The capture of Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson marked the latest foray into the transfer market for Liverpoolโ€™s owner, Fenway Sports Group, as they strive to restore the club as one of Europeโ€™s elite. The 20-year-old completed a โ€œlong-term dealโ€ on Thursday after a reported fee of ยฃ20 million had been agreed with the Black Cats.

While Henderson is recognised as one of Englandโ€™s most promising prospects, Liverpool fans will be wondering what theyโ€™ve got for their money and how Hendersonโ€™s talents will fit within the current squad.

Kenny Dalglish has added a tall, box-to-box midfielder who can bring his athleticism and eye for a pass to bear in central areas or be deployed wide on the right. Recognised by FIFA as โ€œyoung player to watchโ€ for 2011, Henderson is, in many ways, cut from some similar cloth to Kop legend and club skipper Steven Gerrard.

While Hendersonโ€™s potential is clear, with Raul Meireles emerging as a proven Premier League talent and both Lucas, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriguez enjoying their best seasons in red, thereโ€™s doubts as to how the youngsterโ€™s blossoming skills will be harnessed within the Liverpool engine room. Dalglish already has the task of encouraging the talents of Jay Spearing following his impressive displays last term.

The price tag suggests that Henderson is more than just a long-term investment. Having missed just one Premier League game for Sunderland last season, he will be looking to stake his claim for starts and presumably Dalglish has plans that will see the new England cap become an integral part of his lineup. Whether that will lead to returns that will have us Fantasy managers on alert is another matter.

The Statistics

The numbers do little to illustrate Hendersonโ€™s potential, if anything they clearly outline one of his key failings – a lack of goals. While Henderson was one of Sunderlandโ€™s most consistent performers having started 37 league matches, he mustered just 3 goals and 5 assists last term, having returned a single goal and 5 assists in 23 starts back in 2009/10.

From a Fantasy perspective then, there is perhaps little to get excited about. However, a closer inspection of his season for the Black Cats reveals more than a hint of potential. Delving into the OPTA data available, we see that Henderson was amongst the Premier Leagueโ€™s top five midfielders for goalscoring chances created; in addition to his assists, Henderson made 78 key passes. Had Sunderland held on to Darren Bent, or managed to have other strikers fit and available, itโ€™s feasible that Henderson could have ended the season with double figure returns in the assist column. Certainly, with Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez as targets, you would expect his prospects to improve in this area if he gains a regular starting berth.

The Prospects

Determined and disciplined in training, with an impeccable reputation on and off the field, Henderson arrives at Anfield with glowing reviews from his former employer. Steve Bruce has previously been unreserved in his praise for the midfielderโ€™s efforts and made his view on his potential very clear…

“We’ve got the brightest young prospect in the British game in Jordan…He’s certainly the biggest, the best young British footballer there is. At 20 years old he’s got the world at his feet…He’s a fantastic footballer…Jordan’s got the lot. He’s 6ft 2in but he covered 13 kilometres against Aston Villa without giving the ball away. He can tackle, he can pass, he can cross, he just needs to score a goal but he can do that, he can hit the ball.โ€

Having left his boyhood club, there will of course be concerns that Henderson may struggle to stake a claim for a starting role; that Liverpool have perhaps signed a player for the future rather than one who can make a quick impact. All the noise from Anfield suggests otherwise however – Damien Comolli, Liverpoolโ€™s director of football, was particularly illuminating on this matter following yesterdayโ€™s deal…

โ€œHe is definitely a player for now. Obviously it’s up to Kenny to decide but we see him as a player for now. In all the talks Kenny had with him he said, ‘If you come you will be very, very, very much a part of my plans.’ We know we are building for the future, a bit like with Luis and Andy in January, but we are also signing a player who is going to be effective from day one.โ€

Henderson has industry and strong passing skills but doesn’t possess the raw pace and trickery to suggest heโ€™s the answer to Liverpoolโ€™s lack of width on the right-flank. If he does claim a place in the Liverpool midfield, he may well drift out to that side of the field – a role he took up when Steve Bruce was forced into a five-man midfield with striker options limited. With Carroll and Suarez as options up front, itโ€™s difficult to see Dalglish opt for five across the middle, unless he continues to experiment with the 3-5-2 formation we saw away from home on occasions last term. With attacking full-backs at his disposal and a rumoured interest in Arsenalโ€™s Gael Clichy, that could yet be the intention.

In a 4-4-2 and with Gerrard back in the mix and Kuyt and Rodriguez surely occupying the role on the right, Henderson would presumably be competing for starts in central areas with Meireles, Lucas and Spearing. His responsibilities at set-pieces for Sunderland is unlikely to be translated to Anfield given Gerrardโ€™s influence so, unless there is early evidence that Henderson has made significant strides with his ability to find the net, the overall Fantasy potential on offer seems reliant on him creating chances to be converted by team-mates.

While regular starts and a fee of around 7.0 in the Fantasy Premier League game would provide a temptation and certainly make Henderson a consideration around periods of strong fixtures, it seems unlikely that heโ€™ll make any initial Fantasy squads.

