Manchester United have confirmed Nani’s injury following the winger’s withdrawal in the 3-1 loss at the hands of Liverpool today, reporting that the midfielder suffered β€œa very deep gash” in his leg.

A wild challenge by Jamie Carragher just before half time saw Nani eventually stretchered from the Anfield proceedings and the player will be assessed tomorrow morning at the club’s training ground. A time on the sidelines would see the player transferred out in significant numbers- not only is he the top-scoring Fantasy Premier League player this season, he is far and away the top-owned, with an incredible 48% of all Fantasy Managers having him in their sides. Until any further information is forthcoming, however, perhaps it’s best to hold fire before considering the repercussions.

Nani’s peculiar behaviour – pursuing referee Phil Dowd before tearfully crumbling to the turf following the brutal Carragher lunge- initially left many perplexed and questioning the severity of the injury. Subsequent reports of a media blackout and suspect photographs left the incident feeling more like the making of a Film Noire than the outcome of a football match.

The Red Devils supposedly issued a media embargo, allegedly in reaction to the loss, and screenshots of the wound are flying around the Twittersphere (with one certainly more questionable than the other) as we speak.

The club’s next league match is due to take place on Saturday 19th March at home to Bolton, though as Andy has recently pointed out, if next weekend’s FA Cup tie with Arsenal ends in a draw, the replay would take precedent over the Bolton game, meaning United would have a blank gameweek 30. Given that their gameweek 31 match is not due to take place until Saturday 2nd April, Nani may not miss any league time at all.

Hopefully the club will be more forthcoming tomorrow and you can be sure we’ll post any more information if and when it appears.

johnfinlay John swears he'll deliver unbiased Fantasy Premier League tips and news...until Leeds get promoted.

I'd love it if every club followed the Man U example and didn't do interviews.

Interviews are dull as anything. And when there are certain players who are honest and speak their mind (the likes of Savage) they get slated.

        Nope.

Interesting from the 'secret ref' on twitter:

"Carragher challenge should be Red, Rafael a correct Yellow but Maxi foot up worse than the tackle. Maxi tackle a red as no clear attempt to win ball and far too high, malicious in nature. No contact saves Rafael."

The Bollox was that they both should have been sent off.. Both feet off the ground with intent is a red card offence... Contact doesn't have to be made to make it a red..

Not sure about that. That means that you can tackle how you want as long as the other guy can jump high? Carragher and Rafael deserved the same- I think both red, but if the ref says both yellow then that's consistent.

That's a different discussion though, that the passage of play would be different following one decision or the other. You may be right...but I'm disagreeing with the Secret Ref (probably some under 13s ref) that the challenges are different in nature. Can't see that.

I've explained why I disagree with him, you've just pasted a link. You are quite practised at copy and pasting though, I'll concede that.

Anyway, I'll dumb down my point a little. Just because he's set up a twitter account called The Secret Ref it doesn't mean he is a ref. We all know the rules and as he's saying that 2 Liverpool players should have got sent off to 0 Man U players, I suspect he's not coming from a neutral place.

I know exactly what you are saying, hence your stupid under 13s level comment. If you looked a little harder though, rather than just bleat the usual cack, you'd see that he thought the decisions at Chelsea should have gone against Utd. Hence, probably neutral.

No contact? He lifted his feet during the challenge then kicked out. If someone through a punch and missed he still through a punch.

          For me:

          Carra -Red
          Nani -Red, man handled ref
          Maxi - Yellow
          Rafael - Red
VDS - 2 yellows, chasing around the pitch to get in officials faces

If Suarez had been a little cheaper, I'd have got him this weekend. Went for Carroll instead- a bit early on for his comeback maybe, but I'll keep him for the season now. Still, Suarez set up all 3 goals- surely that bodes well for the future when Carroll is playing.

        Kuyt Meireles Suarez

I wouldn't go that far, he has had some very good games but it just shows how shite we were at the beginning of the season, he's still had some shockers and really isn't a great tackler IMO.

