Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

true, but I find him distinctly overrated.

which doesn't mean he won't do well in the opening fixtures so I haven't ruled him out yet with a quick swap to Rooney as RB pointed out below

              2 clubs don't a league make.

levels of success to that extent are almost expected when a club spends nearly $1 billion in 5 years (Real Madrid), anything else is embarrassing..

But the "third club" won the league. The two other clubs have the two best players in the world.

In contrast the premier league has: Man City bankrolled by a foreign sheikh that has spent £930.4 million over a 4 year period

You can see the recent spending by premiership clubs here:
                http://www.sportskeeda.com/football/premier-league-club-transfer-spending-over-five-years/

Basically its a three horse race finance wise Man City, Man United and Chelsea which is the way the top three will pan out regularly.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have always spent. Real Madrid broke the world record and then broke it again that same window. They have a monopoly on the TV rights. Overall winning the Premier League is far more prestigious than winning La Liga. Players choose La Liga for money, weather and taxes and the name of Real/Barca (even if they won't even play!).

Me, myself, I am having him for GW1 and 2 then swapping for Rooney and his 3 back to back games VS the promoted sides. My captains sorted for the first 5 GWs.

Not keen on Krul/Mannone rotation if I'm honest.
Wisdom and Chambers are by no means nailed on and I don't think I'd plan as if Verm to United is a done deal.
I think Mariappa should be a safe starter though.

Are we expecting these players (or most) to be rested for the opening few fixtures?

    Germany: Ozil, Schurrle, Podolski, Mertesacker
    Argentina: Zabaleta, Demichelis, Aguero
Netherlands: Vlaar, de Guzman, van Persie, Janmaat
Brazil: Fernandinho, Paulinho, Oscar, Ramires, Willian

I have Aguero and Ozil in my team atm. Should I be worried? And what about all the Rvp owners?

    Thanks.

Looked back over the last 10 years and league positions are very similar.
The difference is Spurs have probably double the amount of players on their books.
All Everton need is a new ground and investment.

Sorry, to be more constructive: You have few good captaincy options. Your defence is too heavy and having such cheap strikers is a really bad idea if you want to score points. The poor balance will also make it difficult to bring in bandwagons and shift out injured players. If you have Szez, no need to have a back-up imo.

Just a few ideas. The midfield isn't bad. I

His defence is definitely not too heavy. No part of his team is, except bank account.

My advice is, watch an Arsenal home match from 2012 and listen what the crowd shouts:

          No worries mate 🙂
I know what you mean about rival teams but rule 101 is dont let your heart rule your head. Im a Pool supporter and I dont even have one of our players..Id love to but there is better options elsewhere...Points over pride. Im in no way a United fan either but with their opening fixtures they're too good to ignore. I think 1 or 2 of Rooney/RVP/Mata is essential.

Its a lottery at the end of the day so what does anyone know 🙂 What you have there might outscore me royally!

Lamela/Eriksen Hazard Ramsey Mata De Jong
    Rooney Giroud Bent

Only Punt is Bent as 3rd Striker. With Benteke and Kozak injured Bent might start.

    Is the Defence Correct?
Should I get Vlaar out for other 4.5 def?
    Suggestions welcome

I'm tempted to. They're all so horribly expensive, Toure was relatively reasonably-priced last season and a gamble on him paid off, but there aren't any equivalent options this season.
Kompany tempts me, but I don't want to spend too much on the defence...

Not bad, the defence is a little weak where Mariappa and Chester are concerned, and Arnautovic worries me with his ill-discipline and poor reliability. I don't like any of your forward options, although the reasons are largely personal - I prefer Rooney over RVP, and I reckon there are better options than Giroud. Jelavic is the better of the two Hull options, but oonly marginally - I'd look at other options at that price, like Austin, upon whom QPR are totally reliant for goals, and Ings, who is brilliant.

Yep that's quite an extraidonary midfield. I did have Sanchez Hazard Silva Mata and Siggy at a point.

League table from the close of last season's transfer window till GW38...

    Liverpool
    Manchester City
    Chelsea
    Everton
    STOKE
    Arsenal
    Tottenham
    Manchester United

Given their fixtures - they only play one of the "Big Seven" before bonfire night - there's a pretty reasonable chance that they can carry on exactly where they left off. I'll be having two of them in my team at least (Begovic and either Arnautovic or Odemwingie) and I'm seriously thinking of doubling up in defence. Problem is who to go for? Shawcross is a bit steep at 5.5 and I've read there's some doubts about the play-time of others.

Any Stoke experts out there who could advise?

    Cheers.

VERY intriguing... I've a lot of respect for Hughes' managerial ability. I can't seem to respect his players though, and as for his signings, Diouf may well be quality, we'll have to wait and see. Bojan, however, may be from Barcelona but he failed to impress Roma during his two years there. So I agree that they are interesting, but remain unconvinced.

So Arsenal WC trio will miss start of the season. Puts in doubt surely the return of RVP, Aguero and any other players who made it to the last four??

He is injury-prone; it'll be the slightly reduced amount of pre-season training that worries Wenger - if his worries are indeed genuine.
