World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 4, Day 4

Kevin de Bruyne grabs a goal and assist as Belgium eventually find a way past Tim Howard to defeat the USA 2-1 in extra-time. Argentina also need 120 minutes to get the better of Switzerland, with Angel di Maria firing the winner after excellent work from Lionel Messi:

De Bruyne the Hero for Belgium
Faced with a defiant Tim Howard between the posts, Belgium seemed destined not to reach the quarter-finals last night. Marc Wilmots’ side fired an incredible 39 attempts on goal, with 17 efforts on target, but were denied time and again by the inspired Everton stopper before de Bruyne came to the rescue. Handed a role in “the hole” behind Divock Origi, the former Chelsea man opened the scoring just three minutes into extra-time before teeing up sub Romelu Lukaku for the second, as his Fantasy owners were rewarded for holding after de Bruyne was rested for the final group game against South Korea.

Wilmots made six changes to his starting line-up for last night’s clash. Only Thibaut Courtois, Jan Vertonghen, Daniel Van Buyten, Marouane Fellaini and Dries Mertens kept their places as the likes of Eden Hazard, de Bruyne and fit-again Vincent Kompany were recalled, whilst up front, Origi was rewarded for a couple of eye-catching sub displays in the previous couple of matches. Lukaku’s goal off the bench suggests Wilmots has decisions to make ahead of the clash with Argentina but with so much uncertainty surrounding the lone forward role, many will choose to overlook Belgium’s forward options and turn to de Bruyne, who, with a goal and two assists, has played a part in more goals that any team-mate.

Green Ruins Belgium Clean Sheet
Thrown on as a sub with his side 2-0 down, Julian Green needed just two minutes to claw one back for Jurgen Klinsmann’s side. The strike was the first time Thibaut Courtois had been beaten in open play in the tournament – previously, Belgium’s only goal against came courtesy of the spot in the group opener with Algeria. With their backline looking solid, those currently holding Belgium defensive options may well choose to retain them ahead of a clash with an Argentina side that has scored just once in two of their last three matches and, aside from the occasional flash of brilliance from Messi, have looked far from convincing up front.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, four of Belgium’s top five performers for recovered balls were defenders. Daniel Van Buyten led the way with 13, followed by Jan Vertonghen (11), Vincent Kompany (nine), midfielder Axel Witsel (eight) and Toby Alderweireld, with seven. Similarly, the USA’s main men also plied their trade at the back, with Matt Besler (eight), Geoff Cameron and Omar Gonzalez (seven apiece) and DaMarcus Beasley (six) all catching the eye.

Di Maria Breaks Swiss Resistance
The Real Madrid man atoned for a poor overall display by slotting home a late extra-time winner to send Argentina into the last eight. Di Maria posed the main goal threat for Alejandro Sabella’s side, firing 12 attempts on goal, but in an erratic display, mustered just three efforts on target – Lionel Messi had a quiet game by comparison, producing just two shots over the 120 minutes, though his Fantasy owners were treated to an assist after a superb pass for the winner.

Sabella made just one alteration to his starting line-up yesterday, bringing in Ezequiel Lavezzi for the injured Sergio Aguero up front. The Argentina boss will be without Marcos Rojo for the clash with Belgium after the left-back’s second caution of the tournament triggered a one-match ban – Jose Basanta replaced Rojo late on and looks the likeliest starter in a backline which has now delivered two clean sheets in the last three fixtures.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Switzerland edged it for recovered balls by 67 to 64. Ricardo Rodriguez and Johan Djourou led the way for Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side with 11 apiece, with Valon Behrami (nine), Fabian Schar (seven), Gorkan Inler (six) and Admir Mehmedi (five) next in line. For Argentina, Federico Fernandez was the best performer with 10, followed by Ezequiel Garay and Javier Mascherano (nine apiece), Marcos Rojo (seven), Pablo Zabaleta and Fernando Gago (both six.)

made it to top 400 going into round of 16 without him.

not having him this past round did hurt to be fair.

Im just not positive on how that game will go and I am trying to use my transfers on players I feel confident will get through the next round.

  7. The case against picking Brazil players
    DHWizzo
    • 13 Years

The argument for not picking any Brazil players:

Going in as tournament favourites I entered WC fantasy planning thinking I would always need some Brazil cover, but that PoV has quickly shifted after 4 average games that have shown how limited they are as a group. In planning for the quarters, I have decided no Brazil cover is needed and here is why:

Cesar - a real liability and not worth the risk, with other better value keepers out there (Navas, Cillesan, Ospina) and though he will pick up a few save points, you can bet James and crew will sneak 1-2 past him.

Defence - supremely overpriced and consistently inconsistent. You are sure to see a goal leaked and with the exception of Silva (8pts, 12pts, 8pts, 15pst) none will produce the RBs and BS points needed, but know is going to pay 8.5 for a defender? Sure they can score (and assist) but that isn't the strategy to build you back line on. Not when there are 4M priced starters that are registered 10+ every game week.

