Following on from yesterday’s preview movie, which highlighted the Projections and Rate My Team’s Player List feature at work, we now cast an eye over the Build My Team component.

Once again, I got together with Rate My Team’s creator, Chris Atkinson, to demonstrate and talk you through how this feature works in practice. The movie highlights how you can piece together a pre-season lineup and how, once the season is underway, Rate My Team can help not only with transfer strategies but also with selection dilemmas such as the captaincy and bench order.

In the third part of the Rate My Team movie previews we’ll be talking at length on how the tool works behind the scenes, including a full run through of the steps we take to keep it maintained and providing numbers that can help with your lineups.

Just a note for those looking to add their team id’s in order to retrieve their lineups in Rate My Team – as the movie explains, this feature is not available until squads are locked down for Gameweek 1 and made public. Otherwise, of course, we’d all be able to view each other’s teams right now by just adding ID’s into the tool. Rest assured, once Gameweek 1’s deadlines has passed, you will be able to add and save your team ID to transfer your current lineup into the tool for tinkering.

Fantasy Football Scout Memberships are now available for the pre-season price of £12.50.

What is Rate My Team?
Rate My team is a statistical model built specifically to assess every player in the Premier League and return their expected values for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in a given Gameweek. The system is a complex and thorough one which, of course, plots the probabilities of a player’s time on the pitch, their expected number of goals, assists, bonus points, yellow and red cards, clean sheets, own goals, goals conceded and saves. The strength of the opponent they are facing in a given Gameweek is also crucial; so every team has an attacking and defensive rating, every player a probability of playing a given match with injuries, suspensions and international absence factored in.

How Can It Help Me?
If you’re a member you can use the Rate My Team tool in a number of ways. Firstly, you can use it as a projections tool to predict what specific players will score, on average, over the next X number of Gameweeks. As you would have seen in our first movie, you have a players table that can be filtered by position or FPL cost and which can be extended to show any number of Gameweeks. You can also sort on “Value” to find those players projected to offer the best points per million return.

However, this is just one part of the functionality. Rate My Team can also analyse your existing FPL lineup, recommend captains, vice captains, your bench and bench order, and allow you to model your future transfers. You’ll see this at play in the movie above.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Until we see who Pardew plays, my guess is both will play some games alongside Colo...

With reference to the discussion above on Nasty. Out of curiosity why do people think he is nailed on?

He only started 21 games last year. I am not saying he is not, just wondering why everyone assumes he is, particularly with a new manager there?

Lescott is the past, Nastasic is the future. Lescott lost basically half his starts last year to Nastasic...so the thinking is that this year will continue the progression. In the end, it is guesswork as to who will start GW1, but odds are that Nastasic will be favored because he will be City's defensive anchor in 3 years time, not Lescott.

Plus, at times Lescott looked bewildered at the back last season, and Nastasic looked like a seasoned veteran at 19 years old. Why invest starts into an aging Lescott and not a bright young prospect like Nastasic?

couldn't disagree more... I know for a "fact" that Levy has been informed by Joe Lewis that he wants to challenge for the league. You do not sell your best player when the owner wants this.

People seem to think spurs need the money... we don't... I do however agree that if another high bid comes in then levy being the shrewd business man he is may tell Lewis he should accept.

I think OS is kinda right here. You don't sell your best player. Look at Arsenal, they have been selling their best players for quite some time now, and buying cheaper but decent players, they're exactly where they were, with the fans certainly not happy. I'd prefer having the best player in my team + 1 decent new player rather than letting my best player go and getting 3-4 decent players.

Hard to say, really. He may not be Pellegrini's cup of tea, so to speak.

For all we know Dzeko and Negredo may be the strikers he feels work best together under the systems he likes to play.

Aguero could end up fighting for scraps of gametime too.

At least with RVP you know starts and gametime are assured.

You have to make your own mind up on it.

Dzeko has made a big statement in preseason and he has a fresh slate now to impress the manager.

Aguero is the big name on FPL but, last season he was a massive letdown and that was with Tevez and Balotelli for competition. Pellegrini has bought in new strikers for a reason.

In all honesty, if I was going to gamble on a City forward right now it would be Dzeko. Even if he doesn't start he usually comes on and scores.

There is no way right now that I'm picking Aguero over RVP though. I know RVP will start and is capable of scoring or assisting in any fixture. I'm not so sure Aguero will even start.

Yep, I'd agree. Doubt he signed him, just to bench him. First choice will probably be him and Aguero. Think Dezko being given game time preseason is either to put him in the shop window to sell him or to give him false hope of playing so he doesn't agitate to leave.

Probably very similar to many team here on the blog but not too sure about the fwd can anyone give me alternatives....
    This is my line up:

    Mannone (Boruc)
    Luiz coleman Collins (Chester,Turner)
    Hazard Silva walcott coutinho (Thomas)
    RVP JRod Anelka

I am not too sure about anelka and JRod espically seems that anelka is a rotation risk and JRod is in a promoted side so can't hope for alot of points from him although he did score goals and took penalties in the preseason...

If you want to upgrade your strikers then I would downgrade Coutinho.

      Or Luiz.

Sacrilege and heresy to say that, I know, but all it takes is a Villa goal and basically you are getting 8 points from your Chelsea defender unless he scores or assists. Maybe Lukaku might be a better option than Luiz?

