Cardiff upset the odds and battle back to grab the points at City’s expense in their first home match in the Premier League. Andre Villas-Boas shifts to 4-3-3 for the visit of Swansea, while Michael Laudrup tinkers with his forward options once again:

The Game Changer

An emphatic 4-0 win at home to Newcastle on Monday evening saw Fantasy managers loading up on City’s attacking assets ahead of a trip to Cardiff. Plenty anticipated a walkover in light of the Magpies mauling – almost 65,000 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) snapped up Sergio Aguero while over 76,000 opted for Edin Dzeko ahead of this afternoon’s showdown in Wales.

Compared to the visitors’ front two, Fraizer Campbell was no more than an afterthought but the former United frontman showed his top-flight credentials by bagging a brace and assist to send Pellegrini’s side back to Manchester with their tails between their legs. Andreas’ Cornelius’ return to fitness saw the big Dane warm the bench and although he’ll be pushing for a start, it’s Campbell who remains in the driving seat for the lone striker role, with his cut-price appeal (5.5 in FPL) bound to get the bandwagon rolling over the next few days.

The Underused

A shoulder injury whilst on international duty over the summer kept Aron Gunnarsson far from Fantasy radars as the season approached.

Those looking for a route into Malky Mackay’s midfield had mainly focussed on Kim Bo-Kyung, after the Korean notched three times over the summer but, having recovered in time for the Bluebirds’ final pre-season friendly, Gunnarsson looks a vital component of the Cardiff central midfield three.

Sitting alongside Kim and new boy Gary Medel, the Icelandic international opened his account for the season to serve Fantasy managers a reminder of the attacking threat which produced eight goals and six assists in the Championship last time out. Craig Bellamy, Kim and set-piece taker Peter Whittingham have proven far more popular picks but with a mere 0.3% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the 5.0 priced Gunnarsson could be another differential contender worthy of our consideration.

The Selection Poser

While the starting XIs at the Cardiff City Stadium were pretty much as anticipated, Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to replace Edin Dzeko with Alvaro Negredo midway through the second-half will have the Bosnian’s owners on edge ahead of the weekend home clash against Hull. Dzeko’s superb opener maintained his recent form but it was perhaps telling that Sergio Aguero was retained for the full 90 minutes against the Bluebirds; Negredo’s late goal will also give his manager food for thought as City look to recover from today’s unexpected stumble.

Andre Villas-Boas and Michael Laudrup gave Fantasy managers plenty to mull over at the Lane. The Spurs boss shifted to a 4-3-3 formation and demoted Gylfi Sigurdsson to the subs bench after just one game, with Etienne Capoue joining Mousa Dembele and Paulinho in the centre of the park. Villas-Boas’ spending over the next few days will likely hint at his preferred formation over the season ahead but for Sigurdsson, the signs are already looking ominous. While Andros Townsend staked a claim for inclusion with another strong display on the right, he, too, will be bracing himself for increased competition over the next few days, with two or three new faces anticipated.

Swansea’s Europa League duties continue to affect Laudrup’s selection policy up top. Wilfried Bony was once again named on the bench, with Michu preferred as the lone striker and Jonjo Shelvey tucking in behind – the Ivorian could be set for a Fantasy exodus if this continues for much longer.

I've been looking at FISO and TotalFPL Price changes but I wanted to clear up something I'm not entirely sure I understand: I'm seeing Lukaku (currently priced 7.8) with 119% progress at the top of the chart yet the change today is down 26%. Does this mean he will be dropping down again tonight to 7.7?!

Why can't people just wait to see if he plays and how he does first! So frustrating seeing my funds bleed whilst I wait to give him his last chance.

    Thanks Gents

Kompany > Collins leaves me 7.8 to replave Anelka. Other strikers are RVP and Dzeko. Looking at the list no one really catches my eye. I contemplate getting Campbell for his fixtures and make some money off the wagon. Other targets could be Fulham's Berbatov and Bent. I figure Berba is most nailed on either playing in the hole behind Bent or up top himself.

Other strikers for 7.8 and below?

I'll probably keep him for the same reasons. I also have Lukaku still who was a bit of a punt from the start and I have always planned to keep just the one from DGW1. Unless Lukaku starts and does very well tomorrow he'll be up for the chop and Haz will remain. I think there's lots more to come from the man.

My gut has always told me Negredo will be the dogs onions in terms of points when the dust has settled and I still feel that. He's gotta start next game surely. Almost as sure Luk will start tomoz.

I think so. But Dzeck scoring that class goal as it was creeping towards his substitution clouds the waters a little. But Luk surely will start tomoz and maybe hurt a few peeps here.

