Injuries

Since the conclusion of Gameweek Nine, there’s been plenty of news rolling out of Premier League sources and it’s often shared common ground. Managers, and players alike, are taking the opportunity to sing the praises of their team-mates while others are left lamenting their luck with injuries as the BUPA insurance premiums take a battering…

In the wake of him taking the largest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul this gameweek, unsurprisingly Arsene Wenger has taken the time to sing the praises of his mercurial french talent Samir Nasri…

“He is becoming more efficient. I think he has become stronger physically and you judge a player with his numbers…He is quite a complete player because he can run with the ball, he is quick and he is a clinical finisher now. I believe we have a great player in him now…At 23 years old your career starts at the top level.”

Clearly enthusiastic words from the Frenchman on his compatriot and certainly not without merit either. Samir Nasri put in an imperious performance with his seventh goal in seven games, and on the back of it, with two promising home games in a row on the horizon, his investment will likely rocket in the coming days too. It will be interesting to see if Nasri’s rise will temper early investment in Cesc Fabregas who is of course back firmly on the radar following his start at Eastlands.

Across the way at West Ham, Avram Grant will be crossing his fingers on two of his key figures as both Matthew Upson and Frederic Piquionne await a prognosis on recent ailments. The centre-back was forced to leave the field with a hamstring injury and Piquionne, a key figure for West Ham to date, also purportedly picked up a knock of his own at the weekend.

After McCleish’s employment of him at the tip of a new diamond formation managed to flummox Blackpool at the weekend, early news yesterday indicated that Alexander Hleb would be an early injury doubt for the coming week. That train of thought has been quickly dispelled and the on loan Belarus international is now looking good to make the derby game with Aston Villa…

“We think he had a bit of cramp as well and that shows that he’s not fully match fit yet. But he showed great signs of his ability at the weekend with some great runs forward and some deft change of feet and he’ll be an asset to us if we can get him in that kind of form. He’s not going to make the cup tie but he should be okay for the Villa game.”

Aston Villa, the opponents in the aforementioned Birmingham derby, have however been less lucky on the injury front and were rocked by the news that their captain Stiliyan Petrov is predicted to be out for at least two months, not good news. This however will open up the opportunity for one of Steve Sidwell, Steven Ireland or Marc Albrighton to step into the void in the Villa XI, perhaps aligning themselves alongside a revitalised Nigel Reo-Coker.

Staying in our second city still and we got a few updates on the state of affairs in the West Brom squad, as well as the chance for manager Di Matteo to single out one of his midfielders for praise. Starting with their Nigerian striker, he had to say

“”We want Peter back as soon as possible but we don’t want to rush him back and then lose him for a long time. We want him to be back in training this week. That is our aim but we will know more later this week.”

With Odemwingie taking to the Premier League like a duck to water upon his arrival, Baggies fans will want to see him back as soon as possible. Though with the player still as of yet not even back in training and with the words of caution above, he has to already be marked as a clear doubt once more ahead of the trip to Blackpool next Monday. Chris Brunt however will likely be around for this fixture if all goes to plan, and he remains a key figure with Di Matteo lavishing praise his way…

“He has become a tremendous asset for us. He’s the kind of player that every week gives you an eight out of ten performance. He is somebody you could go to war with at your side.”

40 FPL points (6,5,6,5,11,7) in his last six gameweeks (including a missed penalty too) are certainly a level of proof on the eight out of ten performances as Lieutenant Brunt dished out the corporal punishment on his opponents. Di Matteo also confirmed that Jonas Olsson (achilles) and Marc Antoine Fortuné (ankle) are to undergo scans on injuries picked up against Fulham forcing them to both leave the field after 53 minutes.

Also lasting a little over fifty minutes at the weekend was Carlos Tevez who picked up a knock in Man City’s 3-0 defeat at home to Arsenal at the weekend, the formative news provided after the final whistle by his manager was positive, as we await a full diagnosis hopefully to come later in the week…

“We don’t think it is a bad one, he took a knock in a muscle in the second half but it should be OK”

Young Irish midfielder James McCarthy has been ruled out for 8-10 weeks after picking up ankle ligament damage in the game against Bolton at the weekend. His absence over the coming months will likely open up a spot for one of Mohammed Diame, fellow Hamilton graduate James McArthur or Tom Cleverley to fill the breach. Emmerson Boyce has also been confirmed out for the next two weeks or so, with Ronnie Stam likely to get the nod in his absence.

