Having analysed the options in Defence in yesterday’s first instalment, we turn our attentions to the midfield area. A trio of Emirates showdowns brings Arsenal’s two main protagonists into focus, while Chelsea and West Brom’s upcoming fixtures also play a prominent role in recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks:

Three home games in four see Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil occupy the top two spots in this week’s Midfield standings. While the latter has somewhat struggled for form on the road, with one assist in five appearances, it’s been a different matter altogether at the Emirates – Ozil has produced 35 points in three fixtures in front of his own fans. Ramsey has racked up 30 points over the same trio of matches and with Southampton, Hull and Everton paying visit, in addition to a trip to Cardiff, the duo look poised for further Fantasy points. The potential return of Theo Walcott would certainly influence matters but for now, Ramsey and Ozil hold steady until the winger’s comeback is cemented.

Eden Hazard replaces Oscar once again as our chosen Chelsea midfielder. The Belgian is starting to pick up in consistency, with four goals and a pair of assists in his last five appearances compared to a single assist in the first six – he has West Ham, Sunderland, Stoke and Palace in the upcoming five to help continue his climb up the standings. As always with the Blues, uncertainty over the lone forward role elevates their midfielders in our Fantasy thinking.

With a goal and assist in the last two, Stephane Sessegnon is starting to hint at a consistency for West Brom. The 6.6 priced Baggies summer signing has home games against Villa, Norwich and Hull in the next six and also faces a trip to Cardiff –coming in at 5.2, Morgan Amalfitano offers the budget route into Steve Clarke’s midfield but needs to improve upon a record of one assist in five.

Back in the Liverpool starting line-up after recovering from a shoulder injury, Philippe Coutinho was highly unlucky not to pick up the points in the previous Gameweek at home to Fulham. A role on the left of a 4-4-2 lends the Brazilian plenty license to drift centrally and wreak havoc – at 8.5, with a 5% ownership, he has a trip to Hull and home games with Norwich, West Ham and Cardiff to get his Fantasy season up and running.

With David Silva still sidelined due to a calf complaint Yaya Toure is our premium City option in the centre of the park. The Ivorian has already notched five times this term and has back-to-back home games with Spurs and Swansea up next before trips to West Brom and Southampton; at 8.1 to Toure’s 9.6, Samir Nasri, with attacking returns in six of his 11 appearances, is easier on the budget and also has real differential appeal, with just 3% ownership.

While Hatem Ben Arfa has to be content with warming the Newcastle bench, his team-mate and compatriot Yohan Cabaye has been picking up the points. The Frenchman has scored or assisted in four of the last seven for Alan Pardew’s side and welcomes Norwich and West Brom to Tyneside in the next two, with a trip to Swansea also on his short-term agenda – the downside is that he sits on four yellows, just a single caution away from a one-match ban.

Finally picking up the points his underlying statistics have hinted at, Robert Snodgrass has a varied schedule over the next six. Home games against Palace and Swansea look potentially profitable, as does a trip to Sunderland – down to just 5.9 in FPL, he remains firmly under the radar, with an ownership less than 5%.

As many as three Stoke midfielders found the net in the previous Gameweek and while Marko Arnautovic was not amongst them, the summer signing still keeps his spot in this week’s refresh. The Austrian continues to offer plenty of goal threat and with four home games and a trip to Hull in the next six, is relatively kind on the budget at just 5.5.

West Ham’s Ravel Morrison also remains in our thoughts despite his appearance on the Suspension Tightrope – like Cabaye, he’s a yellow card away from a one-match ban. A goal away to Norwich last time around took the 4.8 priced Morrison’s tally to three for the season – he now has home games against Fulham and Sunderland and a trip to Palace in the next five.

Still troubled by a quick return from hernia surgery, Robbie Brady’s owners have been left frustrated as Steve Bruce tries to nurse him back to full fitness. With a fortnight’s international break helping his recuperation, Hull’s top scorer is expected to be fit in time for this weekend’s home clash against Palace – Brady also squares up to Swansea and Stoke in the next five as he looks to rediscover the form which harvested three sets of double figures in the opening six appearances prior to injury.

Southampton’s Adam Lallana has a tough schedule on the horizon. The Saints skipper has been in sensational form – a goal or assist in five of the last seven has helped him up to third in the midfield rankings but with Arsenal, Chelsea, City and Spurs in the next six, he may struggle to maintain his consistency.

I always found it odd that Sven came in for so much criticism. He took England to the quarter finals of 3 major tournaments. Can any England fan say, in total honesty that they think were any better than the 8th best team in the world? No other manager bar Sir Bobby Robson has ever taken England further in a major tournament not held on English soil. (maybe we got to the quarters under Hoddle, not sure)

Sven was a dreadful tactician. Froze when it came to the crunch. Lucky that he actually had one of the better England squads over the last 40 years. Wasting a talent like Scholes is unforgiveable.

The answer to that is a most definite yes. Playing against a 10 man Brazil was a great opportunity.

I remember Bobby Robson was in the punditry team for that game and was asked if anything could have been done to get back in the game. He gave a tactical masterclass, which admittedly did involve bringing on Kieron Dyer.

After the Owen dive England needed everything else to go their way, in that climate and against that opposition. And they got pretty unlucky.Unlike Germany, who benefited from the most outrageous draw.

I wonder if that was that the last time Germany didn't win their qualifying group? Beating them 1-5 was the peak of Sven's reign for sure, but seeing them get to the final showed that it really meant nothing.

