Two intriguing fixtures in the Premier League today, effecting both ends of the table. League leaders Manchester United reignite their great rivalry against a Liverpool side desperate to get into Europe, whilst Tottenham’s European ambitions stretch as high as the Champions League spots. They visit a Wolves side well capable of beating the top teams, but find themselves struggling in a relegation battle.

As always, the Dugout Discussion chatroom is open, and the first thing to digest is the team news from Anfield…

Liverpool XI: Reina, Johnson, Carragher, Skrtel, Aurelio, Gerrard, Lucas, Kuyt, Meireles, Maxi, Suarez.

Man United XI: Van der Sar, Rafael Da Silva, Smalling, Brown, Evra, Nani, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Berbatov, Rooney.

The headline team news for the hosts is that £35 million January signing, Andy Carroll, makes the substitutes bench for the first time in a Liverpool shirt. Kenny Dalglish opts for four defenders at the back, with Luis Suarez leading the line up front.

The visitors reinstate the Premier League’s top scorer to their starting eleven, with Javier Hernandez replacing the Bulgarian on the pine. Another once regular starter is back in the team after a couple of games on the touchline, as Rafael da Silva gets the nod ahead of John O’Shea.

The Dugout Discussion will stay open right up until the hotly anticipated bonus points are distributed.

Can't be bothered monitoring everyone's progress for the next two weeks. Happy with Arteta, and I've got money in the bank if I ever need Nani back.

And a "cut leg"??? That injury is at least a month out, if not more.

Although the picture is grim it might just be stitches and he could play, Utd cannot afford to be without their best player.

Guys, that's internal AND external stitches.

Happy to be proved wrong, but I would be stunned if he's playing within three weeks. Played enough rugby to have seen a lot of injuries like that, and you didn't see the guy with them for a long time afterwards.

As I've already said I thought rooney should have been banned for the elbow.

However, it will be an absolute disgrace if/when Carragher gets off for that tackle on Nani.

There was no other thought in his mind except injuring or seriously hurting Nani.

He's also an extremely average defender! 😉

The timing and height of it made it fairly clear. Just like with Keane's tackle on Haland, you could see that he wasn't seriously going for the ball.

Granted, it clearly wasn't as pre-meditated as Keane's, but the intent was still there.

I know that if I'd done that it would have been no mistake.

"The timing and height of it made it fairly clear"

I don't see the logic in this comment. The height and timing of a challnge does not necessarily mean that he intended to do it. We frequently see challenges made that are badly timed due to the other players skill for example.

"Granted, it clearly wasn’t as pre-meditated as Keane’s, but the intent was still there"

I'm a City fan. The two are by no means similar other than your presumption that Carragher meant to do the same thing and break Nani's leg and end his career.

"I know that if I’d done that it would have been no mistake."

I hope you're not in the situation where you do do it and didn't mean to. It's a horrible feeling.

Obviously I've never done that- I'd be sick if I had!

My basic point is that there was some intent to cause harm by Carragher in that tackle.

As I said "Granted, it clearly wasn’t as pre-meditated as Keane’s"- BUT, the fact that he made no effort whatsoever to pull out of it makes me feel that there had to be something behind it. Whether he just wanted to "rough nani up" or seriously injure him is a moot point.

The key thing is the INTENT was there imho.

Interesting to see what they make of it on MOTD.

I have - and I genuinely meant to take the ball. That's the point. But people will run over, call you every name under the sun and question your sporting integrity.

Carragher is a scallywag, but not the devil.

This isn't a liverpool thing- I just genuinely believe that for the sake of football those sort of tackles should be dealt with harshly.

The ref / lino should have been able to see from the height of cafrra's tackle / nani's cut that it was a red.

AGAIN - its a refereeing mistake / bottling it

I agree! It was a red card offence, but pointing fingers and trying to guess what Carragher intention was is not constructive.

So Rafael should get suspended as well.

The difference is that the referee actually saw both incidents and punished both of them with yellow cards.

He saw Rooney's as well though......

I agree that they should look at Rafael's as well- though at least Rafael was clearly going for the ball.

Rafael is simply a shite tackler. Him and Scholes work on it together every day.

He gave a foul for it- hence action was taken and the referee was presumed to have seen it.

sepp blatter has said that the fa could still have banned him even though a foul was given

This weekends accum, over 2.5 goals in Uniteds game, over 2.5 goals in the Spurs game, Everton to win, Fulham to win and City -1 goal. God I hate Mancini and his Italian defensive style of play!!!!
