Eight Premier League teams were in action over Monday and Tuesday as the friendlies schedule continues to pick up pace. Olivier Giroud found the net once again for Arsenal, Nicolas Anelka struck twice for West Brom, Man United lost for the second time in three games under David Moyes, while Shola Ameobi scored for the second match running as Newcastle managed a draw in Portugal. Here’s a brief round-up of the action, with some relevant quotes thrown in:

Nagoya Grampus 1 Arsenal 3
Olivier Giroud took his pre-season haul to six goals in three games by notching the Gunners’ opener with just three minutes on the clock, courtesy of a Tomas Rosicky assist. A foul on the Frenchman allowed Ryo Miyaichi to score from the spot, while Theo Walcott scored the third – his second strike in three appearances. Wojciech Szczesny (back) and Laurent Koscielny (knock) missed out for the visitors and with Thomas Vermaelen absent from the tour with a back injury, Bacary Sagna filled in at centre-half alongside Per Mertesacker. Wenger also confirmed that Nacho Monreal “looks likely†to miss the start of the season with a back problem, leaving Kieran Gibbs as the only cover for the left-back berth.

After the match, the Frenchman spoke to the club’s official website and attributed his flourishing form to an increase in self-belief:

“Confidence makes all the difference. Confidence is the first thing you have to work on, you have to work on your mental [side of the game] and keep going. It is something you must have when you are a football player. “I don’t really feel different compared to last year but maybe I know my teammates very well now so I am more confident and I feel ready on the pitch. I do things naturally and we find each other better on the pitch. We have a better relationship now and I really want to do my best for this season.”

Puskas FC Academy 0 West Brom 3
Nicolas Anelka was at the double as the Baggies swept aside their Portuguese opponents on Monday afternoon. Having rolled out a 4-3-1-2 formation for the previous game against Hamburg, Steve Clarke changed system again and began the game with a 4-3-3, fielding Shane Long and Markus Rosenberg on either side of the Frenchman. Clarke made seven changes just after the hour mark and tinkered with his team’s shape once more, moving to a 3-5-2 for the last 30 minutes. Graham Dorrans slotted home the third from the spot late on but it was Anelka who was the recipient of Clarke’s post-match praise; an indication, perhaps, that the 5.5 priced Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward is set to play a significant part for the midlands outfit in the season ahead:

“I never had a doubt about Nicolas because I’d worked with him at Chelsea. I was with Avram Grant when we bought him in the January. So I knew the type of person he was, the type of player he is. I’ve one or two good contacts around the football world and I checked him out when he was at Juventus. The fitness statistics and information I got about his fitness was that he was one of the best trainers. He was one of the top performers, in terms of fitness stats, at Juventus. If you can do that at Juventus then you’re fit enough for us…Where he’s been in the football world and what he’s done in the football world tells you that he’s a top quality player and we’re just happy to have him in our group this season.”

Yokohama 3 Man United 2
David Moyes’ side suffered their second pre-season defeat yesterday afternoon. The United boss left out the likes of Rio Ferdinand and Michael Carrick, while Robin Van Persie lasted 45 minutes before being withdrawn as a precaution. Youngster Jessie Lingard continued his impressive form with a third goal in the last two matches, with the visitors’ second coming courtesy of an own goal from centre-half Masakazu Tashiro. Moyes was able to hand Chris Smalling and Ashley Young their first taste of action after both recovered from injury, while Shinji Kagawa climbed off the bench to make his first appearances of the summer after an extended break. After the game, the United boss rolled out an update on the injury situation up front:

“We’ve got a couple of wee worries. Robin just felt his thigh in the first half and we didn’t want to take any chances. Danny Welbeck felt his groin when he came on and we’ve just got to make sure they’re all okay especially with so many games coming up. We’ve still got a few games to play before the season starts when we get back home. As far as we know Wayne [Rooney] is coming on, He’s started light jogging and the feedback I’m getting from the physios is that he’s progressing. Hopefully those dates are still on track.”

Hamburg 1 West Ham 3
The Hammers bounced back from their weekend thrashing at the hands of Mainz 05 to register the fifth win in six pre-season matches. Sam Allardyce started Razvan Rat and Guy Demel in the full-back roles, while James Collins returned after being given the weekend off for personal reasons. Up top, Ravel Morrison and Matt Jarvis were given the nod on either side of Modibo Maiga and Jarvis proved hugely instrumental in the result, supplying assists for all three of the visitors’ goals. Alou Diarra opened the scoring and was quickly followed by James Tomkins before Morrison added the third after his fellow wide man had been fouled in the box – Diarra has now notched twice in pre-season, the same number as Kevin Nolan, while Morrison has found the net on three occasions; more than any of his team mates.

