Following on from yesterday’s preview movie, which highlighted the Projections and Rate My Team’s Player List feature at work, we now cast an eye over the Build My Team component.

Once again, I got together with Rate My Team’s creator, Chris Atkinson, to demonstrate and talk you through how this feature works in practice. The movie highlights how you can piece together a pre-season lineup and how, once the season is underway, Rate My Team can help not only with transfer strategies but also with selection dilemmas such as the captaincy and bench order.

In the third part of the Rate My Team movie previews we’ll be talking at length on how the tool works behind the scenes, including a full run through of the steps we take to keep it maintained and providing numbers that can help with your lineups.

Just a note for those looking to add their team id’s in order to retrieve their lineups in Rate My Team – as the movie explains, this feature is not available until squads are locked down for Gameweek 1 and made public. Otherwise, of course, we’d all be able to view each other’s teams right now by just adding ID’s into the tool. Rest assured, once Gameweek 1’s deadlines has passed, you will be able to add and save your team ID to transfer your current lineup into the tool for tinkering.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and bench order, and allow you to model your future transfers. You’ll see this at play in the movie above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Post at the top of page 2 has a fair number of replies regarding the difficulty in getting RvP in if he gets off to a blinder and his price goes up to 14.6.

Is that not he same for anyone?

What if I get Aguero and he scores a hattrick in the first gameweek and a brace in the secind and by gameweek 3 he goes up in price to 11.6, meanwhile RvP gets jack and people dump him in drives and he drops 0.6.

No difference other than perhaps a few transfers needed to get RvP in.

That's the evaluation people who go without RvP are making - that he won't set the world on fire for 14 million.

Indeed...One clever poster had a plan of keeping back a whopping three million (by picking Aguero instead) and for as long as it took for RVP to notch his first goal...and then immediately do Aguero>RVP when he did notch and before his price rose....If he get's lucky and RVP blanks for a week or two (unlikely) he could get RVP for a fair chunk less...and if not then he get's him anyway after Aguero's better opening fixture/when RVP scores.....Now that's a plan !!!

The thing is, RVP is so expensive as it is, that it'll mean completely reshaping your team to fit him in. And unless you wildcard, I don't think many people will do that.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but transfers in on wildcards don't affect price rises. (I've read that before but it could be untrue)

It is NOT the same for ANY player.

      Using YOUR Hypothesis:
GW 3 And YOU/I own RVP, whom at this point gets an injury.

SELL RvP for 13.4 - BUY Aguero for 11.6

As a result, ONE free transfer, AND 1.8 in the bank.

      Reverse YOUR Hypothesis:
What if I get RvP and he scores a hattrick in the first gameweek and a brace in the second and by gameweek 3 he goes up in price to 14.6, meanwhile Aguero gets jack and people dump him in drives and he drops 0.6.

GW 3 And YOU/I own Aguero, whom at this point gets an injury.

SELL Aguero for 10.4 - BUY RvP for 14.6

As a result, I need 4.2 MILLION, and HOW MANY? transfers to buy RvP.

In summary, If we start with RvP, and he then flops, we can down grade to ANY player easily.

If we start with ANY alternative, and he flops, whilst RvP is flying, We are DOOMED.

With a lack of certainty of which strikers are going to start the season at the pricier end of the scale, how many would consider starting the season the season with more than 3 defenders, i.e. 4-5-1, 4-4-2 or god forbid 5-4-1. might sound daft but there does seem a bit more assurance in the back 4 of most of teams , even Chel & Citeh have their nailed on starters!
It could allow a back 5 with Chel, Ars, Citeh, Liv & Ever coverage (double Chel maybe)
    Just a thought!

Am I right in thinking Michael Dawson is nailed on?

He is the captain of Spurs.
He was Spurs' rock at the back last season.
If Kaboul came into the XI Vert may move to the left.
Kaboul and Vert both like making forward runs, if they played together Spurs would be exposed.

Agree/disagree? Whilst he has the armband he must surely be a safe pick.

Rose at LB for me then. Wouldn't break the Dawson/Vert partnership at CB, but Kaboul will be eased in at CB to partner Vert.

Dawson should be good to own at the start. I had him almost whole of last season and he was the cheapest source to 2 points from a top 6 defender

Benteke, Lukaku, Aspas is my current front 3, with Benteke, Lukaku and Luiz all shipped out by gameweek 3.

Bench Hazard for GW3, by my reckoning, that only requires one hit

Pozuelo is coming into a midfield with a lot of competition.

He is an attacking mid, so surely Michu will be first choice in that position, with Bony as a lone striker.

In a 4-2-3-1, with Bony as the striker, and Michu occasionally playing there, and wide roles covered by Hernandez, Dyer, Routledge and Aguestien. I guess Pozuelo could also play wide.

The double pivot will be 2 of Shelvey, Britton, Ki, De Guzman and Canas

The attacking 3 will be 3 of Michu, Dyer, Hernandez, Routledge, Shelvey and Pozuelo

      Striker: Bony or Michu

      A lot of competition there

Do you guys don't have him because of the one Mourinho quote (possibly not playing the first game because of international duty..) or is there more to it?

    Cheers in advance..

Nearly everyone had Hazard over Mata anyway. The general expectation is that Hazard is in for a big year now he's gotten used to the league and is more of a goalscorer than Mata who likes to assist a lot. Hazard is also ahead of Mata in the pecking order for penalties and is 1m cheaper.

I like my team which means there's got to be something wrong with it. Over here in the States, we play by FPL rules, but some guys are priced differently and are in different positions than you guys have:

    Jussi (Boruc)

    Ivan/Clyne/Rat (DeBuchy, Tamas)

    Michu/Santi/Coutinho/Kagawa (El Ahmadi)

    Lukaku/Benteke/Hazard

    Thoughts?

Tamas won't be getting any gametime.

Needs more Bale. Could you perhaps do Kags and Michu to Mirallas and Bale? Difficult without seeing the prices you're working with...

I'm okay with Tamas not seeing much playing time. I'm sure I'll have him out by week three. Mirallas is considered a Forward here and Bale actually costs more than Kags and Michu combined

Last year you had a scheme for value of players at the start of the season in def, mid and attack. It served me well last year but I lost my notation.

It looked something like this :
    4.5 4.5
    6.5 6.0 5.0 4.5 4.0
    9.5 8.5 6.5 5.0 5.0
    10.0 9.0 7.5

    The Tottenham Defence

Last season Spurs conceded the fewest shots from outside the box.
They also conceded the fewest shots in the box, with the exceptions of City and Liverpool.

This is why I believe that their CS count will increase next year. I think Paulinho will only strengthen their defence as his box-to-box style will aid the defence directly and help keep possession up the pitch, easing the pressure further.

That's my two pennies worth anyway...

                Ivanovic - Dawson - Collins - Alcaraz - Clyne
                Walcott - Hazard (c) - Coutinho - Jarvis - Koren
Lukaku (vc) - Aguero - Anelka

                +2.5 for Lukaku->Rooney

Puncheon is far from nailed-on; you're better looking at Schneiderlin, Pilkington, Dembele, etc in that price bracket.
I also wouldn't trust Newcastle's defence, with the exception of Santon they lack both quality and goal threat.

      Otherwise very nice indeed.
