While Luis Suarez failed to match the performance and points tally of his devastating midweek showing, the Uruguayan did more than enough to justify the Fantasy armband as his dragged Liverpool to another four goals and three points at Anfield. Elsewhere, Norwich City’s rollercoaster season continued, with a Dutch raider coming to the fore to emerge as the latest midfield differential to consider.

The Game Changer

He’s making it look easy. Just as Robin van Persie threatened to kill off the art of the Fantasy Football captaincy in previous seasons, Luis Suarez is doing all he can to remove the skill and insight required to make that crucial decision each week.

Quite frankly, it’s a brave Fantasy manager that overlooks Suarez. Even on an off-day, his threat to the opposition is so substantial, Suarez almost accumulates points almost through force of will. Today, against West Ham, the Liverpool striker produced a far from vintage display – missing opportunities and being phased out of the match by some disciplined early defending from the visitors.

However, a fortuitous own goal, from which Suarez earned one of two assists, handed Liverpool their opener and that paved the way for another comfortable Anfield victory and another double figure Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul for Suarez.

While Aguero, the nearest rival to Suarez’s claim for the armband, notched once again, Suarez is set to outscore him with a sixth double figure points tally in ten league starts. Fourteen league goals and seven assists, over those matches underlines the fact that Suarez is as near to an essential Fantasy asset as any player is likely to become this season.

The Underused

Leroy Fer’s third league goal in five starts must surely bring him to the attention of the Fantasy masses. While we’ve long been acquainted with the erratic returns of team-mate Robert Snodgrass and the budget potential of the tricky Nathan Redmond, it’s Fer who appears to carry the greatest potential for points amongst Chris Hughton’s inconsistent charges.

Owned by less than 1% of FPL managers, the Dutchman’s raids from midfield have been a recent feature of the Canaries play – a benefit of a formation change from Hughton that has fielded Bradley Johnson and Jonny Howson in central midfield, allowing Fer the freedom to support the lone striker. That’s brought three goals for and, even with a price tag of 5.8 in the FPL, it’s surely time to consider Fer as a credible short-term option as Norwich embark on a run of three home fixtures in four: Swansea, Fulham and a beleaguered United due at Carrow Road before the turn of the year.

André Schürrle was the day’s other big points scorer, although his brace at Stoke was not enough to prevent Jose Mourinho’s side slipping to a damaging 3-2 setback. At just 7.1 in the FPL, we’ve long looked upon the German as a potential differential who could offer value as the season progresses. While today’s haul was his biggest of the season, it was also his first league start in six as Mourinho’s midfield continues to tease and toy with Fantasy managers attempting to identify alternatives to the established targets – Oscar and Eden Hazard. In truth, it seems unlikely that we will ever get assurance of a third candidate, even Frank Lampard was rested back to the bench today to frustrate his recent investors.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

A few guys e-mailed me that there was a bug in the rankings tab in the Gargatron where scores over 1000 didn't display correctly. It's fixed now, and originated in that FPL inserts a rogue comma ie 1,000 for some reason. Cheers for notifying me!

        Hi!

Yes I just uploaded a new patch, so it should work for you and that might be why it has disappeared.

Try going to extensions in the menu or typing chrome://extensions in the address bar and then updating it. The version you want is 0.5.1 and it will fetch it automatically, but it might not have done it yet. So you can press update there or restart Chrome and it will work agian

Hey Garg! Just got back from vacation and discovered your gem of a tool. Absolutely cracking stuff mate, you should consider selling it to FPL 😉

Btw is the points from top 100/1k/10k isn't updated till end of GW? Or is it accurate by the end of the day itself?

        Hi man. Thanks!

It's accurate as soon as your overall score on your team page AND the overall league is updated.

So for the top 100 for example I look at this page http://fantasy.premierleague.com/my-leagues/303/standings/?ls-page=3 , so that has to be updated for the point distance to be correct

      Hey, Gargamel,
for some reason it's not showing me points away from the top 100. Is it the same bug and I need to update something or am I just too far away from top 100 and completely hopeless so the Gargatron doesn't even bother?

That's the bug I was talking about yes. If you go to chrome://extensions and press update it should say version 0.5.1.

Worst case scenario you might have to restart Chrome for the update to take effect, but I think just updating it in the extensions tab should work.

Haha, I know exactly what you're talking about! Had a few problems with commas when I was working on my script, and specially tested it yesterday once again to see if those commas in the scores messed anything up in it. Next dangerous date is January 1st when the new wildcard appears, I guess it may cause some problems 🙂

Here's my two pennies worth on a couple of FFS myths.

The ownership of a player does not affect his points.
Owning multiple players from the same team does not affect the individuals points.

There is no need to intentionally find differentials, and no need to worry about coverage. Just pick the players who you think will score the most points. If that just happens that the players have low ownership then great!! It must be an oversight by the masses. And coverage is just plain bullsh*t 😀

Coverage is valid in head to head leagues where you want a consistently good score rather than highs and lows. This applies to having too many attackers from the same team too.

I like my punts though. I wanted one safe season to get a good rank under my belt.

Along the way i realised that if you think a 'punt' will score more points than any mainstream player then you should go for it.

I'm liking the simplicity of just picking who you think will score the most. It allows you room to pick players no one else have, if you think they will score enough.

This game is so much more enjoyable when you have players not many others have. But I've changed from intentionally seeking out these players, to letting them fall naturally in the team. Thanks for the congrats 🙂

I think the important thing in FPL is to have fun. FFS induces way too much focus on rank and few theories as you say.

For eg. I had a bet with my buddy that if RVP moved to United last season, I wouldn't own him no matter what. And so I didn't. Even if it meant I ended up with a shitty rank 😆 At the end of the season, I could walk with my head held high.

Couldn't agree more on differentials. Just having the best scoring players will differentiate you enough. Ramsey aside all players are still not owned by the majority. A differential is only worth it if they outscore their mainstream similarly priced alternative. Some will, most won't.

Coverage works in that it gives you a better range of captains to choose from. The reason SAS is a bad strategy is that when liv are away to top 4 you only have one other striker option to make captain and they may also have bad fixture. Similarly story with defenders and your cheapest midfielders as ideally you want to play those with good fixtures and not bad. Doubling / tripping up reduces your options here.

Got 2 frees. Is it silly to spend both of them getting Everton defenders ( Migs -> Howard and Chico -> Distin) when I have Brady to sort out?

I do like Fer. I was gonna get Snoddy for this run until he got injured.

If it's a choice between him and Cabaye tho, go Cabaye. He's so consistent. Tough games don't affect his output much, if anything he does better. Has good fixtures too.
