We roll out our third in a series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player Price List this afternoon. Having cast an eye over Goalkeepers and Budget Defenders, we now assess what’s on offer amongst mid-price defenders:

At 5.5 Mathieu Debuchy may find himself in many a Fantasy managers’ plans for the season ahead after completing a move to Arsenal yesterday. With the Gunners’ centre-halves in the premium bracket and the left-back berth blighted by injury and rotation, Debuchy offers a very tempting option on the right of a back-four that served up 17 clean sheets (11 at home, seven away) in 2013/14. As no more than an Gunners squad member, Thomas Vermaelen’s appeal is virtually non-existent but, if recent reports are true, Louis Van Gaal is determined to step up his interest in the Belgian. A move to Old Trafford would immediately rocket the 5.0-priced Vermaelen into many a Fantasy managers’ plans – his kind price, allied with United’s opening schedule, could potentially prove excellent value from the kick-off.

In the same price bracket is Burnley’s highly-rated Kieran Trippier. The right-back is the dearest option amongst Sean Dyche’s back line after serving up a goal and 12 assists last season and offers a home/away partnership with Hull over the 38 Gameweeks, though many may choose to play him regardless of fixture, given his obvious attacking potential.

Having finished 25 points clear of any defensive team-mate last time around, Curtis Davies is again the most expensive backline option for Steve Bruce’s side. Whilst some may baulk at a 5.0 price tag, it’s worth remembering that Hull earned eight clean sheets in front of their own fans last term and, with five strikes across all competitions, the big centre-half carries the greatest goal threat amongst Bruce’s defence – with a number of cheaper options available for the Tigers, though, some may choose to shop in the budget bracket.

Crystal Palace trio Joel Ward, Scott Dann and Damien Delaney also set you back 5.0 this time around after delivering 12 clean sheets in the final 28 Gameweeks of 2013/14. With Tony Pulis at the helm, the Eagles were fairly reliable both home and away (seven and five clean sheets respectively), suggesting they could be more than just bench options when on the road. As mentioned in our previous article, though, if Adrian Mariappa (4.5) nails down the right-back berth, he looks the value route into a defence that rotates home/away with West Ham over the entire season.

Having delivered 14 clean sheets (seven at home, seven away) last season, Big Sam’s side were a regular source of defensive returns. Three of their defensive mainstays come in at the 5.0 mark, including Guy Demel and Winston Reid, though new boy Aaron Cresswell’s form clearly precedes him – two goals and 14 assists for Ipswich in the Championship in the previous campaign, supplemented by his excellent dead-ball delivery, land him with a 5.5 price tag. If James Collins can nail down a spot in the centre, however, his 4.5 price tag is a little kinder.

Everton trio Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distin and John Stones will set you back 5.5 apiece after the Toffees registered 15 clean sheets in Roberto Martinez’ first term in charge. The youngster’s cost is a little surprising, given that his game time mainly came as a result of injuries to others last season, though Distin’s advancing years may afford Stones greater opportunities in the campaign ahead as Martinez attempts to battle on the domestic and European fronts. For those who are reluctant to pay a premium outlay for the Toffees full-backs, Jagielka – with an average of 4.0 ppg in 2013/14 – looks the best option here.

Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan comes in at 5.0 after a breakout season saw him start each of the final 16 Gameweeks in 2013/14. If the youngster can continue as a first-choice option under Brendan Rodgers he’d offer a cheap route into the Reds’ rearguard – a goal and two assists underlines his attacking potential but with 10 clean sheets to their name in the previous campaign, the Merseysiders’ lack of resilience is an issue.

A quintet of United players come in at 5.5 apiece. Patrice Evra is edging towards the exit door, though, leaving Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Rafael as our mid-price options at Old Trafford – with Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR, Leicester, West Ham, Everton and West Brom in the first eight Gameweeks, the Red Devils could barely ask for a kinder opening schedule next time around. If Louis Van Gaal rolls out a 3-4-3 formation, Rafael could be afforded an out of position berth if he can nail down the right flank role ahead of Antonio Valencia.