Indeed. It felt gruesome to see that German team in the final. It was an underwhelming tournament in many ways. Germany's route again: Group stage was ROI, Cameroon, Saudi Arabia (still only managed 7 points) then in the knock-out stages it was Paraguay, USA and S Korea, none of whom they could score more than once against. I reckon England might have lost to Brazil in the final too with that run of luck.

And it's hard to feel sorry for Italy but that rd 16 game against S Korea was a travesty.

At Euro 04 and 06 World Cup, England should have done better.

Greece won Euro 04, if England could have beaten Portugal they'd have had a real chance at winning it.

Their squad included Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Owen, Terry, Ferdinand, Cole all at great ages - and Rooney bursting onto the scene too. Should have done much, much better at Euro 2004 at least.

Playing Gerrard on the left was one of his worst decisions, and his reluctance to stray away from the bog standard 4-4-2 to try and adapt to the players at his disposal was also frustrating.

Ha ha if you're satisfied with a quarter final place at Euro 04 where Greece went on to win it I think you set your bar a bit low with that team.

8 of the 9 players I named are now Champions League winners, and they were in their prime at that point barring Rooney.

Scholes was on the left purely because he thought he'd make less of a fuss about it, even though he's the best player of the 3 of them.

Even that theory was proven wrong as Scholesy soon retired from international football.

Yeah, there's lot of specifics to quibble over but I don't think we underachieved under Sven. Apart from running it close against Greece we qualified smoothly (more than you can say of McClaren with similar personnel and Graham Taylor). System worked.

Rising stars (First of many - if you like it...)

This post will be similar to Thomas' post about Falling stars, but obviously...the opposite.

The team will be selected from the 'Transfers in' page of the FPL website, and next THURSDAY, I shall post the score of this team, alongside the following gameweeks team. The captain will be based on the captaincy poll (highest at time of posting)

    Team for this week:

    Krul (Howard)

    Vlaar McAuley Jagielka (Lovren Baker)

    Hazard Ramsey Bacuna Lallana (Rmorrison)

    Suarez (c) Remy Rooney

I thought this might be an interesting post to analyse how one weeks bandwagon performs in the following week.

I shall also be completing a captaincy analysis post (more accurately than the previous one) for each game week to help some of you guys decide who to captain 🙂

Repost as first post was due pre Zlatan goal (and subsequently got lost haha)

Lads I'm looking a bit of help. I'm in a last man standing competition in work. Basically you pick a team in the premiership who you think will win each week. Any team you pick, you can't use again. If they lose you are out. It's down to 69 ppl left. Winners scoops a £1000.

I have already used Liverpool, city, Southampton and Chelsea.

I'm thinking united this week or maybe Newcastle.

    Any ideas?

FIFA rankings are a joke when it comes to Brazil. As qualifying games are weighted higher than friendlies Brazil are ranked very low as they haven't played a qualifier in over 4 years. This has seen them slide down the rankings

Granville and any other United fans:

Is Ronaldo the best player we've ever had at the club?

Not to say he's the best United player ever - wasn't there long enough, didn't spend his prime years at the club etc. like say Giggs, Charlton or Scholes. But in my opinion he is the best player I've ever seen play at United (from 07-09). Not seen someone dominate like that and go on to do it the rest of their career.

I can't comment on that, but that will be the consensus,

But for beating teams by sheer skill and force of will alone, Best and Ronaldo were both just incredible and Bobby Charlton has said that Duncan Edwards was the only player who ever made him feel inferior. That is some compliment

Like many great players you only ever see the very best of Best (hehe) on the half hour long greatest moments compilations...Well Ronaldo's would be a three hour matinee...and a lot left over.

Like I said, I can't remember Best, have only seen clips and heard stories. Ronaldo is definitely the best I can actually remember seeing.

I'm basing my opinion on everything I've managed to watch - be it live, on DVD or YouTube as well as things I've read...same as you I assume. Just as far as I can see nothing's been quite as good as him during the period of 07-09.

But then Best definitely burst onto the scene a lot grander than Ronaldo (in '07 Ronaldo was 22-23?) just couldn't manage it for as long as him.

Oh it's hard to compare the 2. If you were putting together a best ever United team you'd find room for both.

I will always have a soft spot for the little ginger wizard with the same hometown as me (and who I have had the pleasure of meeting)

I would say he's probably the best ever player, so yes.

Always difficult comparing players from different eras though. Ronaldo might not have adapted to boggy pitches and heavy balls whilst Duncan Edwards might not have had the pace and stamina for todays game.

Sigh...you can't be serious?! Best ever player? He's not even the best player in his generation, by some margin.

Yeah, always difficult as you say.

I just can't see, from all I've seen live, watched and managed to read, that any United player had a greater period than Ronaldo between the start of 07 to his departure in 09. Has it all.

          I haven't personally seen a player's season better than Ronaldo's 07-08.

I think he was perhaps even better in Europe during 08-09, barring the final of course.

But in terms of United at least I'd have to agree.

98-99 of course ended better but that was one mighty team effort I'd say, not any one standout attacking performer.

World Cup Draw: Think it'll be France in Pot C and Russia in Pot D (the simulator has them the other way round.

Injury news: Hodgson said in his press conference that Ashley Cole was feeling rib injury and "pretty obvious he couldn't continue."

You must have a pretty good team if your transfers boil down to changing a cheap defender.

        Pretty much this.

If I had Lovren or Fonte I'd be tempted to sell as for 5.0 or there abouts you could get a defender with better fixtures like McAuley or Davies. But for around 4.5 (which is what I paid) there is no one better.

Ronaldo is just using this brief period of time while Messi is injured to try and sneak in some recognition / honors. Soon, when Messi is back at his best, we'll go back to seeing his crying face. Shameful to even consider comparing the two.
