World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday One, Day Four

With three World Cup matches on offer this evening, Fantasy managers have plenty to look forward to. First up, Switzerland take on Ecuador in the 5pm kick-off, with Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side looking to maintain the form that saw them top their qualifying group with an unbeaten record over 10 matches:

Switzerland: Benaglio: Lichtsteiner, Von Bergen, Djourou, Rodriguez: Inler, Behrami; Shaqiri, Xhaka, Stocker; Drmic

Ecuador: Dominguez; Paredes, Guagua, Erazo, W Ayovi; A Valencia, Noboa, Gruezo, Montero; Caicedo, E Valencia

For Switzerland, the highly-rated young left-back Ricardo Rodriguez will add plenty of attacking threat from the back, whilst the likes of Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri are tasked with supplying the creativity behind Josip Drmic, who notched 17 times in 30 starts for German side Nurnberg in 2013/14. The one surprisde from Hitzfeld’s line-up is his decision to opt for Johan Djourou ahead of Fabian Schar in central defence.

Ecuador will be looking for front two Enner Valencia and Felipe Caicedo to grab the goals. The latter was top scorer in qualifying with seven strikes, whilst elsewhere in Reinaldo Rueda’s 4-4-2, Jefferson Montero and United’s Antonio Valencia will also be hoping to make an impact on the flanks.

After that, France square up to Honduras in the other Group E game at 9pm. Despite losing Franck Ribery to injury, Les Bleus are highly-fancied in this one – they’ve won four and drawn one of their last five friendlies, conceding just a single goal in the process. Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud, Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Mathieu Valbuena owners have every reason for optimism as Didier Deschamps’ side look to get off to a winning start before a midweek meet with the Swiss.

Our late night viewing sees Group F get underway with a clash of the favourites, as Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina go head-to-head. Lionel Messi will surely be sporting the armband for a number of managers for the 11pm kick-off, though there’s no shortage of options on our radars for this clash, with Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria, Edin Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic all looking to catch our attentions before the schedule eases considerably for both sides.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

if my team position like below,
    Cillesen
    Evra Cholevas Rojo
    Gerrard Garrido JRod DiMaria
    Neymar Messi Dzeko

    if i change from 3-4-3 to 4-4-2,
Dzeko will be out automatically and i will have 1 empty spot defender, right?

Help me out with these please.

    My team atm(points in brackets)

    Karbezis(5)
    Rojo(7)--Cholebas(5)--Beckeles(6)
    Yaya(5)--JRod(12)--Ozil--Di Maria(4)
    Neymar--Messi--Benzema

I want to sub in Montezeri(defender) and Bikzadeh(mf). Are the following steps right if Ozil gets a 1 point cameo as predicted?

Step 1- Change formation from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 which will take Di Maria out.
Step 2- Ozil>Beikzadeh and New defender spot on the right>Montezeri

Then, if I switch back to a 3-4-3 then Montezeri will get remover as he is furthest right.

Am I thinking everything correctly or have I messed it up?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Be careful changing formation. It automatically removes the player on the righ of the line you reduce when you change formation.

But Bra's 2nd match is before Rus's 1st game n i have 3 brazilians.. So how is it gonna work?.. Bra game should be in phase 2 n Rus's in phase 1.. If i replace Pogba with Berez(rus def) how will i get my team up for phase 2?..

Only the furthest right player is removed when you change formation. If you remove Pogba first and then change formation then whoever is on the right still gets removed.

Nobobdy knows what's gonna happen when phase 2 starts.

Should I swap Messi (11) to Lukaku ?

And I guess Di Maria (5) to Kroos and then eventually to KDB is a no brainer ?

Ever heard the quote, "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush?" Messi has a pretty healthy 11 points. To drop him in hopes of Lukaku doing better seems foolish.

Worth dropping messi - 11 for lukaku?

Also worth dropping roja or Ramos - 7 for alderwield!

This is from the rules on fox

"If a goalkeeper does not have control of the ball and parries a shot or drops a cross, or the ball rebounds off the woodwork, the attacking World Cup player shooting or crossing the ball will be awarded Fantasy points for an assist if a goal directly ensues.

Going by that he should be given credit for an assist you would think

this is a massive stab in the dark but could you change your formation to a 3-5-2..? that way you get that extra mid on the right.. then select di maria to remove him, but don't sub anyone in and change formation back to a 4-4-4...that way, de bruyne and jrod will slide a slot each to the left, leaving the furthest right position vacant..

don't know if that makes sense or if it wil work at al though and don't think it's really worth the risk of trying it either, haha.

The McD game is so crap!!!!!

Just changed my formation from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 so I could replace Pogba with Alderweireld and it automatically moved Oscar to the bench for no reason?!

Formation change is not there so people can get the most points as possible, that's what transfers is for. Formation change is/can be like a punishment because you choose the wrong tactics.

The rules state what is stated even if not so clearly, I thought until a few hours ago that the Right Midfielder get subbed out not the person on my right :/ (as it says player on the right, I was wrong but it's confusing even to a native english speaker)

When choosing your team you should not have had Oscar on the right as he was always more likely to pick up points

You really should pick players by game order.

Formation change is there to be abused though.

i just had a similar problem.

removed Stocker from my starting 11 so i had 3-4-3 with a now empty mid spot, wanted to sub a defender in so i changed formation and now gerrard is on the bench as well!!! WTF! So im stuck with pogba and lost gerrards points

Wait til starting lineups and if your player ise playing, 6 pts is attainable even if they do nothing so maybe gamble.
