KPI Analysis – Lambert and Rodriguez

Over the last few weeks, a combination of factors have elevated Southampton’s Jay Rodriguez into many pre-season Fantasy squads. The Saints’ kind opening run of fixtures has caught the eye, while Rodriguez’s more budget-friendly appeal over Rickie Lambert has also played a part in how we assess his potential across the Fantasy games. Having scored three times in the opening couple of summer friendlies, Rodriguez has been quick to hit form and as interest in the former Burnley man gathers, we use the Key Performance Indicators (KPI) to analyse the impact of Mauricio Pochettino on both Rodriguez and Lambert over the previous season.

As mentioned previously, the KPI helps us track certain key statistics which are indicative of a player’s form over a certain Gameweek range or season. Having ran the rule over Robin Van Persie’s impact at United compared to his final year with Arsenal, we delve into last season’s data to look at the Saints duo’s performances from Gameweek 1-22 under Nigel Adkins compared to Gameweek 23-38, when Pochettino was installed as the new man in charge at St Mary’s. By also utilising the Comparison Tool across the two periods, there’s plenty for Fantasy managers to mull over.

By jove I think I have cracked it.

    a) Minimal amount spent on defence and keepers (and 1 Chelsea defender)
    b) A Chelsea captain coption
    c) RVP
    d) A front 7 full of huge potential

    Boruc - Davis
Cole - Alcaraz - Collins (Brayford - Chester)
Hazard - Cazorla - Snodgrass - Nolan (Thomas)
    RVP - Kone - Soldado

Hmmm...I'd want better gk cover. I think you have missed a trick with Migs. Otherswise Foster to go with Borat.
      Is Alcaraz likely to start?
Caz ahead of Wal is puzzling.
Would rather wait on Soldado first.

Otherwise, a reasonably handy team. 6/10.

        1) Alcaraz starting is a concern (I will wait until the deadline as Turner may come in)
        2) Cazorla should score better in terms of bonus points
        3) Personally I really like the look of Soldado
        4) Migs costs an extra £1m and goalkeepers are rarely worth the extra (£1.5m if you want a keeper to cover injuries/suspensions)
        5) Not sure about Aspas starting. I would prefer Kone - Everton's number one striker with fixtures to match.

Wal over Caz every time in FPL.
Soldado is purely a hunch. Go with what you know.
I lost out last season through missing gks/defs on good cs runs. Migs has great fix and it would be an opportunity missed to leave him out in my opinion. Put him with a 4.0 and you don't have to worry about rotation.
          Is Kone really no 1?

          2) maybe but walcott is more concistant, and more direct
          3) same here
          4) agreed
          5) is kone even nailed on?? has competition from Jelavic and anichebe. i'd prefer aspas, or dzeko

          - I agree with Neil, that defence is too weak. I recommend 3x£5-6m DEFs.
          - You *gotta* have a reserve GKP who's gonna play - it'll only cost an extra 0.5
          - Walcott's goals/assists will put him head and shoulders above Santi, regardless of bonuses
          - Give Sold ado a few weeks to see how he settles in
          - I totally agree with you about Line over Aspas, but I'm keeping an eye on both of them!

I'm betting irrationally big on Cardiff, given I've only seen a couple of the players play. Marshall as backup for Migs, Brayford for cheap D, Kim for cheap M.

Am I being idiotic? They work in my head and hook up the rest of the team, but feel on shaky ground.

The latter two make a great deal of sense but I'd rather have Boruc as my back up 4.5 GK. Southampton have invested in defence and I can see us being a more consistent team than newly promoted teams. I might be biased though. 🙂

Marshall works pretty well on weeks when Pool have extra-tough fixtures, but I agree Boruc seems the better keeper. (But what do I know--never seen Marshall play...)

My gut, with no evidence to support it, tells me Cardiff will succeed, whereas Hull and Palace will flop.

Evening gents, I've posted my team once a day for the last few days just to get some mixed reviews and the general opinion is that it's good and strong, just after some more opinions.

    Mignolet - Davis

Mertesacker, Ivanovic, Shaw - Brayford, Chester

Mirallas, Walcott, Hazard, Coutinho - Thomas

    Dzeko, Lakaku, Soldado

Anyone you'd change? Got 1 mil left in the bank.

I'd use 0.5 to upgrade Chester to Collins for a pretty fantastic Shaw/Collins rotation. Otherwise there's a risk of relying too heavily on newly-promoteds. You won't want to play Shaw every game.

      Like the rest. Good team.