Simon Mignolet has been playing out of his skin according to manager Steve Bruce, who has warned Craig Gordon that he may yet still have a long wait to regain his place as Sunderland’s number one if the young Belgian keeper can carry on as he has been doing. The same can be said for the likes of John Mensah, Cristian Riveros and even £13m signing Asamoah Gyan, who have all had pitch-time restricted lately due to the form shown by the current Sunderland starting XI.

And finally, not long after picking up their point at White Hart Lane on Saturday the early news rolling out of the Everton camp was that absentee Mikel Arteta “will probably be fit” for the visit of Stoke this coming Saturday. David Moyes also confirmed that Jack Rodwell is set to return to training soon while he expects a boost from getting another full weeks training in the bag for recent returnee Louis Saha.

I've got both Foster & Robinson and can't see either keeping a clean sheet - Foster will likely be my choice though.

It's pretty much the same as everyone else's so on behalf of everyone, I hope so! Robinson at home and picking up BPs of late I would say just edges it out of those two keepers.

    Robinson Stockdale
    Stam Williamson Elmohamady Alex Dann
N'Zogbia S Davies Nani Arshavin Malouda
    Drogba Tevez Carroll
    1.5 in bank

Can do either (albeit for 4 point hit)
    A) Arshavin+Davies > Fabregas + Ferguson (any 4.4)
    B) Tevez+Davies > Fabregas + Odemwingie

If I am doing A I think I need to act fast as the meerkat is on the slide pretty rapidly and I can only afford it if no price changes. All opinions massively appreciated.

bent does the same to williamson, williamson 1pt.
12pts from 3 cheap players, not bad imo.

He's 3.9, as I said before it would be very hard to predict which one of Williamson, Taylor and Campbell would partner Colocinni. I'd stay away from all three because of that
As for Donovan, never say never. Look at the Gosling saga, I'd expect him to rejoin Everton though I wouldn't be overly shocked if sneaky agents stuck their slimy paws in on the deal.

No chance unless massive drop in form. The three nailed on starters will be

            Enrique......Coloccini...A.N.Other.....Simpson

Simpson offers no less in terms of goals or assists than Enrique so is a logical signing thanks to his pittance price.

Might finally be ridding me team of that prize plonker Perch this week for your hero mr simpson. Logic says i should get rid of Cleverley for Brunt, but my stubbornness isn't having any of it. Actually Logic says i shouldn't take a hit at all, but logic very rarely wins out.

Now I'd like to just say for the record Simpson is not my hero, I think he is a decent player but I am not drooling over his ability like I would Tiote. He's the logical choice if you want a Toon defender, thats about it.
You and your Cleverley, you are like Luke Skywalker putting sentimentality in place of power. Bin him, you know you should 🙂

Thoughts on my 11 for this week?

    1: Foster

    2: Coleman

    3: Elmohamady

    4: Cole A

    5: Fabregas
    (C)

    6: Van der Vaart

    7: Nani

    8: Adam

    9: Drogba

    10: Tevez

    11: Elmander

My team took an 8 point hit to do

    Berbs > Elmander
    Konchesky > Ashley Cole

Can't handle Ashley Cole getting 9 every week and not having him, I think every manager on here should be finding a way to get him in, his point hauls/long term investment/how strong his team is/ makes him insanely valuable. Probably the most valuable player in the game at the moment in my opinion.

I don't believe Wigan will struggle against Fulham and BBurn. Bolton have good fixtures just because they are at home? Not buying that, they have 3 much harder fixtures coming up than Wigan imo.

Clev is bench fodder, but giving my team name, i have to have the little swine. Plus he's awesome.

    Hart/(Foster)
    ACole/Elmo/Williamson/(ShawX/Jones)
    Fabs(c)/Malouda/Nani/Adam/Nolan
    Drogba/Odemwingie(Carroll)

Carool to start if Odem not fit
    ANy ides for next week?

