Newcastle’s director of football Joe Kinnear finally made his first major move into the summer transfer market yesterday evening by snapping up Loic Remy on a season-long loan deal from QPR. The 26-year-old Frenchman – who was previously linked with a move to Tyneside last January – revealed his international ambitions played a significant part in the switch, with next summer’s World Cup in Brazil clearly on his radar.

“I’m very happy to be a Newcastle player. It will be a huge honour to play for such a big club. I was very flattered by the Club’s interest in me back in January and also very happy that they showed interest in me again this summer. I am very motivated this year to get into the World Cup squad for my country. I know in order to do that I need to have a big season and a successful campaign with Newcastle United. I am focussed on helping the team achieve success this season and scoring as many goals as I can.”

The History

A product of the Lyon youth academy, Remy’s career began in 2006 but the forward failed to establish himself as a first-team regular, making just 12 appearances over a season and a half at the club. Farmed out on loan to Lens midway through the 2007/08 campaign, Remy produced three goals and two assists in 10 matches, with his eye for goal persuading Nice to fork out a club record €8m in June 2008.

Remy’s impact was immediate in his new surrounds, with 11 goals and three assists in 32 appearances across his debut season before he racked up 14 goals and five assists in 34 matches the following year. After scoring once in two matches at the start of 2010/11, he was transferred to Marseille for €15m, though he was forced to undergo stringent medical tests after an initial assessment indicated he was suffering from a heart defect. Having been given the all-clear, Remy flourished in his first couple of league campaigns, producing 27 goals and 10 assists from 60 Ligue 1 matches but his final season at the club was far less successful. Demoted to the bench, he made just two starts and 12 sub appearances, notching a single goal, before QPR came calling back in January.

Despite dropping down to the Championship at the end of last term, Remy was quick to settle at Loftus Road. Although he turned out just 14 times for Harry Redknapp’s side, he still managed to finish the season as the R’s top scorer, having found the net on six occasions.

Remy has also represented his national side on 18 occasions and has produced four goals and an assist for Les Bleus.

The Prospects

Undoubtedly, the Magpies are in dire need for extra firepower for the season ahead. Alan Pardew’s side scored just 19 goals in 18 games following Demba Ba’s departure to Chelsea back in January and found the net in only three of their final eight league matches, ironically clinching their league safety in a 2-1 win over Remy’s QPR in Gameweek 37.

Having failed to get his man first time around, Pardew was clearly delighted to finally clinch the Frenchman’s signature and his words suggest the new boy will be regarded as a key player for the Magpies in the upcoming campaign:

“Loic is a great player and I’m delighted that Joe has got him on board for us. He’ll be a great addition to the squad, he gives us strength and pace up front and I’m sure he’ll bring plenty of goals. It’s a big season for Loic, like it is for all our international players ahead of the World Cup, which will only provide extra incentive for him to play at the very top of his game.”

Pardew’s formation for the season ahead will be key as to how we assess the new boy’s potential. The Magpies boss has utilised 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2 systems over the summer so far, though a 4-3-3 also looks viable, with Remy perhaps fielded on the right and Hatem Ben Arfa on the opposite flank, allowing Papiss Cisse to retain the lone forward slot. Ideally, though, a central berth is clearly the best scenario – a reverse out of position role out wide will dent Remy’s appeal, with Ben Arfa or even Moussa Sissoko appearing on our radars, should the latter get his wish and return to the role in “the hole” behind Cisse.

Priced at 7.8 in the Sky Sports game and 3.0 by The Sun Dream Team, Remy has been handed a price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) earlier this afternoon – less than Cisse’s 8.5 yet more than Yoan Gouffran at 6.5 amongst Newcastle’s frontline options. One factor which may fall in his favour could be spot-kick duties; with Ba now departed and Cisse failing to impress from the spot, Remy may vie with Ben Arfa in the penalty pecking order.

Looking at the opening schedule, while a Gameweek 1 trip to City is far from favourable, Newcastle’s following four fixtures (WHM, FUL, avl, HUL) offer plenty reason to be optimistic. The downside, however, is Remy is currently struggling with a calf complaint and, while Pardew is still hopeful he will make the bench in time for the season opener at the Etihad, the Magpies boss has also admitted he is still on the lookout for more options up front, with the club still linked with a bid for Lyon’s Bafetimbi Gomis.

While there’s no doubt a role alongside Cisse would make Remy a viable alternative, it may take a few weeks until we are afforded a proper assessment of his potential. With a lack of pre-season training and more new signings perhaps imminent, it’s yet to be established whether Remy has been earmarked for a wide role – such a scenario would prove a major deterrent, with far more secure, central options in the mid-price bracket elsewhere.

So many people talking about wildcarding early when the other option is to take one or two 4pt hits.

Someone asked a while back how many points you'd exchange for an unused WC and the general consensus was 50 points.

Your wildcard should be used to maximum gain and should be worth a lot more than 4, 8, or even 12 points if used correctly.

If you use it in GW3 with the international break then it's not just about points though. It's then also about team value.

If I really need to I'll take a hit or two but I reckon that'll be unnecessary.

    Mignolet - Price

    Luiz - Koscielny - M. Turner - Shaw - Brayford

    Hazard - Silva - Michu - Mirallas - Thomas

    Girouuuuu - Soldado - Lukaku

    Also, undecided between Michu/Coutinho....

