Midfield Analysis – Last Six Gameweeks

Due to domestic cup duties over the next two weekends, just 10 of the Premier League’s 20 teams have a fixture in both Gameweek 28 and 29. With City and Sunderland out of league action until mid-March, owners of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Adam Johnson are pondering their midfield options and mulling over some short-term transfers in order to plug the gaps.

In our second members article of the week, we dig deep into the data of those 10 teams and analyse the midfielders who have offered the greatest goal threat over the last six Gameweeks.

Looking at options who have registered eight or more efforts on goal over the featured period, Chelsea supply us with five players, Norwich chip in with four, whilst Southampton and Palace both have a couple of midfielders in the assessment:

I'd agree with most of that, added to the debate myself last night, I'd offer my support to United fans but at the same time as a Liverpool fan its hard to resist a bit of casual United bashing for banters sake!

True some of the stuff said is vile, for example I was disgusted after that fan made the airplane gesture towards United fans, one fickle idiot ruined what had been a great show of mutual respect between England's two most successful clubs.

I like to think United fans have learned to take it quite well considering the circumstances of our season. All you can do is hope things turn around next season and try and build some momentum towards that. Success can't continue forever and you have to take the ups with the downs.

Its just so hard to like the guy when he refuses to play anything other than his rigid 4-4-1-1.

Why sign a 40 million pound AMC and play him in the wing? We should of spent 20m for that Konyaplenka or whatever, it least he is an actual winger!

GW30 and Beyond - time for a team revamp?

    Number of games left:

    12 - Man City, Sunderland
    11 - Everton
10 - Palace, Arsenal, Villa, Hull, Liverpool, Man Utd, New, Swansea, West Brom, West Ham
9 - Tottenham, Southampton, Stoke, Norwich, Fulham, Chelsea, Cardiff.

Some quick comparisons for popular players based of their ppg and how many games they have left till the end of the season:

    Goalkeepers
    Boruc 4.7 ppg x 9 games = 42.3
    Adrain 5.8 x 10 = 58
    Mannone 5 x 12 = 60

    Defenders
    Ivanovic 4.4 x 9 = 39.6
    Bardsley 3.4 x 12 = 39.6
    Coleman 5.2 x 11 = 57.2

    Mids
    Snodgrass 3.5 x 9 = 31.5
    Lallana 5 x 9 = 40
    Hazard 6.2 x 9 = 55.8
    Ince 7.5 x 10 = 75 😉
    Yaya 6.3 x 12 = 76.8

    Strikers
    Lambert 4.5 x 9 = 40.5
    Adebayor 6.7 x 9 = 60.3
    Sturridge 8 x 10 = 80
    Aguero 7.7 x 12 = 92.4

I'm seriously considering dropping Adebayor, Lallana, Cahill and Hazard, probably in GW30 & 31 - City, Everton and cheap Sunderland fillers are on my wish list.

    Anyone with me?

Surely, form could have some effect on those ppg.
I remember bringing in Howard because of that high ppg early December and has a great run of fixtures to increase it then cue a big fall of form..

What are people with Mannone/Adrian combo doing? I'm thinking of going keeperless in GW29, and saving a transfer instead of getting Ruddy for one of those.
At first, I wanted to get rid of Adrian (despite he's great value) 'cause WHs fixtures arent that good from gw 30. And Mannone's are good, plus he'll have more DGWs. But now, WHs GW31 looks great, and I don't want to loose either of them. Smart move, or...?

Lukaku coming back means more comp up front. Deulofeu and Pienaar also options.

Everton midfield has been stuttering recently. Runs up blind alleys and hopeful shots by Mirallas haven't helped. My opinion but he doesn't look like he's helping the team at the moment.

Is that because Mirallas has been playing out of position up front as a striker? obviously its not his natural position and a start on the right when Lukaku returns looks assured? Presumably Barkley will play in the hole and Piennar on the left?

Deulofeu has been a sub all season and I'm not sure thats about to change unless there is a dramatic drop off in form on one of the other forward players.

    Boruc (Davis)
Azpi - Ward - Ivan - MOlsson (Chester)
    Noone - Haz (v) - Lallana (Yaya - Mata)
    Studge - Ade (c) - Suarez

    GW29:
    Boruc (Davis)
Azpi - Ward - Ivan - MOlsson (Chester)

its a book of short stories that themself reference a fictional play called The king in yellow which supposedly is so horrific than if you reach Act 2 you will go crazy( gives some cool meaning to things in the series)

Cheers Doosra..Top post that. Liverpool fans are at an advantage as they are the best (on mass) fans in the country..top club, top fans....I loved the applause for Shelvey's goal at the weekend..most fans at other clubs would have been chanting "Judas, Judas" at him...

