Sunday evening brings us another couple of World Cup fixtures to focus on after the knockout stages got underway last night. Louis Van Gaal’s free-scoring Holland are bidding to join Brazil and Colombia for a place in the last eight but face a tough task in the 5pm kick-off – opponents Mexico conceded just once in the group stages and have already stopped Neymar and co from finding the net:

Holland: Cillessen; Vlaar, De Vrij, Blind; Verhaegh, De Jong, Wijnaldum Kuyt; Sneijder; Van Persie, Robben,

Mexico: Ochoa; Aguilar, Rodriguez, Marquez, Moreno, Layun; Herrera, Salcido, Guardado; Dos Santos, Peralta,

The Dutch welcome back Robin Van Persie from suspension after their skipper served a one-match ban against Chile in the previous match. Van Persie is one of only two changes to the XI that beat the South Americans, with Paul Verhaegh replacing Daryl Janmaat on the right of the midfield four – Dirk Kuyt keeps his place on the opposite flank, with Daley Blind utilised in the back-three once again by Van Gaal. The United striker will be hoping to continue the form that has seen him score in both his appearances thus far, whilst Arjen Robben owners will also have high expectations after the Bayern man served up three goals and an assist over the group stages.

Mexico make just one enforced alteration from the side that won 3-1 against Croatia in the final match of Group A, with former Fulham man Carlos Salcido handed his first start of the tournament. Up front, Giovanni dos Santos will be desperate to open his account for the campaign, whilst his fellow forward Oribe Peralta – along with skipper Rafael Marquez – has already chipped in with a goal and assist over the opening three fixtures.

Later this evening, Costa Rica and Greece go head-to-head after both sides exceeded our expectations to reach the last 16. Jorge Luiz Pinto’s side cannot be underestimated after topping the so-called “Group of Death”, with wins over Uruguay and Italy underpinned by a defensive resilience that has served up two clean sheets in three matches. Pinto is understandably expected to keep faith in a 5-4-1 formation, with Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell carrying the main threat further up the pitch.

Despite a last-gasp win over Ivory Coast, Greece have failed to impress. That 2-1 triumph was the only time Fernando Santos’ side found the net in the group stages and, even then, they had to rely upon defensive mistakes from the Africans to make a breakthrough. With a converted spot-kick and assist to his name, Giorgos Samaras has been the main up top for the Greeks – once again, we can expect Santos’ side to keep it tight at the back and look for a goal on the counter.

I don't think there is value in their defence.

Perhaps tonight wasn't a good assessment, but basically, I was heading for a 9/10 with Gonzalez, and I think he was one of their top performers. Perhaps if Duarte didn't get sent off, he would've pipped him, but it would have been touch and go.

Maybe take Umano and Gonzalez, and whoever replaces Duarte.

Manchester United turned down the chance to sign James Rodriguez for £5m as a teenager. The Red Devils instead chose to sign Bebe some weeks later for £7.4m from Vitória Guimarães. (The Guardian)

Was good to see Greece knocked out on penalties because they clearly didn't even have the attacking calibre / cojones to win the game in 30 minutes even though they had the momentum and man advantage. Costa Rica didn't really focus all energy on defending, either. Greece had 5 vs 2 after a Costa Rica corner... Such a display of no courage, contrary to Costa Rica.

I am expecting France to slaughter Nigeria. Nigeria's defense is extremely weak and with France's Grade A squad to be returning I am hoping for a 4, 5 goal route. Not sure about the CS though cause Nigeria can definitely score. Come on Benzema!!!!!

I'm not 100% certain but I might switch out two 5pt players for Bentaleb & Djabou, since if they fail, I'll still have Messi & Rojo to switch in for them...

      So probably 6...

Our team doctors are on it to patch you up. They said it's not that serious and should be able to shake it off for the 3rd quarter of games. They're trying to fix SH as well and it looks like he has a slight knock and might not be able to continue this round and should be fine for the next. The rest are fit and in really good shape. 🙂

    Hey guys,
some advice about my lineup for tomorrow.
I have Muller, Djabou and Slimani playing tomorrow. Currently Neymar is the only forward who has played for me (5 points), and I have Messi for later. What are the thoughts on benching Neymar and bringing in all three of them? Can one of Djabou or Slimani get at least 5 points tomorrow?
    thanks

Not that big of a risk. Might as well go for it, I say. I'm likely pulling Neymar out and gambling with someone else. 5 pts isn't that difficult for a player to obtain, regardless of the position.

        I've done just that!
        Pulled Neymar
Playing Djabou, Slimani, Benzema in a 433
Will drop lowest 2 scorers and add mueller and go to 532
Unless all 3 forwards are over 10 points

Well that doesn't make sense! Try again
I've pulled Neymar and I'm playing a 532 with Benzema and mueller
If Benzema doesn't deliver will drop Blind and Benzema, add Slimani and Djabou, switch to 433
If one of those 3 doesn't deliver drop them and go back to 532 with either Rojo or vanBuyten added

Step three - Select substitute player

For what it's worth, I'm not sure you can change back to a formation that you previously opted out of in the same round. Say you went with a 4-3-3 and then changed it to some other formation, for example. I'm not sure you can go back to 4-3-3 again for that round.

I wasn't able to do it the previous round. I changed formation a few times, and each time I went to do so, the formations I had already used were X'd out. Couldn't go back and use them again. May have had something to do with taking players out to do the formation changes and then thus not having those players available for re-selection.....but, I'm pretty sure it was due to the site blocking formations already used within the same round.

I'm sure that I have seen certain formations X'd out, but I am not sure what the reason was, perhaps it is that I didn't have any players available to make that a legitimate formation for me...

Yep. That's basically where I'm at on the subject. Pretty sure you can't go back to a formation in general, but it may have been because I no longer had the players to pull it off. That would be the only reason I could think of other than the site simply blocks formations already used within a gameweek.

Sometimes when you switch out a player that has played and then change formation, it will also switch out a player who hasn't already played as well..

Don't panic if that happens, you can easily switch that same player back in... and it will definitely not do that with someone who has already played...

Good call guys. Djabou is a doubt. I have 4 Algerians simply because of budget factors. The irony is they have scored well compared to more expensive options. Fantasy football is like poker; if you know how to play you have an edge but there is still luck involved.

How bad are Fred and Jo? Are those really the best forwards that they could find in Brazil? Can't get over that. As soon as Jo came on, I started telling the people I was watching the game with how terrible he is. He went on and proved it time and again. Ian Darke and Macca were calling the game on ESPN and knocked him plenty too.

For real. Have been wondering where he is as well. Certainly a better player. If I were Brazil, I'd consider moving Neymar to the main forward. Hulk on one side. Willian or Oscar or any other number of players on the wings in support. You know.....tinker around with it a little. Anything but relying on those two muffins to do much.

I would move Hulk as a main striker and Neymar in the hole. Defenses will rough up Neymar even more as a target man. I would use Willian and Bernard in wide rolls and have Oscar doing all the running and tracking back.
