Having rinsed through our Goalkeeper and Defender Watchlist rankings, we now turn to midfield – an area of our Fantasy squads that has, so far, largely disappointed having been overshadowed by outstanding defensive returns and an array of prolific strikers. A certain Swansea asset points the way forward, however, offering the potential of continued returns in the coming weeks, backed by a Arsenal’s consistent Welshman and a pair of North London playmakers.

Michu’s run of three goals in three games, coupled with his rest and Swansea’s Capital One Cup exit, promotes the Spaniard to the very top of our midfield rankngs. Whether deployed as a central attacker, or playing off Wilfried Bony or Alvaro Vazquez, Michu continues to represent the Swans biggest threat and is producing the kind of under-the-hood statistics that saw him fetch 18 goals in his debut season. Following this weekend’s clash with Arsenal, the fixtures could hardly be kinder to Michu and the Swans, with a run of six favourable encounters that seem tailor made to boost his stock still further.

Aaron Ramsey remains difficult to ignore and, given the injury to Theo Walcott that has seen the winger tumble temporarily form the rankings, Ramsey looks to be the obvious replacement in light of his irresistible form. Despite his recent displays, there are concerns that we will see rest and rotation when Arsene Wenger’s injury list clears but, for now, Ramsey’s pitch time looks assured in a team that is flowing with creativity and confidence. The weekend trip to the Liberty will put both to the test with the former Cardiff City man no doubt eager to impress.

Team-mate Mesut Ozil is another candidate to fill the hole left by Walcott’s injury. The German playmaker has adjusted seamlessly to life at the Emirates, helping himself to four assists in two starts to underline his Fantasy potential. The rising price tag is an obstacle, as is the appeal of Olivier Giroud and the continued form of the mid-price Ramsey. Even so, Ozil is a tempting proposition and he sits within our midfield top five as the Gunners look to test their outstanding away form at Swansea, West Brom and Palace over the next four Gameweeks.

Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen is sandwiched between the Gunners assets, providing a suitable route into Andre Villas-Boas’ outfit. While Paulinho and Erik Lamela offer alternatives below and above Eriksen in the price brackets, the Dane offers a middle ground with the potential for goals and assists playing up in support of Tottenham’s lone striker. With Roberto Soldado seemingly struggling to convince Fantasy managers, Eriksen looks to be the current weapon of choice, although Paulinho is certainly a very viable alternative for those looking for coverage of Tottenham’s form and fixtures.

Hatem Ben Arfa completes our top five although his position is severely under threat from the likes of Kevin Mirallas and budget pick Robbie Brady. Ben Arfa blanked in the 3-2 home defeat to Hull and will need to convince over the next two away trips in order to maintain his stock following two outstanding displys against Fulham and Villa. The weekend trip to Everton looks tough for the Frenchman and he’ll come up against Mirallas, a player who has so far disappointed in Fantasy terms. The Belgian now appears to be under severe pressure from Barcelona loanee Gerard Deulofeu, who bewildered Fulham in the Capital One Cup in midweek. Deulofeu’s time will come and Mirallas must now feel pressure to produce but, having linked well with compatriot Romelu Lukaku for the winning goal at Upton Park last time out, we’re backing Mirallas to produce and hold off the challenge from the young Spaniard – for now.

Brady’s goal and assist returns in the Tigers’ win at Newcastle confirmed his potential as a budget asset and has seen him enjoy another price rise this week. With Robert Koren sidelined through injury, Brady’s role at set-plays has been promoted further and with spot-kicks also a factor, he looks an extremely favourable short-term starter for Hull’s back-to-back home encounters with West Ham and Villa.

Liverpool’s Victor Moses is looming and threatening a rise up the rankings once we’ve seen how the return of Luis Suarez impacts his role and potential, while United’s Antonio Valencia is also present, as a means of covering United’s superb run of Old Trafford fixtures over the next three. While the acquisition or Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie will always be more desirable, Valencia appears to have cemented his starting role and will always be a factor should David Moyes’ side click into attacking form over the next month.

