The Community Round Up

With the football season still more than three weeks away (24 days and counting), community members have been filling time tweaking their teams, pouring over last season’s statistics and still pondering how on earth they are going to fit both Robin Van Persie and Gareth Bale into their sides. We take a look back at some of last week’s Hot Topics and also find out the latest from our community’s leagues.

Hottest Topics

With the Bale and Van Persie discussions rumbling on, Matt decided to take a different approach to the debate. His pictoral look at the options for those considering one, or even both, really caught our eye. Meanwhile Lateriser12 has been wondering whether we can really afford to be without both, given the way they hog their respective team’s points.

Those following Triggerlips’ financial advice are unlikely to be able to afford both Van Persie or Bale. Referring to the first few weeks he suggests financial prudence, keeping money in the bank and protecting investments. This advice could be key to navigating through the choppy waters of the first few Gameweeks in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game and avoiding having to wildcard early on.

The Rate My Teams (RMT) are coming in thick and fast as the season launch approaches and Super Hans was on hand with some wise words, advising us to sometimes go with our gut instinct so that we don’t all end up with the same team – his post was one of the most popular this week, garnering 22 votes. Still on the subject of RMTs, PhD student Commonsns, who is studying online communities’ collective intelligence, has used his research to create a super RMT based on all our efforts so far. Among our own daily hot topics, we’ve also been looking at the etiquette of posting and responding to a RMT, urging those who are given advice to remember to thank their good Samaritans.

A lot of the recent talk had surrounded Everton midfielder Kevin Mirallas, who could potentially afford us an out of position if fielded in a front three. Toffees team mate Leighton Baines has been practically out of position for years but the arrival of Roberto Martinez and a possible change of tactics has seen the left-back somewhat overlooked. Luckily, Forca Inter was on hand to remind us that Baines costs exactly the same in the FPL game, is one of the Premier League’s most attacking players and benefits from potentially far more clean sheet points.

Another to take a more visual look at the Fantasy game was In Tommy We Trust, whose excellent analysis of the bonus point changes in the FPL game have led him to create a quite simply stunning interactive and colourful chart. We’ve been having great fun plotting the anticipated changing bonus point fortunes of players ahead of the new season.

Weston Wasters is another budding academic among us – he has kindly lifted his head from his text books to offer a slice of knowledge, this time regarding calculating player value. His ingenious musings went a long way to helping us find some potential underpriced gems and weed out those overpriced players along the way. On a similar theme Cromulent1 has been casting his critical eye over points per million as a way of calculating player value.

Finally, Absinthe, a regular during the deadzone hours of midnight to the early morning (UK time), has been taking a detailed look at defensive rotation and fixture difficulty. His mammoth piece of research was so big it had to be divided into several parts. Part one focused on two-way options, part two looked at the three way options, part three looked at the options for those looking for four defenders to rotate with two playing each week, and the final part looked at the trickiest of all the defensive options, the Uber strategy, which involves playing with an all cheap, all rotating defence.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for defenders last week. Top player in the round Pique was acquired by BonZ‘s Cardiff, whilst Berbagod‘s Sunderland staged a remarkable double swoop of Chiellini and Hummels. Even though Fulham, guided by PeppieandFelix still lead the game, Saniul‘s Everton are not far behind and Norwich led by The Shadow are turning into real contenders. It promises to be a very close contest at the top in the coming weeks. Submission of bids on midfielders and striker targets must be made by Saturday 2359 BST. Anyone interested can still sign up here.

  1. Assessing the promoted teams
    It’s A Joke

Of the promoted teams, who do you think will do well? I'm not sure, but my thinking is currently thus (please correct me):

Holloway likes to play in a hung-ho fashion. I can see Palace perhaps scoring a few ala Blackpool a couple of years ago. Gayle could be a good punt because of this. 6mil for a striker (what they paid, 5 mil in FPL) is a fair bit for Palace, so there must be something about him. Parr is also a good shout. Sometimes plays on the left wing. However, due to this I reckon they'll concede more than the other 2 (Hull & Cardiff) and thus may stink like a stone...

