Scouting The Doubles

Tottenham approach their double gameweek on the back of a controversial Stamford Bridge defeat last weekend but, dodgy decisions aside, have not been in the best of form of late, with just one win in the last eight league games.

For months, Harry Redknapp’s side had been vying with Man City for the all-important fourth spot that would offer the chance of Champions League football next term, but now find themselves in sixth place, overtaken by a resurgent Liverpool. Level on points with Kenny Dalglish’s men, Spurs do have a game in hand and gaining those points will be vital, considering their gameweek 37 fixture is a trip to Anfield.

Prospects

First up in the double gameweek is a home game with Blackpool this weekend and a chance to avenge the 3-1 defeat at Bloomfield Road back in February. Spurs have drawn as many games as they’ve won at home this season but have scored 8 in their last three at White Hart Lane and will surely be too much for a Blackpool side that have collected one point and conceded 18 goals in their last six trips on the road.

The second game is a tricky fixture; a trip to Eastlands, where Man City have won seven of their last eight games. Roberto Mancini’s side have also clocked up ten of their fifteen clean sheets this season at home. Spurs have failed to score on the road just once since October, however, and, knowing a win would really open up the race for fourth spot again, can’t afford to sit back and be too cautious.

Likely Lads

Clean sheets and Tottenham tend not to go hand in hand and with the side conceding 2 or more goals in six of their last eight league fixtures, it’s more than a leap of faith to suggest their defensive options offer much hope of decent returns.

Instead, it’s a couple of midfielders that seem the best bet. Rafael Van der Vaart has come back into form of late, picking up 25 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points in his last three games. With spot-kick duties factored in, it’s no surprise to see him leading our current Captain’s Poll.

He may have just 2 goals and 2 assists to his name thus far, but Luka Modric is second only to Charlie Adam in Bonus Points this season- his total of 31 is just one point shy of equalling Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale’s combined tally. Modric has been awarded Bonus in 14 of his 28 appearances- a sign of his consistency of performance.

Cheeky Punts

Gareth Bale’s recent form suggests he’d be no more than a punt for this week; his highest score in his last nine appearances has been 3 points, he has 1 goal and 1 Bonus Point in 2011 and has not assisted a Tottenham goal since gameweek 16. The chance of him tearing Blackpool apart will see much Fantasy Investment this week but with hamstring injuries to Benoit Assou-Ekotto and Vedran Corluka, there’s a possibility he could be fielded at left-back.

A look at the Tottenham forwards suggests Roman Pavlyuchenko seems the most likely bet here; the Russian is the only attacker with any guaranteed game time right now. Pavlyuchenko has started eight of Spurs’ last nine games, scoring three times in that run of fixtures, whereas Peter Crouch and Jermaine Defoe have managed eight starts between them, an indication of Redknapp’s current selection policy.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Worth sticking in your team, if not just to free up some funds and AVL looks a decent fixture?

Should be interesting to see how the Vermaelen situation develops. I wouldn't be surprised to see him play once or twice.

I hope Valencia plays on Saturday.

He has done well for me when he has been involved and I could do with him getting a start this weekend. Hopefully a decent performance this evening will cement his spot against Chelsea.

I fear (as I have him) that your decision will be made by Sturridge's absence. However, I would start Sturridge with Suarez first sub. I don't have such a strong midfield, though, so I will be starting with Suarez myself.

Midfield and Berbatov are fine, I just don't trust Evans after his collapse as a player last season, would love for him to prove me wrong, but Schalke should not be underestimated, that being said they are 10th in the Bundesliga, that United team SHOULD put them away (famous last words)

No, it isn't - see below:

Neuer; Uchida, Höwedes, Metzelder, Escudero; Jurado, Papadopoulos; Farfán, Baumjohann, Draxler; Raúl

Subs: Schober, Sarpei, Edu, Schmitz, Karimi, Huntelaar, Matip

In other words, Höwedes is fit again, Escudero (who offers a more attacking option at left-back) replaces Sarpei. Two attacking wingers in Farfán & Draxler, Baumjohann in the classic number 10 position. Edu dropped, Raúl as lone striker.

Dempsey->VdV,Luiz->Dawson for -4?Will have to sell Luiz to free up funds for the VdV move.Or should I do either RJ->Carr or Coleman->3.9 DEF and keep Luiz? But then I'll be having just 2 DGW players(VdV and Silva) despite taking a hit.And who should I get if I sell Coleman?Stearman,Elokobi,Foley are some of the options?Or maybe Williamson?Already have Simpson so that will be doubling up.Thoughts?Cheers.

Only got two wrong with my Fanatsy Fergie prediction, Valencia and Evans playing instead of Owen and Vidic.

My prediction for Chelsea will be:

      VDS
      Fabio Vidic Rio Evra
      Valencia Carrick Giggs Park
      Rooney
      Hernandez

Looking at it like that though, I think Chelsea have a very good chance to take the three points.

      please pick
      A) Amneoibi to Defoe/Crouch/Pavlu (4pt hit)
      B) Play Amneobi (no hit)
      C) Play Nani (no hit)

He was a real talent, unplayable at times. Started off one of the seasons with 6 goals in 6 games. Shame G.Neville ruined his Arsenal career.

For a short spell Reyes looked like the real deal.

But he couldn't cope with all the hacking he got, and missed his mum (no shit, typical Andalucian).

What? Reyes was brilliant at times. If you ever have time to kill I suggest you watch the Henry goals series on YouTube, Reyes assists a shitload of goals and looks incredible most of the time. Nasri still has a long way to go before he's better than Reyes for me.

It's my most important game in my h2h league, I'm playing 1st place, and if I win I can go top, which is pretty good after being 8th 4 weeks ago (Won 4 games in a row to go 3rd).

      Current Team:
      Foster (al-habsi)
      Djourou Simpson Luiz (RJohnson Smalling)
      Lampard Kuyt Silva Adam (Walters)
      Sturridge RVP Suarez
      0.3m
      Thinking of either doing lampard + walters/adam > VDV + Modric/YToure OR adam/walters + Suarez > VDV + Odemwingie

      He has:
      Cech (Myhill)
      Luiz Terry Clichy (Williamson Baptiste)
      Kuyt Meireles Silva Dempsey (Parker)
      RVP Bent Odemwingie

He's probably going to get VDV in for one of his cheap midfielders. He tends to never make a hit and his players on the bench are always cheapest possible so he can spend more money on the fielded players.

      ANy tips?

neuer is brilliant, but last week barring the top corner save from rooney he made saves which you'd expect a keeper to make. just because he made a lot of them doesn't mean it wasn't a lot of bad finishing. it shows how un-touchable giggs, hernandez and rooney are that neuer got all the credit.

Disagree, the finishing looked worse than it was because he got out so fast and made himself huge. A keeper having a stormer is always partly down to not great finishing of course.

over-rated performance imo. but i can appreciate what you say about him coming out so quick and pressuring giggs for example into a poor 1 on 1 finish. the evra header in particular was paul robinson-esque

It's certainly a more attacking line-up from Schalke - but it all depends on whether they've got the confidence to go for it this time.

It would have been a much more interesting tie if Schalke had played the away leg first: they always seem inhibited in their new(-ish) stadium in Gelsenkirchen and I wasn't surprised that they froze so completely last week.

Perhaps player wise, but I think the formation was more attacking in the last game. They basically left 3 forwards back at the Man United defence all the time. I've not looked much into it yet but are they not lined up in a 4231 now? The most defensive formation of all as far as I'm concerned.