The Kop is amazing. I'm from Ireland but have been fortunate to have been on it around 40 times over the years.

I live in Preston..so not too far away..I've worked in Liverpool quite a lot and it's hard for folk to realise, unless they have spent a lot of time there, just how much the city revolves around football..it's just immersed in it, red or blue...

Just an example Leeds clinched the title at Anfield. A defeat for Leeds might have swung the championship towards the home team, but Leeds held out and won the title. When the Liverpool players left the pitch, the Leeds players didn't know what to do with themselves. Walking towards the Kop, they were unsure of the reception they'd get from the 53,750 fans packed inside Anfield. One Leeds player raised his hand towards the Kop and then the others followed suit. At first there was silence, then the applause started and it just didn't stop. The reaction from the Kop that night is legendary. "To stand there as a Leeds player and be cheered by the Kop that was something," claimed Charlton after the game. "I'll never forget it." Don Revie enthused: "It was simply fantastic, What a great gesture. You would have thought their team had won the league!" » Read

He's been terribly inconsistent though ... his set-pieces are quite good but nothing on the other end to convert.

I still think they should have had a crack at getting Demba Ba, or Bemba Da ... two equally as good options.

How about Mccartney as a cheekey wee differential. He's got a few more games without competition and even then we've seen Big Sam is unwilling to change the backline when it's working. I'd be interested to hear Doos' thoughts..

      Lat Nighters / Early-morning DZers:

I am an enormous fan of football, and especially the EPL. My interest has no doubt been escalated since the Test Eagles first entered the realm of fantasy football.

However ... I am yet to find a team to support and am wishing i could. I've tried some bandwagons (Man City) and some anti-bandwagons (West Brom) and have a soft spot for Everton (being an Aussie Timmy Cahill is God) but have never had a team to set my heart on and that's it.

I expect living in the UK you'd probably be brought up with a team, by region or by father's choice, with the threat that if you don't support them you'll be set on fire and left in the hills for the wolves.

My question is this, then: How did you come to support your EPL team and on a rating of 1-10 how passionately do you support them?

I cant place myself on the scale as i don't know what 10 represents - is a 10 a drunken idiot who attends every game but prob falls asleep during it, knows nothing about football and looks for fights?

I support spurs, since age 4, as a result of my brother supporting arsenal. Twisted I know. I would say 5 on there basis that I follow quite avidly but only go to a game a season roughly. I also live close by.

Manchester United. They were the only team televised back in the day here in the US. Started out wanting to hate them, fell in love with their style of play. As you can tell, I'm not talking about this year! 🙂

I secretly admire Everton though! Love how involved with the community they are, the "blue collar" work ethic, guys like Baines and Jagielka who I think would play for free, etc. They are a big club (BPL wise) with a rich tradition but interact with their supporters like a small club. They really are the People's club.

I have been over to Old Trafford, hoping to return again when funds allow. But I plan to sneak over to Goodison for a match someday also! 🙂

Coming from NZ al we ever saw of the PL Wes the odd goal highlights and the league standing Gs. I remember United we're always Round the top and at the time I liked to support any other team just to change it up. However when I started to watch the odd game and saw the likes of a young Ronaldo play I was inspired as a young lad myself. I respected them because they gave young players a chance and I've supported united ever since.

Blackburn Rovers..and it's a 10..I grew up in Blackburn and have been going to matches since the late sixties...No question of ever "supporting" anybody other than my hometown team but have been on many, many grounds in the football league to watch other clubs either when the Rovers have been playing or not...Just because I'm a Rovers supporter doesn't mean everybody else is automatically garbage...far from it.

92 seems a decent UCL score for a squad with Kolarov, Kaka, Balotelli and Taarabt in it.

Stats aren't everything. I once ran a comparison between Ki and Lallana and Ki's stats were far superior.

Snoddy may do well, but the bottom line is that he has 3 goals and 1 assist all season, 27 game weeks in. Doesn't really matter how many chances he creates does it, when the end result is that? Proof is in the pudding as they say.

Cue Snoddy hat trick for my insolence...

My plan: use my 2 FT's this gw to get Ivan and Ince. That gives me a comfortable 11 + a 1 bench player for gw 28, and 10 playing for gw 29. Then I get Toure + Company in for freebies for gw30, Aguero in for gw 31 (depending upon fitness). Keeping Suarez/Studge, that gives me Kompany, Aguero, Toure, Studge, Suarez and Mata for the dgw 31.

Sound ok or is there a flaw in my master plan?
