Here's a funny footballing story I've just read about Grenada and Barbados in 1994.

Barbados needed to beat Grenada by two goals in the last group game of the Shell Caribbean Cup in order to reach the final. A draw after 90 minutes would mean extra time, while anything less than winning by two goals would see Grenada go through. However, organisers had decided that in the case of extra time a Golden Goal would count as two goals. Barbados went 2-0 up early on, but Grenada made it 2-1 in the 83rd minute, meaning Barbados would be knocked out unless they scored a goal - yes, at either end. One Barbados striker realised his side were unlikely to score another goal with only a few minutes to go and Grenada parking the bus, so decided their best chance of winning was to take the game into extra time - so he promptly hammered home past his own stunned keeper to make it 2-2. Grenada now needed to score a goal at either end to avoid extra time, so turned and headed for their own net. Barbados anticipated this and rushed to defend the Grenada goal (in addition to their own!) until the whistle went for extra time. Barbados were eventually rewarded for their quick thinking, scoring the winner four minutes into extra time, which sent them into the final.

Holy cow ... where do you get this stuff ... thats a fantastic read.

Not entirely sure that the organisers saying a golden goal counts for two is necessarily fair ... but then it is the Carribbean .... they probably drank rum and had a sleep at half time.

I don't understand how Grenada managed to fail in scoring in their own goal after it went 2-2...

Surely they would just kick it back to their keeper and he'd let it in... if they did that Barbados players couldn't have defended that, surely?!

      Funny story though...

You can pass back to the keeper as long as he doesn't pick it up...

But if the keeper got the ball in his hands legally, then he could just walk it in...

If they booted it back to the keeper from kick of, he could just let it go through his legs...

Ridiculous that they failed to do that....

I think they fail to figure that out when they kickoff at 2-2. When they realised that they also need to score own goals, Barbados players had already started defending on both ends.

Okay but I still dont get it. How would a 2-2 draw send them into extra time and a 2-1 win knock them out? Surely if another team was involved it would go down as a draw. And if it was head to head, Grenada would win. What was the format?

Groups of 3, so 3 matches each. Each match had to have a win for one team or the other. So if it was a draw there was extra time where the was a 2-goal golden goal. Odd to say the least. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_Caribbean_Cup

Anyone remember back in 90s MLS when, if the match ended in a draw, instead of doing penalties (or just ending the match as a draw and giving each team a point), they'd do some crazy one-on-one thing, where the attacker starts at the halfway line, could take as many touches as he wanted, but had to score within however many seconds?

I thin so yes. Who knows how fit Kun/Silva/Yaya is. The Everton game is crucial and I'm not so sure Citeh will win it. It's going to take a lot out of them.

The again, look at last 5 games at home for Citeh vs Villa:

              Played 5
              City: 5
              Goals for: 19
              Goals against: 2

Yes Everton our City's bogey, but they are without Barry, Dis and Jag doubtfull. Miralles out also. Silva may be back, Aguerro not quite on song but getting there.
Big ask for Everton, especially as the crowd don't particularly want to hand the title to City, and the fact that is very improbable they'll qualify for champs league.
It's got City win all over it for me but we wouldn't be City if we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot.

Don't like him either, but simply I just don't have funds for a direct switch to the likes of Ramsey, and still doubt that dropping a DGW player for a -4 is a way to go...
He will become Sterling for the last game if Liverpool beats Palace and City wins both DGW games.

Not well enough to be considered the 3rd best player in the world anyway, Modric was another league ahead of him last night, and Iniesta is miles better than Ribery.. As is Zlatan, even Suarez and Rooney would have as much of a case if not more than Ribery. He's a flat track bully that demolishes teams in the bundesliga but thats it..

"Flat track bully". Ronaldo, prior to this, has always disappeared in CL semi finals. As well as in all big matches for Portugal. Iniesta has tradition to play well in big games, but was Barca's worst player last year when Bayern "flat track bullies" bullied the "flat track" Barcelona 7-0 and did nothing this year either against Atletico. Messi and Ronaldo have specialised on scoring gazillion goals against La Liga's second division rate teams. Suarez - a flat track bully if any - has only played one CL group stage during which he did very little. All top players will eventually be flat track bullies, because they will do a lot against weaker teams, but cannot do that amazingly much against other top players. There will always be that difference.