And I thought Levy was good...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vlad_Chiriche%C8%99

In 2012 ChiricheΘ™ sealed another transfer, this time from Pandurii to Steaua BucureΘ™ti for a reported sum of €700.000 and 25% extra to Pandurii in case of a future transfer profit

On 6 August 2013, Steaua paid another €500.000 for the 25% clause

25th August 2013. Steaua sell Chiriches to Spurs for £8.5M, avoiding paying Pandurii ~2M by buying out the caluse for 500k 4 weeks before hand.

    Bravo.

Solid, in control, should have scored more and never really looked like conceeding, Townsend MoM - Lennon may not automatically get back in, still not totally sold on Chadli. Soldado did his bit well enough. If we do score next weekend, and I'd bet money that we do, he'll no doubt be involved.

As Steve mentioned below (and in my OP) we're on the verge of announcing the signing of our new CB. It really means you cannot bank of Dawson. Vertongen will always be first choice ahead of him and then he's got to compete with Kaboul and Chiriches. Club captain or not he could very well end up doing all his captaining in the europa league and cup games next to Chiriches while Kaboul and Vertongen start every week in the prem.

The cheapest guaranteed starter you're getting in the Spurs back four (who isn't classed as a midfielder, thanks FPL!) is going to be Walker or Lloris.

going off what info you provided you could (in no particular order) a) get rid of Mirallas and Downing for Michu and risk another 4.5 midfielder maybe rotating with lucas. b) Lose Lamps and downing = Mich and a 5mil midfielder
      c) Lose lamps and mirallas and get michu and a 6.5er
      d) silva > michu

At the outset of the season I needed to choose a budget (£6.0m or below) striker and a £4.5m goalkeeper to sit on the bench until GW3, at which point they would be required to fill some holes in my team left by outgoing/benched DGW participants Petr Cech, Christian Benteke, and Ramires. I ended up going with Andreas Cornelius and David Marshall of Cardiff City. I liked their fixtures in weeks 3 and 4, and although I would have preferred Boruc in goal, at the time I was concerned he wasn't quite nailed on and may end up leaving me with a falling price to deal with at an inopportune moment.

Now I have an entirely different set of problems, and only £0.5 in the bank to sort them out.

I'd like to rid myself of Cech to free up funds, and in his case I'm a bit concerned about a possible price drop. More importantly, I need to replace Cornelius. After Frazier Campbell's performance today I don't see any chance of the Dane starting against Everton, and I need a second forward who will actually be on the pitch next weekend.

With that in mind, which of these options would you recommend?:

    A) Start Marshall in goal, replace Cornelius with £6m max (Campbell, Maiga, Chamakh, Gayle), play 4-4-2, no hit.

    B) Start Marshall in goal, replace Ramires with £7m max (Giaccherini, Jarvis, Rosicky, Piennar, Giggs/Zaha), play 4-5-1, no hit.

    C) Cech>Boruc, start Boruc in goal, replace Cornelius with £8m max (Bony, Dzeko, Lambert, van Wolfswinkel), play 4-4-2, -4 hit.

    D) Cech>Boruc, start Boruc in goal, replace Ramires with £9m max (Michu, Coutinho, Yaya/Nasri/Navas), play 4-5-1, -4 hit.

    E) Cech>£4m, start Marshall in goal, replace Cornelius with Giroud, play 4-4-2, -4 hit.

    F) Cech>Boruc, start Boruc in goal, replace Cornelius and Ramires with a total of £14.5 (Sturridge+Jarvis/Rosicky, Negredo+Kim/Brady, Dzeko+Giaccherini, Bony+Snodgrass), option of formations, -8 hit for the second straight week πŸ™

The 4-5-1 options seem the most reasonable at this point… I didn't really expect that. If I end up going that route, GW3 I'll have an attacking 6 of:

    Walcott—Silva—Mirallas—Nolan—£9m/£7m
    –––––––––––––—Soldado—–––––––––––––

It's going to take me a while to reach conclusions that feel like anything but wild guesses, but thanks in advance for any input.

        -8 this week.

Part of this decision definitely hinges on the question "Is it worth another hit to avoid the risk that David Marshall gets torched by the Toffees?"

Personally the midfielders this season so far are a bit of a let down with value more in defence and forwards.

This will probably change over the season...and last season you needed a strong mf at the end i.e. Bale Michu Fella Walcott etc

But I'd spend larger on 2 or 3 strikers (Soldado / Aguero / Benteke / Sturridge etc) and have only 3 or 4 max big midfielders

So if you have a wildcard free...after GW 3

That's definitely something I'm considering, although the core of my team is fairly strong, and more or less matches your description:

        Cech—Marshall
        Zabaleta—Reid—Coleman—Toure—Ward
        Walcott—Silva—Mirallas—Nolan—Ramires
        Soldado—Benteke—Cornelius

Even if I were to wildcard today, I'm not sure there's that much I'd change. I suppose we'll see how I feel about it at the break.
