feedback I’m getting from the physios is that he’s progressing. Hopefully those dates are still on track.”

Hamburg 1 West Ham 3
The Hammers bounced back from their weekend thrashing at the hands of Mainz 05 to register the fifth win in six pre-season matches. Sam Allardyce started Razvan Rat and Guy Demel in the full-back roles, while James Collins returned after being given the weekend off for personal reasons. Up top, Ravel Morrison and Matt Jarvis were given the nod on either side of Modibo Maiga and Jarvis proved hugely instrumental in the result, supplying assists for all three of the visitors’ goals. Alou Diarra opened the scoring and was quickly followed by James Tomkins before Morrison added the third after his fellow wide man had been fouled in the box – Diarra has now notched twice in pre-season, the same number as Kevin Nolan, while Morrison has found the net on three occasions; more than any of his team mates.

Ahead of a strong run of opening six fixtures, Jarvis – who is 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League – earned the post-match praise of Hammers assistant boss Neil McDonald:

“Matt Jarvis was in excellent form. He got at his man, he crossed the ball, he took his man on and he drove into the box. That’s what we’ve been trying to get him to do since he came to the football club. Hopefully the penny’s dropped and we’ll have a few more performances like that where he’s creating goals and setting chances up for everybody.”

Sporting Braga 0 Hull 0
The Tigers registered their second successive goalless draw in Portugal last night. Steve Bruce’s side had failed to find a way past Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and, despite handing new boy Danny Graham 60 minutes as he builds up his fitness, Hull once again toiled up top. Sone Aluko impressed after climbing off the bench at the break in a game that saw Bruce utilise South African midfielder Daylon Claasen as a trialist.

Luton 2 Aston Villa 0
Having drawn their opening four matches, Paul Lambert’s side slipped to a first pre-season loss at Kenilworth Road last night. The Villa boss named a second-string starting XI aside from Christian Benteke, who was making his first appearance of the summer as he builds up his fitness. The Belgian lasted 45 minutes before making way, but despite changing the remaining 10 starters on the hour mark, Lambert watched his side fail to turn around the deficit. With many fringe players handed game time, the Villa boss wasn’t too concerned over the result; instead, he took time out to focus on Benteke’s return and revealed he is optimistic over the fitness of a number of omissions ahead of Villa’s next match against Crewe:

“The pleasing thing was Christian being back. Some of his touches were brilliant. He had 45 minutes. He’s only done a bit of training. He’s still got to work on match fitness but that 45 minutes will do him the world of good…We have too many injures at the minute. When you look at the ones missing – the likes of Okore, Tonev, Agbonlahor, Weimann, Helenius – there are a lot of big players absent. We want to get them back. Hopefully there might be one or two back for Friday. We will have to see how that progresses and see how it goes.”

Pacos de Ferreira 1 Newcastle 1
Shola Ameobi scored for the second consecutive match as the Magpies scraped a draw after going down to 10 men. Alan Pardew handed Fabricio Coloccini, Mathieu Debuchy and Hatem Ben Arfa their first game time of the summer, though the Argentine failed to make it to the interval after receiving his marching orders in a bad-tempered affair. Moussa Sissoko was once again fielded behind a lone striker as Pardew rolled out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at left-back and Steven Taylor in the centre of defence. Davide Santon – fielded in an advanced position as a sub for Ben Arfa at the break – supplied the assist for Ameobi’s strike, with Pardew making seven changes in total as the game progressed.

Gillingham 0 Crystal Palace 3
Ian Holloway handed new boy Jose Campana his debut, while the Palace boss fielded four trialists in a comfortable win last night. Campana was afforded corner kick duties in the first 45 minutes and had a hand in the opener, when his delivery was cleared by the hosts only for Dean Moxey to find the net. Holloway then changed his entire starting XI at the break and saw Stephen Dobbie contribute with a goal and assist, while Quincy Owusu-Abeyie (trialist) settled the matter with the Eagles’ third.

