Last weekend saw the return of Jose Bosingwa to Premier League action after a year-long absence with a knee injury and the Chelsea full-back thoroughly impressed against Mick McCarthy‘s Wolves.

Although Chelsea have both Branislav Ivanovic and Paulo Ferreira as options for the right-back slot, Bosingwa is perhaps the best fit for Carlo Ancelotti’s system and the Chelsea boss admitted as much after the 2-0 win, saying:

Bosingwa was one the best players on the pitch. He put a lot of pressure on in the second half by pushing up without the ball and he had opportunities to score. For 70 minutes he played very well and he is an important player for us in the future because we can use his speed and resistance to play better in attacking play.

A look at this Average Position map from the Wolves game indicates there was not much positional difference between Ashley Cole (no.3) and Bosingwa (no.17) on Saturday and suggests that, within this system, Bosingwa can be expected to mirror the threat of Cole on the opposite flank every time he is selected.

As the Passing Heatmaps below also show, 40% of all Bosingwa’s passes were made in his opponent’s final third of the pitch, whereas only 32% of all Cole’s were. Given that Bosingwa made 50 passes and Cole made 38, it’s fair to say there was more of a threat coming down Chelsea’s right flank for a change.

As a result, Bosingwa made 2 Key Passes that led to Goal Attempts on Saturday, and considering that Cole has made 10 Key Passes in 9 games, it’s food for thought for Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers, bearing in mind the right-back comes in at £5.6m compared to Cole’s £8.2m. However, for those Fantasy managers giving him the once over, a word of caution: there’s no doubt that Ancelotti will take time in easing him back into the fold, and it’s perhaps worth waiting to see how things unfold over the next couple of gameweeks before diving in. Once his fitness is full, though, it’s feasible that Bosingwa’s impact could see him become a first-team regular if Ancelotti’s comments are anything to go by.

Bosingwa also managed 3 shots at goal and was perhaps unlucky not to find the net, denied by Marcus Hahnemann on a couple of occasions. This was an amount beaten only by Didier Drogba on the day and considering Ashley Cole has had 6 shots at goal all season, it’s further indication of his attacking prowess.

Somewhat bizarrely, despite lagging behind Bosingwa in such critical areas, Cole was still awarded all 3 FPL Bonus Points but if the right-back continues to perform as he did at the weekend, there’s no reason why he won’t soon be offering the kind of returns that saw him bag 156 FPL points a couple of seasons ago.

Anyone care to have a look at my team and see how I can possibly fit Fabs in without any major losses? Id been planning Malouda > Fabs for weeks but im just not 100% anymore about losing the frenchman. I suppose it could just come down to which superstar do I rate least in my team. Help guys? Cheers.

Either that or downgrade Tevez for a 4 point hit to keep Malouda. I am wondering the same thing.

Bosingwa looked fit enough to me on Saturday, wouldn't be surprised if he's already a first team regular, Ferreira and even Ivanovic don't give the same threat going forward.

It's not all about the threat a full back carries though. Defending is equally important, and while Bosingwa is better offensively than Ivanovic and Ferreira, he is vastly inferior defensively.

Aside from the MOTD highlights I haven't actually seen any of the Wolves game, but in the 20 minutes he played against Villa it was noticeable how much more vulnerable we were on the counter attack, with Bosingwa and Cashley high up the pitch attacking.

Personally, I'd rather see Ivanovic at RB for the majority, certainly the harder ones, because he gives our defence much more balance. Although reading around Chelsea forums and the like, I'm beginning to think that I'm in a minority!

Balance is the sense that our defence isn't overly attacking, not symmetrical balance.

ahhh. 3 or 4 of your comments now make sense to me. i always wondered how you could think a grey hound one side and a body builder the either was balanced.
i agree with your thought that alex should always start at cb, just not that he's your best centre back. i'm in the minority camp that thinks terry is still bloody brilliant.

Jamsiep I agree with you regarding Bosingwa. I also think that we will lose a lot of CS's when Bosingwa plays. We are more vulnerable with him in the side, luckily we have Essien to cover. I still see him as a rotation threat. I would rather buy Jags, Kolarov, O Shea (maybe) for that money.