Ahead of a strong run of opening six fixtures, Jarvis – who is 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League – earned the post-match praise of Hammers assistant boss Neil McDonald:

“Matt Jarvis was in excellent form. He got at his man, he crossed the ball, he took his man on and he drove into the box. That’s what we’ve been trying to get him to do since he came to the football club. Hopefully the penny’s dropped and we’ll have a few more performances like that where he’s creating goals and setting chances up for everybody.”

Sporting Braga 0 Hull 0
The Tigers registered their second successive goalless draw in Portugal last night. Steve Bruce’s side had failed to find a way past Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday and, despite handing new boy Danny Graham 60 minutes as he builds up his fitness, Hull once again toiled up top. Sone Aluko impressed after climbing off the bench at the break in a game that saw Bruce utilise South African midfielder Daylon Claasen as a trialist.

Luton 2 Aston Villa 0
Having drawn their opening four matches, Paul Lambert’s side slipped to a first pre-season loss at Kenilworth Road last night. The Villa boss named a second-string starting XI aside from Christian Benteke, who was making his first appearance of the summer as he builds up his fitness. The Belgian lasted 45 minutes before making way, but despite changing the remaining 10 starters on the hour mark, Lambert watched his side fail to turn around the deficit. With many fringe players handed game time, the Villa boss wasn’t too concerned over the result; instead, he took time out to focus on Benteke’s return and revealed he is optimistic over the fitness of a number of omissions ahead of Villa’s next match against Crewe:

“The pleasing thing was Christian being back. Some of his touches were brilliant. He had 45 minutes. He’s only done a bit of training. He’s still got to work on match fitness but that 45 minutes will do him the world of good…We have too many injures at the minute. When you look at the ones missing – the likes of Okore, Tonev, Agbonlahor, Weimann, Helenius – there are a lot of big players absent. We want to get them back. Hopefully there might be one or two back for Friday. We will have to see how that progresses and see how it goes.”

Pacos de Ferreira 1 Newcastle 1
Shola Ameobi scored for the second consecutive match as the Magpies scraped a draw after going down to 10 men. Alan Pardew handed Fabricio Coloccini, Mathieu Debuchy and Hatem Ben Arfa their first game time of the summer, though the Argentine failed to make it to the interval after receiving his marching orders in a bad-tempered affair. Moussa Sissoko was once again fielded behind a lone striker as Pardew rolled out a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa at left-back and Steven Taylor in the centre of defence. Davide Santon – fielded in an advanced position as a sub for Ben Arfa at the break – supplied the assist for Ameobi’s strike, with Pardew making seven changes in total as the game progressed.

Gillingham 0 Crystal Palace 3
Ian Holloway handed new boy Jose Campana his debut, while the Palace boss fielded four trialists in a comfortable win last night. Campana was afforded corner kick duties in the first 45 minutes and had a hand in the opener, when his delivery was cleared by the hosts only for Dean Moxey to find the net. Holloway then changed his entire starting XI at the break and saw Stephen Dobbie contribute with a goal and assist, while Quincy Owusu-Abeyie (trialist) settled the matter with the Eagles’ third.

I'm quite tempted by having three £7m players up front in Aspas, Kone and RvW.

It goes against the grain, in that I'd usually want a big hitter, but I'm not sure RVP and Aguero are worth the cash.

It allows me 4 big hitters in midfield and a decent defence though.

Anyone else going down this route?

Been pondering, just worried about lack of flexibility in moving to a £9m plus striker if I need to.

Have been looking and it is a bit daunting when lining them up -- Lukaku, Berbatov, Lambert make it appear much more palatable for only 2m more.

I am going a bit light on strikers as well.....
Berbatov, Giroud and Anelka which evens to an average of 7.16 per striker, not far from yours.

I might play a wildcard early (which I usually do) when I see which other budget players have settled, and seeing as the fixture list swings in favour of teams like Swansea then.

I had Aspas... but went with Anelka instead for now.
Anelka should start, Aspas is not sure about his position or playing time yet (Sturridge and Suarez causes uncertainty), I like the idea of getting some heavy defenders in with the good fixtures of spurs and Arsenal.... plus the idea of Baines OoP.

I think you may regret it with the lack of price flexibility.