Chadli... injury prone but more attacking, stats from previous seasons are quite good albeit in a weaker league. He needs to settle in quickly though.

Fantasy Football Scout Daily Hot Topic

How much does the phrase ‘coverage’ effect your team selection. How important is it to have a player from the teams with the best fixtures or top four status?

Surely Bale and RVP’s pricing means that covering the best players at the best clubs is impossible.

If you can’t afford Walcott is it really worth investing in Wilshire just to get coverage? If you can’t afford RVP, is Kagawa really a good alternative for those who preach at the church of coverage?

(Today's topic was devised by In Tommy We Trust...thanks Tommy 🙂 )

it's one of the most misguided policies. Kagawa might be worth it if he's playing, Wilshere almost certainly won't be. If you have Bale and RVP you can afford max two other big hitters, meaning you won't have a forward from two of chelsea/city/arse/liverpool. So you just have to rotate between those at the right times. Because Norwich's best player will score more than Arsenal's fifth best player.

I think Aspas is probably the most widespread example of this on this site. Most likely to be negative OOP out on the wing, maybe gets one game up top if Sturridge isn't fit, but pretty soon he'll be heavily outscored by a lot of people in his price range.

on what basis? He's not going to be their main goalscorer, creative force or set piece taker. There are players for 7-7.5 who are nailed on main threats and penalty takers for their teams.

The only time I apply the term coverage is when picking keepers or defenders. I don't think it matters when choosing Midfielders and forwards - I pick the players that I think will score the most points not so I can 'cover' a certain team.

Therefore I would go nowhere near Wilshire. Walcott will most likely considerably outscore him, so if I only had the funds to get someone in Wilshire's price bracket I would most definitely look elsewhere for another option that will score better than Jack.

To be frank, and I don't mean Lampard, If Wishire starts playing in the hole (where he should play) and stays fit and free of injuries, he'll become a massive bargain this season. There is so much assist and goal potential with this guy, as long as he stays injury free.

I would say if you have a list of things that effect team selection I would keep 'coverage' on there but keep it way down the bottom.

My harsh lesson in coverage was last year when I wanted Swansea coverage because of their good fixtures and I went for Graham over Michu. The 1st game Swansea won 5-0 and Graham got 2 points.

      Thanks 😳

For me coverage is only applicable when you apply the fixtures on top of it. I wouldn't pick someone like Wilshere though just to have an arsenal player as there will be a better option from a lower club that has the fixtures to back him up.

I do think we have a problem though wit our initial squads as Spurs/Liverpool/Citeh/Arsenal/Everton all have good opening fixtures and on top of that there's the RVP debate which would mean you can't cover all the above sides

But even assuming you buy a play from a club with good fixtures, that doesn't mean you completely cover the attacking potential of that team.

Someone like Bale or RVP, who have high goal involvement for their respective sides, are the closest you can come to arguing that cover is relevant, but when players have low goal involvement (e.g. less than 40%), you're not really covering the attacking potential of their team at all.

But you were right in wanting to cover that club. Picking the right player to cover is the issue, not the wanting the cover.

For example, I want an Arsenal player to cover their opening fixtures. I'm punting on Giroud atm. If he fails miserably and Walcott bangs in points after points, the problem was the selection, not the wanting to cover Arsenal?

I see your point, but then we're talking about fixtures.

When you're considering players, you look at their individual potential, and part of that is to do with the relative difficulty of the oppenents they play.

If you start picking teams to buy players from with the fixtures in your mind and then pick your players from those teams, I think you're making a mistake

      Coverage, Schmoverage 😉

But in all seriousness, I think it's a flawed concept unless you're talking about defenders. What people mean (I hope) when they talk about coverage is getting the main points scorers from teams who have nice fixtures. This is the same as simply getting the players you think will score a lot of points.

Anyone who talks about getting Lucas for Liverpool coverage, Wilshere for Arsenal coverage, etc. is a complete mystery to me.