The pre-season will be interesting and should reveal more on Dalglishโ€™s plans for his new signing and role in his formation. Right now, Henderson is a player that demands monitoring; a prospect that could yet flourish into a true Premier League force, although a major transformation in fortune and style is required if he is to be more than a bit player in our Fantasy seasons.

Right Fantasy managers are likely to be more concerned on the opportunities that Hendersonโ€™s departure opens for the likes of Elmohamady at the Stadium of Light, whilst pondering whether his arrival at Anfield will disrupt the starting roles for Kuyt and Meireles.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

  1. In my opinion, everyone has this one wrong - this is the starting signal for the end of Gerrard's career - at Liverpool, anyway ...

+1 he's definetly seen as the long term replacement for Gerrard and he's bought now before the rules all kick in and also to give time for Stevie G to probably tutor him. Gerrard is becoming more injury prone again and is also not as vital to us as he once was. The problem for Kenny is fitting everyone in when everyone is fit.

Alrighty, Georgio, I'll stick my pundit's hat on.

Those gks-never heard of them and doubt they'll even play!

The defence-according to the sages on here, 4/5 of those defs won't play. Klose should be safe.

Capel-good player but for ff? Also ENG in the first game puts me off Spain.
Sigurdson is my capitano on the first day.
Not sure about the other two. K'planka is on set plays and cheapish.

Good up front and initially I had Sturridge but feel Danish Billy has a better chance v SWZ and is on pens.

No Coleman was pushed up from RB to RM at the start of the season by Moyes, he'll be a Mid next year 100%.
I could see VDV being pushed up but I could also see him staying because he's already there. There almost needs to be a third category for people like VDV, Rooney, Young and Walcott.

I remember them saying a few years back they wouldn't go beyond season 15. We're currently half way through season 15, 4 months or so until the next episode.

Although, knowing South Park, this could all just be a red herring for them to joke about in the next episode in the Autumn.

Still, I'd prefer to see South Park bow out gracefully and therefore be remembered fondly (like Fawlty Towers or the Office), than run on and on, getting crapper every season, like the Simpsons.

I didnt realise that was the midway point already :(. the past few series' have been average at best, with only one or two episodes standing out. I think South Park could go on for as long as they want as they generally take the p1ss out of what ever is current and a hot topic.

I think fawlty towers had another season or two in it but I know what you mean.

I reckon the Modric mega bid would be separate to the Nasri one. By selling Gibbo we're basically swapping him for Nasri (if he signs). Still to replace Scholes, will take 35m+ I just hope they go for it.

Dea Gea, Jones, Nasri, Modric, Young ! That's some serious talent. May as well just give us the title again now.

No. In theory maybe, but Berbs doesn't want to leave Utd and if he was forced out, I'd worry about his attitude at Spurs. He's no spring chicken either. The key question for me is, even if we get your 35m for Luka, I don't think there's anyone we could get to replace him. He's really very good you know.

Yeah. It would be Ronaldo syndrome. You couldn't replace him like for like but you could use two combative box to box style midfielders instead: Sandro + M'Villa?! To let the forwards play with more freedom. Effectively playing like Utd do at the moment but you'd need a hernandez type player to run off the shoulder.

They are some quality purchases your making, I must admit. I personally think if you get Nasri you won't go for Modric and that will be your spending done.

Hey do you guys think all this spending by Utd is due to the financial thing kicking in soon?

I mean I heard somewhere (I dont have a clue if its right of wrong) that the spending and income from players will have to be balanced from this year on and I think the deadline is from the 1st of July or something? If this is true it could be one of the reasons behind the big transfer spending spike last xmas also?

If anyone is au fait with these new fair financial play rules you might be able to help us out here, cheers.

WTF is Pearce smoking? Rest some of your best players?

"We are going to have to look at doing something radically different to what we are doing.Say, if Jack Wilshere is very, very tired, leave him out for a month at his club so he is fresh for the summer.Radical, yes, but that might help the national side.It would be very difficult to get a club to do that, there has to be a compromise, I understand that. But across the board, the Spanish do it, the Germans do it, they are all here on bulk.
We are probably the one nation out of the eight that is here at the moment with players that have got first-team experience, and we have more missing out of all of those. Those statistics tell you something."

As a part time Villa fan I am delighted for him. Villa is a sinking ship at the moment, we are selling everything and just going to rely on Bent to keep us up singlehandedly (which he probably will). I think every club owner in the world will see what a credible job he is doing at the JJB with a small squad and all his best players getting sold every year.

They'd be mad to get Foster. He makes too many mistakes. Dont get the hype. He has had some amazing games but as a top keeper you need to be consistent and Foster is not... that's why Man U let him go.

Intact ap if we did get mod. What's your view on who goes with who

      Carsick n gigs
      Nasri n ando etc

I think all mid fielders learn early on that rotation wins trophies (in mid) at OT

Valencia will be fine with a young arrival the man is a gem. Nano might throw toys though

Valencia wll hopefully be like Paul. Turn up every season and just sign a contract. Did Paul even have an agent?

Hopefully Carrick makes way! But he signed a new contract so that's doubtful ๐Ÿ™

Hmmm good question. All depends on formation. Carrick, Anderson, Giggs, Fletcher, Cleverley, Nasri and Modric would all rotate for the 4 competitions. No idea on the pairings.
