Tottenham’s new striker Roberto Soldado and the Fantasy Premier League game’s new Bonus Points System were among the key issues vexing the community over the past seven days. We take our weekly look back at the big discussions that have recently slipped off the Hot Topics widget, as well as catch up with the latest developments in our community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Transfer dealings have caught the eye of the community this week, with Mathmo running the rule over Tottenham’s latest recruit Soldado. Mathmo predicts he may take a little while to adapt to the English Premier League but once he does the goals are set to flow. Be warned though, it seems that Soldado is unlikely to rack up many assists.

Soldado and Wayne Rooney were the latest subjects of our resident video expert Brutus619, who has been analysing their performances to assess their key strengths. Turns out both could be set for ‘surprise package’ status this season.

The 3rd Turd has been at his abacus again to look closely at the FPL’s new bonus system and create one of our most popular ever comment posts. His analysis based on 2011/12 data gives a game by game breakdown of how the new bonus allocation would have affected players’ points during that season. Turns out that goalkeepers could be the surprise beneficiaries of the changes. Make a cuppa before sitting down and soaking this one up.

Fifth midfield options provided the inspiration for Kings of Lyon’s post, which sparked an interesting discussion about the best budget options in midfield.  Could Everton’s Ross Barkley be a surprise selection in teams? Athletico Timbo certainly thinks he’s worth considering. For Evs, Cardiff’s Kim could be a shrewd purchase at just 5m in the FPL game.  According to our resident Wales expert the word on the streets of Cardiff is that not only is Kim nailed on, but a role in “the hole” behind a lone forward beckons.

Ever wondered how the Premier League’s newest recruits would have fared under an FPL scoring model in their previous leagues? The Puntmaster was on hand to delve into the stats and create these remarkable tables of their progress if FPL points had been applied to leagues such as The Championship and La Liga.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for strikers last week. The best player in the round, Robert Lewandowski, moved to BonZ’s Cardiff, while the leaders of the game are now Norwich, under The Shadow’s guidance. This week, clubs will be looking to trade players amongst themselves.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s leagues return for their third installment, and along with it the live score site, press releases, matchday reviews and a lot more. If you want to represent a European club of your choice, be sure to check out the details and register here before the deadline of August 9.

          Fair enough.

I'd just prefer Nolan for more goal threat though, personally.

Richards is so injury prone he will be out before long. Zaba is a full back and there is no logic benching a natural CB in Lescott to play him there.

It's all 'if's' though so it doesn't really count for anything.

No Luiz at the end of that sentence doesn't make alot of sense but if you think he is a must have I think you are mistaken. He might not even be a Chelsea player if Barca offer enough.

Obviously he won't be benched every game - but how often were WBA forwards rotated last season.

Plus his record for Chelsea in his last 2 seasons was 7 goals in 41 games (30 starts) and he only managed something 3 goals in 20 odd games for Shanghai.

    BIG DEBATE!

What is the best team you can put together with coverage from the 'top 6' teams?

I have managed to get a team that boasts:

Walcott, Hazard, Soldado, Van Persie, Coutinho and Dzeko

Are there any alternatives to this that come in less than £59m, but are similar in strength?

    Foster (Boruc)

Zabaleta - Mertesacker - Cole (Brayford, Chester)

Mirallas - Walcott - Hazard - Coutinho (Thomas)

    Soldado - Lukaku - Anelka
    1.5 in the bank

Help please, I'm thinking Lukaku to Negredo/Dzeko after the dgw.

Should I switch Coutinho + Anelka ---> Aspas + Silva?

What same price combo do you guys think it's better:

      1. Cech + Boruc + Toure

      Pros:
      - Mourinho's Chelsea will get a lot of clean sheets through the season and Cech is definitely a nailed on option
      - Boruc comes handy for empty GW3, tough Chelsea fixtures and possible Cech injury
      Cons:
      - Toure could easily get out of favor or just be rotated with Skrtel

      2. Mignolet + 4.0 goalkeeper + Ivanovic
      Pros:
      - Ivanovic is constant goal threat and has explosive potential. He could possibly play both matches GW1 - one as CB, one as RB
      Cons:
      - Ivanovic will be rotated
      - No goalkeeper cover, if Mignolet is injured

      What do you think?

I like the first one. Rodgers likes to play one experienced player at the back every time. Toure is nailed on if they don't sign a good defender.
Brouc will at least give you cover when Cech isn't playing but the 4.0 won't

Seriously though, you're right. Insofar as it actually exists, it represents the collective wisdom of the best players in the game. But it's really not a single team at all, it's just a good shortlist of 20-30 players. Any team drawn from that shortlist gets called template.

Most people's primary aim is winning their mini-league so unless everyone in their ML reads this site (unlikely for most) then the template team will be perfectly different to their rivals.

Hello, Thomas and Peppie are proud to announce that we will have a doubles tournament taking place. The tournament is called Friends Life competition. How does it work? There are 3 groups of 6 teams. 18 teams in total. There are 3 groups names; one Is North Group,South Group and the other is West Midlands/Wales/West Division. The three regional groups of six teams reducing the number of group stage games to ten to be played with the top two teams in each group plus the two third-placed teams with the best records progressing to the quarter-final stage. The teams are as followed; Derbyshire Falcons, Durham Dynamos, Essex Eagles, Gloucestershire Gladiators, Hampshire Royals, Kent Spitfires, Lancashire Lightning, Leicestershire Foxes, Middlesex Panthers, Northants Steelbacks, Notts Outlaws, Somerset, Surrey Lions, Sussex Sharks, Warwickshire Bears, Welsh Dragons, Worcestershire Royals, Yorkshire Carnegie. If you want to join then email me at kaif_26_2012@hotmail.co.uk
The 18 teams are divided into three groups of six and each group plays a double round-robin tournament. The top two teams from each group and the top two third-placed teams qualify for the knockout stage: a three-round single-elimination tournament. The top team from each group and the best second-placed team will each play in a different quarter-final at their home ground. A free draw determines the placement of the remaining four teams and the semi-final and final match-ups.
I hope you take part and enjoy taking part in my comp! 😀

can't see him displace Brunt /(possibly Anelka?) for penos - but still, 150 pts at Swansea with regular minutes