Bruce is a bit dull in my opinion. However, his teams can be quite sturdy at the back. Chester hence looks a solid pick. I'm surprised Hobbs isn't given more game time. He had a bad injury last year but he's a great defender, strong in the tackle, good in the air. Him and Chester could form a great partnership but it doesn't look likely to happen. Graham could be great up top but who is gonna supply him? Quinn can be a bit of a terrier but Hull's supply looks weak to me, which is why I think Graham will fall flat.

Cardiff have the most talented manager of the 3. His defense is sturdy and there are some creative players in his side (Kim, Bellamy, Cowie, Mutch, Whittingham). I think they'll do better than the other 2. Probably sturdier at the back (though i can't see why Marshall beats Lewis in goal) and with more going forward. Cornelius could be a diamond.

In a nutshell, I'd get Cardiff players in over the other 2, followed by Palace attacking assists. Probably stay clear of Hull.

Steve Bruce knows how to grind out draws. Hull are very good defensively, and that will help them in the PL. They are really organized under Bruce, so I think they'll lose the fewest games out of the 3

Might need to wait a bit before backing Gayle. Palace are on the hunt for another striker and if they get one I suspect they'll look to play 4-5-1 to try to keep things tight. This could limit Gayle's game time. Parr is not nailed on at left back either. I was talking to an Eagles fan today and he said Moxey was the regular left back until he got injured, then Parr got it. Now Parr is recovering from injury and Moxey has the place back. Both good players, both able to chip in with the (very) odd goal. He recommends Ward at RB.

If I was going to buy from these three, just for now, they'd be for the bench. But a half decent keeper from any of them should get some save bonuses (moreso than the big teams).

Andrew Taylor played most games from a defender point of view (43) but Marshall looks good between the sticks after playing all 46... 18 clean sheets in there = save points => might be a good second keeper option... but bear in mind that that's the championship & the prem should be a step up. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for this, I'm still a little sketchy on the promoted sides, not really sure what to expect from them. I'm glad you've picked out two players I particularly like in Cornelius and Quinn - though I agree that Hull's blunt-looking attack could hold him back. Looking forward to being able to scout these teams properly when the season kicks off!

Cardiff a top club in the Championship last few years.

We've seen what their rivals have been able to do in the top flight.

The trip to Wales likely to be a tough roadtrip. Can see them doing OK. B Turner and Whittingham interest me

He says he will manage his fitness and assess the competitions he plays him in like he did with Makelele in his first term at Chelsea. Makelele played 36 games in epl in JM first season at Chelsea. He also says he won't ask him to do a Makelele role as he did not want to curb his "attacking instincts".

Personally I think he could still be a very good option at least until after xmas when meaningful games come thick and fast and JM might consider resting him for some in order to keep him fresh for others.

"In this moment we have just to analyse competition and make some choices, because I believe he is the same player, with the difference that he is 35 and the time [needed] to recover from match to match is not the same for a man of 35 to a man of 25. That's the only point. Now we have to analyse the fixtures, analyse the matches, analyse the week we have and to make a few choices."

"Frank can't play 60 matches like he did before, but the quality of the player and what he represents for the way I like to play football is exactly the same," said Mourinho. all his comments are saying lampard won't play every match, and at the end he mentions Makelele. I think he meant he will still play an important role despite his age (he was almost let out of the club). lampard doesn't have makelele's physic and. Anyway that's just my interpretation

Wow. You are certainly brave, who knows though, the fantasy gods work in strange ways. If sot hit 10 clean sheets that's a potential 120 points from 9 mill though, not great returns

Ha! click my link. there is a thin line between bravery and pig headed and I prefer the road with the trough hahaha.

True about the clean sheets but you may be forgetting that the 2 main defensive choices from sot (Clyne, fonte) come with real attacking returns. Add into the mix a realistic 4 assists, a goal each and some BPS and you have potential value there. not to mention that these will be sold on after the initial great run of fixtures

This is true, there are attacking returns to be had there and Clyme was a mainstay for me last season.

When I saw how far behind I was by January I played about a bit with the formula. I had one week of 20 points deduction among many others hahaha.

This year is all about learning from last years experiments and putting into practice a winning plan 😀

In the off chance that BOTH Rooney transfers & CHE get a DGW...
I've already got a Rooney, Mata, Hazard, & Luiz team laid out.

Before you ask, I've also resigned myself to taking the 8pt hit on 3 transfers to get my squad back to to what I'd like it to be.

