Scout Report – Roberto Soldado

While the media spotlight continues to shine firmly on a certain Welshman, Andre Villas-Boas has added to the Tottenham ranks with the acquisition of Roberto Soldado from Spanish outfit Valencia. Having passed a medical, the 28-year-old arrives at White Hart Lane for a club-record fee of around £26m and is the third player to sign up this summer, following Paulinho and Nacer Chadli to the club.

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Soldado – in a similar situation to Chelsea’s Juan Mata – was rarely given a chance to establish himself as a regular at the Bernabeu. His career began back in 2002, where over the period of four seasons playing for Madrid’s “B” team Castilla, he notched 64 goals in 120 league matches. Farmed out on loan to Osasuna in 2006, Soldado produced 11 goals in 30 appearances but returned to his parent club once again the following year and, by the time he left for Getafe in 2008/09 for a mere €4m, had been handed a mere 16 first-team appearances by Madrid, finding the net on a couple of occasions.

With regular game time under his belt, Soldado quickly set about becoming one of the most lethal marksmen in the Spanish top-flight. Over two seasons at Getafe, he notched 29 goals and four assists in 60 matches, despite 11 of those appearances arriving from the bench – his exploits caught the eye of Valencia, with the club snapping him up as a €10m replacement for David Villa.

Soldado’s three-year tenure at the Mestalla was a hugely successful period as he demonstrated a consistency of scoring which is sure to make him a Fantasy favourite. His first term, back in 2010/11, harvested 18 goals and three assists from 34 matches, while the following year saw him produce 17 goals and three assists in 32 appearances. His final season in La Liga turned out to be Soldado’s most prolific, though, with 24 strikes and four assists from 35 league games highlighting his attacking potential. From a disciplinary point of view, he did have a penchant for picking up yellow cards, however, earning 49 cautions over the previous five domestic campaigns.

On the international stage, Soldado has represented his country at every youth level from Under 15 to Under 21, scoring 25 times in 41 appearances, and has also turned out for the senior side on 11 occasions, with six goals to his name.

The Prospects

A classic style centre-forward, the five foot eleven Soldado is adept with both feet, strong in the air and possesses a mobility and intelligence of movement which is always able to buy him a yard or two breathing space against the most diligent of man-markers. Being a penalty-box-predator-type, he rarely drops deep, though, and has a tendency to play on the shoulder of the final defender, utilising a decent turn of pace to gain an advantage.

If he brings his La Liga form to the table, the Spaniard’s arrival at White Hart Lane looks set to give Fantasy managers a bona fide frontline option in the season ahead, with the chances of spot-kick duties also looking likely. Villas-Boas’ preferred lone striker system – whether it be a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 this time out – will surely see Soldado as the main man up front for the north London outfit, with Emmanuel Adebayor and Jermain Defoe likely to rely on game time from the bench as back-up.

While Gareth Bale’s heroics saved Tottenham time and again in 2012/13, Adebayor (25 games, five goals) and Defoe (34 games, 11 goals) were far from prolific, with the club a little too reliant on the Welshman’s talents from one Gameweek to the next. Soldado’s arrival is expected to remedy that and bearing in mind Adebayor and Defoe are priced at 8.0 and 8.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) respectively, a ceiling of 9.5 looks likely for the Premier League debutant.

Granted, if Bale stays, it’ll take a brave Fantasy manager to overlook the Welshman but an eye-catching run of opening fixtures will also bring Soldado immediately onto the Fantasy radar. Home games against Swansea, Norwich, West Ham and Hull, allied with trips to Palace, Cardiff and Villa in the opening nine Gameweeks, affords the Spaniard the perfect platform to get quickly off the mark, with his goal-getting ability likely to persuade many a Fantasy manager to scramble aboard the early-season bandwagon. Those who don’t subscribe to the notion of “coverage” could well be looking to double up should Bale remain, while those unwilling to invest in more than one premium player per side will surely turn to the new boy as their Tottenham attacking coverage if the Welshman does decide to depart these shores.

Really hoping Fulham stump up the cash for Darren Bent - he'd make my team really purr.
They should do tho - £6m is a very fair price for a proven goalscorer still in his 20s in the current market

    evening all

i'm still working on my draft / research before i do a RMT. Focus is now on Silva and his GW1-3 prospects

Do people think he will be nailed on or prone to rotation? City's Isco or just one of many?

In any event, do you think he is likely to be part of the Spain squad / get pitch time for the upcoming internationals? I'm wondering if he'd be rotated/benched because of that.

    thank you

I really don't want to go near and Chelsea defender, except for potentially Ashley Cole.

Cesar may well have nailed down the RB spot. Which leaves Terry, Cahill, Luiz and Ivanovic to battle over 2 CBs.

Even if Ivanovic goes to RB, you still can't be sure who'll hold those 2 CB positions.

