West Ham dipped into the transfer market for the second time this summer with the signing of defensive midfielder Cheikhou Kouyaté from Belgian champions Anderlecht.

The 24-year-old arrives for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £7m, and follows just two weeks after Mauro Zaraté touched down in London, as the Hammers set about building a squad capable of finishing in the top half of the Premier League.

Kouyaté had plenty to say about the realisation of his dreams after making the switch to East London, with Sam Allardyce’s commitment to sealing the deal a crucial factor:

“That I’m here now is thanks to the manager, because he went out of his way, leaving his holiday for me, so he has done everything he could for me to join the club. He, my advisers and agents helped me make the right decision and said West Ham was the ideal club for me, because as a kid I dreamed of playing in the Premier League and now it’s here that my dream has been realised.”

With West Ham vice chairman David Sullivan looking to secure “at least another four new signings” before the 2014/15 season kicks off, our Fantasy radars will be honed on pre-season developments at the Boleyn Ground.

THE HISTORY

Born in Dakar, Senegal, Kouyaté’s junior career began with local club ASC Yego at the tender age of six. After spending a decade in the academy, FC Brussels came calling and within two years, Kouyaté had broken into the first team, making 10 appearances in his second campaign before a contract dispute saw him leave for rivals Anderlecht on a free transfer.

Aged 19, Anderlecht had seen enough potential in the Senegal Under-20 international – who’d scored twice in his three U20 appearances – to offer a four-year deal. The move proved to be a huge success for both player and club – Kouyaté racked up 145 appearances over the following five years and went on to become a first-team regular in a side that emerged triumphant in the last four seasons of Belgium’s top flight, having finished runners-up in his debut campaign.

Domestic success brought with it a taste of Europe’s premier competition for Kouyaté. The Senegalese now boasts 12 Champions League appearances (and five qualifiers) and has also played 23 Europa League fixtures, which have harvested no more than a single assist. In fact, even on the domestic scene, Kouyaté has yet to flourish in an attacking sense. Three goals in almost 150 appearances does little to flaunt his Fantasy potential, though it is worth noting that the Hammers’ new man played a significant proportion of his games at Anderlecht, particularly at the end of last season, as a central defender – a role he reprised on occasion at international level, too.

THE PROSPECTS

Kouyaté certainly brings a significant presence to the field, with an imposing frame, tenacious attitude and all-round athleticism that has drawn him comparisons with another 6’4”, Dakar-born defensive midfielder; former Arsenal and Manchester City legend Patrick Vieira.

Kouyaté, like Zaraté, grants Allardyce a level of flexibility in his squad. The 24-year-old has the engine and power to play box-to-box but could also sit in front of the back-four in a more defensive-minded role – once thing’s for sure, though, the Senegal international is certain he won’t be employed at the back by Big Sam:

“I’m big, quick and athletic, so a box-to-box midfielder… [when playing] as a defender, it was only to fill in. Now I’ve come to West Ham as a defensive midfielder, so I don’t want to be thought of as a defender.”

Given the reported outlay, it’s a fair assumption that Kouyaté is a key player in Allardyce’s re-building process. If, as many expect, Zaraté is handed the role behind Andy Carroll in a 4-2-3-1 formation, the former Anderlecht man can expect a spot alongside Mark Noble in the heart of the Hammers’ engine room, though a 4-3-3 may allow him a little more leeway to bomb forward and lend his considerable size to West Ham’s attacks.

In terms of Fantasy prospects, Kouyaté’s lack of serious goal threat somewhat diminishes his appeal and should mainly see him overlooked, with Zaraté’s arrival far more enticing. Given the number of games he has covered at centre half for Anderlecht in his final season, there’s a somewhat slim possibility that Kouyaté may be classified as a defender in some Fantasy games – so far, though, the Sky Sports Fantasy game have him listed as a midfielder, perhaps a sign of what to expect. Given his lowly valuation of £4.9m in the Sky game, though, Kouyaté’s industrious approach could yet prove decent value for tackling bonus, whilst a security of starts looks certain and may appeal for those eyeing up a budget option in the centre of the park for a schedule that pits the Hammers against Spurs, Palace, Southampton and Hull in the first four Gameweeks of 2014/15.

It seems like Dusan Tadic will join Southampton (more Serbs in PL,yay 😀 )

He is very good player and great playmaker.

Totally,he scored 32 and had 36 assists for Twente (16 goals and 14 assists last season).