Ribéry, however, was the star of the team that destroyed Barcelona last season. If you only read scoring charts, you will not see what he does, you will not see his importance, because he is a player who get his team past the opposition defence, who creates attack, and there are other players like Müller and Robben, and formerly Gomez, who go for those scoring chances. It is no wonder that it matters very little who Bayern plays upfront, he wil always score loads. When it was Gomez, some people were actually fooled to think that Gomez is a great forward. 😆 Pizarro scores ridiculously well as their striker. We will soon see what an actually great forward can do there when Lewandowski joins the club.

And Rooney? Come fecking on.... guy has no international merits whatsoever.

You obviously haven't seen much then. For example, last season's CL final. There are currently in world only three players who go to challenge three defenders in well organised defence and come out as winners more often than not, and those are Ribéry, Messi and Neymar. Well the last one doesn't usually win it these days. Maybe he has still a lot to learn about European defences. But he has shown he can do it.

Short answer: to me, only Yaya and Zlatan out of those. Robben is obvious: less important to Bayern than Ribéry, and try to recall, not long ago, he was outright lousy.

This whole debate is another moment showing the over focus on Premier League, Real Madrid and Barcelona. Players in these teams are way overrated relative to players outside them. Ribéry was the outstanding player of season 2012-2013, and still last Autumn. There's no denial of that if you watched him play, the stuff he did day-in day-out, amazing. People here say they have never seen him play well, because they watch Ronaldo and Suarez score quadruple against Almeria and Norwich and then wonder why Ribéry doesn't do that against Chelsea or Dortmund in CL final.

I tend to agree on Zlatan, because he is amazing. your other non Real, Barca or PL player is Robben who is having a good spell while Ribéry is having a bad one, and is still les important to Bayern's game than Ribéry. Think about last year then, when Ribéry was having a good spell. Robben is made functional in Bayern by two moves: 1) he doesn't come down to defence; 2) Ribéry and whoever is in the middle come strongly to his support on right side when ball is there, so there are always so many passing options for him that the opponent cannot just take away his cut inside move. They can usually only play one defender against him, and Robben's touch is so smooth that the defender will have hard time to follow it. Whenever the opponent can get another player to secure behind the in-cutting full back, then Robben can't do this move.

One thing yet: I don't understand where are you coming from with Iniesta. They guy has been mediocre, at best, for two seasons now. I could easily list 20 players in La Liga better than Iniesta this season and the previous one. Even 5 in Barcelona, any day.

I'll admit I don't watch German football, only English and Spanish.

I've always thought that Ribery must be doing something special in the German league because I've never seen him excel for France or in the CL. He doesn't do it on the big stage as much as the 3rd best player in the world should, so that leads me to believe he's a bit of a flat track bully who is great against decent teams but can't do much against world class defenders.

The reason I'd prefer Iniesta is that he's the only person in that team with the ball control close to Messi, he's a better dribbler than Neymar (just not as flashy, he focuses on ball possession) and he can pass the ball as well as he can shoot it. He also shows up in the biggest games (always plays well vs Madrid, World Cup Final, Chelsea game a few years ago, etc.).
Iniesta is massively underrated and always has been, he was better than everyone in the world bar Messi/Ronaldo a few years ago.

I agree there's a bias towards the English league and Madrid/Barca, but that's because most of the best players play there, there's a handful in the top Italian teams, there's PSG, and there's Bayern/Dortmund, but even if Suarez, Aguero and Yaya played for Marseille, I'd still have them in my team over Ribery..

The player playing Messi's false9 role in Bayern is not Ribéry, it is Mandzukic. Ribéry is not the player in Bayern to finish it all off, he is the player who creates the attacks in the first place. Bayern does not play scoring chances for Ribéry like Real and Barcelona play for Ronaldo and Messi respectively, Ribéry plays them for other Bayern players. Very different role.

