Scout Report – Mamadou Sakho

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers continued to strengthen his defence on Monday with the acquisition of Mamadou Sakho from Paris Saint-Germain. Having signed a long-term contract, the 23-year-old arrives for a reported £15m fee in what is a real statement of intent from the Merseyside outfit as they look to kick on from their 100% start to the season.

One of eight summer signings for the Reds, Sakho reckons that, despite the significant outlay for his services, he’ll have to battle to nail down a regular role:

“In a large club, having competition is something you expect. To get the best out of any player, you need to have competition. Competition doesn’t give me any worries. Competition makes the team grow and makes the club grow because that’s the objective and the goal of everyone here. I’ve been at Melwood for a day and it’s very good. The training areas are impressive and everything is in place for the players to keep in top condition. I’m delighted to be here. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome. I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

The History

A produce of the PSG youth academy, Sakho’s career at the Ligue 1 club kicked off back in 2007. Having made 12 appearances in his first season, the six foot two defender cemented a role as a first-team regular the following term and over the course of his six years in the French capital, played a total of 151 league games, scoring seven times and supplying a pair of assists.

Sakho – who can also fill in at left-back – was voted the Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year in 2010/11 and was a crucial part of the side that won the French title under Carlo Ancelotti in the season gone by. He has also represented his country at youth level a total of 11 times and has turned out for the French senior side on 14 occasions.

The Prospects

Despite Kolo Toure’s impressive couple of opening displays and Martin Skrtel’s resilient showing against United last weekend, it seems almost inevitable that both will fall behind Sakho in the pecking order. The Ivorian’s current groin problem has already cast doubts over his ability to remain injury-free and it may well be that Rodgers sees him as experienced back-up option for Sakho or Agger over domestic cup matches, while Skrtel now looks fourth-choice, having been benched for Toure over the pre-season programme.

In a telling interview with the club’s official website, Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre revealed the characteristics that persuaded Rodgers to pursue the 23-year-old:

“Sakho is a top, top centre-half and that adds to the great centre-back pairings that we have already and it will give that depth. He’s an important marquee signing for us. One of the things that Brendan said was that he wanted to add real depth and strength and Sakho is a Champions League player of great pedigree and experience. I think it’s difficult to imagine anyone filling Jamie Carragher’s shoes, but what the arrival will do is bring huge strength and experience to the squad. I think importantly, when you see him on the pitch, you see that he’s a leader and he’s very strong. The manager wanted to bring leaders and people who could dig in when needed. I think when our fans get to see Sakho in action, they’ll see he’s definitely got all of those characteristics.”

Strong in the air and on the ground, with a superb distribution rate, Sakho seems the ideal fit for Rodgers’ possession-based tactics. The only downside is both he and Agger are predominantly left-footed, making them less of a natural partnership than Toure and the Dane – nevertheless, for £15m the Frenchman hasn’t come to warm the bench ahead of a World Cup year. There’s also perhaps the possibility of an occasional switch to a three-man backline – a tactic Rodgers trialled on one or two occasions last term, with a 3-4-3 system also tested during a few of his final matches in charge at Swansea.

Coming in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), 6.6 in the Sky Sports game and 3.5 in the Sun Dream Team, Sakho looks bound to earn plenty owners before the domestic program resumes. With Agger, Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique all priced at 6.0 in FPL, the Frenchman is set to hand us a cheap route into the Reds’ back-four (albeit one that is still more costly than Toure’s 5.0), though Johnson’s current ankle complaint is one to monitor, with Andre Wisdom or Martin Kelly (both 4.4 in FPL) set to benefit if the right-back is ruled out for any length of time. The new Bonus Points System ruling also seems tailor-made for the likes of Sakho’s style of play, with his presence at the back likely to Liverpool’s chances of surpassing the 16 clean sheets harvested in Rodgers’ first season at the helm.

Ahead of an eye-catching run of fixtures (swa, SOT, sun, CPL, new, WBA ) investment in a defence that has already kept Christian Benteke and Robin Van Persie at bay in back-to-back matches looks a wise move, with many even tempted to double up, such has been the Reds’ resilience. With Rodgers’ side devoid of European duties this term, the focus is fully on nailing down a top four finish – a lack of rest and rotation could also benefit Liverpool’s main Fantasy assets and will likely bring Sakho onto the radar for wildcard-wielding Fantasy managers over the current international break.

After a disastrous start to this campaign (Overall rank 1.6m) this forthcoming week will be the 'turnaround' week for me.

    I'll hold my WC.

I've already done the 4 transfers mate. Will gain+keep around 0.5 in value and brought in some really in form players. Snoddy's fixtures are tough whilst Giroud + Sturridge seem much better than Aguero + Altidore imo. Mirallas might lose his place whilst Barfa now has Remy as well as just Cisse to assist. Did transfers before Monday so I do miss out on Mirallas teeing up Lukaku.......