Lower down the rankings, Stoke City’s Marko Arnautovic and West Ham’s Ravel Morrison offer punts in the low-to-mid price bracket. Morrison is a rock bottom option as a bench midfielder with promise but, having netted in his last two outings, he looks set for a continued run of opportunities while both Stewart Downing and Joe Cole remained sidelined. Arnautovic is perhaps a stronger long-term option. The Austrian appears to be pivotal to Mark Hughes’ attacking plans and could eventually be deployed in a central attacking role. Right now he’s exerting his influence from the flank and has earned two assists in his two starts in all competitions. With fixtures in his favour, Arnautovic looks an intriguing differential for those looking to take a risk and free up funds with their Walcott replacement.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

townsend 5.5m and played in last 4 games - over 80 mins in 3 of those. It was a serious answer.

5.5m for a spurs mid who takes many shots at goal better than having a cheapie for a rubbish team

I liked this little snippet from StatsBomb:

Aside: Townsend is terrible at choosing where and when to shoot the ball. He has 22 shots already this season and zero goals, and that’s not really a fluke. He has been a stone cold killer of attacks so far this year, and someone needs to sit him down and coach him out of it, fast. “Repeat after me, Andros: You are not Gareth Bale.”

He was poor against Hull last weekend but I expect him to hit back. I also think we may be useful away from home this season with the team and system we're playing.. a lot more space for Ben Arfa when playing away from home, on the break.

    Falling stars

Getting into my stride now...Another look at those Crocs and random fallers who are currently costing less their opening GW values arranged into a squad whose total is at or less than the original 100 mill budget and an antidote to the knee jerk frenzy of the previous weekend...some for the watchlist and some for immediate start

It's Thursday..it's quiet...and a time for those with a steady nerve to ponder their next move. Sadly i suspect those fpl players will be in the minority this week due to the seemingly endless injuries to some of our more favoured picks over the weekend. With plenty of accompanying knee jerk transfers to redeem the situation, and avoid a loss in TV, -8's and -12's have been a common theme this GW..., Early signs suggest the capitol one cup has been a little kinder towards FPL than the previous gameweek...Thankfully..!

Once again most transfers concentrated on the need for speed as some of the perceived hottest replacement picks drifted relentlessly upwards by 0.1’s as our hard earned injured fantasy picks took a tumble southwards..but what of the unfancied languishing on the fallers page…or those in the bargain bucket..

And the good news...success for last weeks crop of unfashionable players and fallers with points a plenty...of those that played..

    Cech....6pts Kompany..2pts Williams...9pts Clyne....7pts Michu...11pts Sessegnon...8pts Mirallas....5pts Moses...2pts Remy...17pts BOOM !!.... 67 pts pre (c) choice.…

And so to this weeks crop of cheapo's and budget dodging flared trouser wearing unfashionables. Gone for fewer crocs this week as the coming GW's will provide rich pickings in that dept..(arrows indicate current direction of sales travel)

    Cech (6.4 v)....xxxx (4.0)

    Kompany (6.3 ^) Koscielny (5.4 v) Williams (4.9 v)(b1) Clyne (4.4 ^) Rosenior (3.9 ^)(b3)

    Hazard (9.2 v) Fellaini (8.4 v) Lamela (8.8 v) Wilshire (6.3 v)(b2) Moses (6.3 ^)

    Suarez (10.9 ^)(c) Remy (7.4 ^) Lukaku (7.4 ^)

    100 mill….(0.0) in the bank…Saving a whopping 2.5 mill on opening values..

All prices correct as of 26/09

Goalkeeper…No need for change here. Gone once again for Cech with a no mark…A victim of Chelsea’s early DGW his 0.1 fall offers one of the genuine safe routes into any CL rotated squads..With a quarter of the owners of Mignolet he’s a genuine differential made affordable with strict budget control.

