Sergio Aguero is hopeful of returning shortly from a calf complaint. Emmanuel Adebayor also hints at a quick recovery after being stretchered off in midweek. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is appointed Cardiff boss, Michael Turner is a hamstring worry for Norwich and Villa’s Libor Kozak is ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a broken leg in training:

Aguero on Course for Quick Comeback

The City forward took to twitter to reveal he is “recovering at pace” yesterday and is using an anti-gravity machine to aid his progress from a calf injury. The Mail have also published further pictures of Aguero in rehabilitation as the Argentine closes in on a return to first-team action.

The Scout Says: Given that City have won the last four matches in Aguero’s absence, Manuel Pellegrini certainly doesn’t need to rush him back into the fold. Although the Manchester side have notched 10 times without the Argentine, Alvaro Negredo has failed to improve upon his returns and has managed just a goal and assist over that period. The Spaniard remains just twelfth-most impressive frontman in terms of points per game, with 4.5. Aguero, by comparison, has served up 7.8 ppg – second only to Luis Suarez – and, with Wayne Rooney struggling to rediscover his top form due to an ongoing groin complaint, many have earmarked a straight swap once the City frontman is fit and available. Pellegrini has already stated he expects Aguero to be back before the month is out – now down to 11.9 and with a mere 8% ownership, his return could prove the catalyst for many a winter wildcard.

Adebayor Hints at Rapid Return

The Tottenham forward also took to twitter to suggest he is set to recover from the problem that forced him off at United on Wednesday evening. Adebayor initially tweeted he expects to “be back before you realise” to a well-wisher – perhaps backing up reports in the local press that indicated the issue was no more than severe cramp. He then went on confirm he is hopeful of making the FA Cup clash against Arsenal this weekend:

“Hey guys, to let you know, recovered from yestedays match and doing everything to be fit for Saturday. Thanks for all your good wishes”

The Scout Says: With further media sources also suggesting he “didn’t seem in bother” upon leaving Old Trafford, the signs bode well for Fantasy managers eyeing up his acquisition. New Spurs boss Tim Sherwood has already indicated Adebayor is “massively important” to his plans and, having produced eight points or more in three of his four appearances since the departure of Andre Villas-Boas, he could be poised for a real bandwagon should he be passed fit. With games against Palace, Swansea and Hull in the next four, Adebayor, at just 7.7, looks another differential to consider – if he continues to perform, his current 3% ownership is bound to escalate as Fantasy managers start to buzz around the reinvigorated north London side.

Solskjaer Appointed Bluebirds Boss
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the new man in charge at Cardiff after being appointed on “a rolling contract” yesterday. The Norwegian leaves FC Molde in his native Norway, where he won back-to-back league titles and a cup in three seasons at the helm – his record there stands at 68 wins, 26 draws and 31 defeats in 125 games in all competitions, with 234 goals scored and 143 against. Talking to the press upon completion of his move, the former United forward said:

“I have a positive outlook. I want the players to express themselves, My style is forward-minded. You could see against Arsenal players like Jordon Mutch, Kim Bo-Kyung, Fraizer Campbell and Craig Noone running at Arsenal and causing them problems. I want the fans to be proud of the team when they walk off the pitch. I will ask for 100% effort that has always been instilled in me by people like the Gaffer (Ferguson) and Roy Keane. I can forgive any mistakes as long as we have a go and enjoy playing in the Premier League.”

The Scout Says: In terms of tactical approach, Solskjaer tends to favour a 4-2-3-1 formation with a penchant for pressing opponents high up the pitch – potentially good news for a mobile forward such as Campbell. We’ll hopefully get an idea of his thinking in this weekend’s FA Cup clash against Newcastle before Solskjaer turns his attentions to league matters. Certainly, the upcoming home schedule looks promising for the Welsh club – with West Ham, Norwich, Villa, Hull and Fulham the next five visitors, their home fixtures could hardly be kinder for the new man in charge.

Turner Concern for Canaries

The Norwich centre-half is set to be sidelined for tomorrow’s FA Cup clash with Fulham after picking up a hamstring problem in the New Year’s Day draw against Palace. Subbed off after just 53 minutes on Wednesday, Turner is set for further assessment, as Chris Hughton revealed:

“We don’t know yet, but I can confirm it was the hamstring he felt. He will have a scan later today and then we will know the extent of it. He is a little bit sore this morning but he is not someone who has been susceptible to that type of injury in the past so we hope it is not that bad.”