I wathed the whole game on saturday, and Wolves' best chance came from a cross to the far post where bosingwa lost his man and gave a free header. He is very poor defensively, which suggests Ivan will play in the tougher games.

I see it as Ivan > Bos > Ferriera

if ivanovic plays in the tough games and bosingwa in the easier games that is good for bosingwa owners who would bench him in the tough games anyway.

the way i saw it was ivanovic left his man and bosingwa did enough to put the striker off and stop him scoring that header. the amount of times doyle got inbetween terry and ivanovic was frightening considering just a couple of weeks earlier alcaraz made doyle and fletcher look like pub players

When he's playing, Bosingwa will inevitable score well and will be virtually impossible to ignore at that price.

The obvious question is just how much he's going to play. Luckily, given the relative difficulty of our next two fixtures (cue Liverpool related jokes) the need to get him in isn't particularly urgent, and would actually be an extremely risky transfer IMO.

After these games, we should have a good idea of how often he's going to play, and how worthwhile having him will be.

The watchlist on FPL was made for people like Bosingwa.

I see it as, if he's likely to play the easier home games, then why not have him. He'll more than likely score well in those games, with a clean sheet very likely and some attacking returns.

If you can afford to bench him for the away games, then why not, sure I know myself I'd rather my player playing the easier home games than the tough away games.

Fair enough. But with the way many people's teams are set up, they need at least one defender to play virtually every week - I certainly do with Alex.

Having Bosingwa in there may lead to having to play shitheads like Jara more often than you'd like to.

      Jamsiep,

I'd value your opinion on Malouda. I have him, but am considering swapping either him or Berbs (in a roundabout way) out for Fabs. I noticed you dropped Malouda some time ago. What was your reasoning and why should I consider dropping Malouda for Fabs?

At the time the only way I could get Nani (who is the only player in the game who it's inexcusable to have) was by getting rid of Malouda, so in some respects I had to get rid of Malouda! I also thought that Malouda was a risk of being rested for the Wolves game, which obviously didn't work out so well...

I'm struggling to make my mind up about Berbatov right now to be honest. He's been on my watchlist for a while but every week I'm becoming more and more put off by him. Hernandez scoring 3 in the last 2 league games may mean that when Potato Head is back fit, Berbatov may not necessarily always play, although he should play for the TOT and WLV games coming up.

Greghammer wrote an outstanding post earlier about why Malouda > Fabregas is probably the most sensible way of getting Fabregas into the side, and I agree with most of it. Chelsea's fixtures aren't especially good for a while now, and having Drogba and Malouda may be overkill, especially if it prevents you from getting Fabregas in.

Worth doubling up on Arsenal for next 2 weeks? One way of freeing cash for Fabs also.

Gerrard to Fabs and then for next 2 weeks maybe Tevez to Chamakh?

The safe option is just Konchesky to Coleman to free cash.

      Hi all

Already done my free transfer of the week: Crainey in for Rio. Made that in order to have founds to do a Nasri to Fabregas for 4 point hit.

The problem is that i made the Crainey move before the Man City-Arsenal (almost once Tuncay scored…) game and before the display of Nasri (wich i appreciated but…)
So, that leaves me with a few options now:

A- Do the supposed Nasri to Fabregas for 4 points hit
B – Malouda to Fabregas for 4 pt hit (keeping Nasri and is current run of form)
C – Tevez out (maybe injured, don’t know yet) to Drogba + Malouda to Fabregas, for 8 pt hit.
D – Do nothing, keep Nasri, Tevez and Malouda and hope Fabregas does nothing next week and Drogba as well.

      Need some help.
      Thanks

      Cheers.

PS – My current team is:
      Cech; Gilks
Coleman; Jara; Crainey; Emrique; R Johnson
      VdV; Nani; Malouda; Nasri; Albrighton
      Tevez; Berbatov; Carroll

      Sorry for re posting but:

      Afternoon lads,

I am thinking on doing the first 8 point hit this season. And I have 0.0 m budget to maneuver. The possible trades and reasons:

      - Malouda – Fabs – this was discussed a lot so we could skip this topic easily. I mean that the captain is most important in the FF so be it.

