We roll out a new semi-regular article this evening, examining and analysing some of the most pertinent quotes from managers and players alike from the Gameweek fall out. For our first instalment, we find Jose Mourinho praising Fernando Torres, Manuel Pellegrini refusing to back off-form Joe Hart, Roberto Martinez discussing the impact of his recent substitutions and Brendan Rodgers explaining the decision to drop Victor Moses from the Liverpool XI – it’s not as obvious as you might think.

“It was a fantastic performance and even better because there was an easy chance missed and that makes it even more valuable because many times when a striker misses an easy chance he is affected for the rest of the game. A missed goal doesn’t matter, he was there fighting for it, our team isn’t physical, we need his physicality. The people playing behind him; Schurrle is fragile, Juan is little, Oscar is fragile, Hazard is little. You see City, even Aguero, he’s the little one but he’s a powerful tank, so we need Fernando, he gives us a lot. After that, if he scores or doesn’t score it’s okay, we know we can count on him.”Jose Mourinho on Fernando Torres’ display against City

Jose Mourinho suggests that Fernando Torres could be key for Chelsea after his goal and assist contribution helped defeat City yesterday. Having also bagged a brace in the midweek Champions League win over Schalke, Torres looks in the driving seat to continue as the lone striker – given that he’s yet to be handed back-to-back starts in the league, Fantasy managers will remain sceptical in the meantime but at 8.3 in FPL, he’s cheaper than both Eden Hazard and Oscar in midfield and with a superb run of games on the horizon, has already been snapped up by over 8,000 new owners.

“He [Nani] is a regular and captain for Portugal so he is very talented…There were one or two decisions he might have made better, but he got us the (first) goal with a lovely ball. We have a lot of competition for places in the wide areas, incredible competition, and that is what we’re looking for.”
David Moyes on Nani’s performance in the win over Stoke

David Moyes desperately tries to defend Nani after the Portuguese winger was booed from the Old Trafford pitch in the comeback win over Stoke. Nani was eventually replaced by Adnan Januzaj on the hour-mark, with Moyes clearly trying to justify his decision to bench the 18-year-old and start the ineffective Nani. Both players signed five-year deals at the club this season; both look to have very different futures. Fantasy managers will be hoping that Moyes’ judgement doesn’t remain clouded on the pair to limit Januzaj’s starts.

“From tomorrow, we are going to see the best way to arrange things. What do I think about the goal? I won’t talk about it. What do I think about my goalkeeper’s performance? I repeat, the analysis I do with individual players I do with the players…How is the confidence? You must ask him how his confidence is, I talk just internally with the players. We are losing stupid points. In our three away defeats, we’ve had the important responsibility for the goals the other team scored.”
Manuel Pellegrini on the goal that led to Chelsea’s 2-1 win

Manuel Pellegrini refuses to criticise Joe Hart’s error for the winning Chelsea goal but, as the press having highlighted, the City boss also failed to jump to his defence. Having stuck by him following criticism earlier this season, speculation is mounting that Hart may finally lose his City start with Costel Pantilimon (4.9 in Fantasy Premier League) perhaps about to come on to the radar for Fantasy managers.

“The penalty save is terrific. I have just seen it back. With the second chance, Christian does the right thing trying to go across the goalkeeper but he’s made another great save….You have to take your chances. You don’t take your chances, it puts pressure on you. The goals will come. We are creating chances. That’s the good thing. The lads will score. You can’t be harsh on them because more times than not they will take their chances. I won’t criticise them. They have given it everything they have got. On another day, they would have come in 3-0 up”
Paul Lambert on Benteke’s penalty miss and Villa’s goal plight

Paul Lambert remains optimistic Villa will turn the corner after Saturday’s home defeat to Everton means they have now gone three games without a goal. Christian Benteke missed a second spot-kick of the season and also spurned another opportunity to score for the first time since Gameweek 4 – the bandwagon may have stalled, then, but the upcoming schedule (whm, CAR, wba, SUN) still looks promising for the 8.8 priced forward.

