In his first foray into the transfer market since being installed as Sunderland manager, Gus Poyet snapped up former Bolton defender Marcos Alonso from Fiorentina. The 23-year-old arrives on loan until the end of the season as the Black Cats boss looks to bolster his backline in the Wearsiders’ bid to beat the drop:

With just a single league start and a couple of sub appearances to his name for the Italian outfit this term, Alonso is clearly relishing the chance to kick-start his career again. Speaking to the Sunderland official website, he admitted Poyet’s presence played a crucial role in his decision to return to the English top-flight:

“The head coach is giving me a very good opportunity and I’m just very happy to be here and now I’ll do my best to help the team. He’s very good for me. He speaks Spanish so I understand him very well and also he did great as a manager at Brighton – he played very good football. He has so many good experiences from his time at Chelsea and Tottenham – it’s great to work with someone with that much experience and I will try to learn as much as I can…It’s not the first time I’m going to play in the Premier League so I don’t think I need to get used to anything – I just will play. The stadium is great and also the fans – when I played here [with Bolton] the atmosphere was incredible.”

The History

A product of the Real Madrid youth academy, Alonso played 39 times for the club’s B side and found the net on three occasions. The raiding left-back made just a single first-team appearance back in 2010, as a 90th minute substitute, before making his way to Bolton Wanderers for a fee in the region of £2.2m.

Tentatively used by the Trotters, Alonso made just nine appearances over two seasons in the Premier League, scoring once, before the club dropped into the Championship for the 2012/13 season. Finally handed a chance to nail down a regular role, he demonstrated an impressive attacking streak from the back and chipped in with four goals and a pair of assists over 26 league appearances. His displays saw the local press vote Alonso Bolton’s Player of the Year last term and persuaded Fiorentina to snap him up on a three-year deal.

As mentioned above, the 23-year-old has been afforded little opportunity to make an impact in Italy. With Manuel Pasqual firmly ahead of him in the Fiorentina left-back pecking order, he’s appeared just three times for the fourth-placed side in Serie A. On the international stage, Alonso has represented his native Spain at Under 19 level on four occasions.

The Prospects

Certainly, the Spaniard’s prospects of holding down a regular role look good. Poyet seems unconvinced by Andrea Dossena and has handed the former Liverpool defender just one start in the last six league games – Phil Bardsley has mainly been utilised on the left instead, with Andrej Celustka benefitting from game time on the opposite side of the back-four.

Speaking to the press upon completion of the deal, the Sunderland manager is clearly a fan of his new recruit:

“It’s a position we’ve been looking to strengthen and he’s a player we like a lot. I watch a lot of Spanish football and I saw him play for Real Madrid. When he joined Bolton, it surprised me. At Brighton, I was looking for a player in that position, but when he went to Fiorentina that interest stopped. However, I have always kept an eye on him and he became available again. It wasn’t easy convincing Fiorentina to let him come but he wanted to.”

Finally given clearance to make his debut last night, Alonso was immediately handed the left-back berth in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg win over United. His presence in defence allowed the versatile Bardsley to switch to his natural right-back position and, with John O’Shea fit to partner Wes Brown in the middle after recovering from a shoulder problem, Poyet’s selection may well prove to be his first-choice defence for the remainder of the season.

Having produced five clean sheets in the last 10 Gameweeks, the Wearsiders’ backline is certainly worthy of our consideration. The upcoming fixtures further their appeal – their remaining nine matches at the Stadium of Light (SOT, STO, HUL, WBA, CPL, WHM, EVE, CAR, SWA) suggest clean sheet returns could well be on the cards, with the likes of Cardiff offering a strong home/away partnership for those looking to rotate.

So far, Alonso has only been added to the Sky Sports game, at a price of 4.3, though he’s expected to come in at 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). For those overlooking Vito Mannone between the sticks, Brown and Bardsley set you back 4.3 and 4.5 respectively in FPL. Given that Bardsley has already scored twice in 13 league appearances under Poyet, he looks the likeliest target for points at both ends of the pitch – his fellow full-back is likely to struggle to earn our attentions, then, though that may just change if he can replicate the attacking displays of last term at the Reebok.

