Injuries

Since the conclusion of Gameweek Nine, there’s been plenty of news rolling out of Premier League sources and it’s often shared common ground. Managers, and players alike, are taking the opportunity to sing the praises of their team-mates while others are left lamenting their luck with injuries as the BUPA insurance premiums take a battering…

In the wake of him taking the largest Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points haul this gameweek, unsurprisingly Arsene Wenger has taken the time to sing the praises of his mercurial french talent Samir Nasri…

“He is becoming more efficient. I think he has become stronger physically and you judge a player with his numbers…He is quite a complete player because he can run with the ball, he is quick and he is a clinical finisher now. I believe we have a great player in him now…At 23 years old your career starts at the top level.”

Clearly enthusiastic words from the Frenchman on his compatriot and certainly not without merit either. Samir Nasri put in an imperious performance with his seventh goal in seven games, and on the back of it, with two promising home games in a row on the horizon, his investment will likely rocket in the coming days too. It will be interesting to see if Nasri’s rise will temper early investment in Cesc Fabregas who is of course back firmly on the radar following his start at Eastlands.

Across the way at West Ham, Avram Grant will be crossing his fingers on two of his key figures as both Matthew Upson and Frederic Piquionne await a prognosis on recent ailments. The centre-back was forced to leave the field with a hamstring injury and Piquionne, a key figure for West Ham to date, also purportedly picked up a knock of his own at the weekend.

After McCleish’s employment of him at the tip of a new diamond formation managed to flummox Blackpool at the weekend, early news yesterday indicated that Alexander Hleb would be an early injury doubt for the coming week. That train of thought has been quickly dispelled and the on loan Belarus international is now looking good to make the derby game with Aston Villa…

“We think he had a bit of cramp as well and that shows that he’s not fully match fit yet. But he showed great signs of his ability at the weekend with some great runs forward and some deft change of feet and he’ll be an asset to us if we can get him in that kind of form. He’s not going to make the cup tie but he should be okay for the Villa game.”

Aston Villa, the opponents in the aforementioned Birmingham derby, have however been less lucky on the injury front and were rocked by the news that their captain Stiliyan Petrov is predicted to be out for at least two months, not good news. This however will open up the opportunity for one of Steve Sidwell, Steven Ireland or Marc Albrighton to step into the void in the Villa XI, perhaps aligning themselves alongside a revitalised Nigel Reo-Coker.

Staying in our second city still and we got a few updates on the state of affairs in the West Brom squad, as well as the chance for manager Di Matteo to single out one of his midfielders for praise. Starting with their Nigerian striker, he had to say

“”We want Peter back as soon as possible but we don’t want to rush him back and then lose him for a long time. We want him to be back in training this week. That is our aim but we will know more later this week.”

With Odemwingie taking to the Premier League like a duck to water upon his arrival, Baggies fans will want to see him back as soon as possible. Though with the player still as of yet not even back in training and with the words of caution above, he has to already be marked as a clear doubt once more ahead of the trip to Blackpool next Monday. Chris Brunt however will likely be around for this fixture if all goes to plan, and he remains a key figure with Di Matteo lavishing praise his way…

“He has become a tremendous asset for us. He’s the kind of player that every week gives you an eight out of ten performance. He is somebody you could go to war with at your side.”

40 FPL points (6,5,6,5,11,7) in his last six gameweeks (including a missed penalty too) are certainly a level of proof on the eight out of ten performances as Lieutenant Brunt dished out the corporal punishment on his opponents. Di Matteo also confirmed that Jonas Olsson (achilles) and Marc Antoine Fortuné (ankle) are to undergo scans on injuries picked up against Fulham forcing them to both leave the field after 53 minutes.