    THE PETR CECH OPTION

Is Cech a viable option for anyone?

+ Cech and Toure is £0.5m cheaper than the Mignolet and Cole/Ivan/Luiz partnership.
+ More flexibility for Week 3. You don't have to transfer him out as long as you've got a decent back-up.
+ He is nailed on. Who can we rely on in the Chelsea defence to start both matches? Probably just Cech and Cole. Terry, Ivanovic, Luiz, Cahill, Azpilicueta.... all of them are a bit risky.
    - Despite the cost saving mentioned above, you do need a back-up keeper for week 3 which will cost you at least £4.5.
    - You'll probably want to transfer Cech out eventually anyway, which is just delaying the transfer.
    - His price could fall in GW3 so you'll be tempted to get him out quickly so no different to owning a defender.
+ Having said that, you'll probably be transferring out a Chelsea defender before week 3. Possibly for a hit. Possibly not. If there is a saving to be made, and he is absolutely nailed on, why not make it Cech?
+ Cech scored more points than all Chelsea defenders last season. He's less likely to get a goal, assist or bonus points, but also less likely to get a yellow card than the Chelsea defenders. And there's always the chance of a penalty save.
+ Cech played more minutes than all Chelsea defenders last season. Points per minute? Well he's better than Ashley Cole. There's not a lot in it.

Player - Points - Minutes - Points Per Minute
    Terry - 66 - 950 - 0.0695
    Ivanovic - 143 - 2945 - 0.0486
    Luiz - 122 - 2632 - 0.0464
    Azpilicueta - 100 - 2199 - 0.0455
    Cech - 144 - 3195 - 0.0451
    Cole - 121 - 2790 - 0.0434
    Cahill - 94 - 2219 - 0.0424

He's in my team. Originally I had Mignolet and Boruc. Will probably change Cech to Mignolet at some point. He seems like a better option than Cole, and I'm saving half a million as well. What's everyone else thinking?

      No. He's not viable.

Too expensive by far for a goalkeeper and wastes a Chelsea slot. You also don't want to spend transfers on goalkeepers. It's either go with Mignolet and 4.0 or switch to Boruc - Marshall or another comparable pair.

How is a transfer on a goalkeeper any different to a transfer on a defender? Or are you not having a Chelsea defender?

It's exactly the same as having a Chelsea defenders, in my eyes, except you get the extra flexibility of a spare outfield slot. And a bit cheaper than my Mignolet/Cole pairing.

It doesn't quite work that way. It's different, trust me.

The fact you have 5 defenders gives you flexibility to change funds around fluidly. You may even have to lose all the big defenders.

Goalkeepers are much more difficult to move, with less up side. You've got to find a steady pair to last a few weeks.

My steady pair should be Mignolet and Boruc. Cech and Boruc works well for the first few weeks as well. I know it's a bit of a ball-ache transfer to do. One that you would make only if you have no other transfers to make that could possibly improve your side. But I can't really see how it's much different to transferring a defender.

Goalkeepers are more difficult to move psychologically, but in fact there's no reason why they should be a less profitable move than a defender, unless you're bringing someone in with consistent attacking potential.

Get what you mean, but I think it's an example of short term thinking.

Also, for what it's worth, I am now no longer a Mignolet owner. The way I see it, there's a very good chance I'll want two Liverpool attackers at some point. If Toure is such a bargain at 5.0 and starts every game, he's got to be picked which means I can't get all 3 LPools unless I lose Mignolet.

Off topic, but do you expect Toure to start every game? 10 league starts for City last season. 32 years old. He's my biggest worry in this Cech plan. I personally think Mignolet is a much better option that Kolo Toure. If he can nail down a place though, then I'll be on him.

like it. i think 1 cech save point will 9 times out of 10 be enough to beat ashley cole's dgw score. if you're on a 2 goalkeeper strategy it makes sense as like you say him not playing gw3 puts less strain on your team than an outfield guy not playing. people thinking about a 4.0 keeper + a bigger keeper it's harder to justify

He's definitely an option since nailed-on Chelsea starters are so thin on the ground. But it's better to start with Migs to begin with if you can I reckon, since the eventual downgrade is inevitable. A lot will depend on individual team balance I guess.

I understand that. But the same argument can be made for any Chelsea defender. Having Cole, having Terry, having Ivanovic. Whoever. I think 90% of people on here are planning on getting them out by week 3.

So why not just make that a goalkeeper? And maybe you can delay that inevitable transfer for a few weeks without it costing you a slot. Plus you'll have a decent defensive option in week 3.

Of course but with defenders, there's the chance you could jump onto an emerging bandwagon instead, whereas transferring Cech out will only ever lead to Migs in. It's a small point admittedly, but who knows who could come to the fore in GW1? Could even be a scramble for Kolorov 😉

Options. There are a ton more options and you can save money.

