The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – Wednesday

A midweek programme under lights provides an avalanche of points as Luis Suarez delivers one of the biggest solo hauls in memory. By contrast, Wayne Rooney’s evening was blighted by a blank, a fifth booking and a home defeat as United’s title challenge withers before Christmas.

The Game Changer

Prior to tonight’s Anfield clash with Norwich, Brendan Rodgers remarked that Liverpool could not depend solely on Luis Suarez for goals following the injury to Daniel Sturridge. Within half an hour, Suarez had emphatically proved him wrong.

It’s ironic that, on an evening where Yaya Toure and Eden Hazard made up ground on Aaron Ramsey’s relentless midfield profits, a striker dominated once again. Suarez, like Sergio Aguero weeks before, stuck to the script to fire a devastating haul of four goals and an assist as he returned to haunt Norwich who continue to haemorrhage goals on their travels.

That shouldn’t detract from Suarez’s display. Thirteen strikes in just nine Premier League starts represents form that matches the very best spells we saw from Robin van Persie last season. In simple terms, Suarez has become essential. Not least to offer a captaincy option who almost guarantees regular returns with the propensity to explode to levels that no other player, not even the prolific Aguero, can match.

The Selection Poser

United’s home defeat came packaged with a bitter pill for Wayne Rooney owners who had to watch on while both Suarez and Aguero returned to the scoresheet while their man blanked. That was compounded by a fifth booking of the season, which guarantees another blank to follow as Rooney sits out the home clash with Newcastle in Saturday’s early kick-off.

It remains to be seen how this will influence transfer trends in the next few days but, having harvested large numbers of investors since his brace at Spurs, Rooney could now be set for heavy sales and a rapid price drop over the next ten days.

Elsewhere, rotation took a chunk out of our squads once again, with an array of talent “rested” to the bench. Olivier Giroud’s remaining owners were perturbed by the news that the Frenchman was handed a much-needed break with a Hull City defence, sans Curtis Davies, arriving at the Emirates. With Nicklas Bendtner firing an unlikely early goal, there may even be further fidgeting required. The last thing Giroud’s owners wanted or expected was the much-maligned Dane suggesting he could deputise as the lone striker from this point on. Nevertheless, an immediate recall against Everton is surely on the cards for the seven-goal Frenchman.

Stephane Sessegnon’s plight looks more serious. Ranked highly in the Watchlist off the back of decent early form for the Baggies, coupled with an enviable set of fixtures, the Benin international has laboured of late and Steve Clarke’s decision to bench him this evening may well be more damaging.

Typically, Sessegnon’s flame has faded badly. Having been the catalyst for much of West Brom’s attacking verve in their five-match unbeaten run which included the win at Old Trafford, he’s slipped back into obscurity at a time when the fixture computer appeared to hand him the chance to establish himself as a mid-price midfield asset of note.

Once again, those who took a punt on a midfield differential have been let down and Sessegnon’s owners will now be wondering if their man can win a recall for the visit of Norwich at the weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Ok so here's the deal regarding team structure. As far as I can see, apart from Ramsey, there are no good mid priced mids. There are plenty of solid cheap mids and expensive mids but none in the middle. For this reason I think the following two attacking structures work quite well

    1. Heavy up front

    Hazard, Yaya, Ramsey, Cheap, Cheap
    Suarez, Aguero, Rooney

    2. Balanced

    Hazard, Yaya, Coutinho, Ramsey, Cheap
    Suarez, Aguero, Lukaku

The remaining funds should be invested in defence/GK where you should be able to afford at least 3 solid defensive players (5.5+)

You could argue that Cabaye and formally Sess were good options but I don't think they measure up against similarly priced defenders such as Terry and Walker.

You've left out Ozil which complicates matters further but Hazaed is becoming reliable.

I've just from SAL to ARS to SAR and now with Rooney out, I'm looking at Remy/Lukaku again but with the option of Haz in midpark.

The question comes down to Rooney or Hazard alongside Ozil.

Good discussion point though. Hulk away.

Its a difficult problem because it comes down to Hazard vs Ozil or Yaya vs Coutinho. Its getting to the stage where we simply can't have everyone putting people into specific camps not unlike the old Oscar camp vs Hazard camp. It is actually making FPL quite interesting this year.

Yep these look like most teams I've looked at round here. I have the heavy top, can't quite afford a second premium mid due to having both terry and Ivan. A situation that will only last for Chelsea next 2 games at which point I plan to go exactly to your structure.

Yeah I have thought about doing this but I do appreciate having Mertesacker and Coleman in my team who are doing exceedingly well for their price. Its simply not worth downgrading them to afford a 6th big hitting attacker.

