Selection

Robin Van Persie’s season was fractured in two by spells on the sidelines – something we’ve come to expect from the fragile Arsenal striker. Typically however, Van Persie eventually emerged as a true Premier League force to display the benefits of his selection in our Fantasy squads.

A return to action in the New Year sparked a remarkable run of form as Van Persie spearheaded Arsenal’s title tilt with a run of goals that included a record-breaking spell of nine strikes in nine consecutive away games.

In a season where the likes of Wayne Rooney and in particular, Fernando Torres, stuttered and failed to live up to their pre-season billing and price tag, Van Persie came good on his promise to ultimately deliver his most successful Premier League form and biggest Fantasy returns since his arrival in England back in 2004.

The Statistics

With a starting value of 10.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Van Persie immediately smacked of potential. The striker’s fitness was a major concern however.

There were continued doubts over Van Persie’s ability to shrug off the physical strains of the top flight football following a number of injury setbacks in previous seasons. These concerns were soon realised as Van Persie suffered a foot injury in the gameweek 3 away win at Blackburn. The Dutchman missed the next seven gameweeks, only to return against Newcastle on November 7 and suffer a recurrence which kept him out again until gameweek 14. Several substitute appearances then followed, as Van Persie struggled to regain fitness. It wasn’t until New Year’s day against Birmingham at St Andrews that Van Persie played more than 35 league minutes in an Arsenal shirt – an occasion that was to mark his first Premier League goal of the season. From that point on, Van Persie was simply devastating.

He went on to score 18 goals in an incredible 19 match run from gameweek 21 onwards. This is made all the more remarkable by the fact that Van Persie missed two matches during this period to ultimately register 18 goals in 17 starts from December 27 through to the end of the season. Five assists were also gathered during this spell, whilst the Press Association awarded the Dutchman no less than 27 Bonus Points over those 17 matches. A simply incredible run of form which established Van Persie as an “essential” component of our Fantasy squads from the New Year onwards.

Two gameweeks stood out in particular. Arriving back-to-back, Van Persie delivered five goals in gameweeks 23 and 24 to return 31 points over a seven day period. His FPL ownership duly shot up with over 100,000 investors following in gameweek 25. By that point Van Persie’s value had been restored to his starting price of 10.0 – by the end of the season it reached the 11.0 mark as the Dutchman claimed a 25% ownership.

The Prospects

Given his end of season form, it’s conceivable that Van Persie will go into next term as our top Fantasy target. His ability to see out a full season will again be a major concern but even doubters will have to concede that if Arsenal get Van Persie out on the pitch and firing – he will deliver at a level of consistency that few, if any, Premier League player can match.

Integral to Arsenal’s attacking play, Van Persie comes deep to ensure he has a huge influence over Arsene Wenger’s side and is first to the ball not only on direct free-kicks but is also a contributor or deadball delivery from indirect free-kicks and corners. He is also likely to remain as Arsenal’s penalty taker.

New recruits and a shake-up at the Emirates is to be expected, but Arsene Wenger will also be aware that, if he can get Van Persie a strong and injury free pre-season, he has a striker in his squad who will start the season as one of the realistic contenders for next season’s Golden Boot.

Fantasy Managers will wonder if Van Persie has a 30-game league in his locker. If he can prove this to be the case next season, we could see Van Persie deliver returns on a similar level to Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2007/08. We can expect to pay for such potential however – Van Persie’s FPL price surely set to hover around the 12.0 mark next term.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Murray vs Nadal in the semi finals of the french open in 5 minutes time. It doesn't get much bigger than this.

Anyone got any bets on the match?

The budget/pricing on this U21 game is rubbish. It almost forces you into having a cheap defence if you want any of the more expensive players.
Has anybody worked out if anybody may be a budget pick from any of the teams yet?

Dan, from the last page, Eneloops are a really good brand of rechargable battery made by Sanyo.

The problem with rechargables, is that they have a slightly lower voltage than regular cells, and it tends to drop off with use.

BITD, you'd get (for example) an hour with rechargables, and they'd still have charge, just not enough to power some devices.

Because Eneloops have a very long stable output at the required voltage, they last much longer, so the device I just talked about now gets 4 hours - the same as a good regular battery.

Plus, rechargables lose charge over time when not in use, but Eneloops are fantastic at keeping their charge.

I haven't really looked into that yet, but I did spend £50 on eneloops about a month ago. I could use them, but the screen I'm looking at is 12v. That means I'm looking at 10 of them, and that's probably too big. Plus there's not much space.

Not sure if something like this will help. Been a while since dealt with batteries, but can you increase the voltage by putting them in a series or what not. Think there was and a way to increase mah and not the volts. Its just from what Ive seen the 6v upwards are rather chunky.

yeah, basically if you wire them in serial, it increases the voltage, if you wire them in parallel, it increases the mAh.

Yeah, a shame really as they came close to getting promoted to the Premiership a number of times over the 13 seasons and that is what they ultimately needed with the wage bill. Eventually it cost them that they failed to achieve promotion. Really hope they come back up, a proper football club with a great history!

If anybody is coming I can show u around Skopje and have some beer in the local pubs. And we’ll discuss fantasy football of course 😉 . If there are candidates let me know on this forum we will arrange something.

Hope to see some fantasy football lads.
    Cheers,

P.S. As soon as the match starts, we are gonna be enemies again 🙂 🙂 🙂

Hernandez won't be golden boot. RVP will be in my squad, but I don't know will they miss pl games, cause of the CL qualifications?

P.S. u r right about the fixtures, but this year i started with mind that Drogs is certain and I had excellent start, so why not risk it again. And those strikers if fit is gonna be top forward scorers next year. At least top for ppg.

no risk bet for darts tonight

        Dudbrige v murnan tonight

yeah, but it needs to be at least 2000 mAh :/

Looks like my height is about 15mm, and space.. whatever I can get. It's hard to describe, because there are places stuff can go, but to fit a large object in, it can go different places.

Actually, maybe if I take that battery apart, I can re-arrange the cells.

This one maybe? No dimensions, but I'm amazed at the output, and it must be small:

trying to get a battery to fit in this console. The console is widely regarded as the smallest in the world, so there's not much space.

And although the PC Engine can run at 9v, the screen will need 12v -____-

so you're combining the pc engine, a battery and a screen, and forming your home made & designed casing for it all

    #Utter tennis n00b here#

Why is Djokovic favourite here? Is Federer just back from injury, pish on clay or something? I though Federer would be favourite for every match he plays (with the exception of Nadal sometimes)?

Djokovic has one something like 42 matches in a row and Federer's career look's to be on a slow downwards spiral. I still think Federer's in with a good shout though.

Hamburger SV have just signed their second Chelsea youngster in a week - the Italian under-19 international midfielder Jacopo Sala has now completed a three-year deal with HSV.

The North Germans are still interested in making it three Chelsea purchases, but Jeffrey Bruma won't make a decision until he returns from international duty with the Netherlands. The main sticking point appears to be the nature, not the length of the 2-year loan deal. HSV are insisting on an option to purchase the player, but Bruma himself isn't keen on this.

Meanwhile, Hamburg's fans are starting to wonder whether Frank Arnesen's much-touted encyclopaedic knowledge of European talent is solely restricted to Stamford Bridge...