I would be playing Carroll over Odemwingie regardless, Carroll scored at the weekend, it's a derby this weekend with Sunderland, Odemwingie would be playing away to a resolute and confident Blackpool.

Nice midfield, still want news on Adam myself, next week Shawcross OUT Coleman in is perfect

Planned Malouda OUT Fabregas IN this week, to give team of:

    Foster
    Simpson/Elmo/Boateng
    Nani/VDV/Fabregas/Adam
    Tevez/Drogba/Elmander

    Krul/O'Shea/Albrighton/Jara

I need to ship Albrighton, but will see if he maybe gets some more pitch time in next 1-2 with Petrov injury (although I know he will not replace Petrov, but there may be a re-jig in the midfield)

    So:

    (A) Mal OUT Fabregas IN, or
    (B) Alrbrighton OUT Nasri IN

I don't think Nasri will continue to be a viable alternative to Fabregas by the way

Yeah Garg, set piece potential of Drogba swings the decision in my view, fair enough Lampard will be back on pens and some free kicks, but it is beyond doubt at the point that where there is a dangerous position for a free kick, Drog takes, will also be better that Lampard takes the long range free kicks as Drogs is wasted doing that.

I have 3.0 in the bank and could do VDV OUT Fabregas IN and O'Shea OUT Coleman IN for 4 points?

cheers Gargal and Dain, maybe, just maybe, I suppose I lose a hell of a lot on Malouda and not as much on VDV, that being said, VDV is playing off the striker (like Malouda) BUT is also on penalties and almost all free kicks, AND with great fixtures after United (VDV)

    Plan A)
    Gw 10.. Malouda to Fabs
Gw 11.. Carroll to Campbell/Varney(or alex to bosingwa dependin on who seems more likely a starter)
    Gw 12.. Dann to Simpson
    frees up cash to do
    GW 13.. Berbs to Tevez

    OR
    Plan B)

Gw 10... Someone else gets injured
Gw 11... Catching up to idea of GW10
        Gw 11... Someone gets suspended
Gw 12... Someone from another team suddenly becomes 'essential'
Gw 13... Someone else gets injured.

it's just a 4 week plan.. and short term it wont cost me point hits and i can keep berbs uptop for spurs and wolves at home. basically it boils down to
Barton + Berbs(2 weeks followed by tevez long term)
          Or
          Malouda + Carroll

Tough choice, really tough. I'd just have a good luck at the fixtures (inc Champs League) and try and predict how much gametime Malouda and Berbatov will actually get. Tricky business predicting when they will be rested but I think there is a load of fixtures sandwiched together coming up

Disagree my fellow 'waster'. I think that having a general plan for 4-6 weeks, as long as you keep it a bit vauge (i.e. GW27, sell Arteta for VDV or Bale or Silva, whoever looks on form, unless I think of something better).

It stops you making pointless hits, doing stupid transfers and vascilating between players and formations. As long as you don't get a silly amount of injuries you can usually adapt or point-hit your way out of trouble.

    Attack: Drogba Berbatov Carroll

    A show of hands please...

    A: Nasri > Fabregas

    B: Malouda > Fabregas

C: Keep Nasri this week and see how Nasri & Fabregas score when playing together vs 11 men (Nasri hasn't scored all that well with Fabs in the past, and to take Malouda out isn't worth it for short term gain, costing .4+ to get him back).

Fabregas seems to enjoy more protection than others to be honest, and no, I don't think he will rise tonight, all the transfers in until his protection is lifted do not count to his next rise, so if his injury flag was removed 6-7 days ago, which I believe was the case, he has 2-3 more days protection, and even if it was lifted say yesterday or today or tomorrow (early in other words) then he would still have to amass all the transfers again

So the question is cole or bosingwa. obviously cole is preferred but i would have to downgrade berb to get him. this is mz current team. robo. konchesky, dann, mummy. malouda, nani, vdv, nzogbia. berb, tevez, drogs. comments welcome!

He has 2 other players for competition at right back and I don't think he'll play away to good opposition.. i.e Liverpool away and maybe even Rovers, who are good at Ewood.
