The Dugout Discussion kicks into gear for five more fixtures of our penultimate gameweek. unfortunately today’s television broadcasts are aimed in the direction of the only two games with “nothing left to play for” (don’t blame them too much, they have to make these commitments months in advance).

Later today Arsenal will have their final home game of another barren season versus Aston Villa for our viewing pleasure. Elsewhere in the four o’clock kick-offs Liverpool and Spurs will jostle for fifth place and a spot in the Europa league, West Ham travel to Wigan needing a victory for any faint hope of survival this year. That may not even be enough, if Birmingham can get just a point at home to Fulham at the same time then The Hammers are Championship bound.

But first we’ve got Chelsea playing host to Newcastle in a dead rubber fixture. Ancelotti keeps his word and Torres starts (alongside Nicolas Anelka and Yossi Benayoun) with Josh McEachran, Alex and Ramires also coming in. Alan Pardew keeps to his word and rests Cheikh Tiote for the remainder of the season to avoid a record 15 yellow cards and 3 game ban. Line-ups in full are…

Chelsea XI: Cech; Ivanovic, Terry, Alex, Cole; Ramires, Lampard, McEachran; Benayoun, Torres, Anelka

Newcastle XI: Krul; Simpson, S Taylor, Coloccini, Enrique; Gutierrez, Barton, R Taylor, Ferguson; Ameobi, Lovenkrands

The Dugout Discussion will be open through all the days games until young Greghammer gets teary eyed as the Fantasy Premier League bonus points roll in. Whether that’s through seeing his side getting relegated or captaining Thomas Vermaelen (or both) is yet to be seen.

Only down to 24k. Not really too bothered about rank but thought I'd be able to finish in the top 20k. A little bit annoyed that I most probably won't be.

Need big scores from Lescott and Silva on Tuesday night! 🙂

Lol yep. In fairness, I was even luckier with the Hangeland sub than you think. I took a hit to bring Ivanovic in after Mark's Scout Picks, I thought Chelsea's CS prospects were too good to miss out on. I figured if Luiz didn't play I'd at least have one Chelsea defender.

I would have played Hangeland had I not made that transfer.

Way to go, I'll wave cheerfully and respectfully as you roar past me on Tuesday night in the rankings, unless Huth goes absolutely bat****.

Hangeland, ....but what was the thinking on playing Carr-- I am a first year player and I always play the taller defender-- LOL.

Plus you unloaded Baines to get Hangeland- gutsy, smart move. Well played, nice going.

I put a tenner on Van Persie being top scorer a few weeks ago when he was 20/1, thinking I was the bees knees. Berbatov wasn't gona start, Tevez was injured, I was sure he'd do well. What a failure that was.

Was a good bet at those odds, he could have had more and obviously 20/1 plays won't come in often.

He could easily have had 3 today for example

Forgetting FPL for a while, the final games next Sunday are going to be fascinating edge-of-seat stuff. Relegation beckons for two out of five teams who are separated by a mere point - and the two relatively "safe" teams on 40 points (Wolves and Blackburn) meet at Molineux.

Predictions for the remaining two relegation places, anyone?

Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan all have tough games. Birmingham seem to have the worst deal, away to Tottenham. Blackpool are playing United, but this is a United team who have already won the title and are looking towards the Champions League final. Stoke at home are going to be pretty tough for Wigan too.

      I'm gona say.....Birmingham and Blackburn...

Baggies fan - take a look at the fixtures again.

Wolves 10-1 to go down; all the others are odds on; for example:

          - Wolves get a draw; 2 of Birmingham, Blackpool and Wigan have to win away against teams that have collectively only lost 5 games at home all season (ManU 0; Spurs 1; Stoke 4)
          - Wigan get a point at Stoke; Wolves lose by 3 goals = Wolves above Wigan on goals scored
          - Spurs need a win to secure a Europa league spot; Blues won once away all season; Blues get a point at Spurs; Wolves lose by 1 goal = Wolves above Blues on goals scored

Birmingham and Wigan to go down...

It really depends on the team that Ferguson puts out. He could easily play Owen and Bebe and save all three of his main strikers, for example. I'm certainly keeping Adam in my FPL team for GW38.

I'm sure I speak for everyone (well me) when I say that Ya Ya must be rested this weekend....keen to see Bent's pts come off my bench to propel me beyond the 90pt mark.

Ps - I love you Brede.

pps - still laughing at applebonkers' dimitardis post a couple of days ago. Very tempted to hop aboard the Bulgarian's time travel adventures back to 2010 as well.

I can imagine when you have 13 points sitting on the bench but he did look knackered at the end of the final so there's still hope that he might be rested.

the silver cloud is that I've extended by mini league lead from 1 to 39 ...just annoyed that the first week I bench Bent in weeks and he scores a brace in a tough fixture. The moral...in Bent we trust.

Can we all agree on this?
Aston Villa exploited a couple of key moments rightly earned, but the ref basically gave them the game. A denied penalty, a phantom call on RVP to deny an obvious goalscoring opportunity and twice Michael Oliver didn't hand a yellow to a previously carded player to prevent a sendoff to either of those two Aston Villa defenders. Worst of all, the goal being called back. The second half was a disgrace.

I think that we can all agree Arsenal have underachieved this season...

RVP needs a decent team around him and he could get 30 goals a season

come off it, half their starting XI was injured for long periods of a time, lost all three senior goalkeepers at one point. Yea they need improvement, but a decent team? Let's remember who were talking about. They need a new left winger and a centerback.

I don't like to use it as an excuse because Arsenal need some serious changes, but that game was nonsense, and then the assistant coach actually had the balls to say they should have been 4 up.

yep. The disallowed goal wasn't that bad imo. Bent had a similar one ruled out a few weeks ago and Chamakh is climbing on Walker with both his hands on Walker's shoulders. Soft but not scandalous.
The others were poor decisions though. Still doesn't change the fact that Arsenal made Villa look like Barcelona for 25 mins

Yea, nevermind that three of the starting XI were out, two second-stringers and a CB who hasn't played since august is in the backline. Bent delivered that game to Aston Villa. How many shots on goal did Villa have in the second? One? maybe two?

Ref denied Arsenal a point, but Arsenal's defence gave away 2 soft goals which matters as much if not more.
