Newcastle’s director of football Joe Kinnear finally made his first major move into the summer transfer market yesterday evening by snapping up Loic Remy on a season-long loan deal from QPR. The 26-year-old Frenchman – who was previously linked with a move to Tyneside last January – revealed his international ambitions played a significant part in the switch, with next summer’s World Cup in Brazil clearly on his radar.

“I’m very happy to be a Newcastle player. It will be a huge honour to play for such a big club. I was very flattered by the Club’s interest in me back in January and also very happy that they showed interest in me again this summer. I am very motivated this year to get into the World Cup squad for my country. I know in order to do that I need to have a big season and a successful campaign with Newcastle United. I am focussed on helping the team achieve success this season and scoring as many goals as I can.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth academy, Remy’s career began in 2006 but the forward failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, making just 12 appearances over a season and a half at the club. Farmed out on loan to Lens midway through the 2007/08 campaign, Remy produced three goals and two assists in 10 matches, with his eye for goal persuading Nice to fork out a club record €8m in June 2008.

Remy’s impact was immediate in his new surrounds, with 11 goals and three assists in 32 appearances across his debut season before he racked up 14 goals and five assists in 34 matches the following year. After scoring once in two matches at the start of 2010/11, he was transferred to Marseille for €15m, though he was forced to undergo stringent medical tests after an initial assessment indicated he was suffering from a heart defect. Having been given the all-clear, Remy flourished in his first couple of league campaigns, producing 27 goals and 10 assists from 60 Ligue 1 matches but his final season at the club was far less successful. Demoted to the bench, he made just two starts and 12 sub appearances, notching a single goal, before QPR came calling back in January.

Despite dropping down to the Championship at the end of last term, Remy was quick to settle at Loftus Road. Although he turned out just 14 times for Harry Redknapp’s side, he still managed to finish the season as the R’s top scorer, having found the net on six occasions.

Remy has also represented his national side on 18 occasions and has produced four goals and an assist for Les Bleus.

The Prospects

Undoubtedly, the Magpies are in dire need for extra firepower for the season ahead. Alan Pardew’s side scored just 19 goals in 18 games following Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea back in January and found the net in only three of their final eight league matches, ironically clinching their league safety in a 2-1 win over Remy’s QPR in Gameweek 37.

Having failed to get his man first time around, Pardew was clearly delighted to finally clinch the Frenchman’s signature and his words suggest the new boy will be regarded as a key player for the Magpies in the upcoming campaign:

“Loic is a great player and I’m delighted that Joe has got him on board for us. He’ll be a great addition to the squad, he gives us strength and pace up front and I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of goals. It’s a big season for Loic, like it is for all our international players ahead of the World Cup, which will only provide extra incentive for him to play at the very top of his game.”

Pardew’s formation for the season ahead will be key as to how we assess the new boy’s potential. The Magpies boss has utilised 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 systems over the summer so far, though a 4-3-3 also looks viable, with Remy perhaps fielded on the right and Hatem Ben Arfa on the opposite flank, allowing Papiss Cisse to retain the lone forward slot. Ideally, though, a central berth is clearly the best scenario – a reverse out of position role out wide will dent Remy’s appeal, with Ben Arfa or even Moussa Sissoko appearing on our radars, should the latter get his wish and return to the role in “the hole” behind Cisse.

Priced at 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 by The Sun Dream Team, Remy has been handed a price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) earlier this afternoon – less than Cisse’s 8.5 yet more than Yoan Gouffran at 6.5 amongst Newcastle’s frontline options. One factor which may fall in his favour could be spot-kick duties; with Ba now departed and Cisse failing to impress from the spot, Remy may vie with Ben Arfa in the penalty pecking order.

Looking at the opening schedule, while a Gameweek 1 trip to City is far from favourable, Newcastle’s following four fixtures (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) offer plenty reason to be optimistic. The downside, however, is Remy is currently struggling with a calf complaint and, while Pardew is still hopeful he will make the bench in time for the season opener at the Etihad, the Magpies boss has also admitted he is still on the lookout for more options up front, with the club still linked with a bid for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis.

While there’s no doubt a role alongside Cisse would make Remy a viable alternative, it may take a few weeks until we are afforded a proper assessment of his potential. With a lack of pre-season training and more new signings perhaps imminent, it’s yet to be established whether Remy has been earmarked for a wide role – such a scenario would prove a major deterrent, with far more secure, central options in the mid-price bracket elsewhere.

Trying to get an idea of how many people would be interested in joining a Draft League for the FPL this season. For those of you not familiar it is the system that a lot of the US fantasy games use. The basic idea is that there is only one of every player available, so only 1 Van Persie, 1 Bale etc and the managers each take turns selecting a player until they each have a full squad, i.e no player values or budgets. The game will be run on the FPL website (you'll have to get a second team!) and follow exactly the same rules.

    * Probably a max of 10 managers each picking a squad of 15 (as usual 2 GK, 5 DEF, 5 MID & 3 FOR)
    * Take turns picking players in pre determined draft order 1-10. Every player not picked is a Free Agent (FA)
    * FA's can be exchanged for players in your squad you no longer want. FA priority order is the reverse of the draft order (useful to have first pick of the free agents in January!)
*Trades within the league are fine as long as they are no grossly one sided.

What you reckon? Anyone keen or just completely confused? 🙂

I know the speculation around the DGW abounds (rest, rotation, int'l friendlies etc.) however, thoughts on Oscar being a decent shout as a CHE option...