Yeah exactly. There's nothing glaring elsewhere. I think that 0.5 would improve your defence much more than it'll improve anything else.

Considered the other 4.5 options to Thomas? You've done right to only spend 4.5m on your benched midfielder.

  13. Lambert vs J-Rod Rumbles On
    TexanRed
    • 10 Years

I posted this earlier today I stand by it:

JROD vs LAMBERT - A huge number of RMT's are including JRod this season but I just wanted to give my two cents on the issue.

I think that Jrod has been a touch over-hyped on FFS in through the pre-season and because of this Lambert has been massively over looked. We are talking about the 3rd highest scoring striker from last season at a mere 7.5m. Yes there is always a risk of SSN but he has worked his way through every tier of English football and so that is a much smaller risk than it to an English player than it is to foreign ones. Many are hyping up the performance of JRod as the season progressed but yes while he did improve, as he only scored once in his first 8 starts and none in his first 7 sub appearances, Lamberts form also improved as the season progressed, scoring 9 of his 15 goals from GW19 and onwards. In short Soton improved massively mid-late season and so naturally so did both of their strikers but Lambert always remained the main man in term of game time, field position and set piece responsibility.

Soton's opening 6 home games in the first 11 GWs are SUN, WHU, CPL, SWA, FUL, HUL. Even the good teams there don't travel well and other than Liv and ManU away the other fixtures should see a Soton team that has been very well invested in over the summer off to a flyer.

I am not saying that JRod is not a good punt at 6.0m as I think he will score points (not as many as Crouch imo) but by including him you are effectively ruling out the best sure thing value up front by some way in Rickie. 1.5m extra spend for me looks like being worth 60-80 pts and when many are taking even bigger punts on the likes of Lukaku, Dzeko and even a reserve OOP massive potential for rotation in the form of Aspas all for practically the same money he may not be a differential in the grand scheme of things but compared to the educated players that you are actually competing with then a chance of being a differential in your private leagues.

Jrod is much easier to settle on as the funds help elsewhere but an easy choice is rarely the right one!

But all just opinions Guns and so always stick with your gut. Not changing and me saying I told you so in a few weeks will be a lot easier to stomach than changing and you watching your personal pick bang em in!

Very helpful post, and plenty of food for thought.

I have avoided JRod - and at 6m I believe Wiemann is the greatest value prospect, but at 7.5 I have overlooked Lambert too in jostling for big club coverage. When Lukaku feels my gw2 boot, Lambert will now be on my short list alongside the hopeful City stars and Bony.

      Thanks!

I feel it boils down to our individual needs to be honest, right?

I've got Rodriguez because that extra cash helps me upgrade my 4th mid to the likes of Silva or Coutinho.

Too often we get stuck looking at players in a vacuum like this, when we really need to assess each of our teams as a whole.

I agree Lambert is the superior choice however, in & around the 6mil mark I feel we'd be hard pressed to find a better option than Rodriguez.

worst case scenario is a couple of transfers needed and best case is a shed load of points, not gonna mess up either way. Benteke FTW.

If you want 100 percent nailed on players there is only cech cole and hazard
If you want to spread your risk then first option
Third option seems way too much from such high rotation potential plus it's mouriniu - there is always a chance for 0-0 or 1-0 from a late Torres/ramires goal and then what?

Nope........he is likely to rotate with Negredo for the first off the bench role! Pele plays one up front and that will be Aguero. And I don't care what one sound bite of preseason interview bigging up squad players anyone gives me 🙂

    Mignolet Davis

    Soldado Dzeko Anelka

should I dgrade Zaha and upgrade Anelka to anyone else? Or upgrade Dzeko to Negrado?

With clean sheets so difficult to predict at the start of the season, what about doubling up on Baines and Coleman who are two of the most likely defense candidates for attacking returns? I'd then get in big club defenders over Christmas.

I'm thinking by getting Baines I can free up a lot of funds with just 1 FT if I need to, say, get RvP in an emergency.

Why don't fpl put the player's kit on their away one when a player plays away? Always a factor in selection for me, and I'm sure it would be good advertising for the clubs?!

Interesting points. Honestly though I think there's better options at his price even if he does play a fair bit. He'd have to absolutely explode to be worth it, when there's already DGW striker punts to be had GW1.

He's definitely someone I'd consider getting in for Lukaku GW2, but starting with both just seems to be asking for trouble come GW3. On a one GW basis I'd fancy several players to match Dzeko week 1 if they're fit and all start, especially Sturridge and Carroll.
