Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

not just penalities, RVP is surely a more clinical striker who should still score more in open play? Also, captaincy comes into it too, I'd much rather captain RVP over Rooney (because of penalties too) and RVP's extra points could become double points.

On the flipside, maybe Rooney will get more assists...?

I think I'm going to plump for Wayne and save the £2m...

Have to say formations worry me though. If 3-5-2 isn't working and LVG switches back to 4-3-3, then it'll probably be Rooney who'll lose out on the central striking spot to RVP. He carries more risk IMO.

Rooney wins in categories such as assists, free kicks, corners and I think he's marginally less injury prone. He's 2 million cheaper and play as long into the World Cup in which RVP looked lethargic and.. well.. crap.

Wenger said: “I have given them a good break because I have experience of players who have been in the World Cup Final. You need a rest.

“Will they be ready? Mertesacker prepares well - but for the first game... I don’t think they will be ready for August 16."

Wenger would like to get his Germans playing earlier, but explained his hands are tied by FIFA rules.

He added: “A post-World Cup year is always very difficult and short, the World Cup Final was July 13 and the start of the Premier League is August 16.

“From FIFA we are obliged to give four weeks' holiday to the players, so I don’t know how all that works together. It looks impossible to me. A post-World Cup year is always very difficult for every big club because the players have been away.”

If they go 433 he will have a fair few players to rotate with. He's not a guaranteed starter as Lallana, Coutinho, Markovic, Sterling, Lambert and 'the incoming' could play across the front 3.

Dodgy keeper situation as I wouldn't be surprised if Panti moves his way into that team at some point this season. Seems too good to be a bench keeper at Sunderland.

I like the defence, but would maybe downgrade someone to upgrade Fab to Haz. Haz being given penos makes his superior for me. Are you not worried about Remy being put out on the wing?

        I always go with a 4.5 GK with a 4 GK.

Hoping I can squeeze Hazard in. Remy can play anywhere across front 3, just like everyone in that LFC attack. No such thing as a fixed position under BR

Any combination of about 40 players looks both familiar and good even though they are all fairly different so why ask if it's good? And why reply that it's template when actually it only seems that way because it has players from the same pool of 40ish? And why bother posting a team with anyone included who isn't in the 40ish when you will get slagged off for being different? 🙂

if teams have to give players 4 weeks off, and the World Cup Final was July 13 and the start of the Premier League is August 16 does that mean that any Germans and Argentines are unlikely to play in the first game? so Aguero and Demi as well as Arsenal's Germans, and Schurrle

Pellie has already said Zaba is to be eased in, so Sagna starts for us. 1, 2, 3 weeks who knows though? My thoughts are that Sagna plays all the 'easier' matches, and the ones directly before Europe. Zaba the rest.

      Long story short...Zaba is out

    Good evening lads.

    What do you think?
    Krul / Mannone
    Shaw / Debuchy / Luis / Wisdom / N.Taylor
    Sanchez / Hazard / Eriksen / Dejong / Albrighton
    Dzeko / Rooney / Jelavic

I realised if United are gonna set up 3-5-2 for the season, then RVP is not worth the extra 2 mil and Rooney becomes the way to go (except for the penalties which I dont think is worth the extra 2).
I also think Shaw could create more and get more attacking points with the new system.
My think i over-spent a bit on defence, but I think my attacking options look okay.
Jelavic has really good fixtures at the beginning of the season, and he is on penalties. that's why I pick him!

      Decent balance to your team
I won't be risking Chelsea defence until I've seen how JM is lining it up
Have a feeling the back 4 that was so good last year won't get broken up straight away
6.0-7 on a defender not starting (or getting 1pt) is too much risk

Was looking at the six week projections for defenders, and I'm scrolling through the list and I saw Caulker for QPR. He was priced at 5.0. I thought since when did FPL even add him? So I quickly went on FPL, and he's not even been added yet!!!
