As we announced late last week, we’ll be supporting www.playon.co.uk as our weekly Fantasy Football pursuit this season. Having dabbled with the game at the end of the previous campaign, we’ve picked up one or two pointers along the way that have, to our surprise, brought us a fair share of the prize pots.

With our £2 multiplayer game now open and offering a guaranteed £500 pot for Gameweek 1, we thought we’d share some of that wisdom and encourage you to try out what we think is an excellent addition to the Fantasy Football world.

Find the Untouchables
A PlayON lineup needs 11 starters who are more than likely to play for 90 minutes. With 5 points available for every minute played, there are 450 points available for finding reliable starters who can see it through to the final whistle. Sometimes you can compensate for an absentee and a few goals can carry a 10-man team but as a rule, be sure to focus on the players that will ensure you get a full starting XI out on the pitch.

Hunt out the Bargains
This is without doubt the key to success. PlayON’s pricing algorithm does its thing in advance of every Gameweek, basing player prices on performances over the prior number of gameweeks. Very often, this can create a select band of players who, for one reason or another, are clearly underpriced and offer value.

In particular, look out for those returning from injury or suspension – they will often have taken a price dip having missed several matches.

Play the Stats
This game is one of the few that recognises defensive work and rewards players who put in a shift. Actions like clearances, interceptions and tackles play their part and you should take the scoring matrix into account when making your team selections. Finding a cheap midfielder who can earn defensive points or, more importantly, a budget defender who can hoover up clearances, can be the key to freeing up funds for investment elsewhere.

The canny PlayON manager will also assess the fixtures with these stats in mind. A centre-back facing West Ham is more than likely to face a lot of crosses and aerial balls – it stands to reason that he’ll earn more clearances as a result.

Shameless plug but, if you’re an FFS member, you do, of course, have access to all the stats used in PlayON with the ability to filter by Gameweek and Gameweek range and a compare tool to run head-to-head player comparisons. We’re also planning to add specific PlayON tables very soon.

Dare to be Different
You can sometimes kid yourself that you’ve put together a strong lineup when, in reality, others will be going into the Gameweek with very similar players. A differential or two is always handy and taking one or two calculated risks can give you the edge when it comes to the shake-up for the cash prizes.

Watch for Late Injuries
Harking back to our first point, that late nugget of team news can be all-important when it comes to finding bargains. If a regular starter is crocked, this could open the way for a undervalued second string player to come in – while this is a big gamble when dealing with attacking players, it’s often handy at the back with defenders earning points for clearances and interceptions.

Read our Player Picks
Every Friday we’ll bring you three player picks – one for each position, that will help provide the foundations of your PlayON lineup. Just three, mind – we want to maintain our chances of winning some of that prize money too.

Tomorrow we’ll be taking a look at PlayON’s more advanced features and we’ll also be giving you an exclusive look at the brand new PlayON site that’s on its way soon.

Our first player picks article due on Friday, ahead of the opening Gameweek.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Well, "most nailed on after kun" is speculation.... I am actually thinking about him, but when there are nailed on players like Sturridge, Giroud, Soldado, Benteke, plus Lukaku who's not nailed on but has a double, I can see why he's not that popular. And that's before you even think about RVP.

Well just Martinez in general! Even if you think he is a better manager than Moyes then you have to recognise that he is going to make changes and have new ideas which in a defense that has been so set can only be determental for the first season at least I believe.

Time for my first RMT. Think I am happy but would appreciate some feedback. I've tried to explain the strategy as well...

    Mignolet / Jones

    Ivanovic / Mertesacker / Coleman / Turner / Shaw

    Hazard / Walcott / Silva / Nolan / Koren

    Lukaku / Lambert / Aspas

1.5mil cash in the bank... thought being upgrade Lukaku to a 9.5mil striker, possibly Soldado

GK's mean I can leave them be, got a keeper for the whole season, no changes needed
First 3 defenders will play most weeks but Turner and Shaw rotate well to offer a good alternative/cover
First 3 mids will play with Nolan or Koren, again rotate well. I like Nolan but find his returns are very home weighted so hoping Koren can offer a good alternative when Nolan is away
Front 3... Lukaku is a one week gamble and can't look beyond Lambert for value. Aspas worries me as another gamble (espeically with news of Sturridge and Suarez) but I should have money from Ivan sale to upgrade in a few weeks - Berbatov is on my radar

    Any thoughts?

I had him as a filler to get 5 good mids and with 2 decent strikers. After poor openers I think he could be the best of the 6.0 and under strikers, but for that price it mightn't be great. Got him out for Kim in midfield and 3 good strikers.

    Think I am set....

An "RVPless" team with a definite plan on bringing him in for GW2.

    Mignolet/Lewis
    Cole/Turner/Collins(or 4.5)/Brayford/Parr
    Haz/Oscar/Walcott/Mirallas/Kim
    Benteke/Sturridge/Jrod

    Bank 3.0

My plan is to always be just a 4pt hit away from getting RVP at all times. The need to own RVP for GW1 is diminished because there is an obvious (C) choice is Hazard or other (CHE) player. Also owning Benteke with 2 games instead of RVP is not the most terrible punt. (you are almost guaranteed 2 additional pts for the DGW).

    My Plan,

If RVP lights it up in SWA and his price is rising....
    Oscar>Snod/Adam/Sissoko.....6.5 mid or less
Benteke>RVP immediately following to Untied match to catch his price rise.

    If RVP blanks vs SWA and price is falling;

Either wait until weekend of GW2 to transact the above OR wait until for another week to get him and transfer.
    Benteke>(GW2 Bangwagon Negredo/Dzeko/Bony etc....)

    Make sense?

I don't like the idea of planning a hit, RVP isn't that explosive that you can't go without for a week.

disagree....a 4pt hit is a small price to pay for having 4 studs in a dgw

I dont know. Seems pointless to 3m in the bank. Might as well get him from the start. Because this way you dont have an incredible team that his absence affords you, nor do you have him

Well Doosra, the resident Hammers fan, seems to think Adrian will play instead.

Mignolet/4.0 or Foster/Boruc are by far the best keeper combos available to us imo.

Mirallas is quality though, so ideally you need to find cash for him.

IF and it is a huge IF, Adrian is starting, then Adrian and Boruc looks like a fantastic pair.

2 teams that will be strong defensively at home, with perfect H/A rotation for 9m.

If you can afford him, go Foster, more secure than Adrian.

i have Adrian, but not confident in it at this point.

    Evening all

I just renewed the league Another World - this is a league for people who support a team OUTSIDE the Premier League. Doesn't matter which country, if your main team is non-Premier League then you are very welcome. Even Leeds United fans 🙂

    A or B:

    MANNONE - BORUC
    Kosc – COLLINS - MURNER – Chester – Brayford
Walcott – Hazard – SNODGRASS – Mirallas –Kim
    RVP – Giroud – Lukaku

    MIGNOLET - DAVIS
    Kosc – ZABA – COLE - Chester – Brayford
    Walcott – Hazard – COUTINHO – Mirallas – Kim
    DZEKO - Giroud – Lukaku

So essentially, ignoring GKs: Collins, Murner, Snodgrass & RVP vs Zabaletta, Cole, Coutinho & Dzeko

A too weak at the back right?