“You worry about fatigue a little bit, but not too much. Sometimes when you play every three days you look tired and then in three days you are flying again. It goes a bit in cycles….I will rotate against Chelsea, yes, but play with a team as well who has a good chance to qualify, that will be the target.”
Arsene Wenger talks rotation

Arsene Wenger discussed rotation ahead of an upcoming schedule which pits his side against Chelsea, Liverpool, Dortmund and United over the space of 10 days from next Tuesday onwards. Wenger admitted the Capital One Cup clash with Jose Mourinho’s side looks an ideal chance to rest some of his main protagonists prior to the Gameweek 10 visit of Liverpool the following Saturday – good news for owners of Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Olivier Giroud, after all three were afforded 90 minutes against Palace on Saturday.

“I’m really pleased. I said before that we have a really strong squad. All that matters is every player is ready to help whenever they are called upon. I told Leon (Osman) that it was going to be a good opportunity for him in the last 20 minutes with Villa tiring and when he came on it was a masterclass of getting on the ball in the attacking third.”
Roberto Martinez sings the praises of sub Leon Osman following his match-winning display

Roberto Martinez hails Leon Osman’s impact after he climbed off the bench to produce a goal and assist in Everton’s 2-0 win at Villa. Martinez has now seen his second-half substitutions pay dividend in back-to-back Gameweeks after Steven Pienaar scored the winner in a similar situation last week. Given how successful his tinkering has proved, Martinez is likely to continue with such a tactic – somewhat worrying for Ross Barkley owners, then, after the youngster made way for the versatile Osman on the hour mark.

“After the first half I really thought we needed to try and repair the damage and that’s what we tried to do with (Aaron) Hughes. That helped a bit because we didn’t defend well in the first half with Lallana drifting infield and Sascha staying out on the right.”
Martin Jol explains the withdrawal of Sascha Reither at Southampton

Martin Jol explains his decision to withdraw Sascha Riether at the break during Fulham’s 2-0 loss at Southampton. The right-back had played the full 90 minutes in all but one of the previous eight Gameweeks and has picked up two assists in his last four but Jol’s tactical tinkering suggests he feels the German’s forward forays leave his side a little exposed at the back – with United, Liverpool, Swansea and Spurs in the next five, Riether’s owners will be hoping he isn’t sacrificed as Jol attempts to tighten up his rearguard.

“When you play that system, I’ve been looking to have someone in that controlling role. That allows the other two advanced players to go forward. Lucas came in and filled that really well today. I thought he was excellent in his performance, as were Jordan Henderson and Steven (Gerrard). They made good forward runs and were always available for the ball. It was very, very good.”
Brendan Rodgers explains why Victor Moses gave way for the West Brom clash

Brendan Rodgers explains his decision to drop Victor Moses for Lucas in Liverpool’s 4-1 win over West Brom. As this average position map in our members section highlights, the switch saw Liverpool operate in more of a 3-1-4-2 than 3-4-1-2 formation, with the Brazilian sitting deep in front of the back-three, allowing Gerrard and Henderson license to forage forward against the Baggies. With Philippe Coutinho expected back this weekend, however, the Reds boss faces a dilemma – the former Inter man is expected to line up in “the hole” behind Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, forcing Rodgers into a tactical re-think once again.

“To be fair, I’ve felt better. The last couple of weeks, it’s been quite tough for me. I’ve been sore in a couple of places and I want to play through that.”
Robin van Persie acknowledges his recent injury problems

Robin Van Persie admitted he has been struggling with injuries in recent matches for United. Omitted from the Champions League win over Real Sociedad, the Dutchman returned to the starting XI and grabbed a goal and assist in the narrow win over Stoke on Saturday but has still been sold by over 10,000 FPL managers ahead of a trip to Fulham. Having racked up 19 points over the past two matches, Van Persie – who has also scored in back-to-back matches for the first time this term – may be finally starting to find his form after a difficult settling-in period under new boss David Moyes but continues to be overshadowed by Wayne Rooney, with the latter enjoying something of a renaissance under his former Everton mentor.

he's the thing, if martins is fit, only two out of evans/rosales/neagle/moffat can start cuz i'm assuming EJ Dempsey and Martins are all nailed on. was dempsey playing centrally or out wide last night?