He's been deployed as a No.10 & faired pretty well this week against Inter & AC Milan...

Why shouldn't we find a GW1 spot for him?

Agreed - you need to maximise the potential returns and having Oscar and Lukaku is risky, but it just might pay off. Personally I'm spreading the risk and having Lukaku, Hazard & Ivanovic.

Why is no-one going with Ross Barkley as their cheap midfielder?

Not had much of a chance before but great pre-season form and new management might give him more of a look in. Not saying its going to be a revelation but at 4.5 he can only go up and its worth the risk as at least he is attacking unlike most 4.5

Why is it assumed that Ba won't play in the first match for Chelsea? It seems Torres is out of the question due to the Spain game, has Lukaku nailed down the 2nd striker spot? If so what hope does this leave Ba for the rest of the season?!

Who thinks that Lukaku realistically has a shot of playing in GW2 and/or producing against United away?

The appeal of Lukaku in DGW is obvious: you know he'll probably do something and the Chelsea rotation risk is mitigated by double the possible playing time. Even one of the two games would yield something against Hull or Villa. This has been talked about ad nauseum.

But then I feel I need to do a double transfer for a hit to switch out Chelsea defender and Lukaku before United match.

    Thoughts, insults?

So there's been a lot of talk about the Chelsea rotation, particularly in midfield. My view is that if there was no dgw1 we'd still be looking at having one or two players for the favourite team in the bookies opinion to win the PL. Especially considering its Hull at home. In my opinion the fact it's a DGW only serves to double the rotation risk players chances of playing, making anything else a bonus.
Say it's pre-season and I've narrowed it down to Vertonghen or Luiz. I'd rate Luiz at a 70% chance of playing to Verts 99%. I think, start of season, I'd go Luiz regardless of the double, at home and the extra .5 million makes up for the risk

Fair point - although if it wern't a double (and if Vert wasn't injured) you'd be looking at first 3GWs and TOT definately have a more favourable first 3 fixtures. So in fact the double makes all the difference in this case

Something a little different, son... SHEEEE-IT

    Migs (Boruc)

I think you want 3 Chelsea. Walters I'm not a fan of, better options but I wouldn't say he's a horrible pick.

I like Gerrard, if I go with a Liverpool mid I am strongly considering him over Coutinho.

I can't see Terry playing both, I think they'll rest him midweek in prep for Manu, pick a more reliable def, Cole or Cech, maybe Ivanovic.

But yeah nothing wrong with different!

You dont have to stick to the template too rigidly a million over or under in one position shouldnt make much difference, but its a good way of monitoring spending to create the right balance
Think i will be half a million over in defence due to the DGW

    Coutinho/ Hazard/ Toure/ Walcott

    Dzeko/ Aspas/ Lukaku

With £1m to spare. Much like everyone else's with Aspas and Toure being the differentials I suppose. Don't like going into the season with any money spare but this is the best I can come up with.

I'd change Toure for Silva mate. Toure is not complete junk in FPL and will get the odd goal/assist but at the end of the day he'll be playing pretty deep. I think of the 2 (Fernandinho and Yaya) Fernandinho will be one to get more forward if anything.

Other than that all decent picks!

Thought that would be the response tbh. I just can't see Silva starting GW1 over the likes of Nasri or Milner but I do agree Toure isn't the greatest pick. Well probably change him back to Mirallas and just stick with Dzeko as City cover

I'd start planning without Bale to be honest mate cos I think he's gone.

Use the 2mil bank to upgrade your strikers, at the minute you'd have one of Tonev/Moore playing week in week out which frankly you don't want.

So, downgrade Bale and use the other 2mil to upgrade strikers. Lukaku is a good shout because I think 3 Chelsea for the DGW will be important. Dzeko, Giroud, Lambert, Berbatov, Sturridge, Soldado, Aspas are all decent picks

Garrido is at risk from Olsson, swap him for M.Turner who will be nailed on.

      Baker wont play, swap him

COVERAGE is something that is regularly mentioned but is something that I am a near total non-believer in, but it did make me curious that if you literally made this your entire focus what kind of team can you put out and so I played around and quickly realised that you can put together a team with the front 7 of:

    Hazard - Silva - Coutinho - Mirallas

    RVP - Soldado - Giroud

Now that is some serious coverage and your gk, at least 3-4 of your defs and sub mid are all starters.

You can cheapen it up with RVP -> Kawaga or including Dzeko up front and Wally in midfield but if you really want to cover every single one of the top 7 teams with their leading attackers then go for it but I for one will just be going with balance and planning for a few special run of fixtures as the season progresses.

FUGLY! its a whole bunch of 4.0 with a couple of 4.5's thrown in. Possible to get starters at those prices technically though. If Rooney sorts his life out of Kagawa gets true game time though then it becomes very doable.

I do believe that has more to do with every other Man U attacking player being trash last year than it does for the sake of coverage.

I think its very interesting the number of people who say they don't believe in coverage but then also don't like any RMT that has two attacking players from the same team in it. I don't believe in coverage myself and so I am happy to start the season with Sturridge and Coutinho and may even end up with Walcott and Giroud also. I think its an interesting relationship when you add in multiple team mates into the conversation.

how can it be Soldado if he's never kicked a ball in the preniership? If he ws that good surely he wouldn't be leaving spain to play for Spurs?
