With the football season still more than three weeks away (24 days and counting), community members have been filling time tweaking their teams, pouring over last season’s statistics and still pondering how on earth they are going to fit both Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale into their sides. We take a look back at some of last week’s Hot Topics and also find out the latest from our community’s leagues.

Hottest Topics

With the Bale and Van Persie discussions rumbling on, Matt decided to take a different approach to the debate. His pictoral look at the options for those considering one, or even both, really caught our eye. Meanwhile Lateriser12 has been wondering whether we can really afford to be without both, given the way they hog their respective team’s points.

Those following Triggerlips’ financial advice are unlikely to be able to afford both Van Persie or Bale. Referring to the first few weeks he suggests financial prudence, keeping money in the bank and protecting investments. This advice could be key to navigating through the choppy waters of the first few Gameweeks in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and avoiding having to wildcard early on.

The Rate My Teams (RMT) are coming in thick and fast as the season launch approaches and Super Hans was on hand with some wise words, advising us to sometimes go with our gut instinct so that we don’t all end up with the same team – his post was one of the most popular this week, garnering 22 votes. Still on the subject of RMTs, PhD student Commonsns, who is studying online communities’ collective intelligence, has used his research to create a super RMT based on all our efforts so far. Among our own daily hot topics, we’ve also been looking at the etiquette of posting and responding to a RMT, urging those who are given advice to remember to thank their good Samaritans.

A lot of the recent talk had surrounded Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas, who could potentially afford us an out of position if fielded in a front three. Toffees team mate Leighton Baines has been practically out of position for years but the arrival of Roberto Martinez and a possible change of tactics has seen the left-back somewhat overlooked. Luckily, Forca Inter was on hand to remind us that Baines costs exactly the same in the FPL game, is one of the Premier League’s most attacking players and benefits from potentially far more clean sheet points.

Another to take a more visual look at the Fantasy game was In Tommy We Trust, whose excellent analysis of the bonus point changes in the FPL game have led him to create a quite simply stunning interactive and colourful chart. We’ve been having great fun plotting the anticipated changing bonus point fortunes of players ahead of the new season.

Weston Wasters is another budding academic among us – he has kindly lifted his head from his text books to offer a slice of knowledge, this time regarding calculating player value. His ingenious musings went a long way to helping us find some potential underpriced gems and weed out those overpriced players along the way. On a similar theme Cromulent1 has been casting his critical eye over points per million as a way of calculating player value.

Finally, Absinthe, a regular during the deadzone hours of midnight to the early morning (UK time), has been taking a detailed look at defensive rotation and fixture difficulty. His mammoth piece of research was so big it had to be divided into several parts. Part one focused on two-way options, part two looked at the three way options, part three looked at the options for those looking for four defenders to rotate with two playing each week, and the final part looked at the trickiest of all the defensive options, the Uber strategy, which involves playing with an all cheap, all rotating defence.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for defenders last week. Top player in the round Pique was acquired by BonZ‘s Cardiff, whilst Berbagod‘s Sunderland staged a remarkable double swoop of Chiellini and Hummels. Even though Fulham, guided by PeppieandFelix still lead the game, Saniul‘s Everton are not far behind and Norwich led by The Shadow are turning into real contenders. It promises to be a very close contest at the top in the coming weeks. Submission of bids on midfielders and striker targets must be made by Saturday 2359 BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

Any chance of a quick RMT on this lot please? It's a punt, but I'm convinced Bale will end up leaving Spurs so I'm going to save myself the headache of trying to shoehorn him in!

    Another team.. with reasons 😀

    Mignolet / (Davis)
    Clyne / Coleman / Vertonghen / (Turner) / (Chester)
    Bale / Kagawa / Walcott / Gerrard / Silva
    Rodriguez / Berbatov / (Gayle)

I went with Vert because of the premium defenders article and the fact that with the new bonus system he will do very well.

Kagawa is someone I can't decide on, it depends on what Rooney does but I think he can do quite well.

Gerrard because Sturridge might be injured and I quite like him 🙂

JRod - Cheaper than Lambert, might play further forward and Berbatov tends to be quite consistent

    Thoughts? Ratings? Changes?

    Cheers

On the whole i like it. Good to see someone else bringing Vertonghen in following that article! As for Kagawa, Utd's fixtures aren't good for the first few weeks; maybe downgrade to say Nolan (WHU have some great fixtures!) and upgrade one or two players until the game settles and you can see who is and who isn't performing.

