We roll out our third in a series of articles analysing the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Player Price List this afternoon. Having cast an eye over Goalkeepers and Budget Defenders, we now assess what’s on offer amongst mid-price defenders:

At 5.5 Mathieu Debuchy may find himself in many a Fantasy managers’ plans for the season ahead after completing a move to Arsenal yesterday. With the Gunners’ centre-halves in the premium bracket and the left-back berth blighted by injury and rotation, Debuchy offers a very tempting option on the right of a back-four that served up 17 clean sheets (11 at home, seven away) in 2013/14. As no more than an Gunners squad member, Thomas Vermaelen’s appeal is virtually non-existent but, if recent reports are true, Louis Van Gaal is determined to step up his interest in the Belgian. A move to Old Trafford would immediately rocket the 5.0-priced Vermaelen into many a Fantasy managers’ plans – his kind price, allied with United’s opening schedule, could potentially prove excellent value from the kick-off.

In the same price bracket is Burnley’s highly-rated Kieran Trippier. The right-back is the dearest option amongst Sean Dyche’s back line after serving up a goal and 12 assists last season and offers a home/away partnership with Hull over the 38 Gameweeks, though many may choose to play him regardless of fixture, given his obvious attacking potential.

Having finished 25 points clear of any defensive team-mate last time around, Curtis Davies is again the most expensive backline option for Steve Bruce’s side. Whilst some may baulk at a 5.0 price tag, it’s worth remembering that Hull earned eight clean sheets in front of their own fans last term and, with five strikes across all competitions, the big centre-half carries the greatest goal threat amongst Bruce’s defence – with a number of cheaper options available for the Tigers, though, some may choose to shop in the budget bracket.

Crystal Palace trio Joel Ward, Scott Dann and Damien Delaney also set you back 5.0 this time around after delivering 12 clean sheets in the final 28 Gameweeks of 2013/14. With Tony Pulis at the helm, the Eagles were fairly reliable both home and away (seven and five clean sheets respectively), suggesting they could be more than just bench options when on the road. As mentioned in our previous article, though, if Adrian Mariappa (4.5) nails down the right-back berth, he looks the value route into a defence that rotates home/away with West Ham over the entire season.

Having delivered 14 clean sheets (seven at home, seven away) last season, Big Sam’s side were a regular source of defensive returns. Three of their defensive mainstays come in at the 5.0 mark, including Guy Demel and Winston Reid, though new boy Aaron Cresswell’s form clearly precedes him – two goals and 14 assists for Ipswich in the Championship in the previous campaign, supplemented by his excellent dead-ball delivery, land him with a 5.5 price tag. If James Collins can nail down a spot in the centre, however, his 4.5 price tag is a little kinder.

Everton trio Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distin and John Stones will set you back 5.5 apiece after the Toffees registered 15 clean sheets in Roberto Martinez’ first term in charge. The youngster’s cost is a little surprising, given that his game time mainly came as a result of injuries to others last season, though Distin’s advancing years may afford Stones greater opportunities in the campaign ahead as Martinez attempts to battle on the domestic and European fronts. For those who are reluctant to pay a premium outlay for the Toffees full-backs, Jagielka – with an average of 4.0 ppg in 2013/14 – looks the best option here.

Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan comes in at 5.0 after a breakout season saw him start each of the final 16 Gameweeks in 2013/14. If the youngster can continue as a first-choice option under Brendan Rodgers he’d offer a cheap route into the Reds’ rearguard – a goal and two assists underlines his attacking potential but with 10 clean sheets to their name in the previous campaign, the Merseysiders’ lack of resilience is an issue.

A quintet of United players come in at 5.5 apiece. Patrice Evra is edging towards the exit door, though, leaving Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Jonny Evans and Rafael as our mid-price options at Old Trafford – with Swansea, Sunderland, Burnley, QPR, Leicester, West Ham, Everton and West Brom in the first eight Gameweeks, the Red Devils could barely ask for a kinder opening schedule next time around. If Louis Van Gaal rolls out a 3-4-3 formation, Rafael could be afforded an out of position berth if he can nail down the right flank role ahead of Antonio Valencia.