      - VDV out Nasri in – VDV has mun and bol next and Nasri has two very promising games. Plus VDV has CL fixtures where he must play so he could be rested at some point. Nasri technically could be rested also, but Arsenal are safe in CL so I think he surely will play in premier league. He is in incredible form, joint with Arsenal side so there could be goal fest in the next 2 and the Wolves game. So I will give 4 point advantage to VDV. I think they can be earned back from Mr. Nasri.

      - The last transfer is Konchesky out Jags in – I am not assured of Coleman starting role and jags has started with the bonuses. In next 6 they play 4 at home and Liv are conceding from everybody literally, so this 4 points could be back in 1,2 fixtures IMO. Plus Jags is keeper.

I appreciate opinion. This transfers will be done around Tuesday/Wednesday because I am short on cash. The only thing that worries me in this plan is Tevez injury. But I am way ahead in my mini league and wiling to take some risks.

      Cheers,

The problem is to me that people are forgetting that Walcott is fit now so will Nasri get all the play time if walcott plays in Champs league and plays well surly thats a problem for Nasri. I agree that he is playing well but looking at Arsenals midfield then I'm afraid to say out of most his place would be under threat.

With Lamps soon to be back then Essien will play a deeper role so Cashley and Bosingwa will be able to get into the attacking position that they like to be in. Bosingswa was a find and a half in his 1st season and I think once fit he will play.

marlon harewood: 3 goals in 326mins, MPG of 108.7
salomon kalou: 5 goals in 253mins, MPG of 50.6

minutes per goal doesnt mean much, the players with the highest mpg are usually super subs who score goals but rarely start

Doesn't take assists into account though. Drogba has 5 of them, and it also doesn't take bonus points into account.

Stats are always interesting but they rarely tell the whole picture.

Anyone else agree that it might be time for Tevez to leave our teams? Fixtures aren't exactly great and he's looking tired. Also, with Adebayor and Balotelli back, there is competition for places.

The only thing is, there aren't many alternatives out there, Hernandez maybe for 2 weeks, and probably Rooney long term but no others stick out.

      Thoughts?

Don't really think he's at risk of not starting, he's the captain afterall.

Having said that, I think I'm doing Tevez to Chamakh to free cash for Fabs. Daresay I'll look at getting him back soon after though.

Seems a bit rash to dump the captain and penalty taker from your team, especially considering he's scored the most goals out of all strikers over last 30 games. If you can stand having him in your team, don't know why you'd drop him now after just one bad week.

Everyone is expecting Arsenal to thrash both West Ham and Newcastle. Ok they will probably win both games but last season they only beat West Ham 2-0, 0-0 year before 2-0 year before that and If memory serves I think we won 1-0 the year before. I fully expect Arsenal to beat us, just don't take like an 8 point hit to get Fabs and Nasri in take a 4 point hit to get Fabs in yes, just don't throw all your eggs in the same basket.

The fab discussion seems to be rife this week. Here are my options incl. a riskier alternative… if you can pass any views on the 3 options that would be great.

      Do I..
      a) get rid of Bale and bring in Fab
      b) get rid of Nani or Malouda and bring in Fab
      c) get rid of Albrighton and bring in Nasri

Its a risk but i slightly favour c at the moment as it can be reversed hopefully without losing any value if Nasri’s form falls. C would also give me quality coverage of ARS, CHE, MU, TH and MC.

Hopefully can have a turn of fortune soon as not been greatest season so far!

I think Barton is good value for the whole season, look at him as this year's O'Hara. If you want to play 5 mids and bench one of your forwards every week, then go for it.

Depends if Tevez is injured. I don't really fancy a straight swap to Berbatov, would rather get someone like Odemwingie or Elmander, and then bring the likes of VDV into my midfield.

the midfields you can make with 1 big striker are mental. i'd be wary of odemwingie if i was you. even if he makes the squad for this week a bench spot is possible or a rusty start. hopefully the ian-evatt-able goal + 3bps instead

Need a budget striker to get in Fabs but not sure who to for. Odemwingie seems most logical but I quite fancy Kevin Davies, Bolton have some nice home fixtures coming up and he's always quite reliable. Davies > Elmander definitely for the home games for me also so Elmander is out the picture.