However, that said I think your strikers are fine. JRod, imo, will outscore Lambert this season and Anelka has great early fixtures and pre season form. If anything, I reckon the start of the season will be the optimum time to have Anelka as I suspect he will fade by the winter.

I'm gambling on Anelka too. It's a risk obviously but could be a nice reward if it comes off.

Having both Anelka & JRod might be a bit too weak though. JRod is actually my plan B if Anelka fails.

Downgrade Cout & upgrade JRod maybe? Lukaku for DGW1 punt then transfer out?

This is the problem we all face with RVP. I personally wouldn't have 4 heavies in midfield. Lose one to bolster the attack. Benteks really has to be in given the dgw.

Yeah, it's really good to see Young Seamus back in the fold. I haven't really considered him tbh.

I really like the STH defence and am thinking of having at least Borat and one defender (prob. Shaw given his threat). Collins looks good value from Wham; someone will probably emerge from one of the promoted sides (Cardiff seems the most likely) so possible Bradford might be a shout.

      6/10

      -needs a CHS defender
      - Aguero has too many question marks at present and I would be reluctant to go to him until we know the new manager's rotation policy
      - Benteks needs to be there for the dgw ideally for JRod
      - on paper, your team has the right sort of balance; just not sure about the personel.

    Good morning everyone.

Finding it very difficult to pick that first/last striker spot.
Lukaku and J.Rod are there pretty much to stay (for now).

    But that one spot..

Benteke - would definetely like to have him, but that blank is a real pain.
Benteke, Lukaku & J.Rod. => Looks like a potential wc gw3 to me!

Sturridge - injured and not very confident with him and his continuous doubtfullness from last season.

Aguero - if I only knew he will start and play 90 mins..

Rvp - gw4 at earliest for that price.

I suppose I could go Benteke, Lukaku and J.Rod, save gw2 transfer and then maybe do 3 transfers in gw3 to sort things.
But in history of fantasy football, has someone ever actually managed to save gw2 transfer??

You have to have Benteks for the dgw - that's a no brainer imo. Last year's winner identified the opening dgw as a chance to get ahead and put some points on the board. I feel you need to adopt the same attitude.

I agree that the three fwd spots are a tricky affair at present. I think once we get nearer the opening weekend, we'll have a much clearer idea of our players.

The problem with Benteke is that there is a good chance he will score 4 points GW1, given he is away to Chelsea and Arsenal. You will then need to spend 4 points to rid yourself of Tekkers before the blank, so you have scored 0. Any other striker who plays GW1 will score at least 2, barring red cards or penalty misses.

          "Good chance?"

When you look at his record, you are taking a very big gamble in leaving him out imo.

          Besides, you'll probably be w/cing in first 3 weeks so it's a win:win situation.

Did you see that post about fixture proof players? Benteke was rated as a flat track bully - scored most of his goals against weak opposition at home. I can see Chelsea and Arsenal dominating the games and he gets 1 chance at most.

As long as you don't have 6 DGW players and a strong enough team to have three blanks on the bench for GW3 you won't need to take a points hit, although I think Villa are best avoided for those first three weeks.

Although they should be taken with a pinch of salt his projected score for GW1 is 6.3. Subtract 4 from it for the cost to ditch him for GW3 to get 2.3 and they'll be a dozen forwards who would score more on average.

A lot depends on Agueros performances in the remaining friendly games. If he bags a few goals and looks sharp then he should be first in line. He is arguably the most talented forward there and is already settled in the Prem and established at City.

Then Aguero > RVP for GW4 is achievable.

Also Lukaku > Studge is a nice option after DGW

Yep, at the start my fwd line was Aguero, Sturridge, J.Rod and planned Agu => Rvp gw4.
Then came double and Sturridge changed to Lukaku.

Like you say, remaining friendlies will give us more info about Aguero.
Who knows, might end up for Aguero, Benteke, Lukaku and downgrade my midfield & defence.

          - Aspas? Never heard of him.

Benteks/Studge/RVP would be ideal if you could fit them in.

Utterly amazing. It's been a summer's day here in Godsown. 🙂

that could go wrong 🙂 .. i have cech at the back at the moment who will become Mignolet in a GW 2 so dont really want toure. i understand the attraction though

Don't have any Chelsea defensive cover, might live to regret it, but I'm happy with my front 8. Gotta risk it for the biscuit 😉

You are missing a CHS defender to take advantage of the dgw.

This sounds like a good plan, especially if they concede in both games 😉

v Hull? I can see someone getting medieval in that game.

Oh don't get me wrong, I'm sure Chelsea will smash goals past both Hull and Villa, but I can see them conceding too.

Mourinho is tight at the back though. Not seeing too many goals conceded, imo.

Cech 🙂 .. downgrade to Mignolet week 2.. waste of a transfer on a goalie i know but would have to do it with my 3rd chelsea player no matter which position either way

    Repost.

Hey guys, what do you think about this team for GW1? (It is the best I can come up with assuming Bale leaves)

    Mignolet (Given)

    Collins--IVANOVIC--Shaw (M.Turner, Parr)

    Walcott--Snodgrass--Mirallas--HAZARD (Thomas)

    Rvp--BENTEKE--Rodriguez

Decent balance, start Turner instead of Shaw. Interesting that you have chosen RVP and not Bale, could be a good risk 😉

      Good team 🙂

Apart from omitting Bale and the inclusion of Mirallas, that's quite a handy team.

      7/10.