What if Aguero, Sturridge or Torres start scoring? Your 7.0 x3 price point doesn't offer any give.

From my analysis he gets about the same as Yaya Toure, Walcott gets 6.22 BPS/game, Yaya 6.20, Silva 6.34, Bale 6.44, Santi 7.61, just for some perspective. Reasonably average among the heavier hitters,

Perhaps its because there is so much competition. A system that rewards passing, touches, etc...is really going to favour a range of players at Arsenal. Also pts for goals are worth less for mids than forwards.

      It could be that.

Good stuff. Is the just the total BPS, or the actual bonus the players would have got?

Total BPS isn't the same as the amount of bonus that would have been awarded under the new system!

Totals - but they underline the underlying trends.

Each match will now be marked very differently, imo.

Last season's points per 90 min (not inclduing bonus)...

              Wally: 6.71

              Caz: 5.07

Even if Caz got 1 bonus point more than Wally every game, Wally would still be the one to have.

My first take on a RVP team! 3-4-3. I don't think it looks that horrible, the defense and GK is what I would go for even without RVP to be fair.

but as you ask, I think Lukaku will be the main man for Chelsea.
I will get Graham, lemme finish, as you will know when to bench him, you will rarely have pts. on bench, and I think he will get 10goals, and 5.5m for 10 goals, that's value

Nice! Kind of similar set up here...going for RVP over bale and a slightly weaker defence perhaps and a gamble on Bony. Gonna take Kone at 7 mill... He should be pretty settled...shown he can score in the prem and should get better service...probably hasn't even had to move house going from Wigan to Everton. I'm guessing he'll hit the ground running!

Here's mine at the minute: but like you it will get changed about 10 times a day until the evening of the 16th where I'll probably not be able to make my mind up and spend all night pulling my hair out!

      Boruc,
      Coleman, Merts, Turner
      Wally, Cout, Snoddy, Haz
      Kone, RVP, Bony

      Mannone, Thomas, Parr, Chester.

      What do you reckon?!

        Not bad at all!

Problem I have is with those strikers, especially Bony. If you downgraded him to someone like Rodriguez, then you could afford to upgrade Parr to Clyne and Chester to Collins. The extra 1.0m could be used to upgrade J Rod to someone like Aspas/RvW. Hope that helps 🙂

Thanks! I see your logic...Not sure I want to double up on Liverpool just yet. I want to see what happens with Suarez and see who else they get in if he does go. I have been tempted by RVW though, will be interesting to see how he fares throughout pre-season. I just have a big gut instinct about bony though and would hate to see him have a great start and go up in price and have to save FT's to tinker around. It's going to be a long 3 weeks of pondering!! :/

I keep trying to get some Everton coverage into this team. Any advice please? Doosra it is since I saw your team that I can't get Everton out of my head.

    Stekelenburg/(Krul)
    Enrique/Zabaleta/Koscielny/Collins/(Shaw)
    Walcott/Hazard (c)/Bale (vc)/Ramirez/(Thomas)
    Aguero/Anelka/(Graham)

I know I have 2 cheap forwards but this is in response to how difficult it is this year to choose premium forwards ........ My 4 cheap attacking players also rotate nicely.

Philthy - they are filthy! 😀

Ramirez, in my opinion, is the worst pick going, followed closely by Hernandez. You are paying 6.0 for a 5.5 midfielder.

My choice is Osman, but Pienaar or even bloody Mirallas would work.

Graham is a disaster. Do something else. 🙂

It's a good team, but you have invested a LOT of money in that defence. Maybe look at getting a 9.5 combo like Foster/Ruddy and Boruc, or alternatively a 9.0 combo like Mannone and Boruc. Collins and Shaw is a GREAT rotation, but I think you need to get rid of one of the big 3 you have there. I would suggest Zaba, and get Coleman instead for your Everton coverage. This frees up 2.0m which should be able to get you either Mirallas or Kone if you want more Everton cover. Hope that helps 🙂

that does - thanks a lot.I have an aversion to doubling up on southampton in defence and really think the D men will contribute valuable attacking points, so am steering clear of Boruc. Mannone is an option but it is difficult to find a good rotation option (mebbe Krul but I think he is a risk).

I have decided to do the unthinkable (until I change it again) - Mignolet/4.0, sacrificing Enrique for Coleman in defence. I have drafted back in Lambert/Jarvis attacking combo but might change to Kone/? or Carrol/Schneidelin

Couldn't agree more. Not picking players because the bonus points system doesn't seem to favour them over the course of the season is ludicrous.