    SEASON TICKER UPDATE!

Okay well it's not the official one. Jonty mentioned earlier FFS team is working on an updated Ticker as the current one is a bit 'outdated' and all that. (Away to MU a 'very difficult' fixture to get a CS, ha yeah right)

I made a quick ticker ratings just now for the Clean Sheet while we wait for the updated one because who use ticker for attacking anyway.

If you're not familiar with the numbers then just copy paste the text below to 'Import Rankings' and give it a name 'Updated CS' or 'Kof is a Sexy Spud' or whatever. Then click import.

    {"ARS":{"Home":"1450","Away":"1400"},"AVL":{"Home":"1050","Away":"850"},"CAR":{"Home":"750","Away":"900"},"CHE":{"Home":"1350","Away":"1525"},"CPL":{"Home":"750","Away":"875"},"EVE":{"Home":"1250","Away":"1450"},"FUL":{"Home":"900","Away":"1000"},"HUL":{"Home":"850","Away":"1125"},"LIV":{"Home":"1375","Away":"1500"},"MCI":{"Home":"1450","Away":"1500"},"MUN":{"Home":"1275","Away":"1150"},"NEW":{"Home":"1175","Away":"1275"},"NOR":{"Home":"825","Away":"900"},"SOT":{"Home":"1150","Away":"1275"},"STO":{"Home":"900","Away":"950"},"SUN":{"Home":"750","Away":"900"},"SWA":{"Home":"900","Away":"1400"},"TOT":{"Home":"1150","Away":"1250"},"WBA":{"Home":"1000","Away":"1000"},"WHM":{"Home":"825","Away":"950"}}

(If you're interested to what the numbers means and how I get them see below)

    ____________________________

And then I took things a bit further. I thought this might be useful for us who want to focus just on HOME ROTATION.

So I removed all the away fixtures and put the figures as '0' (which means the ticker does not taken account into any away fixtures) So what's left is just the home fixtures.

What's great is you can now see which team rotate with which team easier because it only show Home fixture and with contrast colors.
And also you can know which team have the most easy home fixtures during a certain period.

    Something like this http://s8.postimg.org/r47wkeho5/hometicker.jpg

    {"ARS":{"Home":"1450","Away":"0"},"AVL":{"Home":"1050","Away":"0"},"CAR":{"Home":"750","Away":"0"},"CHE":{"Home":"1350","Away":"0"},"CPL":{"Home":"750","Away":"0"},"EVE":{"Home":"1250","Away":"0"},"FUL":{"Home":"900","Away":"0"},"HUL":{"Home":"850","Away":"0"},"LIV":{"Home":"1375","Away":"0"},"MCI":{"Home":"1450","Away":"0"},"MUN":{"Home":"1275","Away":"0"},"NEW":{"Home":"1175","Away":"0"},"NOR":{"Home":"825","Away":"0"},"SOT":{"Home":"1150","Away":"0"},"STO":{"Home":"900","Away":"0"},"SUN":{"Home":"750","Away":"0"},"SWA":{"Home":"900","Away":"0"},"TOT":{"Home":"1150","Away":"0"},"WBA":{"Home":"1000","Away":"0"},"WHM":{"Home":"825","Away":"0"}}

After seeing the result, it just reconfirms my selection of upcoming WC defenders based on the home fixture analysis I did here as well 🙂

So this is how I get it, if you're interested to know.

First of all you need to know how whether the ticker determine a fixture is favorable (blue) or unfavorable (red) for CS is how good is the opponent's attacking is. That is why you see regardless of which team (City who's good at home defensively or Fulham who's meh), playing home to Swansea is always considered "difficult".

So basically I formulate the ratings based on team's attacking threat both at home and away.

