Injuries

Since the conclusion of Gameweek Nine, there’s been plenty of news rolling out of Premier League sources and it’s often shared common ground. Managers, and players alike, are taking the opportunity to sing the praises of their team-mates while others are left lamenting their luck with injuries as the BUPA insurance premiums take a battering…

In the wake of him taking the largest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul this gameweek, unsurprisingly Arsene Wenger has taken the time to sing the praises of his mercurial french talent Samir Nasri…

“He is becoming more efficient. I think he has become stronger physically and you judge a player with his numbers…He is quite a complete player because he can run with the ball, he is quick and he is a clinical finisher now. I believe we have a great player in him now…At 23 years old your career starts at the top level.”

Clearly enthusiastic words from the Frenchman on his compatriot and certainly not without merit either. Samir Nasri put in an imperious performance with his seventh goal in seven games, and on the back of it, with two promising home games in a row on the horizon, his investment will likely rocket in the coming days too. It will be interesting to see if Nasri’s rise will temper early investment in Cesc Fabregas who is of course back firmly on the radar following his start at Eastlands.

Across the way at West Ham, Avram Grant will be crossing his fingers on two of his key figures as both Matthew Upson and Frederic Piquionne await a prognosis on recent ailments. The centre-back was forced to leave the field with a hamstring injury and Piquionne, a key figure for West Ham to date, also purportedly picked up a knock of his own at the weekend.

After McCleish’s employment of him at the tip of a new diamond formation managed to flummox Blackpool at the weekend, early news yesterday indicated that Alexander Hleb would be an early injury doubt for the coming week. That train of thought has been quickly dispelled and the on loan Belarus international is now looking good to make the derby game with Aston Villa…

“We think he had a bit of cramp as well and that shows that he’s not fully match fit yet. But he showed great signs of his ability at the weekend with some great runs forward and some deft change of feet and he’ll be an asset to us if we can get him in that kind of form. He’s not going to make the cup tie but he should be okay for the Villa game.”

Aston Villa, the opponents in the aforementioned Birmingham derby, have however been less lucky on the injury front and were rocked by the news that their captain Stiliyan Petrov is predicted to be out for at least two months, not good news. This however will open up the opportunity for one of Steve Sidwell, Steven Ireland or Marc Albrighton to step into the void in the Villa XI, perhaps aligning themselves alongside a revitalised Nigel Reo-Coker.

Staying in our second city still and we got a few updates on the state of affairs in the West Brom squad, as well as the chance for manager Di Matteo to single out one of his midfielders for praise. Starting with their Nigerian striker, he had to say

“”We want Peter back as soon as possible but we don’t want to rush him back and then lose him for a long time. We want him to be back in training this week. That is our aim but we will know more later this week.”

With Odemwingie taking to the Premier League like a duck to water upon his arrival, Baggies fans will want to see him back as soon as possible. Though with the player still as of yet not even back in training and with the words of caution above, he has to already be marked as a clear doubt once more ahead of the trip to Blackpool next Monday. Chris Brunt however will likely be around for this fixture if all goes to plan, and he remains a key figure with Di Matteo lavishing praise his way…

“He has become a tremendous asset for us. He’s the kind of player that every week gives you an eight out of ten performance. He is somebody you could go to war with at your side.”

40 FPL points (6,5,6,5,11,7) in his last six gameweeks (including a missed penalty too) are certainly a level of proof on the eight out of ten performances as Lieutenant Brunt dished out the corporal punishment on his opponents. Di Matteo also confirmed that Jonas Olsson (achilles) and Marc Antoine Fortuné (ankle) are to undergo scans on injuries picked up against Fulham forcing them to both leave the field after 53 minutes.

Also lasting a little over fifty minutes at the weekend was Carlos Tevez who picked up a knock in Man City’s 3-0 defeat at home to Arsenal at the weekend, the formative news provided after the final whistle by his manager was positive, as we await a full diagnosis hopefully to come later in the week…

“We don’t think it is a bad one, he took a knock in a muscle in the second half but it should be OK”

Young Irish midfielder James McCarthy has been ruled out for 8-10 weeks after picking up ankle ligament damage in the game against Bolton at the weekend. His absence over the coming months will likely open up a spot for one of Mohammed Diame, fellow Hamilton graduate James McArthur or Tom Cleverley to fill the breach. Emmerson Boyce has also been confirmed out for the next two weeks or so, with Ronnie Stam likely to get the nod in his absence.