Honestly I think he is excellent now. The start of his career wasnt great and especially the way Gerrard treated him made him a comedy piece

He has been immeasurably better than Gerrard or any other Liverpool player this season.

In fact i think Lucas has the record for the most tackles or possessions won in the enitire Division this year. If anything its Gerrard who is under pressure given current form.

I have spent a lot of time telling people who haven't seen him much how much he's improved but I'm gonna need u to back up that stat because that sounds crazy, if it's true I'll take your word for it. Again though, until recently it wasn't hard to be our best player considering how poor some of our best players were performing.

"17 - Lucas Leiva has made a tackle every 17 minutes and 36 seconds in the PL this season; a quicker rate than any other player. Vital."

Don't think the one about the interceptions is correct, but maybe that wasn't was Dbr was looking for.

On succesful ones he's averaging one each 27 minutes, only slightly behind the leader Scott Parker who is on 28, and roughly the same as Holden and Vaughn who are the other in the top4

Hardly Lucas is a joke to the majority of fans and pundits.

The fact that he stayed there and put up with Carragher but especially Gerrards hypocrisy of his performances speaks volumes for the lad.

I wouldnt be surprised to see him centre midfield lifting the world cup with Brazil in 3 years.

Not much of that, we were pretty poor. Barton is very influential for us we really missed him as a playmaker.

Some talk that he is refusing to play until the contract thing is sorted, but I think that is probably bullshit. Pardew seems an honest speaker and he strongly denied it. Plus Barton knows how good the club and fans have been to him, he may have his problems but I doubt he is THAT stupid.

Nani---So if this is the two inch gash (generous) with a long blood trail, that looks like a one week injury with stitches at the most. It'll need a bandage and some heavier shin protection, but I don't see this as "no start" on 19 Mar (GW30). Not a doctor, but as they say here, "I stayed at a Holiday Express last night".

Yeah, I had the same feeling as you, .... that's the photoshopped one (just a remark from several sites), looks like a meat cleaver- the tear is a chunk-.......

but comparing the "raking" kind of impact we actually saw from Carragher and the blood trail in the one I posted, I'm not too sure about it's authenticity- plus kind of weird that the medic would let it air out while taking a photo, it would be bandaged ASAP.. blood loss.

Sorry guys, "stayed at a Holiday Inn last night" is the punch line in a long-running TV commercial in the US, where some untrained person performs brain surgery or some expert task and claims he can do it because he stayed at a Holiday Inn last night.

In my use, it meant I am not a medical expert on assessing the GASH of NANI.

Nah, it was the commentary on the one-two between Bro and Dah for the goal that done England! Sounded like the Dolly song! Dahlin was also a poor signing for Blackburn and that says something! πŸ˜€

Dahlin was always junk, except for in THAT world cup run in 1994. Bit of a cheat, didn't bring anything more than goals really.

Can't remember, something like £2,500 a time maybe. The PL started fining him this season, so he got away with it for years.

I don't see why he should have to talk to anyone if he doesn't want to, but it is a bit silly, really.

They should just scrap the post game interviews, the coach/player has had no time to analyze the game by then anyway so there is nothing good to come from it.

In Germany both coaches do a press conference TOGETHER after the game, now that would be truly hilarious.

Imagine how good that could be, Hughes and Mancini sitting next to eachother answering questions about the game they just played.

".. worried about Nani - one of United's best players of the season so far - there was some encouraging news in that his fellow winger Antonio VALENCIA (caps added) was part of the Reds' travelling party for the Liverpool game.

The Ecuadorian was not named among the seven substitutes by Sir Alex Ferguson but his presence at Anfield, combined with his recent return to full-contact training, suggests a comeback may be close."

Problem with Nani's crossing is that the strikers don't know when he's going to cross it, when he's going to cut inside, when he's going to dribble.

With Valencia Rooney can make the run knowing that the cross will come in.