Very nice, good balance.Great midfield. Downgrade Mignolet and go with two playing keepers that rotate, otherwise you're giving away points if Mignolet concedes when his alternative has a CS in a handy game. 5.0 m Foster, Vorm, Stekelenburg. 4.5m Boruc, Robles, Westwood/Mannone.

Vertonghen will do very well at getting BPS but this doesn't mean he'll get BAPs. Consistency of BPS won't translate to BAPs, scoring goals will. Too many people seem to be making this mistake.

there is still question marks on how Everton may line up so I would keep an eye on preseason for Coleman

Like the shop keeper in Mr Benn.

I've been busy creating a mashup of your season ticker with my complete rotations.

I took a look at your clean sheet and attacking ratings last night, and found them more sophisticated than mine, so set about trying to shoe horn my stuff into your sheet.

I think I'm almost there, Excel is trying to delete about 10,000 rows at the moment so it needs a few mins.

So I should have better def rotations coming up, and I'll dropbox the file so you can take a look.

Then I was thinking of looking at attacking rotations to help us plan the transfers through the season.

Just before I go, if you do manage to get your rotations to work off the 'tinker with your ticker' values, the rotation value will update as the ticker updates. We would have a live rotation guide that is customisable by the configurable values within the season ticker making everybodies rotations worth, their own opinion. Liking the sound of this 🙂

In my humble opinion, the first week is always slightly in the air. Michu last year, nobody would have guessed that he was going to be one of the highest scorers, but to the end, nearly every team had him involved.

My advice for the first few weeks is to be aware of bandwagons quickly and be ready to jump on. Somebody who we don't expect will score a mass amount of points, but there was no way of knowing for definite that he was going to score those points.

Myself, I would go for the players that are going to guarantee a start, and have a reputation for those clean sheets, assists or goals. (Mertesacker-Hazard-Berbatov for players of the top of my head etc.)

I would also definitely take note of the fixtures. Chelsea have Hull first game of the season, Arsenal have Villa etc. (Work it out for yourselves.)

The first week, you want to get a guaranteed few points, and after that, you will realise who is going to be nailed on.

all in all, these are the main tips I would give. Goalscorers for Midfielders and Attackers, and defenders who play for teams who are known for clean sheets (Liverpool, Arsenal etc.)

I myself would not go for RVP, as I have chose Bale. But Berbatov I know he will start for Fulham and I know he will score goals, seen as he as he is their main output for scoring. Sturridge I know is a solid, steady player; with Suarez being injured, he will be the main centre forward. With two hat-tricks last year, he will guarantee you goals.

Hazard, Walcott, Bale and Coutinho are all goalscoring midfielders, who know their job well.

coutinho had a strong finish to the season but I don't know if you could call him a goal scoring midfielder who knows his job well just yet. what I mean to say is if you plan to keep your options open then RVP is your best bet, he will start, he will get points and you can use the investment to jump onto any player if he under performs. In your argument he is your perfect player

I can see what you're saying, it just depends on whether you want to spend that price tag. All i'm saying is that he isn't the only guaranteed point scorers. You want players who are going to do their jobs, not these risky players such as Aspas, Rodriguez, Lukaku who aren't guaranteed to be nailed on.

Not really as some people seem to be going for these risky picks, such as Jay Rodriguez.. he isn't going to be a main point scorer, unless i'm mistaken and becomes a Michu. All i'm saying is go for a known points scorer, not a risky pick for the first week anyway.

So you think picking cheap defenders who are cheap from Crystal Palace, Hull and Cardiff are a good idea? Are they guaranteed clean sheets every game? You can find other defenders from much more solid teams who will keep clean sheets for same price.

I'm just saying for the first week, you need to go for reputation, not gambles.

You can't expect to pick a decent midfield or forward line unless you've a few cheap defenders. Only 11 will play for you so pick 5 or 6 cheapish options so you can maximise points with more expensive players.

As regards Sturridge he will not be match fit for GW1. He's also not steady unless he's getting a decent supply of ball against a week defence. A suspect temperament, 4 clubs in 4 seasons, he needs to work harder and score goals against big teams on a consistent basis to become a top player.

What would expensive be to you exactly? For midfields and strikers?

Last year towards the end of the season, he was banging in goals for fun. Myself, i would class Sturridge as a safe option as I think i know what I am getting with him. With the likes of coutinho in the team, I think the greedy centre forward position for him could cause him to get a load of points.

I've not read anywhere else that he isn't match fit either?

