Maurico Pochettino made his first foray into the transfer market as manager of Tottenham by snapping up Ben Davies and Michel Vorm from Swansea City. The former arrives at White Hart Lane for a fee reported to be in the region of £10 million as the north London outfit saw off Liverpool in the race for his signature.

Having made his debut in the midweek friendly win over Toronto, the 21-year-old left-back discussed his move with the club’s official website:

“I’m very happy to be joining a club like Spurs. It was such a good opportunity for me and there was no doubt in my mind about it. It’s a great place to be and something I jumped at the chance of being part of..I just want to play as many games as I can this season. My aim is to come in and do my best and work hard under the new gaffer.”

The History

A product of the Swansea youth system, Davies was propelled into the first-team as a 19-year-old after first-choice left-back Neil Taylor suffered a serious ankle injury at the start of the 2012/13 campaign. Despite a lack of top-level experience, Davies was afforded the chance to impress by then-manager Michael Laudrup and went on to feature 37 times in his debut Premier League season, producing a goal and two assists.

Despite Taylor’s return to full fitness last term, Davies continued as the Swans first-choice left-back under Laudrup and replacement Gary Monk. Racking up another 34 league appearances, his raids down the flank served up two goals and an assist for the Welsh outfit.

On the international stage, Davies represented Wales Under 19 side on three occasions before being handed his senior debut in October 2012. He’s since gone on to represent his country 10 times and remains ahead of former team-mate Taylor in the pecking order.

The Prospects

Pocchetino’s penchant for attacking full-backs in his preferred 4-2-3-1 system bodes well for Davies’ Fantasy potential over the season ahead. The raiding runs of Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw were a feature of Southampton’s play under the Argentine last season and the new man in charge will be keen to replicate a system that helped his former side to an eighth place finish in his only full campaign at the helm.

A look at Davies’ distribution in 2013/14 underlines he was more than a little unlucky just to pick up a single assist. The left-back produced 31 key passes for the Swans last term – joint seventh amongst defenders – and created a goalscoring opportunity for team-mates every 97.6 minutes; up from 178.9 minutes in his debut campaign and illustrating his improvement in the final third.

Furthermore, Davies improved his successful dribbles from 43.2% to 51.7% in 2013/4 and also improved his shot accuracy (from 22.2% to 33.3%) and the frequency of attempts on goal (336.2 minutes per effort compared to 357.8 the season before) to further indicate the 21-year-old’s growing stature.

Bearing in mind that Pochettino led Southampton to 15 clean sheets in the previous season – seven at home and eight away, more than any teams on their travels – there’s a real belief that Spurs could offer us strong potential at the back, boosting Davies’ prospects at both ends of the pitch.

Another cause for optimism is the youngster’s price across the Fantasy games. Starting off as a Swansea player, he sets you back just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and 5.5 in the Sky Sports game; bearing in mind fellow full-back Kyle Walker and Jan Vertonghen are priced at 6.0 apiece, Davies certainly has the potential to provide us excellent value. His move also allows Taylor the chance to reclaim the Swansea left-back berth and, at 4.5 in FPL, he’s now back on some managers’ radars ahead of four decent home games in the first seven for the Swans.

The opening schedule also smiles in Davies’ favour. With Pochettino’s side set to face just three of last season’s top seven in the opening 12 Gameweeks – including home matches with QPR, West Brom, Southampton, Newcastle and Stoke – the young Welshman is handed the chance to play his way into our Fantasy plans from the outset.

Don't go for just penalty.pick overall player whom you think producing one or two attacking return in 4 or 5 games so increase in his value can increase your team value.

I was planning on starting the season with Kosc, then shipping him out for Vertonghen in week 2. Reconsidering, though. I may just start with Vert because that transfer may be more valuable for reacting to a bandwagon.

Having thought about it I don't think missing those 3 players will be that big of a deal for Arsenal. Ozil hasn't really performed to the best of his ability for Arsenal and Verm used to start ahead of Mertisacker and Podolski is normally a bench player anyway.

Please note Iva can fit in as right back or centre back. Zouma looks set to stay at Chelsea after being handed number 5 shirt so he might get minutes too. Thirdly lukaku seems to be here to stay following Ba's departure. If he leaves it will have to be a forced move. Other than that you notably have salah who is being weighed out in the friendlies so far and if he impresses he might get a few minutes too. Czech is also back from injury so that puts courteous' position in more doubt than it was before but I still believe he will start ahead of the veteran in the league atleast.

He might not be added yet I haven't really checked. He was out on loan In typical Chelsea youth hoardng fashion the very moment he signed, and was expected to go out again but handing him the number 5 shirt signals otherwise.