    Hi all,

Very very rarely post, but haven't seen this asked as yet

Is anyone looking to load up on 3 chelsea players and Rooney?

With the idea of having 4 Chelsea players (Only under the big ifs that we get double first game week and Rooney moves to the blues)

p.s thanks to everyone for the info I've managed to gather on this site, love how committed people are to a game that mainly wins you kudos

i thought the DGW was super-unlikely at this point. the rooney thing would require unlikely timing, but if he was definitely gonna play but still on the site as a utd player, i'd definitely get him alongside another 3. starting with torres hazard and ivanovic last season got me into the top 50 after gw1.

There was a scurry of excitement when the rumours first surfaced, but it's died down now we haven't seen the story develop. If an early CHE DGW is confirmed, and Rooney signs for Chelsea, we'd be daft not to quadruple up IMO; but is either actually going to happen?

I'm relatively happy with the rest and actually quite like the risk of taking a hit to bring someone in

        Current Team:

        Boruc (Speroni)
        Mert, Kaboul, Cole (Clyne, Parr)
        Hazard, Bale, Wilshire, Lampard (Thomas)
        J.Rod, Giroud, Rooney

After week 1 I remove Cole(for Coleman) and Lampard(for Coutinho)

only one I keep changing is Wilshire but never sure who to put in

Yeah I'm the same with wilshere, is wilshire going to do anything this year? I honestly cant see value there but im not good at this game so its quite realistic that im missing something (maybe the new bonus system?)

I'm thinking wilshere could be swapped for snodgrass for the first 3 weeks. (I know a lot of people will disagree but I've also been looking at Bellamy as a cheap mid to fill the team. Got good vibes from him)

what's up with this thomas guy BTW. I keep seeing him in peoples teams?

Thomas = Cheap as chips and nailed on (apparently), don't really plan on playing him at any point tbh

If Arsenal buy a solid DM like Gustavo(Bayern) I think Wilshire may be a decent punt, he started to venture forward more at the tale end of the season and done quite well

could easily become the new Modric though and give the pass before the assist, hence the concern

Would Rooney be a SILLY choice for GW1 onwards if he somehow ended up staying at United for the start of the season? Of course he'd be a punt, but is he worse than a punt, an untouchable? As long as he gets game time, he should be a part of the goals. Since United are so set on trying to keep him, they'll surely play him right?

I'm hearing this lots and I understand that it's happened before, a la Papiss but I still feel he will get a fair few points this season. 9 mill is expensive but it's the same as Sturridge and frees up a striker spot where there are a few good options between 6.5-8 mill.

Dzeko is class but always seems o start a few steps back in the race for a starting role. don't get why. Spurs or Arsenal should really consider him. He'd score 20 plus goals for sure

would be a really good premier league player at pretty much any other team

Lies, damn lies... and keeper info...

Great post from Dino on previous page made me interested in keeper stats, and how Foster compares to others. I took the keepers who scored more than foster last year & projected what they would have scored if they had all played 36 games. Then I calculated their 'value' by dividing 'projected value' by 'cost for 2013 / 2014' - the equivalent of 'points per million' (PPM). I also included Boruc, who played < 20 games, but wanted to see how he compares....

GK Pts Mins 2012/2013 Projected pts 36 games Cost 13/14 Value (PPM)
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Hart 158 3420 158 6.5 24.3
    Begovic 144 3420 144 5.5 26.18
    Jaask 144 3420 144 5.5 26.18
    Cech 144 3195 154 6.5 22.15
    Mignolet 140 3420 140 5.5 25.5
    Schwartz 135 3240 142 5.0 27.0
    Reina 125 2790 153 5.5 27.8
    Howard 117 3240 123 5.5 22.4
    De Gea 114 2520 155 6.0 25.8
    Guzan 106 3240 112 5.0 22.4
    Foster 105 2700 133 5.0 26.6
    Boruc 63 1755 123 4.5 27.3

What does it prove? Maybe not much... some keepers have moved clubs for example (for better, for worse in some cases). The trail off in west brom's form last season is tough to explain but on average, Boruc and Foster rotate well, and both keep clean sheets in approx 25% of matches.

