The Dugout Discussion kicks into gear for five more fixtures of our penultimate gameweek. unfortunately today’s television broadcasts are aimed in the direction of the only two games with “nothing left to play for” (don’t blame them too much, they have to make these commitments months in advance).

Later today Arsenal will have their final home game of another barren season versus Aston Villa for our viewing pleasure. Elsewhere in the four o’clock kick-offs Liverpool and Spurs will jostle for fifth place and a spot in the Europa league, West Ham travel to Wigan needing a victory for any faint hope of survival this year. That may not even be enough, if Birmingham can get just a point at home to Fulham at the same time then The Hammers are Championship bound.

But first we’ve got Chelsea playing host to Newcastle in a dead rubber fixture. Ancelotti keeps his word and Torres starts (alongside Nicolas Anelka and Yossi Benayoun) with Josh McEachran, Alex and Ramires also coming in. Alan Pardew keeps to his word and rests Cheikh Tiote for the remainder of the season to avoid a record 15 yellow cards and 3 game ban. Line-ups in full are…

Chelsea XI: Cech; Ivanovic, Terry, Alex, Cole; Ramires, Lampard, McEachran; Benayoun, Torres, Anelka

Newcastle XI: Krul; Simpson, S Taylor, Coloccini, Enrique; Gutierrez, Barton, R Taylor, Ferguson; Ameobi, Lovenkrands

The Dugout Discussion will be open through all the days games until young Greghammer gets teary eyed as the Fantasy Premier League bonus points roll in. Whether that’s through seeing his side getting relegated or captaining Thomas Vermaelen (or both) is yet to be seen.

Want to see some changes with defence next year, it's becoming pointless spending money on defenders when there are so few cleanies.

        Stuff like that.

5 or 6 arial duels won, 1 point.

The solution is to not spend money on defenders.
They could make it more appealing to get defenders by giving out points for clearances/tackles etc... but it would be a minefield.
Bonus points are enough in my opinion.

I remember the days when you could play 2-5-3.

It didnt work as everyone just setup with a Liverpool, Chelsea and United defender/goalie and then 3 of the cheapest defenders available.

It would just be like that all over again.

City def, United, def, Chelsea keeper, QPR, Bolton, Blackpool 4.0 million defs.

Hmmm ... but the top sides get 15 (ish) clean sheets a season.

You don't get many strikers scoring that many goals for the sort of price you get a defender for.

I still think an expensive defence is the best strategy.

The only conclusion you can really draw from today's game is that Wenger needs to influence referees better, like Ferguson does. You wouldn't have seen those kind of decisions go aganst the home team at Old Trafford or Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal are a big team, and whether its right or wrong, they should play that game.

Goals are good and all, but Darren Bent could never be a regular in a team finishing higher than mid table. Typical day at the office today, scored two goals out of nothing but was completely unable to help Aston Villa's play in any way what so ever afterwards. The modern striker has to offer more in my opinion.

I can see your point, as a Villa fan who has watched all of his appearances he does do very little other than put it in the net.
His turn of pace isn't great and doesn't hold it up brilliantly.

I guess the counter argument would be - how many goals would he score at Man Utd / Chelsea? He plays off the shoulder better than most and is cracking in the air. Has also got things going for England.

Ok, flopped at Tottenham but I would see as that as a bit of an anomaly as Harry treated him very poorly.

Not sure what point I am trying to make here, I guess more observations.

You could ask how many goals Bent would score for Man United / Chelsea, but a better question is probably whether those teams would score more goals overall with Bent in the team than they do now. That's what really matters at the end of the day.

If you have a poacher like Bent up front and the team is set up primarily to create chances for him then of course he'll probably score a lot of goals. That doesn't mean the team will be better off playing that way, though.

It was the downfall. Going from free-flowing and free-scoring football to "lump it up to the £35million bloke" is too much of a change in a week.

Next season, Liverpool should have 2 different formations that depend on opponent.

I think Away from Home or v the big 5 clubs at home they should play this formation -

      Back 5
      Mierles Lucas Gerrard
      Suarez Kuyt Maxi

and at Home to the other teams (or v poor teams away from Anfield) this -

      Back 5
      Mierles Gerrard
      Suarez Kuyt Carroll Maxi

I think Liverpool will sign a winger to replace Maxi but the same formation would still stand.

In essence, play Carroll at home v poor opponents who won't get forward much.

Did King play then? That could be the reason.

    my transfers.

    Young > Nzogbia : PASS

    Bent > Suarez : FAIL

Should have just left it at the first one.

Darren bent was the most transferred out striker this week and then scores a brace, with 3baps to come.
Suarez was one of the most transferred in strikers and get 1 point.