The plan for me is to downgrade on Luiz (if he's my Chelsea starter). The thing is, I have so many choices. My initial plan is to get City, but if Tottenham or Arsenal get going, I have cheap options there to pick up.

If I wanted to do the same for Cech, I would have options but wouldn't save much money and only have the one keeper who I might not want long term.

The benefit of having a defender is the potential for attacking points, which you don't have with Cech. Cech only scored 7 or 8 pts in last years DGW; Ivanovic on the other hand was a beast because of his goals/assists.

I am hoping (desperately?) that Cole will do an Ivanovic this year, but judging by his recent bedroom exploits, he's likely to be too shagged out.

      Nice post.

The problem with the goalkeeper position is that you're banking on them having a clean sheet. At least with the defenders, you have a chance of an assist and/or goal.

Yes, there's still the chance with the goalkeeper, but unlikely.

Yep - but as I explained with my points per minute, there really isn't too much in it. Defenders don't score or assist that many. Chances are the one you choose will do neither. And they have a higher chance of a booking.

You are spot on here. More often than not keepers outscore their teams defenders. The chance of goals and assists is highly overrated around here.

I think you're quite right - I see no difference transferring out a keeper as against a defender, and they come with their own replacement cover at no cost. Risk-free in my view - you may lose a small amount of cash, but that's gonna be true with most of the CHE players that people don't want to keep past GW3 - stick with it 😉

I made this very same point earlier in the week and strangely got exactly the same responses from different managers that you don't want to transfer a keeper..........I was as baffled as you as to the real effect of it being any different to transferring a defender!

I woke up this morning intent on posting something similar about Cech. Wouldn't have gone into quite the same detail though, so well done. He is in my team and will be out when deemed necessary (probably for Mignolet, or a 4.0 mill keeper if they are getting starts).

Cech has the advantage that you can have 4 double gameweek players and still remove enough to field a team in gw3
So for those intending Lukaku and Benteke , Cech is a better option than a Chelsea defender
If only planning on three DGW players then it probably best to go with a defender

        Hope this helps

I still think Cech has an advantage with 3 DGW players in case something goes wrong with another player.

          For example:

          Dzeko gets rotated
          Sturridge gets injured
          Aspas is out of favour
Kaboul returns from injury forcing Dawson out
Kim isn't what we thought he would be
          Cattermole gets suspended
          Remy gets sentenced

Cech is a safe option. If worst comes to worst, we can leave him in there for a few more weeks without having to take a hit or wildcard. He'll keep clean sheets, especially under Mourinho.

Once everything starts to smooth out, you can transfer him to another keeper without taking a hit. Might be week 3 if you're lucky. Might be week 6 if you're not. But you have the ability to catch those bandwagons and throw away those broken wagons without having to worry about 3 outfielders not having a fixture.

I've personally got Cech in and thinking he's the one to have for the season, but just not 100% convinced on the overall spend for a keeper.

Rotation has always done pretty good in value terms, but there doesn't seem to be great value amongst the options this year as there has been previously.

Would think Chelsea are going to be tighter again this year under Mourinho.

Of all the defensive options, they've even admitted that Cole has injury problems that now have to be managed I believe? So thinking that's the route I'm going, but haven't convinced myself. I'm sure I'll get excited at some point downgrading Cech and upgrading elsewhere............

I can't see that many punters signing up. It'll have to be UK only as well. There'll be 20,000 I reckon. I'll be one of them. At £10, that'll be £200,000 total at least, which is a nice little earner.

The most interesting thing I took from this was Bale's statistic: 75 chances created, just 4 assists.

Apply Soldado's conversion rate to Bale's chances created implies 20 assists 😯

Shame they won't be playing in the same team.

    A) Dzeko and Walcott (+0.5 saved)

    or

    B) Giroud and Silva

I think B offers the security of gametime and starts which is crucial at the beginning of the season. But I can't help but think that A has potentially much more explosive returns.

Been looking at peoples' RMTs coming through on here and I think there are some great budget players that people are forgetting and some players who are getting too much attention.

Players who deserve more attention -

    1. Rickie Lambert - 7.5 - Although he is mentioned on here every now and again I am surprised that there isn't that much love for him, especially with his favourable fixtures. Last year he was the 3rd top points scorer in the league, only RVP and Suarez (who I don't believe will be in the league come the start of the season) scored more points. Lambert is an incredible 6.5 cheaper than RVP, meaning RVP is nearly double his price! With 15 goals and 8 assists last year and seemingly fixture proof he is a no-brainer for me. Southampton, I believe, are a top 10 team, Lambert position is unthreatened atm (he played the most amount of minutes of any forward last season) and finally he has set pieces and penalties with a 100% conversion rate!