Southampton’s centre-halves Jose Fonte and Dejan Lovren both come in at 5.5 after the club picked up 15 clean sheets under former manager Mauricio Pochettino. It remains to be seen whether the Saints will be quite so resilient with Ronald Koeman at the helm, though Fonte’s three goal-haul last term underlines his potential in the opposition box. For 5.0, though, Nathaniel Clyne looks the better value route into a backline that faces just two of last season’s top eight in the opening 12 Gameweeks, though Callum Chambers’ game time needs monitoring after he was afforded a 4.5 price tag – all the more so given that Southampton rotate home/away with Leicester over the 38 Gameweeks and The Foxes main men come in at 4.5 apiece.

Ryan Shawcross sets you back 5.5 for the campaign ahead, whilst Robert Huth, Phil Bardsley and Erik Pieters are available for 5.0. Stoke’s home form (seven clean sheets and 17 goals conceded) bodes well for defensive returns but, bearing in mind the Potters kept out their opponents only twice on the road, their appeal somewhat diminishes – if Geoff Cameron continues at right-back under Mark Hughes, his price of 4.5 is hard to overlook. As mentioned previously, Hughes’ men offer a home/away rotation with Swansea over the 38 matches, and with the Welsh club’s first-choice back-four all coming in at 5.0 apiece, a double-up with Cameron looks a budget-friendly partnership. As mentioned in yesterday’s article, if Ben Davies departs the Liberty, Neil Taylor’s 4.5 price tag would work nicely in tandem with Cameron.

Tottenham offer a quarter of options in the 5.0 price bracket. Danny Rose is finally classified as a defender and will be hoping to nail down the left-back berth again, whilst Vlad Chiriches, Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul look likely to battle it out for the right to partner Jan Vertonghen in Mauricio Pochettino’s back-four. Southampton’s defensive form under the Argentine offers optimism for Fantasy managers – seven shut-outs at home and eight on the road (the same number as Chelsea away from home) suggests that at least one of the above-mentioned four could be great value in 2014/15, providing they nail down a regular role.

    Hi all !
Was just thinking about top teams chances thier signing and plan ahead, just want to share it and want to know your thoughts and suggestions.

First up is the winner Manchester City.
They are consistent at first they win it,then they were runner up and at last they win it again.
Team with good manager and good teamwork and team spirit.
I think will start from defence - a bit lacking but they signed sagna and may be one CB ill do it.
In MF so much quality, in my opinion Yaya will be same again just because they signed Fernando, they were lacking when fernandinho was not in good form and yaya was with more defensive duties. Now if fernandinho is out of form or injured yaya will be the same.

Silva is most consistent player of city so there is no doubt.
on other Mf positions nasri, navas, milner, kolorov or even jovetic could play.

You know this when he plays ge will score (aguero), if he can be injury free city will bomb forwad.
Dezko - consistency and finishing skill - manager will give him more chance.
Other two striking options are decent too.
So with all this top two finish is on cards.

Most noticeable thing will be foredoom of a YAYA

    can we drop him ?

"team A and team B rotate home/away all season long"
... ok, did that result in a better-than-average points haul for the teams that employed it?

"team C and team D have a kind run of fixtures through GW19"
... demonstrated 5 months later by a noticably better points total for those who bought in?

      I doubt it.

      Form >>>>>>> fixtures. Always.

The problem is there is no hard and fast rule about rotation, at least not for me. I base it on fixture difficulty first then as the weeks go on I pick them based on gut feel/form/fixture. Makes it nearly impossible to compare.

Also what are we comparing the rotation against? We could always cherry pick a player in retrospect who did unusually well over a given timeframe and say "duh, why not pick the guy on form?" - but how would we define the starting threshold for identifying form, or allow for how many defenders one needs ti pick or would choose to play? I can't see any method by which one could mathematically test the general concepts of "form" vs "fixtures"; and it seems a bit arbitrary to demand that proof when people advocate rotating fixtures but then lean on a glib maxim in favour of a word "form" that there isn't even a settled quantitative definition of.

Say you had a defender (part of a rotation duo/trio) who made 80% of his clean sheets on the road. You justified this rotation by saying "I'll spend the 1.5m on Mirallas or Snodgrass instead of Puncheon"

Seems to me that incremental 0.5/1.0m value drops off quite a bit in defense, because you only take 3x defenders of 4.5m when you think you can rotate them.

... when you COULD have had Koscielny and played him every week

I agree, would love to see Sarjeants article... problem is it's about getting on the right one early, and then getting off at the 'perfect time'... there will be stats to swing you a particular way about whether it works or not but in the end there is such a large component of luck when trying to A - pick the right pair to start and B - jumping off at the right time.