Southampton’s centre-halves Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren both come in at 5.5 after the club picked up 15 clean sheets under former manager Mauricio Pochettino. It remains to be seen whether the Saints will be quite so resilient with Ronald Koeman at the helm, though Fonte’s three goal-haul last term underlines his potential in the opposition box. For 5.0, though, Nathaniel Clyne looks the better value route into a backline that faces just two of last season’s top eight in the opening 12 Gameweeks, though Callum Chambers’ game time needs monitoring after he was afforded a 4.5 price tag – all the more so given that Southampton rotate home/away with Leicester over the 38 Gameweeks and The Foxes main men come in at 4.5 apiece.

Ryan Shawcross sets you back 5.5 for the campaign ahead, whilst Robert Huth, Phil Bardsley and Erik Pieters are available for 5.0. Stoke’s home form (seven clean sheets and 17 goals conceded) bodes well for defensive returns but, bearing in mind the Potters kept out their opponents only twice on the road, their appeal somewhat diminishes – if Geoff Cameron continues at right-back under Mark Hughes, his price of 4.5 is hard to overlook. As mentioned previously, Hughes’ men offer a home/away rotation with Swansea over the 38 matches, and with the Welsh club’s first-choice back-four all coming in at 5.0 apiece, a double-up with Cameron looks a budget-friendly partnership. As mentioned in yesterday’s article, if Ben Davies departs the Liberty, Neil Taylor’s 4.5 price tag would work nicely in tandem with Cameron.

Tottenham offer a quarter of options in the 5.0 price bracket. Danny Rose is finally classified as a defender and will be hoping to nail down the left-back berth again, whilst Vlad Chiriches, Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul look likely to battle it out for the right to partner Jan Vertonghen in Mauricio Pochettino’s back-four. Southampton’s defensive form under the Argentine offers optimism for Fantasy managers – seven shut-outs at home and eight on the road (the same number as Chelsea away from home) suggests that at least one of the above-mentioned four could be great value in 2014/15, providing they nail down a regular role.

    Courtois / 4.0
    Simpson / Mariappa / Jones / Coloccini / Taylor
    Sanchez / Hazard / Eriksen / Arnie / Siggy
    RvP / Dzeko / 4.5

I'll re-think Jones if/when United sign another defender.
I've decided to wait until Liverpool's fixtures ease up and their starting line-up becomes clearer before getting one of them.

Nice. It really all depends on Arnautovic and Sigdursson, (I refuse to use nicknames despite the inevitable spelling mistakes).
You could also go for Jelavic or Long and downgrade one of those midfielders to Davis or something similar.

I have no idea how Arsenal will line up, so Giroud is a bit of a question mark. He did exceptionally well for me last year, so I have a bit of a soft spot for him. Bony could be an alternative.

        Mids grand.

the mids are great, snod should actually be good early aswell, may have to watch out when europe comes into play

I always weary of 4mil defenders as they're high risk / low reward & nearly impossible to replace with just one transfer.

This is further magnified at this point in the year as there isn't one who's been touted at 'nailed on'...

    Current back 5:
Rafael (or other utd defender) Cameron Mariappa Chester Chambers

Many will insist it is under-investment in defence, but I'll be able to field a decent 3 or even 4 for the first 10 weeks. It is as close to an uber as I'm willing to search for. Price = 23.5m. It could even end up as 23.0m if Vermaelen goes to utd.

Just need to figure out if those 4.5 players will start. But that is what the preseason is for.

How will you manage having so many there? Will you kick a bunch out?

Hey Cromulent, glad to see you back.

Yeah a lot more people have joined than I thought would, the trouble with kicking some out is that I don't know who people are on FFS judging by their FPL team name. I think a lot of lurkers have joined which isn't what I hoped for as they won't participate in the banter. I could always make another DZ league with less people and invite FFS DZers by email so no one else joins, but I don't have many peoples emails. And yes, that'll definitely help your chances 😉

    Please rate my defence.

    Cahill Debuchy Mariappa Chester Cameron

I have three 4.5m defenders. Are these the best valued 3? (Chester, Cameron, Mariappa).

I am not sure whether I should exclude Coloccini?

    Thoughts?

Okay I posted this last night and got some feedback from Demi and fans of other clubs, so these are currently the nailed on 4.5 defenders in FPL this season (and their positions).