Also lasting a little over fifty minutes at the weekend was Carlos Tevez who picked up a knock in Man City’s 3-0 defeat at home to Arsenal at the weekend, the formative news provided after the final whistle by his manager was positive, as we await a full diagnosis hopefully to come later in the week…

“We don’t think it is a bad one, he took a knock in a muscle in the second half but it should be OK”

Young Irish midfielder James McCarthy has been ruled out for 8-10 weeks after picking up ankle ligament damage in the game against Bolton at the weekend. His absence over the coming months will likely open up a spot for one of Mohammed Diame, fellow Hamilton graduate James McArthur or Tom Cleverley to fill the breach. Emmerson Boyce has also been confirmed out for the next two weeks or so, with Ronnie Stam likely to get the nod in his absence.

Simon Mignolet has been playing out of his skin according to manager Steve Bruce, who has warned Craig Gordon that he may yet still have a long wait to regain his place as Sunderland’s number one if the young Belgian keeper can carry on as he has been doing. The same can be said for the likes of John Mensah, Cristian Riveros and even £13m signing Asamoah Gyan, who have all had pitch-time restricted lately due to the form shown by the current Sunderland starting XI.

And finally, not long after picking up their point at White Hart Lane on Saturday the early news rolling out of the Everton camp was that absentee Mikel Arteta “will probably be fit” for the visit of Stoke this coming Saturday. David Moyes also confirmed that Jack Rodwell is set to return to training soon while he expects a boost from getting another full weeks training in the bag for recent returnee Louis Saha.

On Fantasy Tools, Fab is 0% (min) 88% (max). Does this mean he's close to a rise or has the 'min' got to up?

Can anyone explain the min/ max thing for me?

I think that means he isn't protected anymore. The min has to reach 100 now for him to rise.

      Baa!!!

Basically, if Fabs isn't protected then he is 88% of the way to a rise.

If he is protected, then his price is frozen, and he's obviously 0% of the way to a rise.

Protection occurs for 10 days after a player returns from injury, so in theory Fabregas should be protected. But some weird things happens last year with protection, especially with Fabregas, so I wouldn't bet on him not rising soon.

Bosingwa's price hasn't rise even reached 117% Max and gathering on Min. Is it correct if I assume the same will happen with Fabs?

so, hang on, bosingwa didnt go up because he was over 100% when his prot got taken off? but fab is now nearly there? or does fab need to go from 0 to 100%

I don't know all that... I wish we could get someone that knew for sure, but I would assume if the max is over 100% he's likely to rise... If the min was over 100% too he would rise for sure... If it's less than that and he's not protected he's likely to rise...

But this is just me guessing trying to use logic that makes sense in my head...

ok, I've already done Toure to Brunt this week but really would love to bring Nasri in, but to do it, I will have to do Scholes to Nasri and Carroll to Varney at an 8 point cost but team would be -

    Foster/Hahnemann
Cashley, Elmo, Coleman (Evatt & Baptiste)
    Nani, Nasri, Malouda, VDV, Brunt
    Drogba, Tevez (Varney)

so my question is, is taking an 8 point hit to play Nasri as captain this weekend likely to get me more points than not taking a hit and playing Carroll instead????

He missed out on the Spurs game in September due to personal problems and since we haven't lost and have been on an unbelievable run, no point in changing a winning team. He is still probably our most talented player and will get back into the team at some point, probably when we start losing a couple.

All Chelsea defs apart from Terry and Cole are rotation risks at the moment. Can you wait til after the Blackburn and Liverpool v Chelsea games, might have a better idea on whether he's 1st choice RB or not.

If you do go for Cole to Bos and Bos keeps getting benched, you could get a Man City def to replace him, such as Boateng or Kolarov, both around the same price as Bos.

Fabs for Malouda? Yes, cos it's the only way you can get Fabs in without a big reshuffle.

Cheers Nikos, i just got it, i am also unsure. ideally i want malouda to rise before fab, andwould rather wait till after the arsenal cup game before bringing him in, but if he goes up tonight there is no point. I keep getting told so many different thing and is complete guesswork... i might just bring him in tonight just incase.

right, i would definitely say buy a car. You'll have a bit of hassle getting the rental picked up in vegas by your company without a big charge. The price will run into the thousands- seriously. Youll get a decent runner with a good bit of mileage that doesnt guzzle gas to buy for nothing in Vancouver, no more than a grand, and you'll resell it in vegas no problem at all for a few hundred bucks back.