The Scout Says: Having served a one-match suspension in Gameweek 19, Turner was immediately reinstalled to the Canaries back-four alongside Seb Bassong at Selhurst Park. A possible absence would hand Ryan Bennett another stint in the heart of a defence which has so far served up six clean sheets this season – the same number as the likes of Liverpool and Newcastle. With home games against Hull and Newcastle allied with a trip to Cardiff in the next four, further defensive returns could well be on the cards for Hughton’s side – should Turner fail to recover, a move to Martin Olsson, at 4.2, looks the safest best for those currently on wildcards.

Villa Suffer Kozak Blow

The Czech forward will play no further part in the season after suffering a broken leg in a training ground collision with team-mate Ciaran Clark. Villa boss Paul Lambert gave the local press an update:

“Kozak has got a bad one. He’s got a broken leg. It was just a nothing challenge and it’s a massive blow. He takes knocks and never moans, he gets on with it. I thought it was a clash of boots at first. There was no noise from Libor at all. No-one knew what happened and then they saw it. It’s a major blow. It was a tackle with Ciaran, just an innocuous tackle in the morning. There was nothing in it. No-one thought anything of it.”

The Scout Says: The injury limits Lambert’s forward options further at a time where his side are struggling for goals. Villa have scored just three times in the last six Gameweeks, though Gabby Agbonlahor is hinting at a return to form and has now notched in each of the last two since being moved up front in a 4-4-2. With Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton in the next four, though, Lambert’s side look unlikely to break out of their current malaise, with Kozak’s injury likely to ensure fit-again Christian Benteke remains in the first XI, despite the stuttering form which has seen him fail to find the net since Gameweek 4.

Evans Worried Over United Defensive Form

The Red Devils’ centre-half reckons his side’s inability to keep out opponents in front of their own fans is down to their offensive style of play. Speaking after the midweek defeat by Tottenham, Evans went on to say:

“They caught us on the break a little bit for the two goals so maybe we need to be a bit more patient. Away from home, you tend to be more defensive in your set-up. Maybe at home we are leaving ourselves a bit too open. We want to entertain our fans and score goals but maybe that is to our detriment a little bit.”

The Scout Says: Already this term, the champions have tasted defeat four times at Old Trafford – more than the whole of last season. United are joint-top with Arsenal for goals scored on the road (21) but, despite Evans’ suggestion of being too attack-minded, they have scored a mere 12 times at home – that’s the same number as West Ham and fewer than Hull (15) and Fulham (13). With three strong fixtures (SWA, CAR, FUL) in front of their own supporters over the next five, though, those holding on to the likes of Evans or David De Gea may just retain their services for now, despite a run of just two clean sheets in the last nine Gameweeks.

Would it be too much to have a triple city attack of Aguero,Silva and Yaya? after all they are the most attacking team currently.

    Chelsea' upcoming home fixtures

UTD, WHM, NEW, EVE, TOT, ARS

Pretty grim. Hazard probably costs around 10m in most teams, worth keeping in the WC?

Not sure who would be more appealing... I think Wally and Hazard are needed (in that order), and if I'm going without a third heavy-hitter it will be Silva.

Can look at it the other way though, in that big tough games mean he's less of a rotation risk.

      He can score/assist v anybody.

Name: Ben Turner, Current Team: Cardiff, Shirt Number: 6, Positions: Defender (Center), Age: 25 years old (21-08-1988), Height: 193cm, Weight: 91kg, Nationality: England
      vs
Name: James Chester, Current Team: Hull, Shirt Number: 5, Positions: Defender (Center), Age: 24 years old (23-01-1989), Height: 180cm, Weight: 70kg, Nationality: England

In short Chester vs Burner debate. Who to pick on a WC. Should you go both. Are they good for 4th or 5th defender. What to expect from them...?

      Long post alert.

      1. PRICE:
Burner 4.2, Chester 3.9. 0.3m difference. There might be some lads who brought Burner earlier or Chester too, so please adopt the price difference to your team.

      I think here Chester wins.

      2. HOME FIXTURES.
We presume you will mainly play those lads, if needed, for the home games.

      Chester

      Burner
      11 Jan 15:00 Gameweek 21 West Ham (H)
      01 Feb 15:00 Gameweek 24 Norwich (H)
      11 Feb 19:45 Gameweek 26 Aston Villa (H)
      22 Feb 15:00 Gameweek 27 Hull City (H)
      08 Mar 15:00 Gameweek 29 Fulham (H)
      22 Mar 15:00 Gameweek 31 Liverpool (H)
      05 Apr 15:00 Gameweek 33 Crystal Palace (H)
      19 Apr 15:00 Gameweek 35 Stoke City (H)
      11 May 15:00 Gameweek 38 Chelsea (H)

For me here Burner is a clear winner. Also I hardly can find fixtures that I like for Chester.

