Despite United’s endeavours, there’s still plenty at stake in the Premier League. While Alex Ferguson will take his side to Ewood Park in search of a solitary point that will kill Chelsea’s hopes once and for all, there’s still unfinished business in the jostle for European spots and the desperate scrap for survival.

Seeking out highly motivated players who are certain to duck the threat of rotation is the key for Fantasy Managers. That means lowering our sights – looking to the basement battle for budget mid-price assets, whilst backing form players who look immune to the tinkering.

The Defence

Once again clean sheets are a major issue. We surely have to look to attacking potential once again to help plug the gaping holes left by the fact that, right now, no backline in the land can seem to muster a shutout.

Joe Hart was the only keeper to keep things pristine over gameweek 36 and so his selection is unsurprising. It also allows me to overlook Aleksandar Kolarov, thus assuring that the Serb will at last deliver on his promise and find the net in Tuesday’s game against Stoke.

The defence in front of the City keeper is made up of players who offer realistic hopes of points at both ends of the field.

Everton’s Leighton Baines has a tough trip to West Brom that seems unlikely to return defensive profits, but the former Wigan man is such a factor in the flow of Everton’s attacking play – he warrants inclusion. The fact that he remains on spot-kicks only reinforces his place.

Baines lines up alongside Branislav Ivanovic who, with Jose Bosingwa out, looks a secure option in Carlo Ancelotti’s defence against a Newcastle side who will arrive at Stamford Bridge without an obvious goal threat. With Kevin Nolan suspended, Chelsea should have more than enough to keep the Magpies at arm’s reach and, regardless of the importance of the occasion, they look well placed for defensive returns. Ashley Cole and John Terry also look certain starters, but Ivanovic has looked the most likely to trouble opposition on set-plays.

Birmingham’s Roger Johnson will face Fulham at St Andrews in a game that promises to be a tight, edgy affair. I’m tipping the home side for a narrow victory and Johnson, as the defensive leader, looks a good option for Fantasy Premier League Bonus if Alex McLeish’s side can keep the Cottagers at bay.

United’s Nemanja Vidic claims the final spot – there’s little justification required here. The Serb will skipper United at Ewood needing just a point to claim the silverware. With Blackburn out of the relegation mire, a narrow and somewhat polite away win would seem the most likely outcome.

Wolves’ Stephen Ward takes the Scout Pick bench role, he is set to continue in the striker support role for Wolves at Sunderland although, with Kevin Doyle in contention, there remains some doubt over his pitch time.

The Midfield

The midfield quartet is based on the firm foundation provided by Chelsea’s Frank Lampard, a player who, in recent weeks, has justified his price tag and billing as a heavyweight Fantasy option. Chelsea’s motivation against Newcastle on Sunday, 24-hours after United are likely to have settled the title race, is in question, but I’m willing to take a punt on a convincing home win in front of the Stamford Bridge faithful. With Newcaslte without the influence of both Nolan and Chiek Tiote in midfield, it’s a brave Fantasy Manager who goes into the gameweek without some cover in the Chelsea attack. Lampard, given his current level of scoring and role at set-plays and penalties, looks the most assured option.

The Chelsea man is joined by three players fighting for survival this weekend. Charlie Adam, like Lampard, is hugely instrumental from both deadball situations and open play and will surely be at the fulcrum of affairs when Blackpool take on Bolton at Bloomfield Road. Likewise Birmingham’s Seb Larsson has grown in stature over recent weeks and has established himself as both a creator and scorer of goals. He will be monopolising set-pieces when Fulham arrive at St Andrews.

The final spot is a slight risk considering the slight injury doubt surrounding Charles N’Zogbia, but the Wigan winger is simply too good a prospect to ignore. Available for a modest price tag, N’Zogbia is a regular fetcher of Bonus Points and has added goals to his repertoire in recent weeks to help keep Wigan afloat. A big player for the big occasion, he will surely be West Ham’s chief tormentor at the DW Stadium this weekend.

The Forwards

There’s little need to shift resources up front right now. The form of Robin Van Persie, Luis Suarez and Peter Odemwingie is such that I’m struggling to see alternatives that warrant change.

Van Persie is just so influential – it’s hard to imagine an Arsenal victory go by without intervention from the Dutchman. Equally Suarez has settled in the Liverpool lineup and adopted the lead role in a string of supremely impressive attacking displays. His selection once again denies Dirk Kuyt a Scout Pick place – by all means double up on Liverpool at home to Spurs but, for me, Suarez offers sufficient cover on what looks set to be another three points for Kenny Dalglish’s side.