Simon Mignolet has been playing out of his skin according to manager Steve Bruce, who has warned Craig Gordon that he may yet still have a long wait to regain his place as Sunderland’s number one if the young Belgian keeper can carry on as he has been doing. The same can be said for the likes of John Mensah, Cristian Riveros and even £13m signing Asamoah Gyan, who have all had pitch-time restricted lately due to the form shown by the current Sunderland starting XI.

And finally, not long after picking up their point at White Hart Lane on Saturday the early news rolling out of the Everton camp was that absentee Mikel Arteta “will probably be fit” for the visit of Stoke this coming Saturday. David Moyes also confirmed that Jack Rodwell is set to return to training soon while he expects a boost from getting another full weeks training in the bag for recent returnee Louis Saha.

    ferguson > fabregas
    Drogba > chamakh

    though an easier one is
    ferguson > nasri

Trying to decide which keeper to play out of Krul and Foster.
currently leaning towards Foster becuase Villa have only scored 1 goal at home all season and the Newcastle defence is looking a bit dodgy.

Plus he seems to be nailed on as he possesses too much quality.

well I am playing Simpson, benching Krul and playing Foster, I think both will concede, and it seems to me like Krul doesn't like to save too much and only gets 1-2 saves per game which doesn't even get him a point. Foster will be busier, both will concede, Foster for me.

Personally I would pick the home boy, Newcastle's defence have conceded one more goal than Birmingham. The weak defence thing is a fallacy remnant from the last time the Toon were in the Prem.

Yeah, I remember that. They had some mega long stretches where they couldn't keep a cleansheet during the last time they were in the Prem.

Having said that though, Jose Enrique still hasn't been getting me many points and they've conceded 7 in the last 4. 🙁

Haha, look at what I have just posted below! We have both given each other the opposite piece of advice.

I'm ditching Enrique after GW13, but I want Newcastle covered defensively till then so I may as well go for the premium option as I won't be keeping him long term.

Actually Newcastle have only conceded one more than Man Utd, the same as Villa, Bolton, Stoke, and less than WBA, Liverpool, West Ham, Wolves, Wigan, Blackpool.
        So there! 😛

Because Simpson is the logical choice, yes Enrique is a better player but he doesnt offer anything different in terms of goals/assists potential than Simpson if last season is anything to go by. Plus he is 0.6 more.

True that. I just get a little peeved lately when the lazy instinctual remark is that 'Newcastle have a shite defence', they don't. Its not great, not to a Chelsea standard, but I'd bet over the whole season they would concede less than Stoke. Buggu mark away 🙂

Anyone know whether Fab and Bosngwa are going to rise tonight? Bosingwa was over 100% on Total FPL last night but hasn't gone up.

      Also, which of the following:

      Option 1:

      Nasri > Fabs

      Option 2:

Annoying as I am not liking all these transfers in for the Bos being wasted.

I'd rather rivals have to pay 5.8/5.9 for him if they eventually decide to go for JB.

not true, he has been protected for at least 6-7 days now, all the NTI's in that time frame are discounted once protection ends, therefore, I would say Fabs is about 2-3 days off a rise and will only rise on Thurs/Friday night. In Frank I trust!

b - Nasri will do well over next couple of weeks and also get you at elast a 0.2 price rise.

I'm guessing I have the same dilemma as many this week, Foster for a possible cleany away at Villa OR Robinson at home to Chelski for save points? Any thoughts? (already used transfer)

I have that exact same dilemma. Don't really fancy either of them to keep a clean sheet. Initially leaning towards Robbo, as he's picking up saves and BPs at the moment, but now thinking Foster, as Villa haven't been that impressive this season; also I have 2 Chelsea players and no-one from Villa. If Robbo does well, my Chelsea players are less likely to and vice versa, so playing Foster would give me the chance to maximse points (IF thhings go my way...).

I'll probably change my mind quite a few more times between now and Saturday!