I am pretty sure he will be in my team if he is under 6.0

no chance he'll be that price, closer to 7.5 i reckon, could still be worth it though... 133 chances created last season! and 91 shots in total, 8 less than sturridge. also, the last three attacking players to come from the eredivisie have been a revelation (suarez, bony, eriksen). looks promising!

Stats from their times in Eredivisie disagree with you (apart from suarez):
          BONY 65 Games 46 Goals 14 Assists
          ERIKSEN 113 Games 25 Goals 51 Assists
          TADIC 134 Games 42 Goals 57 Assists.
          Comparable to say the least.

really interesting article about what United could look like under Van Gaal... suggests that Kagawa and Mata could have major roles, also Evans could be a key player as he likes defenders who can pick a pass. http://livelifeunited.com/imagining-louis-van-gaal/

After watching the world cup I am less believing of everything in that article. I think LVG tries to get coverage of the entire pitch, whilst first and foremost making sure the defence is capable of doing thier job.

I also think he divides the pitch based on players ability to cover said area. With holland at the moment he is asking Sneidjer, RVP and Robben to cover half the pitch on their own. The fact is they are capable of doing so, and allows the defenders to deal with smaller areas that are within their capabilities.

not sure i agree, i think one of the main reason van gala was appointed was because of his more modern tactics i.e. fluidity, creativity and supporting the ball carrier to change from the 'space coverage' tactics that moyes had which clearly wasn't at united. maybe the pace of robben and depay means that a moyes-like strategy works better for that particular side. there are more articles on that site which explain it in some depth.

I wouldn't look too much into how Holland are playing. LVG is simply trying to play the best system with the players at his disposal. He is a very adaptable manager in that he rarely asks a player to play out of position, instead he plays the player that can do the job best, even if that means dropping a star player.

Whatever he decides to do at United I am sure he will assess the squad and decide if they have a key role in his tactical plans. I hope players like Kagawa will get another chance and hopefully excel at what they do best. I would be very surprised if he played Mata or Rooney on a wing for example.

Cannot wait for the new season!

He wants London. There is still a thin hope if you want to hold onto it, but Arsenal are DESPERATE to Sanchez. Barca are DESPERATE that he goes to Liverpool so as to get Suarez for less cash. Liverpool are just looking to sell Suarez for big bucks.

Contacts. People need to realise how things change so quickly though. A couple of years ago, Sahin was nailed on for Arsenal. But then inexplicably Arsenal and Madrid were negotiating different deals - Madrid wanted a loan, Arsenal wanted a permanent transfer. It all fell apert then Liverpool got the loan the next day. That was crazy.

Research has suggested that it's usually around 4 weeks 5 days before the start of the season, which suggests 1 week today. MajorFail checked back and in 2010 it opened the day after the wc final, which would also make it 1 week today

They must want to maintain traffic to the site throughout the tournament. If less motivated players were stuck at the end with limited transfers they would likely just drop the game completely.

That being said, I still can't bring myself to playing 8-9 defensive mids and central defenders each round. Zzzzzzz.

      Aguero for the win!

It's like saying Ronaldo had a good world cup because he got a goal and assist over the 3 games, Ozil was world class at Madrid, the bar is higher, when he's criticized it's relative to expectation. He was subbed off when games were won, not because he wasn't effective.

            Exactly.

I don't understand why people think that Ozil's off form.

I suspect it's because of his serene style.

That Ramsey outshone him this season has more to do with Ramsey's emergence as a world class player.

He contributed a lot to the Arsenal's success last season. I do believe that his talents will be better exploited with runners like Walcott, Campbell, and potentially Alexis next season though.

I just rail against the popular idea that he was a flop last season. He wasn't.

McDs teams look so template - I really can't see how your rank can change much, in the interest of interest we would be better off if Hummels were only to take part in say the first 10 minutes,
At least then the (c) choice might help improve ranks.

I'm in the same situation as well; ranked 18th, but a gap of 19 pts that seems insurmountable with everyone having the same team. I'm going with Oscar as a potential differential since people have lost faith in him and without Neymar, he could shine.

My plan for the semi - finals is (Mc D):
      Cillessen
Hummels (C or even Mert if he plays), Mertesacker (or Boateng), Garay, Luiz, Dante (or Henrique), De Vrij, 1
      Lahm, Mascerano, Gustavo, Wijnaldum
      Muller, Messi, Robben

Plan B and interesting option in my opinion is to downgrade Robben to Kuyt (i like his defensive returns and even some kind of goal threat, but I m not 100% sure that he gonna start and Robben is in excellent for on the other hand) .... In that case i can afford one more Argentinian defender as 7th defender) ...
What you mates think about that? Cheers!