Do you have any friends in Vancouver? The best way to get insured is get them to buy the car, and they get insured on it. As far as i know insurance in USA is on the car, not the driver, so youll be insured driving around usa, just double check whether thats true for canada). I did this for 3 years in usa with my truck that i bought through my mate.

you wont have to pay extra mileage fees, stupid insurance add ons etc. wont have a panic attack if you get a chipped windscreen, or a fender bender (believe me, it happens, my mate drove us into the iron bolts on a moving truck before we left boston one time for a road trip of 9 days-trucker threatened to shoot us and kept driving-so we just kept going, stupidly).

Do some research on rental prices, i wouldnt drive that ride in anything less than a saloon or a big old car with lots of room. Im pretty sure though youll beat it with a few hours of classifieds research, and nail down the insurance issues. Well worth it man.

iron bolts of a truck wheel.

oh, and as regards tijuana, dont drive down there. leave the car near the trolley stop at the border, check the parking signs, or pay some householder 50 bucks to leave it in his garden for a few days.

pay a cab driver in tijuana, youre so better off, hell look after you, and you wont make any wrong turns and get kidnapped. Theres coppers in tijuana that drive around hanging off the side of armoured cars with souped up automatic weapons.

Try find a club in tijuana called the beach bar (i think....) they have a huge indoor cage where you can play football tennis (like volleyball) on the sand and strut your stuff.

wear your scotland jersey, youll get laid with all the 20 year old californian chicks that cant get booze in cali.

and lastly, go to rosarito for some lobster, its a bit down the coast from tijuana, and they sell lobsters that cost 120 dollars in manhattan for ten dollars, and tequila for nothing. bring your rubbers, and give yourself a day down there. its pretty sweet.

oh, and always watch your back in Mehico, dont be paranouid, just smart.

                  enjoy man

Cheers for this feedback mate it is really appreciated. I've been hunting out rental cars at the moment and its pretty costly, so buying was a prefered option. I am staying with my aunt and uncle in vancouver so I will speak with them and see if its possible for them to buy the car and if it is ok to cross border.

Im really looking forward to it mate, needto get this out the way when im still young and free, im headin off this the now but will be on later. cheers again for the advice mate.

Doesn't look like he has the required NTIs to go up tonight - protection or otherwise. Similarly he probably won't play in the CC game so he's not at great risk of getting injured.

I really hate Bale at the moment. He's too cheap for me to be able to swap straight out for Fabs and not expensive enough for me to get Fabs and Van der Vaart for Malouda and Bale.

Really don't want him in my team another weekend even though Harry's sent him on 4 day beach holiday to rest up for Man Utd game.

Prepared to get Brunt or Adam in but will be 4 pt hit. I can see both of those players getting good scores this week.

Shame I can't just swap mf for defender. Bale and Konchesky are the next two need to go.

Damn! If only I hadn't sold Nasri last week I could have held off Fabs for another week and fired out those two this week.

So, in order of cackness, which one to get rid of first?

      All,

I am getting a bit annoyed with the 'man of the match' v 'bonus points' choices lately........

      In the following games:
Blackburn v Sunderland - On Sky Jones got MOTM and he didn't get a single bonus in the FPL!
West Ham v Newcastle - On Sky Barton got MOTM and he didn't get a single bonus in the FPL!

I don't understand why they are so different, plus I need the points 🙁

Price fluctuations have battered me with my planned get Cesc in so now the question I pose to you wise fantasy ballers is whether Arshavin - Cesc is worth a four point hit for this gameweek or if I should captain the little Russian as a differential and wait until next week to get the Spanish maestro in. This game is taking over my life.

      1) A cole > Bosingwa, Bale > Fabs & Berbatov for Elmander
      2) A Cole > Bosingwa, Bale > Nasri
      3) Berbatov > Elmander, Bale > Nasri