And the way to read is the opposite as well. City's 1500 "Away" rating means keeping a CS at Etihad has the difficulty of 1500. (800 is the lowest "extremely favorable" and 1400 is the highest "extremely unfavorable" - anything below and over is outliers).

Main factor to get the numbers is Goals Scored obviously. I actually picked a 'base' rating of 900 to a relatively lower team and 1400 to the higher ones, then everything else is just arithmetic function. The team in between is just calculated base on their percentile of goals scored and translated into rating of between 800-1400.

A picture is worth a thousand word they say : http://s8.postimg.org/vrdym6511/how.jpg
(for you mathematician out there, try to solve what the function means in the box means)

And from that base number then I modify it just a bit based on the team's recent form, league position and other minor factors (change of manager, etc). The changes are very minor (~100 rating at most)

      Tada.

Don't tell anyone but this is part of our grand scheme so that spuds can take over the world.

As I've been focusing on fixtures alone, I will probably get
Boruc Davis (not a fan of rotating keepers)
Coleman - City defender - Cardiff Sunderland rotation - Chester or Baines if I'm going 4-3-3.

Ah true. I've actually just did a modified version which includes the blanks but it's hardly matters because it's been included in the final adjustments.

Teams average 2.5 blanks at home so far and 3.5 blanks away from home so Swansea is definitely decent. 1400 is a bit high but it reflects to their attacking quality - statswise.

I would definitely use the other FT. Ravel, Toure, and Rooney are all doubts this week, but your bench can't really pick up the slack. I'd play Burner ahead of Ward.

^This is probably the best you can do without sacrificing too much on your attackers. Keep Coleman if you got him early, Koscielny if not, then spend about 18m on the other 4 and use the extra cash to upgrade Berahino/Noone.

        Sure you can

Effectively, the formation for the GW will depend on the more favourable fixture out of: Berahino, Bardsley/Ward & Noone - for that last slot in the starting XI?

That's how I'm looking at this side. Solid throughout.

But what's the reasoning behind wanting RVP ahead of Aguero? Think he'll outscore Kun in the 2nd half of the season?

I see what you mean. Looking at a 3-way budget DEF rotation, and upgrade elsewhere - I.e. Berahino becomes JRod.

I don't mind the idea of 3 solid/expensive DEF choices, though.

Arguements for and against both options, I suppose

I think he has the potential too which is all I have to go on right now as both men haven't played for a while. If I call it right then it'll be a pretty nice differential for me to have for a while and I need to get up the ranks fast. Basically I need to win my money league and I doubt any of them will go this way. You're right on the rotation but I just liked the defense.

Are you WCing this week? I'd stay away from RVP until he at least plays some minutes first.

Id much rather have something like 2 of Lukaku/Ade/Negredo/Bony than RVP and Berahino at the moment. The rest of your squad is fairly solid. 7/10 😉

you're weakening the team too much to fit Aguero in. Granted he's a solid differential, but Aguero can match his output easily. Would lay off RVP for now, i've learned my mistake of wasting on wildcard to fit him into the squad.

Ended up with a massively imbalanced squad and took a solid 4-5 GWs to recover from that. The effects are less pronounced now that we have some extra team value to play around with, but still negatively effects balance.

Hate this term "template" Of course these teams will be similar. There's a small pool of expensive players that will get huge points and then out of the cheaper ones there's a small pool that offer the best value. Different for different's sake is just silly

The best way to gamble on big rank increases is differential captains every now and then imo.

Yeah difference for difference sake is silly but this is RVP. Once an fpl god and prob the main reason man U are doing so poorly right now. If he comes back and finds form isn't he worth the risk when looking for differentials? I take your point about (C)s and its a fair one but Suarez is making it pretty hard lately to go against the grain. Guess I need to gamble more there also.