    RMT Template for newcomers

    GK:
Pick Mannone & Krul and rotate.

    Def:
Choose 2 mid price/premium defenders from Arsenal/ManUtd. If you can squeeze in a Chelsea instead even better.
    Choose 2 rotating defenders either SWA/STK, SOU/LIE, BUR/HULL for 9mln max.
Pick a 4mln player to bench.

    Mid:
    Pick 3 of Sanchez/Hazard/Rambo/Silva/Mata
Then either pick 2 rotators for the final slot e.g. Arnie/Shelvey, or
choose one of Eriksen/Arnie/Siggy/Shelvey that you are happy to play for the first 3 weeks and pick Albrighton as bench fodder.

    Fwd:
    Pick Rooney + 1 of Dzeko/Bony/Giroud/Ade
Whatever is left is your 3rd striker... one of the above or Remy/Jelly/Long etc

At least 50% of you are going to wildcard before wk4, so dont bother with Liverpool/Everton players for now.

Mannone may be ousted by Panty. I hate rotating keepers, you'll make the wrong decision a lot of the time. Plus, Begovic + a 4.0 costs the same and will probably outscore that rotation, with Stoke's kind fixtures. He's a steady decent points scorer over several seasons.

Mannone was the best save player ... LAST YEAR. how many of the lower down keepers go big two years in a row? I too feel that there is such as risk going with rotating keepers and have always done it in the past, and so many times you end up with a 2 on your field and a 10 on your bench.

If you're planning on playing all 3 of your strikers, which I think you should, that means that you would have to push Shelvey onto the bench each week. I would downgrade him to a 4.5 (perhaps the template albrighton) and reinvest that 1 mil elsewhere . Personal preference would see hazard over Fabregas for 1 mil extra for example.

Would be good to hear some input on my team dilemmas:

Is Cameron nailed for Stoke? Played well last season and only missed one PL match. Not sure which 4.5m defenders to go for.

Two midfielders for 11.5m, can't decide?! Not including Albrighton.

Is Wickham worth a shout? Sunderland were in top form in the second half of the season so maybe they will continue and start strong. Wickham got a few goals and assists in the last few games of the season, could he be a decent pick?

    Cheers

I feel Cameron will play, but it's still a bit risky. Begovic at 5.0 is the safer option.

I did have Wickham in my team, until rumours surfaced about Sunderland possibly signing Borini for £14m. He maybe rotated a lot.

... maybe by running last season's performances through, using this season's new BPS calculations?

that's asking a lot, i know. So maybe take the top 5 or 10 BP-earning def/mid/fwd's, and run their numbers using the new BPS calculations?

As a MLS supporter I saw a lot of Geoff Cameron as a Houston Dynamo. He played as a CDM a lot and in defense on occasion. I think with the USMNT he should be used as a center back. For Stoke he has been a fullback, a position he can play but it doesn’t seem that natural to him although he is capable. Pieters and Bardsley are natural fullbacks surely Mark Hughes has to see that. I don’t think Cameron will hold down a starting spot at fullback with those two around and he won’t move Huth or Shawcross. There is also Marc Wilson to deal with.

That might persuade him to start on the bench as a super sub.

      Probably be

Matic (someone) I don't know much about Chelsea

      Schurrle Fabregas Hazard
      ------------ Costa

Oscar's due a break after the WC, Schurrle might get one too, and since Willian had less participation he might get the role before Schurrle.

You are right to spend more money upfront as this is where the game's biggest points returns are found.

I think you are chancing it a bit with Costa at this stage. He new to the PL and will need to be given time.

I reckon Salah might start the first couple of games for Chelsea. Thoughts?

He had a big break with the WC, one of the few Chelsea players not to participate in it. Hazard was heavily involved with Belgium. Schurrle and Willian played a couple off the benches and were in it all the way to the end.

is everyone getting him now? frees up so much cash compared to rvp, rooney and aguero, doesn't have the injury history (as far as I understand), and he is gonna be the spearhead of a team with fabregas, hazard, oscar, willian, and schurrle

Cheers Oberetta, I am willing to punt on pelle now that lambert has left, and is highly regarded by new manager. As for bony, I am concerned by the arrival of gomis. If arsenal don't land another striker, id definitely consider giroud. As for defense, I get what you mean with vlaar. Think I will swap with chambers, and then get mertesaker/terry. Better? Marriapa another option if pulis uses pragmatic tactics like he did last season