Fully agree that Real would do better by replacing Pepe with Varane. Pepe is not a brilliant defender. He's a huge liability and a guy who should be getting more red cards than that hot head Ramos. Not so much because he is hot head, but because he is dirty. In fact, he seems much more a provocator than a hot head, he doesn't seem to get so provocated himself, he just does dirty things all the time. Players like that are very bad for the image of their team. Much more so than hot heads like Ramos who are not dirty cheats but just can't control their emotions.

Pepe used to be the one always being provoked by everyone and he had the worst anger issues in the league, but then he went for anger management classes and now he's the worst provoker out there! Constantly just trying to wind up opponents, but it's working for us at the moment, he's playing well, but it only takes one missed rash interception or one slip and he's let a goal in..
              Such a liability.

Varane is the next best defender in world football, such an absolutely class act.

That anger management explains it well. But functioning or not, Pepe is a disgrace. I could never support a player like that.

Agree on Varane. He was immense when Mourinho was there. That header against Barcelona, or more the jump practically without pacing was awesome. Whatever happened with him and Ancelotti is beyond me. Whenever seldom Varane plays, he usually has to play the wrong side even and it doesn't seem to work as well as it did with Mou. Hopefully he will soon replace Pepe, because this Real team is turning out pretty enjoyable.

Di Maria is an absolute hero, he gives so much for the team and he's absolutely quality, miles ahead of Isco.

I don't know how we''re going to set up in the final, we have Pepe, Illara, Casemiro, Modric and Isco all able to play in CM.
Illaramendi is the closest thing to Alonso but I'm not sure if he's ready so it will probably be one of Pepe or Isco, depending on how attacking Ancellotti wants to play.. Probably Pepe.

        Alonso is such a loss..

I think Giaccherini is staking a claim for a start, could be a nice differential for the double!

Palace are more solid now, but they're still Palace, not Chelsea. Liverpool need to win possibly on goal difference so I expect then to throw the bus at Palace after having to endure the parked bus at Anfield.

Yep, and I fully expect Liverpool to win 🙂 but Pulis doesn't ever seem to get thrashed and Palace haven't let in any more than 2 goals in a game at home this year, 0-2 or 0-3 imo.

I sold Suarez because I need a differential towards my opponent. If I don't beat him then it doesn't matter by how much he wins.

Suarez did indeed score against CPL last time (1 goal) so he may very well do it again, I'm just hoping my DGW striker will get more points than my opponent does with his.

If I hadn't needed to catch up I probably would have kept Suarez.

True, we have similar possession stats, but what we do with the ball is completely different to what Chelsea do with the ball. We don't time waste at all and we don't just clear our lines giving it right back to them.

We have less possession because that's just how Barca play, against everyone.

              Very simple conclusions there...

Jose plays extremely boring tactics, he sets up to stop football, which is a bore to watch.

There is no place in football for that.

Fans dont travel to games to watch players lay on the pitch wasting time.

Imagine ,if he was Liverpool manager he would have settled for 0-0 and played boring football and would have won the league .
Liverpool could still win the league but this whining and anti-football tag irritates me

Mou used those tactics for Liverpool match only ,even City didn't complain this much when they lost at etihad.

PS: Mourinho gets job done against big teams and that's the only thing matters.Being a UTD fan I would have loved to see Moyes employing similar tactics in City And Pool home games as he did in BM CL game .

Pity he cant do it against small teams.

Chelsea would be kicking themselves for not winning the league this season after having tremendous record against top 8 teams .

PS:Not a Chelsea fan here ,would have liked arsenal to win though .

He sets up to play football as the situation and available resources dictate. I have no problem with that. Any time anyone trots out the "anti-football" line I get a violent rash all over my body.

Someone asked what sort of a result Mourinho would have got had he been in charge of the Bayern team yesterday. Much as I dislike this type of speculation, it's hard to imagine him shipping two easy set-piece headers and leaving the back as woefully exposed as it was.

    Changes needed for this GW?

    Harper

    Wilson - Zab - Evra

    Mata - Sterling - Eriksen - Ramsey

    Suarez - Rooney - Aguero

    (Boruc - Lallana - Chester - Coleman)

    Should I do: Lallana + Eriksen -> Yaya + Amalfitano (-8)??

Will Yaya outscore Eriksen by 8 over the 2 games?

      I'd say yes.