and the other thing with rosales is he seems to he doesn't always start, and when he does he usually gets subbed on 60 or 70 mins. and i'm crossing my fingers but he seems to be injured or get injured right around the playoffs

The following 23 men (in alphabetical order) are in contention for the FIFA Ballon d’Or 2013:

Gareth Bale (Wales), Edinson Cavani (Uruguay), Radamel Falcao (Colombia), Eden Hazard (Belgium), Zlatan Ibrahimović (Sweden), Andrés Iniesta (Spain), Philipp Lahm (Germany), Robert Lewandowski (Poland), Lionel Messi (Argentina), Thomas Müller (Germany), Manuel Neuer (Germany), Neymar (Brazil), Mesut Özil (Germany), Andrea Pirlo (Italy), Franck Ribéry (France), Arjen Robben (Netherlands), Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), Bastian Schweinsteiger (Germany), Luis Suárez (Uruguay), Thiago Silva (Brazil), Yaya Touré (Côte d’Ivoire), Robin Van Persie (Netherlands), Xavi (Spain).

For the first time I think this is a proper solid list, the only person I don't agree to is Eden Hazard : he wasn't even Chelsea's best player last season

    A) Save transfer
    B) Nolan -> Amalfitano (if fit) and bench Ravel
    C) Toure -> a 5.4m or below defender (Kos, Kolarov, Williams, Ridgewell, Rat) and bench Clyne

    Boruc
    Baines, Terry, Clyne
    Michu, Ramsey, Mirallas, Ravel
    Suarez, Aguero(c), Giroud

I prefer Swans sched between now and gw 17 compared to Southampton's

Mind you, even in Southampton's bad run of games, they have a few good ones

With Murner's good fixture run and Chester almost back, Clyne works well within your group of defenders... you'll have weeks you can easily start 4

I think that's a -4 hit that strengthens your team in every position, and gets rid of two players doing nothing for you for ones that will help carry you forward

Lacks the sex appeal of Suarez & Aguero, but gives your team balance, and gets Benteke's lovely run of fixtures on the menu

            Hmmm... for you to ponder...

maximizing the number of players earning points and bonus points each week is essential

                the rest is details

Rooney is in the same class as Aguero & Suarez:
I think having one of those three is necessary
I think having two of those three is a luxury
I think having all three of them is gluttony (which usually gets punished)

... and I thought David Silva was your weakness; team balance was unexpected 😉

Oh man not again....I did mean David Silva 😆

yes, clyne is better, but maybe not for a hit if you can still get him next week

                    Soldado to Benteke
Kim to the David Silva science project

sold to Salma, for freeeeeeeeeee !

and with that, I must bid you a good night

Anything left to consider. Any hits people would take? Definitely not taking a hit to get Aguero in. I like my strikeforce. All three scored last GW no way I am taking any of them out.

    Harper (sun)
Dawson (eve)/ Kos (Liv)/ Clyna (sto)
Silva (nor)/ Michu (car)/ Ozil (liv)/ Brady (sun)
Rooney (ful)/ Lukaku (tot)/ Suarez (ars)

    Migs/ JWP/ Ward/ Chester

For next week? I have 0.5 in the bank. You think I should fix defence by getting West Ham defender in and let JWP to rot? (tot/ ars/ southampton/ west ham seem to rotate pretty well I think) Or use 0.5 to upgrade JWP to Morrison next game week???

Hahah, I drew the Nopli in the FA cup...

Isn't he a troll, and wasn't he banned, and aren't banned/moderated members actually prohibited from taking part in FFS approved competitions, and as a result shouldn't I be entitled to a bye into the First Round Proper? 😀

Southampton have increased the amount of clean sheets they've kept when looking at averages per game week by 272.22%. Last season they kept 7 clean sheets. If the 272.22% increase was accurate then this season they'd get 19 clean sheets. Obviously that wouldn't happen, but it'd be amazing if they could keep up the good work they're doing. Only 13 more to go!

Well yes and no. Because they haven't played that many tough fixtures yet. The 6/9 * 38 sum would be to act as if the rest of the fixtures for the season would be the same surely? Where as mine would be an increase of a whole season.