In my team i've got 7 players I would class as a 'higher price' in their bracket. Whilst they may not be over 10 million, i know what i'm getting with them.

It's not quite true that no-one anticipated Michu's success. Two of last season's top 5 (Kelvin and Evs) both had him in their squads from GW1.

Yeah, there was plenty of talk about Michu before the season started. Perhaps we couldn't predict the extent of his success, but I'd guess lots of people around here had him week 1.

I haven't noticed anybody being talked about this season like Michu was last year, so if anything like that happened again this year it really would be out of nowhere.

Alright, lads, 1st RMT of the new season:

    Mignolet • Boruc
Coleman • Turner (Nor) • Turner (Car) • Shaw • Chester
    Bale • Hazard • Silva • Kagawa • Thomas
    Sturridge • Giroud • Lambert

I'm going RVP-less for the first few, partly because of the tricky fixtures and partly to get a good look at how Moyes is going to set the team up.

Defence is looking a bit light...

    Any thoughts?

Hi '66. I'm pretty sure one of my early drafts had that exact defence...then I got greedy 😉 The big hitting mids look good but not keen on the strikers (maybe Arsenal will sign a better option than Giroud yet, there's plenty of time). Is Sturridge injured? I heard murmurings to that effect.

      A few thoughts:

      Thomas; I'm dubious
Kagawa; a lot of a gamble for me, and with poor fixtures, not worth it
Have you considered Walcott and Lukaku over Hazard and Giroud? Lukaku is there as a one shot player (assuming that they don't sign anyone before GW1), who you can then sell on for whichever bandwagon takes your fancy in GW2.

Going to see how things pan out with city; just want to put a team of 15 together who are pretty much guaranteed to play and who know the epl.

I am a fan of having a cheapie in the front 8 to bench every week, saves the headache.
And the pain when your benched player scores!
And doing so will let you upgrade JRob to Lambert, or upgrade Bent.

Like it, covers all the bases apart from Man City.
Have a feeling Giroud will be a good buy.

it's an often discussed subject but I really think anelka is a poor option in that price bracket. check out his stats for last season, near in mind his age and also bear in mind that WBA rotated strikers last year.

I haven't been on much lately to see what other people have said about Anelka, and you may be right about him, but let me try and put the counterargument:

Clarke likes to rotate his strikers as a way of tiring out the opposition in order to allow the impact sub striker to come on and find gaps against tiring defences. This was actually relatively successful last season, where West Brom scored 28% of their goals in the last 15 minutes of their games (3rd highest in the league) and 49% of their goals in the last half hour (2nd highest in the league).

This strategy allowed Lukaku to score 17 PL goals despite often being used as the impact sub, indeed 35% of his goals were scored in the last 15 minutes of a game.

Therefore if Anelka only plays as an impact sub, it won't necessarily be detrimental to his goal scoring appeal, and quite frankly what do you expect for a 5.5 striker?

from what i've heard, Anelka is going to be nailed on. A class act, he will be absolutely brilliant as a sub striker in my opinion.

Being a proud member, I think the below would be a great functionality to have for the ticker when looking at rotation:

    - The ability to hide gameweeks, so when looking at rotation (e.g. Mignolet), you could hide all the gameweeks when you would be happy to start Mignolet, and look for a row of continuous blue to rotate him with.
Would be good for people like me that need simple things like colours to sort out my team!

It's a decent idea but just use a rotation finder on top of the season ticker

Not sure what you mean by a rotation finder? but yes I'm definitely not saying it is essential, will just make the ticker more palatable when looking at rotation.

You know you can drag the teams around? Just drag two teams next to each other and match so at least one has a bluey.. 🙂

You can move as many as you like, so you can have say, the five teams you are considering for a def rotation all together and get a nice picture of blue/red

Ah I get you...reduce the ticker to those Gameweeks where Mignolet is weak and then sort by difficulty on those to find a replacement. Nice idea.

Yes that is exactly what I mean, think being able to hide GW's (or even teams as well) would be a great functionality to have to analyse the fixtures.

Keep up the good work by the way, am a fan of the hot topics, and these community posts which round them up are a welcome addition.

I just wanted to say thanks to the Scouts for putting up these Community Round-up articles. The forums can be devilishly hard to navigate especially if you're looking for a post in the deadzone or when you weren't around. This hits on a lot of the big topics and contains a lot of gems and smart advice. For a new FFS user, this stuff is incredibly useful, and it's great that the site is making use of not only the scout articles, but the contributions of us the members and our kooky theories.