What are 'recoveries' in the Opta stats? Nicking the ball off someone without it being a proper tackle?

the only thing i can think of is when the ball goes astray and a player gets to it and passes it on. as long as they complete the pass it's recovering possession?

i would like to ask him to but Shay Given in January (even though Flappianske is getting better but it would be nice to have confidence in investing in an arsenal defence (that is if shay given is there ) plus he can do a transfer swap Fabregas for De Jong and SHAY GIVEN (having dejong will sure make us proud when we play Big Sam's team

      Foster Hanhemann

      Malouda Nani Fabregas NZobia Albrighton
      Drogba Tevez Carroll
Thinking of benching Konchesky, Albrighton and Jara at the moment (in that order)...but maybe i should play Albrighton with Petrov out? Can anyone see Nzogbia doing anything at Fulham?

Some of the cheap defenders actually have good fxitures I'm not worried about that. I'm focused on getting the best players from big teams. Certainly ones that can get bonus points as well as some being OOP. Goalies rotate well too if they stay in team.

I see that Nasri has 9.3% ownership on FPL and Fabregas 8.3%, so Nasri has an added 1.0% ownership and has been transferred in by 7,194 players today alone, compared to Fabregas who has only been transferred in by 1,056 players, which means Nasri has been transferred in by over 85% more people today.

Will be interesting to see if this trend continues, on this basis, I am definitely going for Fabregas as he may very well be emerging as a, dare I say it? Differential to Nasri.

We have all seen countless times a player rising above the rest one week, starting a bandwagon, only to be overshadowed the following weeks by the tried and trusted players. Cesc for me over Nasri, no question.

I'm relying on Fabregas to really push me up my mini leagues. Should be a great differential for at least a couple of weeks as people don't plan to get him back in (apart from people on here) so will miss the boat.

If he goes crazy against West ham then I am laughing mini league-wise, and people will require big points hits / have to drop big players to then get him in.

Can anyone help out with the below Tuesday Conundrum??

        Foster/Carson
        Bos/Dann/Elmo/Jara/Enrique
        Nani/VDV/Malouda/Etherington
        Berba/Tevez/Drogba
        0.7 in the bank

Am very ARSENAL light.....Ethers & Berba OUT >
        Option1. Nasri & Chicarito IN
        Option2. Walcott & Chamakh IN
        Option3. Arshavin & Dembele IN
Ideally i would like Nasri and Chamakh in but am 0.2 short!!

Of the choices, Option 2 is the best one for me, but not without qualification; if Walcott gets back to fitness and gets a starting role, he is great value if he picks up where he left off, Chamakh is also good value for two good fixtures but both players represent serious rotation risks, Walcott almost all the time, and Chamakh once RVP is back, that lone striker supported by Walcott/Rosicky and Arshavin will be one of the three (RVP/Chamakh and Bendtner).

Option 1 has the form player, Nasri, but also has the form player Hernandez who will be subject to rotation, last week, my advice would have been the same, now that Rooney has signed again, signing Hernandez is even more folly in my view, Macheda/Owen/Hernandez all fighting for that starting spot for the "easier" games.

Option 3, I would not even entertain, Arshavin has burned me so many times I can't trust him, he is too up and down, and despite looking alot more consistent this year, I am still not sold.

How about Berbatov OUT Elmander IN and Etherington OUT Nasri IN?

Would really appreciate a little help/advice. As you can see my defence is a bit shyte and needs some work.

        Foster/Robinson
        Coleman • Enrique • Stam • Shawcross • Jones
        Adam • Malouda • Nani • Bale • Etherington
        Drogba • Carroll • Tevez

        Changes i have planned are:

        Mal ➜ Fabs
        ShawX ➜ Bosingwa
        Stam ➜ Elmo
        Ethers ➜ Barton

Would you guys agree on said transfers?

That's like a mini wildcard, I like all the moves as someone taking Malouda out this weekend too. Arteta looks likely to be fit for a tasty home fixture and some good ones to come too, Johnson isn't guaranteed pitch time and Samba and Blackburn are entering a really unfavourable stretch for clean sheets, I would say most definitely, may aswell go all out and make 4 transfers whereby those 3 players are going to be in your team for some time to come.