      3. DEFENSIVE STATS OF THE TEAMS:
Cardiff is tied with Fulham for shots conceded this year at a whopping 18.5 per game.
By contrast, Hull only concedes 13.5 per so they are clearly the superior defensive side.

Cardiff conceded a league worst 20.5 shots per game on the road & 16 at home.
For comparison sake, Hull only give up 15.5 away & 11.5 at home.

Hull's 13.5 shots per game put them on pair with Liverpool, Crystal Palace, WBA & Newcastle defensively speaking.

Regarding the past Chester and Hull clearly wins.

      4. PROJECTIONS:
According the ticker on defensive clean sheets Cardiff come out 7th best and Hull 13th best. Hull have some nice away games too, but can we rely playing our uber cheap defender away from home..?

      Here Burner and Cardiff wins.

      5. STATS BY PLAYER.
Both nailed on CB so good for BP. Burner played 20 games, Chester 12 games (picked always when being fit). Burner 0.4 spg, 0.5 spg. Adw (aerials duels won) Burner 4.2, Chester 1,9. Passing: Burner 70,7% PS (worrying for BP), Chester 74,8% PS (also not impressive)

Here I think we have a tie, not much difference in it.

      CONCLUSIONS;
The conclusions is do you vague the past more or you try to predict the future? I was all set on swapping Burner for Chester in my WC but now, not so sure. I think I am gonna keep Burner. Thanks to PASQUALINHO and KYLESHAUGHNESSY for helping me doing this analyzes.

You have to think about the Solskjaer effect too, who tends to favor a 4-2-3-1 formation with a penchant for pressing opponents high up the pitch on there defensive performance. Still not a prove on it, so I haven't included in it.

Good luck with the choice and feel free to comment on it.
      Cheers,

      All the best,
      Daniel 😉

Yeah Forca but I like Bardsley in there. His stats are off the chart. He will score really soon and has great fixtures. Also Williams is interesting one after next week. And you won't get any pts at all from Chester. I saw your uber defense. But I think there is a value in the 3rd differential defender too.

Defenders have been an excellent source of points for me this season. Not sure going with 3 defenders from promoted teams is wise. Especially Chester, his home fixtures are awful.

Look at Zabaleta, 5 assists, 3 double figure scores. The expensive defenders are worth it this season.

Can i make a request for anyone willing?

Those of us with cack TV may need a cheapo 5th midfielder and 3rd striker. Is there a good rotation on these two?

Nice. Although not anywhere near as good as some of the teams on here, i've found a front 8 I am happy with, and managed to squeeze in Bardsley too

                    Cabaye, Oscar, Silva, Walcott (Livermore)
                    Suarez Aguero (JRod)

                    🙂

          Great post, thanks.

One comment on Solskjær is that he likes to go on the offensive and prefers attacking to defending. I'm not sure it bodes well for Cardiff, although not sure how much worse it can get in terms of conceding chances... they have good players, so maybe we'll see an upturn.

I think it really does matter who do you play against. Near the end when they will fight for survival against the main bottom table rivals they will play more defensively and more caution IMO.

I've said it in my long post. Cardiff has THE best home fixtures in the later half of the season. They managed to keep 3 CS at home earlier this half despite the hard opposition. I expect them to be the Hull of this later half. Solksjaer effect might help as well. He's done quite well in Norway

Ha I don't mean that way Daniel 😀

But yeah I agree with your analysis right there. I, too, have most confidence in Burner more than Chester in this later half of the season. If only their price is similar. That 0.4 makes a lot of difference in the budget.

Just a little addition. Hull home defensive record is helped by their relatively easy opponents. But can't deny their defensive capabilities, their away form is still very much decent despite the opponents

I think historically the second half of the season is when all promoted teams start to struggle. Most are not capable of maintaining the intensity they generally show straight after getting promoted. I will go with 3 mid-priced options from proven teams and 2 for bench fodder. The only cheap defender I will consider is Palace because of the Pulis effect.

gw22 should/could be ideal gw for WC

-10 days , so we can catch up prices and build some TV

          -it's still a late wc

-we will get aguero , ramsey and sturridge news

          -we will see new players

-we wont be rushed by wc

-we will see earily lineups if somone fancy punt

reason i dont like gw23 is cause , only 3 days untill next dedline

and there is not much time beetwen gw 22 and 23

hope my team can hold untill gw22 and that prices wont go up like crazy

          when do you wc?

The last possible moment. I am chasing in all minileagues, despite making up 150 Pts over the last 13 weeks. Already the leader in one of them took an 8 pt hit last week and brought in 3 players (Cabaye, Sagna and Walcott) to try and nullify me. Doubtless he will do the same if I show my hand too early.