Boruc comes 2nd, and Foster 4th in the "Value" table above (haven't time to include every keeper here). However, both seem to represent good value for 9.5 IF west brom can find some consistency.

That is a great question - a mistake on my part. Meant to go 38... it's late. That means my "Value stats" for Beg, Jaask and Mig should be slightly lower as the numbers above are for the full 38 games.

Sorry for the goof up. Good spot.

Look above! Boruk and foster both come up in my reckonings for good first pick goalies. I'm really happy to see some data as I think my biggest pain has being picking the 2 starting goal keepers

      I'm currently choosing between

      Mignolet - Boruk
      Mignolet - Speroni
      Boruk - Szczesny

      Cheers for the data 😀

    Players to avoid early season

    1/ Rooney
    2/Bale
    3/Suarez
    4/ Sir Percy

Reasons/ The first three don't want to play football for there clubs anymore. They are either too conceited or too fookin mentally unstable to give fook anymore.

The forth has a niggling injury and is over-rated in a club that is in transition and overpriced.

I'll give you Suarez - but as he's banned for 6 games, you'd need to be a stoned beagle to select him.

But if all four stay in the PL, they'll be among the top scorers. Again. And you know it.

No sir. I think there are many reasons to give them a wide berth early season as subtly outlined above. But more poignantly to your point; being a maverick can gain you a big head start early season against 90% of the donuts playing this game.

Be a maverick with your 4.5 fifth mid ... not with the only reliable captain's choices out there.

As for the conceited (CR7, Suarez, Rooney, RVP, etc.) and "unstable (???) comments ... I can't begin to address them.

      Coutinho > Sturridge: -

Sturridge (possibly injured, injury prone, 2 new strikers to rotate with)
Coutinho (in great form, not likely to get rotated)

      Walcott > Giroud -

Giroud (In form, another striker could be bought before season (be wary, could be subject to droughts))
Walcott (in form, not as much competition)

Van wolf --- Bony (I don't know enough to comment)

      I would choose (B)

It's nice but 343 is surely the way to go. The debate on 352 vs 343 rages on here every summer and there's always only one winner.
In simple terms ; 343 allows greater early flexibility with regards to bandwagon-hopping.

It's my preferred formation. As above really, greater flexibility along with good striker options this season.

yeah it makes sense really doesn't it. If i keep with a 3-4-3 then i want to upgrade Gayle, but dont know how to do it without impacting on my defence of losing walcott, decisions! haha.

^This, or at least try to rotate someone with Thomas rather than 352 every week.

why all the negativity about david luiz? from mourinho's comments he seems nailed on in a defensive set up team? seems bazaar that he isnt in more teams

No definite DGW yet ... Utd week 2 ... no game GW3. Think that explains a lot.

one thing i learned last year was that defensive transfers are a nightmare with the constant need to alter your midfield and attack. One thing is for certain, Chelsea will be tight at the back and you will want a defender from them sooner rather than later

Personally, I'm going a City def until the schedule clears a bit for Chels - then slide over.

          No nightmares.

      Hull (h), Manu (a), blank, Everton (a)

That's a likely 6 points for 4 GWs. I agree he's a great option for the season afterJMs comment but best avoided til September

Absolutely correct. The golden boys in M's armory will be Cole and Luiz.

Posted this before but no answer. Looking to finish up my draft until closer to the season.

    A: Walcott/Sturridge
    B: Coutinho/Giroud + 1m

No other Arsenal or Liverpool players. May use extra 1m on defense/GK as I'm at 9.0/22.5. Or could use it for Mannone -> Foster and Nolan -> Mirallas. Currently have Boruc as other GK.

    Thanks

I just think it's too early for anyone to give you quality guidance on these questions.

I saw this earlier but did not reply b/c I don't know. If Arsenal add a striker or Sturridge shakes of his injury for week 1 then A. I'm also not convinced Foster is an upgrade if Mannone becomes the starter.

Gotcha. I'll wait it out in that case. Thanks for the replies. May post an RMT in a few minutes just to get some thoughts on the full team. Think I have to be banned on FPL until mid-August because I just can't stop tinkering when it's pretty pointless at where I'm at.

Pellegrini on his forwards.. 'City have the best strike-force in the league'

Doesn't really give much away wrt to fpl though. Seems keen on Dzeko so perhaps he wont be sold after all.