FFS is a minority in the grand scheme of things. I don't see the point in taking a big risk with form, price etc in one position and weaken 3 others. But to each his own, could turn out fantastic given that if others want RVP in, it will take hits to get there. But an easy exit for you if it goes south - though it would take hits to redistribute the wealth.

I just think there's too many downsides to the RVP call. You can find differentials elsewhere. like Cazorla instead of Ozil,Baines over Coleman etc.

My Wildcard Team (too many injuries, had to take the WC option) -

    0.0 itb

    Marshall, Mannone

    Ward, Bardsley, Chester, Coleman, Koscielny

    Hazard, Lallana, Yaya, Ozil,

    Suarez, Lukaku, Rodriguez

My current 4.6 is Ravel Morrison. West Ham have good fixtures but are playing terrible. Any options in that price range?

Should I do Yaya to Silva?

    Any other glaring errors?

    Mertesacker Clyne Bardsley

Ha! That was my initial reaction to Toure's injury also. 'There goes the Silva differential!' - with the amount of WCers this GW... If Toure's injury is worse than expected, Toure > Silva would be the most logical

    WC idea:
Assuming Suarez & Aguero are locked into the first two striker spots, how about Giroud for the third?
It will depend on whether Arsenal signs a marquee striker in January, of course, but he seems like a decent differential.
I'm still not sold on Ozil's value (FPL-wise) and there are question marks over the rest of the Arsenal midfield. Giroud might be the best route into Arsenal attack.

Well, as the lone striker for a team that scores a lot, his price is reasonable. Down to 8.5 and will probably fall more. For all his wastefulness, he does have 8 goals and 5 assists.

Ozil is prob 1 mil more than he should be on the Value scale but he does come with decent upside. Has like 1st or 2nd most Key passes per game in Fpl so you know assists will be there. On Pens when Art isn't on the pitch and seems to never be rotated even when people expect him to be. His shot totals are not super amazing but he does get a faair amount of touches in the box so you can expect a few goals especially at home.

I've convinced myself to transfer out Rooney
    1. Moyes won't give us clear clue whether he'll start
    2. Even if he starts, he'll play with an injury. Bad performance + frustration will lead to a 1 pointer after his siilly yellow
    3. MU on a bad patch. If people thinks this will be their rebound based on their 3 losses, well you can say Benteke is 'due' for goals as well.

So guys need some inputs with the transfers. Kneejerking pre WC punt moment here

    a) Roonpig -> Negredo this week
Sterling -> 8.2 mid or Fonte -> Lolarov / Zaba next week

Hmm...risky game booting Roonpig wherever he plays. Would be tempted to keep this week, assess and then make a move next week.

Yes most likely. I've learned the hard way. I booted him for Lukaku on GW 8 😉

Cheers Jaf. Plenty of time for me think. Hopefully tomorrow's presser can sort it out

I agree with the reasoning re:Rooney. Unfortunately, I will leave him in for a few weeks until my wc is activated. I have bigger issues.
I prefer A, upgrading the defence (though I'm not convinced on Zaba or Kolarov). I think that having the flexibility to play 4 at the back will be important post January.

It's just until im WC which is just 2 GWs away. So basically the defense upgrade next week is just for that GW only.

But yes I will have the flexbility to play 4 a the back for my WC.

A hit for a defender is normally a breakeven move at best and usually results in the loss of points. A hit for a defender with a W/C available is criminal. Dawson is also pretty terrible and the way Tot are playing I doubt they can keep counted on to keep many CSs even vs weak teams.

The last 3 weeks you could have done well moving the armband...

        GW 18 - Suarez(1) - I had Silva(7)
        GW 19 - Suarez(5) - Luk(9)/Haz(10)
        GW 20 -Suarez(6) - Walc(11)

I think this will be another....

Agree. Either Hazard or Suarez for (c) this GW. Stoke have improved their form, especially at home, somewhat over the last 2 months...So could see a few more stray away from locking in Suarez as (c)

Rooney, if declared fit, also becomes a viable (c) option