Bonus points will be awarded in individual games and the players who score / assist will be favoured. It is only in the tighter games, e.g. 0-0 where having a player that favours the bonus points system counts. They are games I wouldn't expect BPs from someone like Walcott anyway!

    2) who is nailed on at spurs between Dawson and Kaboul?

RvP is so difficult for me as United fan. Since I go every week, every time i think about a team without RvP I can see myself sitting there with shredded nerves every time RvP gets a chance, do i want him to score, or do i want him to miss as i don't have him and a rival does?

He got 262 last year, now had you had Berba, Benteke and Lambert all last season you would have 516 from your strikers

With RvP, Berba and Benteke you would have got 591.

So is RvP worth the extra cash got the nearly 80 extra points that owning him would have got you?

Yeah I agree. There's no way I could be a United fan... (well that's probably true in itself)

... and not have RVP. Otherwise it would throw horrible mixed emotions up every time he got in a good position.

You have to take into account what you can do with the extra cash. Lambert is £6.5m cheaper than RVP which means your midfield could be seriously upgraded ie: Nolan to Santi AND Snodgrass to Hazard for example.

Would those upgrades get you an additional 80 points? Probably, but there is also the captaincy issue to consider.

RVP is a safer bet. You'd have done well to pick Benteke, Lambert & Berbatov at the start of last season.

As a football fan, as a season ticket holder, you have to be hoping your players score goals. I cannot understand people on here who aren't sure whether they want a player from THEIR chosen team to score a goal.

It's not as simple a comparison as it's very unlikely someone would have those three strikers in the team from GW1 to GW38 - which is something much more likely with RvP. It's easy to get the big scorers in hindsight, a little harder to predict them now.

That's why, for some, RvP is worth the cash. You know he'll score.

Lambert vs RVP, there was a price difference of £7m at the start of the season.

That is the difference between owning Kacaniclic and Clyne vs Mata and Zabaleta.
      That is 78 + 89 = 167 points vs 212 + 124 = 336 points, so a 160 point difference

That is what £7m can get you. (I picked Kaca and Clyne as they were the highest scoring 4.5 and 4.0 options I could think of)

This year, that £6.5-7m difference is between the likes of Aspas, Kone, RvW, Berba, Lambert, J-Rod, will they come within 100 points of RVP?
      Some of them surely will.

Few quick questions to answer please & reason why.

Which Everton Defender - Coleman or Jagielka? No other Everton players

Williams (Swa) or Toure (Liv)? Already have Mignolet & Coutinho for Liverpool but no Swansea players.

Zabaleta or Nastasic? Surely Zab more nailed on?

Paulinho is my only Tottenham player as decided against Bale. Strengthened team in other areas & have RVP. Is there a better Tottenham midfielder to have? I don't know much about Paulinho. Lennon or Dembele?

    Thanks a lot 🙂

Coleman - he'll play midfield, as Martinez plays 3-4-3 = much higher points scoring possibilities, in terms of assists. Think assists will be vital as Martinez teams don't have a reputation for being clean sheet specialists.

Williams has a nasty start, fixture wise and I think Rogers will prefer Toure over Skrtel.

Zab is yes, probably more nailed on.

I think I'd go for Lennon, if I didn't go for Bale - Lennon seems vital to Spurs shape. It's not yet quite clear where Paulinho will play.

Too hard to overlook Bale if he is still around but I do have Paulinho too!
Dembele at 5.5 is interesting if he plays further forward

Your views please. Trying to get a decent sprinkling of players with decent fixtures.

    Hazard-Bale-Walcott-Snodgrass-4.5m
    Sturridge-Negredo-Kone

    Hazard-Bale-Coutinho-Mirallas-4.5m
    Giroud-Aguero-Anelka

    Coutinho-Bale-Walcott-Snodgrass-4.5m
    Lukaku-Aguero-Kone

I like Negredo but obviously there are doubts about Pellegrini's rotation.

    Thanks!

    Please RMT
    Mignolet (boruc)
    Luiz, Nastasic, Collins (Mbiwa, McNaughton)
    Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Diame (Ramsey)
    Sturridge, Berb, Altidore/Kone

After week 2 I'll probably ship Luiz out most likely

So all those fancying some Anelka, who are you going to rotate him with? Or are you planning a 3-4-3?

Anelka is (for the moment) in there to free up some budget... but I might just play him standard. The other budget players I have are mostly defenders who I don't doubt will be as reliable as Anelka