Who to acquire from the Arsenal 5.4m gang?
              Kosc
              Vermaelan (has he returned?)
              Sagna 5.5m

I don't think Verm is first choice. I'd say I prefer Koscielny because of the greater BAP potential. Plus, you gotta figure he'll have a goal or two from set pieces before the year is over...

Any word on Van Persie? I'm thinking he might be a good 2-3 week punt/Aguero placeholder for my early wildcard if he's fit.

I blame RVP for my terrible start. Too much money to risk now until he's played a couple of 85-90 minute games, especially when folk are WC'ing.

Yeah, I think he's definitely been priced out of the game but he's still explosive and I'm worried that if I go with a Suarez/Adebayor/Lambert frontline I'll have a hard time getting Aguero back when it's time

I'd still hold - and plan for Aguero. Man Utd are not a good team right now, regardless of RVP's fitness.

                Jrod > Welbeck > Hooper
                Baines & Silva > Zab & Yaya

                Safety last.
Always do transfers before rises. usually Sat or Sun.
I have never bought in someone who subsequently got injured, it will happen eventually and it will be well worth the 4 points for the extra 4-5 million that can be made taking the chance early.
It makes the late game a lot easier and saves hits too.

I see your point but I think the advantage in the late stages just makes up for the initial disadvantage. I think its more than injury news you should wait for. Sometimes taking longer to think about your transfers helps. If you make them the weekend of the current gameweek you always end up buying whoever scored

My selling value is 101.5mil and this week's minor red arrow was my first for a while. Obviously can't compete near the top due to an awful start, but that's a points issue, not a price one. Really, the value difference will only tell if Suarez, Aguero and a United forward all hit form again at the same time.

Not that I'm defending waiting for injury news...I think, early on especially, being more impulsive and following rises would've been very beneficial, but I just didn't paid much attention and now find myself in this position. Last year, it kind of took care of itself.

Why do people keep on saying that Tottenham has great fixtures? Yes, Adebayor and Eriksen as players are appealing options, and yes this GW is great, but they also have a tiring Arsenal clash before it which might diminish their potential for attacking returns and after this GW the next four fixtures are far from optimal (swa, MCI, hul, EVE).

I don't understand why anybody would buy any Spurs players just now. About to sell the only one that I still possess after this GW and then reconsider the situation after the City clash, and again after the Everton clash.

And even if I look at what there is after that, it doesn't seem rosy as they have 3 away matches in 11 days. Visiting Norwich 3 days after Ukraine, granted that they fly their first XI to play Dnipro, does not promise points. And that would leave us with just one appealing fixture, the visit of Cardiff, before they play Chelsea and Arsenal.

Not sure if I would rush to sell him either if I already had him, and could have bought 2 rounds ago, but as I didn't buy him back then, I wouldn't buy him now. I could consider him for wild card, but that's still few fixtures away as I'm confident enough with my current team that I wish there was no January wildcard. I think I can make all January transfers I want with a maximum of 2 hits.

Swansea away is not good. It is not awful, as Swans are out of form, but it's not really good either. I would say it's an okay fixture. Swansea plays twice at OT before that match, though, so maybe they will be very tired coming to it.

Thoughts on Craig Noone at 4.3m?

Everyone getting carried away with Mutch and this guy has gone under the radar. Has started the last 5 games.

Bit of praise from Solskjaer in his comments indicates that may continue. Could be a very good 5th mid?

Wait and see. I saw him a few times at Brighton...great player, very quick and jinky down the wing. Like a not quite as good Nathan Dyer. If he can get starts then there is a strong assist potential, but best to wait and see how Solskjaer arranges thing.

in the 5.5 or less defender bracket I'd rank it

              Burner - Coleman - Merts - (Kompany - Collins)

              Walcott - Cabaye - Gerrard - Hazard - (Januzaj)

              Suarez (C) - Rooney (Vc) - Negrado

So, if you had Yaya, Walcott & Hazard as your three "big hitters", and really wanted Gerrard, who the hell would you drop?!

Thanks, looking at WC teams for 2-3 weeks time. Stressful, can't afford all 4 unless I get Berahino as a third choice striker..

Thanks, this was my thinking. Hazard is not on any set pieces (so it looks), and tbh that's what I want from a midfielder. He's scored well recently but will it continue? Hard to tell.

Wont drop any of these three. All three are on great form, are better than Gerrard, while Gerrard is coming back from an injury.

So there is a big chance that you'll find Gerrard having donut breaks on the pitch while those other 3 mids will be firing goals to take your rivals in mini league to the top.

So observe how Gerrard does first. Even if he get an assist or two, still suspect.