    2. Stephane Sessegnon - 7.0 - Arguably he is a little pricey for a bottom 10 club's midfielder but what really attracts me to him, as with Lambert are his fixtures - FUL, sou, cry. For a start he scored in each fixture against Fulham last season and although he only played Southampton once, the Sunderland team won and drew in the 2 matches against Soton last season. He scored 7 and assisted 5 last season as well as picking up 16 BAPS. Even better his form is continuing pre-season.

    3. Sascha Riether - 5.0 - With budget defenders seemingly vital this year Riether falls under a 'not-so expensive' category in my opinion. Riether has a very strong attacking potential with 6 assists and 1 goals last year. What makes the Fulham defence even stronger is their new signings. Stekelenburg and Amorebieta are both world class defenders who will firm up the Fulham backline.

Who people are loving but I am advising to avoid -

    1. Nicholas Anelka - 5.5 - I know I will get arguments against this but hey ho. In the 11-12 (Chelsea) and the 12-13 (Shanghai) season Anelka only scored 4 goals PUT TOGETHER. He is not the striker he used to be and I think that after the first few gameweeks Long will start instead of him. I don't think he is even guaranteed to start gameweek 1! But hey put him in your teams enjoy 2s and slip down the ranks if u want.

    2. The Villa Defence - I have seen a few people tempted by them for the double but that really is not a good idea! When they played Arsenal and Chelsea away last season they conceded 9 goals altogether! This would have meant -4 points. So if they playes 2 games it would mean 0 points if this would have been a double gwk last year. These seem to be Villa's 'bogey team'.

Well there you go, just a few thoughts...

Any love for Stevie Gerrard on here?

I seem to remember him scoring or assisting for about 12 games on the trot towards the end of last season. Just thinking that with Suarez's absence, it might force Gerrard into taking some of the burden off Liverpool goals-wise.

Starting to feel awfully settled on this lot, so in the interest of interest I'm throwing it out here...

    GK: Migs/Lewis, standard.
DF: Terry, Collins, Shaw, Brayford, Chester. Terry the only anomaly. But come on, if he's fit he's going to start the first two games at least. And if he's not, I'll pick Cahill. I don't think Ivanovic is nailed on either, Luiz could be rested first game and JT has the biggest upside for his price of the lot. Cole would be boring.
MF: Hazard, Walcott, Coutinho, Jarvis, Meyler. Tempted by Silva but think these three are more explosive. Jarvis's record suggests an upturn from last season and value, Meyler covers his tougher weeks, should be nailed on and is prone to the odd goal.
FW: RVP, Lukaku, Dzeko. The two big team value punts and Mr. reliable, who I want from the off. He'll be captain most weeks 4 onwards, he'll be captain week 2, I'm happy with team balance with him in and there's not that many other strikers that appeal.

Personally I think I'd go Oscar and Aspas over Coutinho and Lukaku saves you 1.5 which can upgrade Chester, Meyler and Lewis/Brayford

That is an interesting idea. I have been considering Oscar, I just think going without Lukaku is a big risk. I'm happy with a bargain basement bench to begin with, but could potentially upgrade Jarvis.

      Looks fine.

I'm going without RvP for a variety of reasons, but some people need the comfort of his captaincy which is fair.

Defense is a bit weak looking but it's a price you pay I guess. Not too shabby picks anyhow.

RvP is my big dilemma. I like what I have without him

But i don't have him, not sure how I'll stomach being at OT and watching us, and not wanting him to score.

Making a return to the site for start of the new season 🙂

After scanning through various posts and pages I have (rather hastily) managed to put together a decent looking side.

    Mig (Marshall)
UBER (thanks ITWT) B.Jones - Turner - Clyne (S Taylor, Figueroa)
    Silva - Hazard - Walcott - Coutinho (Kim/Whittingham)
    Dzeko - Lukaku - Sturridge
    +0.5

Yes, the defence looks a little cheap but it rotates very well and requires little maintenance. (See here): http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/19/frisking-the-fixtures-gameweek-1/?hc_page=7#hc_comment_4986586

I feel Pool will buy a new CB which may limit Toure's starts (especially if Skrtel leaves) and we saw last season that Wenger could drop Chesney.

Migs and Mert are absolutely nailed, sometimes it's worth paying 0.5 more for the extra security of not having to worry about a start.

I like your fix set of Anelka, Clyne/Shaw as they deliver strong value for cheap options with time guaranteed.

Mirallas, Hazard and Walcott should be good Premium options without taking up too much budget.

What Premium striker is a must for you then? Soldado an option.

Also not sure about Parr. I think there is better value with someone like Turner (Norwich) to start with.

Great question, I actually think that Nolan will just clinch it.........which is strange as I have Mirallas over him in my team right now!

Everton are going to take time to settle in and all the noises coming out of Upton Park are that Carroll is going to be fit enough (its not like he runs anyway) to start the season and WHU fixtures are close to the kindest out there for the first 6 weeks.