I wouldn't choose City defenders cuz Hart is really a liability recently. Why not Terry or Ivanovic, every one gotta have a Chelsea defender.

Ozil's got too hard a fixture ahead, strongly recommend you acquire him after the game vs. Man Utd. I would rather choose Ramsey over Ozil in the following 2 weeks.

Plus I don't see the advantage of Benteke comparing with cheaper Lukaku so far. They are both prolific but Lukaku is obviously more budget friendly.

Aguero+Suarez is good, best killer and in good form, I have them both in my team.

Is team value of much importance this season?

Most weeks this season have had over 3m in the bank , The new bonus system means the cheaper mids are better value than the expensive ones and there are plenty of reasonably cheap central defenders around.
Bale leaving combined with Van Persie being no better than Suarez , Sturridge , Rooney, Benteke , Lukaku means there no really expensive player that is essential'

This season it could be that sacrificing points for team value may not be that smart.. My normal strategy has been to build team value till xmas then batter the opposition with a team full of studs. Might well not work this year

    Thoughts

Tv is more important as there are more active players now aware of price rise sites like tfpl n fiso

I only found this stuff mid last yr now I react to price rises previously I wud only trf on Fridays after allnews was in

Also if u look at key plyrs like Suarez Ramsey ozil. Boruc all have risen a lot n will continue to rise so keeping good tv is important tp allow big squads

It depends if you want to max on defence. E.g. Chelsea have a great run of defensive games - I'm tempted to double up on their defence which of course isn't cheap.

Agree it is easy to have a cheap yet (relatively) effective midfield right now. Having aguero+suarez+another big hitting attacker is also fairly expensive. But as outlined above I think the main difference this season is a shift of funds from midfield-defence.

as the season wears on, I think being able to move toward the premium strikers and defenders with the best run of fixture will be good, and for that, you may need the money; so I think team value will still have its place, albeit smaller

midfield is challenging; prices of premium midfield players are based on the old bonus system so the whole thing is cockamamie; successfully managing midfield will be an intriguing challenge all season

A lot can change in terms of big hitting Mf coming to the fore. I had to take a hit this week to get in aguero so tv still important to me. My working hypothesis is that every 1m sell value is worth about 10 points come jan WC as you should be able to make that back

Players seem to be falling in price more quickly , means there should be plenty of returning players that are good value.
Players like Snodgrass will eventually become great value when they rediscover their form

Look at Williams 4.8 even Benteke is down to 8.8

I cant see too many premium mids being worth it. They all play for the top four sides and the level of rotation combined with many others in the team sharing the points means they just not so valuable , especially under the new bonus system.

        Chelsea
Hazard Oscar Lampard Willem Shurlle all chasing the same points , shurlle may well emerge as the best and is not expensive ,

Man c Yaya Silva Nasri Navas so much competition especilly when their strikers will grab most the goals

Man u Name one premium midfielder , they dont have a single one

Liverpool none here either Cortinho maybe but he no longer a premium price

Tottenham Not a single expensive mid

Arsenal Ozil about the only premium mid in the game worthy of investment , him and Walcott who no longer that expensive

They just not there this season . Previous years we had Ronaldo Fabregas Lampard Gerard etc

Cheaper mids have always been better value than the expensive ones... just like the 4-4.5m GKs have always been better value than the the more expensive keepers... nothing really has changed in that regard...

But like always, you just have to find the right balance between players with good value, and the more expensive (less value) point getters...

I do, however agree that chasing TV with point hits is folly... but even then there is evidence that it can work.. I had a look at the guy who had one of the highest TV overall at 111.1m, sitting at 55k in rank... if he chose to start playing properly, he could really have a huge advantage on almost everyone... will look for the link...

When it comes to midfielders the big hitters simply are not there this season. Hazard and Mata were very viable last season as they ran the Chelsea midfield , this season they have flooed the midfield with new players . There appears not to be one standout.

        We are missing Bale.

He would of made it much trickier to manage the budget. When you have all the casuals feasting on the likes of Ramsey then it makes it harder for those who shrewdly manage their budgets to make headway