~Sides of The Fence- #1: To RVP, Or Not To RVP?~

(This is the first installment of a new series I am starting called 'Sides of The Fence' or 'SOTF', where I will be comparing 2 options that gravely affect your team, and giving you my ideal team for each choice)

When it comes to picking a team, you're now either on the RVP side of the fence- unbalanced but safe, or you're on the balanced side. I have put together the following teams, which I view as being
    'ideal'.

If you're adamant about having RVP, this is the team to have:

    Mignolet • (Davis)
    Collins • Brayford • Cole • (Parr • Chester)
    Walcott • Hazard • Coutinho • Mirallas • (Thomas)
    RVP • Lukaku • Anelka

    Penciled in:
    • Cole>Coleman
    • Lukaku>Soldado

As you can see, the template midfield is present. That's all for the midfield. The strike force has Mr. Overpriced himself, along with Lukaku. A but of a punt with a DGW. He will become Soldado by GW3. Anelka is a good, cheap option who can be rotated with Thomas to play each week. The defence is fairly cheap. You will rotate the 4.0M week in week out, playing Coleman or Toure (who was Cole) every week with Collins. The keepers, pretty standard.

If you're like me, and want a balanced team, this is the team to have:

    Mignolet • (Davis)
    Cole • Coleman • Mertesacker • (Chester • Brayford)
    Walcott • Hazard • Coutinho • Mirallas • (Kim)
    Sturridge • Lukaku • Dzeko
    +0.5

    Penciled in:
    • Cole>Collins
    • Lukaku>Soldado

This team is a lot more balanced. The midfield is the same, bar Kim, who is a better 5th mid if you have an extra 0.5M. Sturridge over Soldado GW1, as the latter has the Spanish friendly and may not start. Lukaku is only for DGW, and will become Soldado later. Dzeko is another punt, but will start the first few games. Keepers are the same. Defence is notably stronger, with only 2 4.0M as backup, and 3 starters with good CS record.

So, essentially you should be picking a team similar to one of the above. There are other options to consider, like Benteke, Giroud, Snodgrass, the list goes on. But IMO those are the best teams you can have, /w and /wo RVP.

    Opinions?...

      Risky strikers

Studge is injured all the time
Lukaku is a massive rotation risk
Dzeko rotation risk also, even if he starts, he will be subbed after 60 mins regularly

Sturridge has returned to training, and is set to start the season. I also mentioned that you can replace him with Soldado, Giroud etc.

Re You're team comment: Yes its similar, because its the template midfield, beat attack you can get with RVP, and usual cheap defence. Different DGW defender, plus downgrades to make way for Soldado.

I think the RVP team is more balanced

I guess it is in a way, purely because of the cheap defence. By balanced, I meant the fact there were decent defenders, midfielders and attackers, rather than starting a cheap midfielder/striker and 4.0M defenders weekly.

the lack of MU players in the what you call "balanced team" is worrying, even if you dont have RvP in there surely you cant deny the champions record overall in the season? I would for one be tempted to drop coutinho and then put kagawa in

    I'm worried about Mirallas.

He's in my team and i agree he could be a suprise package this year as he will be OOP. However this Barca kid Deulofeu is really very good (see highlights video below) and his preferred position seems to be on the right of a front three, precisley where we were expecting Mirallas to play. Now i don't think Deulofeu is going to be first choice but if he plays a few games and has the kind of impact he usually does then Martinez will have to play him, he could be scoring for fun come Christmas.

This would put Mirallas firmly in the 'rotation risk' category and £7.5 mill is too much to have on the bench. Mirallas is staying in my team for now as he'll probably be starting all of the first 6-8 games, but i'm keeping a close eye on Deulofeu at £6 mill as when he starts scoring his value will go through the roof.

This. You'd think Pienaar would vie for either Mirallas or Deulefu, don't see why either one of them couldn't be use on the left as an inside forward.

Except Peinaar plays exclusively from the left where he is very good and proven over a few seasons, Deulofeu plays from the right - where Mirallas plays. Plus Barca wouldn't have let one of their brightest future stars go on loan unless he would get games, Martinez has a track record of developing loanees (Cleverly, Di Santo) and young players by giving them lots of game time. This is why the big clubs send their youngsters to him.

Is anybody else considering Carl Jenkinson from the start? He has started the majority of Arsenal's pre-season games at RB, and their only other option at RB is Sagna but Wenger keeps playing him at CB. I tried to dig around for some extra info on this and whilst it's not the most reliable source the link below seems to suggest that Wenger and some Gooners view Sagna as a back-up CB after an impressive performance against Sunderland last year.

    http://gb1886.wordpress.com/2013/07/21/bacary-sagna-the-centre-back-conundrum-and-carl-jenkinson/

Will anybody take a punt on Jenkinson, he offers great value @ 4.5 in a good defense with favourable fixtures?

Nope. Sagna may be a back-up CB but he'll play RB when both Kos and Mert are available. By the time one of them can't make a match Verm will probably be back as 1st choice back up.

The majority of my housemates are gooners, they went down to the emirates cup last weekend, and they all agree that Sagna has a good chance of being a CB with Jenko being the first choice RB. Two of three of them are taking the punt fantasy wise