Defenders….Once again few changes here….Kompany has failed to convince the masses of his potential despite an outstanding performance against Man Utd which went rewarded with a measily 2 pts. .surely a BAP magnet in the weeks to come…Koscielny remains at 5.4 after his earlier sending off and despite great fixtures has failed to reignite early season interest… William’s has a tricky GW coming up against Arsenal but then embarks on the long awaited easy run for the Swans, with a clean sheet and max BAPS last weekend to wet the appetite he may prove to be a steal …The close season offered plenty of debate between the merits of Clyne/Shaw which has proved well founded give current results. With little to pick between them the injury merry go round has left Clyne at a full 0.3 cheaper than his opposite number. Rosenior offers the cheapest of the cheap bench warming opportunities at 3.9. However with back to back good fixtures and a job done on HBA last weekend he may well be more than that.

Midfield…Four changes here..Hazard’s FPL failings and a massive early season ownership have combined to reduce his price to 9.2 and falling, simply one of the best opportunities you will get this season (witness Monitor article)... Fellaini…overpriced from day one due to his role in the hole last season ..but nonetheless a CDM brought in by United to score goals from set pieces, I’ve no idea what the masses thought they were buying last week but that’s what he is.. With 300,000 owners a blank this weekend could bring him down close to a more realistic 8.0/8.2 price tag..Lamela…surely this weekend is his time to shine..With less than 45 minutes in the last three GW’s it’s time for AVB to turn Spurs attacking potential into goals.. He may be the key. A mass of injuries has given the opportunity for Wilshire to travel around the Arsenal midfield, where he pops up this weekend is anybody’s guess, could be anything from CDM to in the hole and anything in between…punty…Moses , With only the league to play for between now and January Liverpool have the luxury of limited need for rotation and with Moses slotting in nicely he becomes a tidy pick at 6.3.

Forwards….Suarez turns from watch list to player this week and affords the last chance to snap him up for less than the opening GW value, his stunning return last night, despite failing to score, shows he may well still be trying on the golden boot next May. A brace from Loic Remy last weekend proved a good pick and with Newcastle adopting the “we’ll score one more goal than you” approach he remains so. Lukaku…gonna be in this squad for some time to come…Just buy him…!!!

This week offers the final chance to bag a bargain for many of the players in my squad as their boat sails for the total madness that is Totalfpl but with plenty of injuries, bans and dips in form to come in the next few weeks there’s always a bargain to be had and a little bit of therapy to be found on the fallers page.

Hope you liked my picks for this week and keep watching the fallers.

Good work Wakey. Lamela is winking at me, big time. Remy a little too, but so many premium options up top I'm not sure I'll fit him in.

One thing though, don't think he got 17 points last week, you may be over-selling him a little 😉

Great stuff Wakey.... I'll try and Hot Topic these each week. Such a great antidote to the jerky kneemanship of many other posts. If I miss HTing any in the coming weeks could you do me a favour and email me a link to the post. jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

Yeah...will do Jonty..Just working on the format each week until i get it right...It's coming along slowly and is indeed a good anti dote to the knee jerk..Not that it stops me of course.

          Three parts looks good.
          1. Catch up on last week's picks
          2. This week's picks
          3. Bit of analysis broken down by position...make sure you use more paragraphs though within these. Reads better with just one to two sentences per paragraph.

I'm keen to cover these in the community round up each week so people can see how these fallen stars have fared and your picks ahead of the next gameweek.

Suarez indeed looks like a standout fallen star this week.

Yeah.i'm not the greatest with the old English grammar...I'm also aware of not making the post too long...TBH Jonty it seems like such a good idea that i've stumbled on and goes down so well that i'll just keep refining it until it reads well...any more advice greatly received..

Thanks for advice earlier. I think I'm following the crowd this week and taking a hit for Rooney and Michu. Chester can rot on the bench. But who'll be with him? Barkley, Moses, Ivan, Walker, Kim (need 2)?

Reasonably happy with the team for this GW:

    Chesney
    Vidic,, Zab, Toure
    Oscar, Michu, Eriksen, Mirallas
    Soldado, Lambert, Sturridge

    Davis, Jedinak, Celustka, Figueroa

1FT and 0.9m burning a hole in my pocket. Is it wise to sort out the bench?

Celustka + Jedinak -> Clyne + Arnautovi is a possibility.

    Any other thoughts?