      Krul

      G.Johnson. Terry. Koscielny. Ward

      Hazard. Ramsey. Gerrard(c)

      Aguero. Suarez. Lukaku

I think I like how my team is balanced. No Rooney is a problem but I'd like to see how I fare with a balanced team. Team balance is really important at this stage IMO. The season had started off with the defenders scoring big and all the strikers chipping in. Then it was the SAR show. Some might argue it still is.
But its not hard to see that, as predicted the mids are starting to find form. You gotta play the fixtures and the form.
Hence I'd always go for #2 from now on despite #1 having served me so well.
Spread the risk and hope for the best

I think you are a big hitter short personally. The structures I have put forward should enable you to have another big hitting mid but perhaps you were late to some bandwagons. I also think GJ and Krul are eating too much of your budget.

Gj is gone if he doesn't keep a CS against West Ham. As for the GK situation, I'm a fan of the 1 gk for every week camp.
Even then a couple of downgrades won't allow me a proper big hitter in the front 7 I reckon.
Hence decent Gk and defender along with a decent mid rather than a bit hitter plus cheapo

TBF your 433 setup looks solid and Ramsey is basically a big hitter anyway. Not a bad team at all. I guess I'm trying to fit in an extra big hitter and still have a strong defence.

Almost agree. I ran some numbers last week to confirm the theory I'd been drifting towards, and have taken up the the following that's working very nicely for me so far (in the top 4k at this stage):

      5.5m/4.5m - rotate
      5m/5m/5.5m/5.5m/5.5m - trade on fixtures
      4.5m/4.5m/4.5m/10m/Rambo - 2+ fixed, 3 bench/stand-in for bad def matchups
Suarez/Rooney/Aguero - start every week. best home fixture gets cap.

That's 50m on a big front 5, and the rest are all clean sheet hunting rotation options. My focus this season is very much on DEF, since that's where the value and consistency is. With CB cleanies currently worth 8-9 points and mid price midfield options misfiring, I figure it's better to run four or five backs with the hope you pull a couple of cleanies out than play the mid price midfield game.

Not a bad strategy and a 523 is definitely a curve ball. I'm a bit scared to employ it myself but I'm thinking I must go for the 433 at this stage if I'm to maintain my SAR forward line as well.

I know, it doesn't sit right if you've been playing a while. I've always plumped for the discount defense with a focus on full backs, looking for attacking returns, in the past; with a power 3 up front and as much value as I can force into mid.

This year the Defs are outperforming the midfielders across the board. There's just no value there yet for me.

      Debuchy, Gabbidon, Distin, Terry, Clyne

I was originally thinking of bringing in Rooney this week for Remy but due to his suspension and RVP's impending return, I'm starting to think otherwise. So, should I:

    A) Stick to original plan and downgrade Nolan to free up the 0.5m or so and then transfer Remy to Rooney when he comes back from injury

    B) Forget Rooney. Use the 2.8m I have to transfer Nolan to Yaya/Mirallas etc or Remy to Lukaku.

    C) Save transfer.

This is the question I was asking myself, but as you said RVP's impending return I still think Rooney is a must keep, I am just hoping he doesnt lose much value while susp...

If I was you I would say c)

Would've hit 100 if I had gone for Hazard over Gerrard. 🙁 But apart from that, very happy with my score of 89. Here's my team for GW 15 as it stands:

      Mignolet,
      Koscielny, Coleman, Chico, Chester,
      Gerrard, Ramsey, Cabaye, Brady,
      Suárez(C), Agüero.

      Daniels, Clyne, Rooney, Morrison.

2 FTs, £0.8m in the bank.

Thinking of rectifying my mistake and just swapping Gerrard for Hazard with one of the FTs. All of Pool's goals seem to come from only one man these days, whereas I don't have any Chelsea cover whatsoever, and Hazard is killing me! Also worried that all of my defenders are playing against each other, and Cabaye has a crap fixture (away to United). What should I do? Suggestions most welcome. Thanks in advance.

        B by far.

        - Toure is not playing
        - Even if he plays, a crappy away fixture and pool can't get CL
        - Make some cash for future transfers
        - In Pullis we trust for CS with this tempting fixture.

People it is wild up here in Central Scotland, wind is 70 80 plus, trains off motorway closed. I know nearest ground this weekend is 200 odd miles away, but if this keeps up along with predicted snow, it may impact on England. Would suggest keeping transfers on hold till last minute

I'm quite surprised that Martinez has done so well with Everton's defence. Going by Wigan's record I thought Everton would be a little worse off without Moyes. Meanwhile United's defence has been a shambles.

I had Lampard in my team for the longest time (always wanted to transfer him out but always had other more pressing issues), am pleasantly surprised that he has found his scoring boots again, probably due to Mou's tactical changes. Happily he is now a differential in my leagues. Hope Lamps can keep this up!