Yeah. Covering a side with a player you are only picking on the reasons you can afford him is absurd. The art of coverage is fundamentally tied in with fixtures. I personally think the term has a bad rep 😉 because it has been applied wrongly by many

I think the term is unnecessary - if you apply the rule of 'do I think player x score more than player y' across the board then that's all you need - the rest is just glitter and jazz-hands 😉

This is correct, never should a defensive midfielder be considered attacking coverage. And as Tinkerman points out, it is related the individuals of a team that have a high goal involvement. Sometimes this is more than one player. Giroud or Walcott would be the serious players that are talked about when you consider coverage (Assuming Giroud is nailed on to start the season).

Coverage means the following to me:
1 - a team that has a good run and is sound in the back, you want a cheap nailed on defender for cover. If there isn't - like united back line - then move on.
2 - a team that produces significant attacking points and has a good run - you want cover - a player who will be significantly involved in the points - cazorla giroud or Walcott - not wilsare - you don't want someone who is only likely to get scrapes.
3 - if points divide between too many players - no point in cover - for example spurs post bale - really no point in gambling on paulinio or Dempsey or chaldi just for the sake of coverage. Just move on.
4 - if a team does not get many points or has a so-sorun of fixtures, however most of their points go to one player - like benteke last year, or maybe snod - that's more important than covering a good team.
5 - price matters - if the only good united cover is Rvp for 14 but it ruins your team - aye leave it.
6 - rotation matters - getting cover of teams that all have away games at the same time kills the concept of cover.

Ce tu. cover? Yes. But good cover, for the right price and for teams that don't share points between too many players.

Coverage is mainly only important when one of the top teams is going about to embark on a run of really easy fixtures and you will need a capt from this team (more important if the attackers from this team have high ownership).

Another time coverage might apply is when a team with budget players turn out to have a really tight defence. You will need a defender from these teams if you want to keep up with those around you are consistent defensive points from cheap defenders can mean you end up getting left behind very quickly by your competitors. (I guess this works for big teams defences to a certain extent also but usually the big defenders are close enough in scoring and price to not be that important)

The only other time I find it anyway important is for dbl gw's when there might be a team with two good defensive fixtures or two potential attacking point bonanza fixtures. Picking an attacking player is not coverage in this instance imo you need THE attacking player as he will likely be made capt by the majority of the better players. Any defender will usually do (its not always the more expensive or more attacking one that scores the most - see Enrique and GJ last year and Walker BAE the year before) to cover the potential double cs for the fixtures.

So in summation cheap defenders from defensively resilient teams need to be covered and top attackers from teams with plum fixtures need to be covered (depending on their ownership*)

In my opinion coverage is not important at all. You just need to pick the best performer players in your price range. The last three seasons I tripled up on Stoke defenders when they had good fixtures because they were the most likely of the 5m defenders to get cleansheets. Obviously this is a high risk strategy, especially with defenders as you'll get some weeks with 18+ points from your back 3 and other weeks less than 6 but if you're not going for the cup it's not a problem.
Anyone who gets cheap players from the top teams is crazy. They are cheap because they are not generally involved in the goals and/or are rotation threats. 3.3% of people have chosen Hernandez - what's the point in Man U cover when he spends most of the season on the bench. For the same price you could have Berbatov playing up top every game, integral to a large proportion of the goals and also on penalties. This is an extreme example and hopefully no one on here is in the 3.3% but all the RMTs that throw up people like Lukaku and Kagawa are nearly as bad. Neither of those players are currently nailed on and you're setting yourself up for some disappointments along the way unless you have some serious inside knowledge. I can see lots of 5 min cameos for players like these, or if you're really lucky they will stay on the bench and you'll get to play Chester and Thomas.

I think there are a few ways of looking at coverage.

Firstly, I definately don't agree with just 'covering' a team like Jonty says, and getting Wilshire for Arsenal cover. That is a doomed policy imo.