He might be a cheap way into the Chelsea defence if injuries go his way later on in the season.

if he plays in the pivot, it'll be alongside Matic, not Ramires

imo, Ramires will only play if it's 433 or if Cesc is in the hole and Ramires is alongside Matic in the double pivot

    would you rather have

    OR

    b) krul, mannone, sanchez, hazard, siggy

Tight but I'd go with A.

I hate this part of the season, seems like every decision is so crucial and if you make the wrong picks out of the gate you're screwed. Not really sold on soggy, and I think Man U will be much more organized at the back this year.

I like B for a bunch of reasons. It lets you easily downgrade sanchez -> ramsey or hazard -> fab if you like. The other way round would be hard without hits. Also a fan of save points in GKs instead of DDG. And you can wait and watch till the dust settles on the Erik vs Érik debate.

Mourinho loves Azpilicueta. Last year he said that 11 Azpilicueta's would win the champs league, and after another game he said he was 'unbeatable'. He kept Ashley Cole on the bench, still one of the best left backs in the world imo, and he had a great season. Everyone seems to think Luis will take his position though. It's frustrating. Might just go for Terry.

"When I joined, it was the same thing. Carlo Cudicini was the equivalent to me in the first game and I managed to get that jersey off him. Obviously, the work I put in, the manager put me in the first team in goal and it kicked on from there. I will try to do the same this year. It is no different."

"Every year there is a challenge. If you are going to be in the team you are going to have to do better than the other guys in the team. I think Mark Schwarzer, when he came last year, did remarkably well during the pre-season and when he played in any game he did very well, so I knew the challenge was there."

"I always give my best and, obviously, that is all I can do. I will do my best and do everything I can do to be as ready as possible for when the season starts. Jose Mourinho will make his choice and decide how his team is going to look for the first game, second game, third game, whatever game."

"I know that I am fit, although obviously I have this shoulder. Apart from this, I am fit and I did not feel any problems over the 90 minutes. I am happy with the condition I am in, let's see what happens next."

    - Petr Cech; source: Telegraph

As a fan you have to be happy..but think from a goalkeepers prospect as well..then it becomes sad..

Neuer is right now treated as the best keeper in the world but Courtois can very well challenge that...but if he doesn't get chance to prove..he will never be regarded as the best!

20 million is about what transfermarkt and all the transfer rumors earlier in the summer put him at, but there's no sense trying to argue it. In any case, he's worth a lot. One injury-riddled season in a new league doesn't totally destroy a player's value, but two seasons on the bench might come close.

What he, you or I think doesn't mean jack really. The only person's opinion that matters is Mourinho's.

Someone in that Chelsea defensive rotation is going to miss out on the season opener, for sure. But that's all we really know for definite right now, unfortunately for us. 🙁

If you were classifying the risk from riskiest to safest the list would go like this:

          Luis
          Azi
          Ivan
          Cahill
          Terry

This is based on Mourhnho's history with the team. And what I think does matter to the make up of my squad!

But how do you know that Mourinho doesn't look at the same bunch of players and have a different order in his head as to who he ranks as safest to riskiest to play?

What you think matters to who you pick but it won't affect the outcome of the teamsheet that Mourinho hands in to the match officials an hour before kickoff on Monday 18th August.

How do you differentiate between gut feeling and pure imagination?

I've been thinking about FPL months before it opened... and I remember I had this first thought, my first instinct if you will, which was to get Winston Reid in my team for the start of the season...

I thought then that it might work (he's good for a few headed goals, bps etc), but I didn't give it any real consideration until now...

As the first deadline looms closer, I find myself thinking back to that initial thought I had about Winston Reid, now all the logic says that he isn't necessarily the best option about... but now I find myself imagining scenarios (images popping into my head unwillingly might be a better way to describe it) where he gets an unlikely 15pts in his first game v Spurs... a bit random...

Is this an extension of my initial gut feeling, or am I now subconsciously attaching my imagination to this feeling and allowing it to run wild with scenarios?

West Ham don't have the worst first 4 fixtures... I could do worse than to see if my gut is trying to lead me towards success or not...

Sounds like you are imagining ideal scenario's to back up your origional gut feeling. Only, it doesn't really back it up.

My advice is to ignore any imagined scenarios and ask yourself why you had a good gut feeling about Winston Reid.

I have absolutely no idea why the idea about Reid popped into my head all those months ago...

I am open to the fact that previous years have altered my perception and that my mind has somehow correlated his previous efforts and concluded to me that he is a good pick...

Now I feel compelled to find out..

after the first two gw's chelsea have a poor fixture every other week

eve, SWA, mci, AVL, ARS, cpl, mun, QPR, liv

so do we really want one of their defenders for that? especially since we could easily pick the wrong defender who gets benched in gw 1

also to note is they have CL matches before each of the hard games, meaning they could possibly see some rotation in the easy games