    Aston Villa:
    Vlaar - CB

    Burnley:
    Shackell - CB
    Mee* - LB

    Crystal Palace
    Mariappa* - RB

    Hull:
    Chester* - CB

    Leicester:
    Morgan - CB
    De Laet - RB

    Newcastle:
    Coloccini - CB
    Williamson - CB

    QPR:
    Simpson - RB

    Southampton :
    Chambers* - RB

    Sunderland:
    O'Shea - CB
    Brown - CB
    Jones - RB

    WBA:
    Pocognoli - LB

    * = Nailed on currently, but will be under threat by new signings.

    Note:
    - 1 or 2 of Baker/Clark/Okore/Senderos will play depending on Villa's formation.
    - 1 of Dunne/Onouha is likely to partner Ferdinand and Caulker (not a done deal yet) as Redknapp has said he's going with 3 CBs.
    - Cameron and Wilson are both versatile (can play as a CB, RB, LB or CM) and could find themselves in the starting 11 (most likely at CM, or RB/CM in Cameron's case).
    - Taylor will be Swansea's LB if Davies moves as rumoured.

I initially included him but I talked to a couple of Newcastle fans on here last night and they think Haidara and Dummett are both ahead of him in the pecking order. His form dropped off massively towards the end of last season.

Santon got subbed at half time in a 4-0 loss to Spurs in GW26. From then on, the LB for the rest of the PL games was: Dummett, Dummett, Dummett, Dummett, Dummett, Haidara, Haidara, Dummett, Dummett, Dummett, Haidara.

I'm not doubting what you're saying as I thought Santon was first choice too. I guess the LB position for Newcastle should be avoided by us fantasy managers at the start of the season.

With the futures of many players undecided and many World cup players likely to be rested in weeks 1/2/3, the optimal window for the wildcard will be after wk3 almost certainly. So whatever you pick its not really going to matter in the grand scheme of things other than getting a good headstart. Its much better in the long run to concentrate on protecting your team value over the first 3 weeks in order to maximise the WC team you have.

In order to maximise team value, you'll need to jump on a 2-3 bandwagons using your first few weeks of transfers. Everybody does this, and will sell a player who didnt perform in the first 1-2 weeks to accomplish this. Its important, due to the mechanism of price falls in the game and high volume in the early weeks, that the players you own that are being sold do not have low ownership - thats how you lose 0.5m on 1 player in the first 3 weeks and gambles, particularly those gravitated to by the FFS groupthink method (due to strong pre-season, good fixtures, new signing etc), will often fall into this category. Much better to play safe with high ownership picks.

Also, this year, dont know if anyone else noticed but there are literally no good 4mln options in GK/Defence. Whatsmore, the number of nailed on 4.5 pairs is few and far between (NEW/SUN, BUR/HUL are the only ones available unless you want to shell out another 0.5 to buy nailed on ness. This is leaning me towards picking 2 mid-high priced defenders to start with until more budget choices emerge.

      Nice post.
I disagree with the notion that world cup players will be rested for the first three weeks. That seems a bit extreme, no?
But the point about low ownership players is valid. Low ownersip players are more likely to drop, which we really want to avoid in the opening few weeks. So don't take more than a few punts, people!

Haven't seen Lallana in many RMTs. It is just hard to predict who will score the points in the Liverpool midfield. Could be a wonderful differential.
Schurrle is a terrific player, but a questionable FPL pick. Chelsea midfield is terribly crowded. If he doesn't start, you'll end up playing Wood (who the hell is that, anyway?)
Pains me to say it, but downgrade Coleman and upgrade that striker at the vary least.

Was going to say - I suppose it depends who you have around them.

E.g if you plan on having Sanchez, I would advise against buying Ramsey as well, given how many quality midfielders arsenal have competing for points.

H/ever, if you're asking for an opinion irrespective of who you have around them, I would say Ramsey + Mata.

Your defence is too expensive and has led to a lack of big hitters in your front 8. Get rid of Howard (fixtures) and downgrade atleast one of Baines/Shaw/Debuchy. Try and get a United striker in. Swap Schurrle (rotation risk) for Arnautovic, Tadic, Snodgrass etc.

    Folks, interesting dilemma ...

    A) Debuchy and Sanchez
    B) Baines and Rambo

    What would you do?

Your team is somehow unbalanced pal .. Get rid off Gerrard .. Downgrade 1 of Terry/Cahill and upgrade Wood

Yeah, poorly worded. I mean we're getting Remy for £6m less than we're selling Borini for.