Cheers for trying to help anyway mate.

if agger matches zabaleta for attacking threat and clean sheets, gets less cards than him, looks like getting more bps than him as a cb, and costs the same then then how come the argentine has a massive amount of owners compared to agger?

    is it

    A) agger has cheaper alternatives at the back, unlike man city (proceed to X)
    B) agger is underrated as an FPL asset
    C) zabaleta is overrated as an FPL asset
    D) a little bit of B and a little bit of C
    E) i feel safer backing the man city defence over liverpool's
    F) zabaleta had NEW,car,HULL,stk first 4 fixtures
    F) don't be silly zabaleta will beat agger this season
    G) i genuinely didn't know zabaleta's record total for assists in a season was 2, i now feel a bit fortunate especially as the first assist was not even a pass to the goalscorer. i'm actually a bit of a yaya toure owner now you mention it.(although his 2nd assist was delicious and arguably worth 2 in itself)
    H) you are sounding a bit bitter and should give up before you run out of alphabet

    X) this is fair enough, zabaleta however is not a cheaper alternative ot agger, if coverage is your thing how about nastasic and banking an extra 0.7?
    Y) y, why have i bothered with this post. i genuinely don't know.

Think that first word should be "since". We won't know "if" Zab matches Agger until the end of GW38, by which the question is moot.

Something has just occured to me

Verm, when he was playing was a massive goal threat for 2 reasons.

    1) His rampaging runs

    2) Perhaps more crucially RvP's set-pieces (see Evra's increased goal tally)

Cazorla is good, but they have never adequately replaced this threat. That was until yesterday. Arsenal defenders, particularly the one who plays for the same national side as 😯 are back on the radar

Fulham's fixtures look very strong, who's the best option in that backline? Riether? Hangeland?

Also eyeing up Lovren for Southampton.

Well talk is just talk. This board was also adamant that Lukaku was nailed-on for play 100+ minutes in the opening gameweek. This board was also certain that when Bassong came back that Whittaker would drop to the bench... I would take everything you read on here with a huge grain of salt.

Dawson's place is at risk from this Chiriches guy. Find another 0.5 and get Sakho - have you seen their fixtures? Mad not to have at least one Pool defender for that run.

I'd consider downgrading Zab to Sakho and use the extra for Dawson to Mert/Chiriches

City's fixtures aren't all that super for a while

Ah, very interesting... I like this idea, but the thought of not having Zab scares me.

How about this -- Dawson/Turner out and Hughes/Yanga in? Both have tasty fixtures over the next 4 weeks as well.

The big issue for me is longevity and just how meh Fulham and Newcastle are. They might do OK during these lovely fixture runs but then you'll have to get rid and you'll resent having to waste transfers on mediocre defenders.

But if you really can't live without Zab, go for it.

Do you reckon Sahko will be 100% nailed on? If I go for the following:

                Coleman / Vidic / Sahko

Who do you like for the remaining 2 spots? I would have 10.5 left to spend...

I think he will be within a gameweek or two. If fit, Toure may start against Swans but Sakho will quickly oust him (I have Toure - grrr).

Chester and Luiz would be my choice. But I accept that Luiz isn't everyone's cup of tea so Chester and Walker + £0.5m for sweets would be good.

    Do not discount Henderson!

Against stronger opposition Liverpool will start with three central midfielder just like the United game which means an attacker will have to be lost for him, he's quietly becoming a Liverpool fan favourite and was even voted MOTM on some Liverpool sites against United, Henderson will get gametime at someones expense! 😀

Ha, it's been noted that he gets game time in forward areas, and goals record ain't terrible. But I fundamentally think he's a very limited player and that new recruits have been brought in to address previous attacking weakness.

I wouldn't, but then I'm biased (Soldo bound to score a hat-trick vs NOR). But it's the type of trade that could really back-fire...

In similar boat, do I out Ricky for Tekkers/Giroud? It's very tempting but the pain I'll feel from a Ricky brace will be greater than the pleasure of points from this pair.

BUt no right/wrong, got to go with your own gut feeling here... you can still blame others if it goes tits-up, Forca always useful for that.

My current forward line-up of RVP, Giroud and Soldado is increasingly looking poor value when a front 3 of Tekkers, Giroud and Studge looks just as potent and far cheaper. If it wasn't for RVP and Soldado with home games against Palace and Norwich, respectively, I'd probably have wildcarded already. If after GW4, United and Spurs still look incapable of giving good service to RVP and Soldado, then Tekkers and Studge will almost certainly come in.

It's not RVP I've lost faith in. It's Moyes' current team that worries me that RVP will get isolated too much and will have less of the ball to make his obvious talents count. Plus a frustrated RVP equals more cards picked up.

Would it be stupid to take a hit to get rid of Aguero?

Not even sure, other strikers are Giroud and Sturridge. Can't afford RVP with one hit.. Benteke?

Benteke would be best option but it's probably not worth a hit. Do it next week. Aguero will probably score vs Stoke