The are, once again, several strong alternatives up front. Daniel Sturridge was unfortunate to come out of last weekend’s defeat to Sunderland empty handed and will be a major concern for Blackpool this time around. Wolves’ Steven Fletcher goes to Sunderland with four goals in his last four appearances, while Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega was a “Fantasy Island Risk” in this week’s podcast and, along with N’Zogbia, will be the Latics’ key man against the Hammers.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm thinking of leaving the team and having 2 transfers for GW38:

    Foster (Begovic)
    Luiz Terry Coleman (Simpson Kelly)
    Yaya Nani Silva Walcott (VDV)
    Odem Rooney RVP(c)

    Bank: Naff all

Do you think I should leave it for this week? NZogbia is looking like the best player to bring in, probs for Silva as he's the most likely to be dropped, but there's still a chance of both Yaya and Silva playing.

Can't decide my lineup, I want to start at least 13 of them!

    Foster (Boaz Myhill)

Fabio, Luiz, R Johnson, Baines (Wheater)

Nani, Maxi Rodriguez, N'Zogbia, Silva (Van der Vaart)

    Van Persie, Suarez (Sturridge)

Am currently sitting on this 4-4-2, but was initially going to play a 3-5-2 with VdV in and Johnson on the bench.

Also not sure whether or not to play Sturridge, as he's been on hot form since January and, although he didn't score last week, came very, very close.

Anyone with any thoughts more decisive than my own?

It's your call. N'Zogbia will either get a goal or an assist, but not both. Lampard could get nothing, or he could get a few goals and assists. He's been very hot and very cold this season, to be honest.

Depends if you're in a position where you want to go steady (Big Charles) or you want to take a gamble to climb the leagues (Lamps).

    Couple of questions...

Got a defence of Baines, Luiz, Kolarov, Johnson, Walker. Normally given the scenario I'd play Baines, Luiz/Kolarov and Johnson, but problem is my main s/l rival who's only a few points back has Baines, Luiz and Kolarov and will likely play all 3. So do I match him up or take the gamble Johnson outscores them?

Second question. I need to get Lamps in and it requires a points hit. My rival has VDV and will play him next week. Do I:

    1. Swap Nani and VDV for Lamps and N'Zogbia, with £0.2m spare, or

    2. Keep VDV to negate his score next week, and do Nani and Silva out for Lamps and Seb Larsson?

    Cheers.

due to not wanting to upset science boy i will name my players correctly. ive taken a 4pointer already...

is it worth luiz > ivanovich for 8?

      Hart

      Luiz, Hangeland, Cahill

      Lampard, Adam, Kuyt, Nzogbia

      Rvp, Drogba, Odem

      (VDV, kelly, dawson)

im kinda confident that im good to go but scared that dawson might bring in the minuses... any opinions? thanks chaps!

I can't see it, Jay. Of course Ivan might score, but the likeliest best case would be 6 points. Minus 4. Which gives you 2. I'd leave it be.

Silva for me, especially if it frees up dough for a grand final transfer

Yeah, it will free up some cash for next week.
Thinking about Silva - Sessegnon tonight, cant wait for tomorrow since i will probably be to drunk to make a transfer then.
Need a serious differential in my mini league, and looks like Sessegnon can get some goals against Wolves and West Ham as lone striker for Sunderland.. Penaltys also i think :s

Tough choice there. Would the extra money make a difference by transferring out Silva rather than Toure?

I'd say keep Toure, if for no other reason that it seems that he is one of the immovable pieces in the lineup...he always plays...

I don't trust the Arsenal defense at all. I'd probably say Skrtel since there is always a chance that he could score on a set piece.

              hey lads,
badly in need of some help. I am 12 points ahead in my league after being 80 behind so need to stay in front now!

              my team is as follows
              Foster (al habsi)
              Luiz, hanegland, jagielka (ridgewell, foley)
              lampard, adam, vdv, silva, kuyt
              suarez odem (zamora)

any transfers stand out? silva out? maybe VDV out? how does my defence look? luiz is my major concern?

              thanks for the help

I feel for your situation. I'm almost exactly in the same situation (losing ground in my league). I think that your MF looks strong; I wouldn't mess with that at all. And if you're going with a 3-5-2, your two up front are good as well. I'd say shore up the defense (although with what is the question). That's just me, though. But I'm not sure that your MF would be the place that I started to fix...

was just worried about silva? rotation risk. and with zamora a doubt, automatic subs would turn to my defensive back-ups which are poor. unless i change silva for a guaranteed starter? maybe valencia who's in form? or nzogbia? what u think? thanks for this

I see the logic...I'd just be concerned about the fact that Luiz might not play either, thus activating our backups there anyway. But, then again, it may be another week where there aren't many clean sheets going around...Here's another thought, though, what about transferring out Zamora for another striker with an advantageous fixture? Do you have any extra cash. Then you could go with a 3-4-3 rather than a 3-5-2 if you're worried about rotation...

If Luiz doesn't play, he'll get subbed out.

If Silva doesn't play, he'll come on for the last 10 minutes and get you a point. Rather than being replaced by a player on your bench who may do better.