However, I do see merit in coverage like so:
Currently I have Walcott in midfield and Sturridge upfront. Of the two I think Walcott will score more.
I am considering switching to Silva and Giroud, and in this case, the question I ask is will Giroud 'cover' the majority of Walcott's points?
If I think he will score lets say only 5 less than Walcott, then I'd be happy to bring in Giroud as I think Silva will outscore Sturridge, and I'm not likely to miss out on many points if any at all.
This scenario is a tangent to team coverage, its more like coverage of certain players by team mates

      Hope that makes sense

Nope none at all to me. This is exactly why coverage makes no sense. If walcott and giroud score more than walcott + sturridge or silva + giroud or silva and sturridge then you get the two players from the same team as they score more. You completely forget you ever heard the term coverage imo

It's about getting the best value combination of players for £100m. It's almost irrelevant which team they play for. I say 'almost' because there are only so many BPs to go around in each match and the more players you have in a single match the less BPs you can potentially win... but the chances of that becoming significant are incredibly slim.

You could easily end up with a situation where the top 11 value players in the league includes Mata, Lampard and Rooney at Chelsea, or Mig/Coutinho/Sturridge at Liverpool or etc. etc. or more likely a cheap team doing much better than expected and offering stupidly high value.

I do tend to spread across the big teams at the start of the season, but honestly it's only so I have more of a reason to watch the matches.

Mmm, I didn't see the game but I'd be surprised.

According to NUFC.com who were at the match it was a Gouffran assist too, but like I said, I haven't seen the goal:

After the break, United levelled 15 minutes into the second period when Davide Santon's forward header gave Yoan Gouffran some work to do on the left of the Pacos box.

Gouffran shrugged off his marker and found Shola in the penalty area who supplied a powerful finish to blast past substitute goalkeeper Matias Degra hight into the roof of the net.

At risk of being criticized, i am re-posting this. May be of interest to the boffins among us 🙂

Cromulenti started an interesting discussion earlier about how to judge player value. The argument was that pts/£m is a flawed concept because we have to spend a minimum amount on each player (4m DEF; 4.5m MID etc). Therefore the discretionary spend is price minus minimum spend - that number is surely a better way to judge price. I agree with this approach wholeheartedly.

However, what was missed in this very interesting post, was a similar concept relating to points scored. In baseball (shudder) there is a concept known as VORP - Value Over Replacement Player - designed as a means to judge the contribution a player makes to a team relative to a replacement squad player. In FPL a 'replacement player' might be a notional nailed on 4m DEF, and one could calculate from historical data what such a player might be expected to contribute in fantasy points. That notional replacement value would then become the baseline for calculating points scored. Then value would be (pts minus replacement points)/(price minus minimum spend).

Obviously it would take some serious work to calculate the baseline points for each position, but this would result in a much more thorough analysis of value.

    Thoughts?

No - misunderstood you. Replacement player is the cheapest nailed on player for that position. Take GK for example. If you studied all the nailed on GKs from last season, replacement would be the least points scored by any member of that group.

In the comments section you can see a link to something Chris Glover did before so my idea was not a new concept by any means. The comments are interesting and I do like your extra take on the points base value too.

Just had a small tinker with my team and looking at 5m midfielder options. Noticed Darren Gibson was 5m. I'm guessing injury and rotation uncertainty is the cause of his low price, but even from a withdrawn role he's seemed very attacking whenever I've seen him. No love for Ruiz as a cheap striker option? I know he plays with and behind Berb, but still plenty of potential I reckon.

      There's not many options in that price bracket, I'll give you that. He's just very hit and miss.. 2, 2, 2, 2, 14, 5, 2, 2, 2, 2

Do you think Giroud's pre-season form will continue into the season?

I am reminded of Michu's pre-season last year, which prompted several of us to pick him for GW1.

I picked him because he was the top goal scoringidfielder in la logs the year before.
As for Giroud. He could be a great option this year. All depends on who arsenal end up buying. I can see him getting between 15-20 in the premier league if he gets enough game time.

He really wasn't as bad as people make out last season. If Arsenal don't sign another striker I'll be very tempted by him.