Midfield - After the first game, Oscar emerged as a potential target but has failed to impress since. He doesn't track back so RBs (only 4RB pts so far in 4 matches) and BS (0 pts) aren't going to accumulate. You would think Guastavo (6.5) would be a perfect solution for the McDonald's game but his fouls and yellow cards have been an issue (and he is now suspended for the Colombia game). Fernandinho got a lot of people here excited before the last game and he looks assured a start int he quarters now, but again fouls, lack of creativity and minimal RBs (3pts) made him a bust as well. If Ramires steps in and not Paulinho (4pts, 4pts, 2pts) he could be a good option. Granted his Matchday 2 appearance (2pts) for Hulk wasn't great, he does recover balls, blocks and can be creative. Too bad we won't see the line-ups as I might consider him if he was nailed on. I actually do like Willian, but he is even less assured to play than Ramires.

Forwards - We all know what Fred (4pts, 4pts, 10pts, 3pts)has done in this WC (and over his career as Brazil's target man), so no additional analysis needed. Hulk is liked by some, but scores of 3, 0, 4 & 4 show how his lack of passing and no tracking back is punished by the McD's game. It is too bad Bernard isn't getting more game time as he could be a real option - hard worker, great deliveries into the box, goal threat, but he won't get more than a cameo it seems this time around.

That leaves Neymar(14, 7, 16, 5). Everyone has Neymar in this game, it seems. My guess would be more than 50-60% of teams. He was the only real option and my only Brazil player so far. His knee injury complicates things as though I am sure he will play, how effective will he be? Against organized teams that run hard, he will also be sure to pick-up another YC (especially if he is short a step in fitness having not trained this week) and that will put him out for the semis, should they progress. He has been great at times, but also lucky this WC, and for the first time he will be transferred out this game week. There is also the chance he does his knee 20 mins in and that is it.

So that leaves a fantasy team with no players on the favoured Brazil. Will it come back to bite me? Maybe, but I'll take that chance.

First, I see where you're going with this however, against a very offensive minded Columbia we're sure to see the Brazilian backline reap the rewards of more blocked shots & recovered balls.

Also, 5th highest scoring player in the game, D. Luiz is noticeably missing from your analysis... At 7.5mil & on par points wise with the likes of Messi, why wouldn't we take the least expensive route into the Brazilian backline?

Further, with Gustavo out someone like Fernandinho for 6mill offers exceptional value as his style of play is rewarded in spades.

Finally, a note on Neymar... We hear this all the time in the FPL game regarding the importance of 'differentials' but, can you truly afford to be the only kid on your block who didn't captain the man when he goes off for another 14 or 16pt haul? I'd argue no...

On Luiz, a good chunk of his points were down to a goal and an assist. I wouldn't be banking on offensive returns and just think you can get more value for your defensive buck, especially as he faces a side that will show off his poor defending skills and likely result in more negative foul points, like we saw against Chile last week. DVB, Zapata, Fernandez all out there for much less. All of them are playing more offensive sides as well, so surely everyone's RBs and BS should be up this round?

The Neymar piece is more about his fitness than the differential. He is going to play, fit or not, and so has to be considered a risky.

Fernandinho though is the only player I might consider, but again with a poor 90 mins last time out and other options I will likely pass for others. He had -2 for fouls committed and following your logic on Colombia's skill and the teams reliance on him, you have to think he will be looking at the same again this week?

Good fodder though and a debate that will keep me guessing until kick-off...

I would take either, based on the consistent performance and high scoring of lower priced options.

Hummels has been battling the flu all week and barely trained. He has been great at collecting RBs and BS so far against juggernauts like USA and Algeria, but the frail German back line hasn't faced a strong attacking side like France. With Boatwng shifting to RB and needing to cope with the speedy Griezmann I think they will get torn apart on Friday.

Luiz, I suspect, will be equally found out against Colombia and we can expect to see minus points in the fouls and YC territory as he tries to cope with the fast paced attack of James and co. He may manage 7-8 pts (clean sheet unlikely, remember even Cameroon broke the Brazilian back line) but surely the budget friendly defenders out there could easily manage that too?

With all teams tightening up and also playing against better attackers, I would expect to see more RBs and BS this round than any other - why lots of folks are playing 5-3-2 with 6 or even 7 defenders picked.

In Fox.... so if we wait until next round to use WC with the final Four teams, will that be fine, because don't the 3rd and 4th place teams play again and these scores will count in Fox.

Of course, the coaches may choose lots of subs for that 3rd place game to reward participation.

Reason is that most of us may have 4 Netherlands players and should they be upset, a WC can restore balance.

Can anyone give me some feedback on my team. I'm playing McD's:

    Navas

    Hummels - Mertesacker - Sakho(Is he playing?) - Zapata

    Valbuena - JRod - Cuadrado

    Robben - RVP - Muller
