Mark Hughes continued his transformation of Stoke City earlier in the week with a sensational swoop for Barcelona’s Bojan Krkic. The 23-year-old signs on at the Britannia in a four-year-deal and is the fifth new face to arrive during the close-season, following Mame Biram Diouf, Steve Sidwell, Phil Bardsley and Dionatan Teixeira to the club.

Discussing the transfer with the club’s official website, Hughes couldn’t hide his delight with a move that stunned the football world when news broke last Wednesday:

“Anyone who knows European football will be aware of him as a player and the fact that he sees his future at Stoke City is really exciting and an endorsement of the Club itself. He’s desperate to prove himself in the Premier League and we’re pleased to be able to offer him that platform. The time he spends with the squad in Germany will help him settle in and will give myself and the coaches the chance to take a good look at him.”

The History

Drafted into the Barcelona youth system at just nine-years-old, the versatile forward was handed his debut for the club’s B side during the 2006/07 season and subsequently scored 10 times in 22 appearances. Stepping up to the senior side the following year, Bojan delivered 10 goals and three assists in 31 La Liga matches in a promising start to his career.

Struggling to cement a regular role amid the big-money buys, Bojan’s form dipped for the Catalan club. Whilst the following three seasons harvested a mere 16 goals and nine assists in 73 league matches, it’s worth noting that the vast majority of those appearances were severely limited – the forward was often brought on towards the end of Barca’s matches and resultantly averaged just 26.7 minutes per game.

Sold to Roma ahead of the 2011/12 campaign with a buy-back clause inserted in his contract, Bojan again failed to nail down a starting berth. Over 33 appearances for the Serie A side, he scored seven times and served up just a single assist – again, though, an average of 42.7 minutes per appearance hardly helped his cause. Loaned out to AC Milan the following season, Bojan’s three goals and two assists over 19 league games were once again hampered by a lack of regular action, with an average of just 39 minutes per match for the San Siro club.

Bought back by Barcelona for €13m last summer, Bojan was immediately farmed out to Dutch club Ajax. Over 26 league games, he chipped in with four goals and four assists, helping the club to a fourth straight Eredivisie title, but again his game time suffered – this time around, he averaged 56.3 minutes per appearance.

On the international scene, Bojan was prolific at youth level, netting 20 goals in 41 appearances for the Spain Under 17 and Under 21 sides. His inability to nail down a regular role has proved costly, though; after making his debut for Spain back in 2008, he’s failed to feature since.

The Prospects

The new boy’s willingness to move from the Nou Camp to the Britannia certainly indicates he’s likely to be handed a key role by Hughes in the campaign ahead. Set to turn 24 years old next month, his career is badly in need of some stability after seasons on the periphery and the Potters’ new possession-based approach under Hughes could reap reward.

Following years of physical football under Tony Pulis, Stoke took their time to settle last term but, as the campaign progressed, the Welshman’s tactics paid off handsomely. Just three defeats in their final 15 matches helped the Potters to a ninth place finish – their highest ever Premier League placing in Hughes’ first year at the helm.

Standing five foot seven inches tall, Bojan seems unlikely to be handed the lone striker role, with the likes of Mame Biram Diouf or Peter Crouch affording the Potters a more physical option up front. However, the Spaniard is versatile enough to offer an exciting alternative right across the attacking midfield three spots, if, as expected, Hughes retains his default 4-2-3-1 formation. This will likely see Bojan line up alongside Marko Arnautovic and Peter Odemwingie, with the new boy intriguingly fielded in “the hole” behind Diouf in his debut against 1860 Munich yesterday.

Certainly, aside from that debut year at Barcelona, his lack of overall impact could prove enough of a deterrent for would-be investors. While kindly priced across the Fantasy games (5.5 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.0 in Sky Sports), Bojan’s classification as a forward also dents his appeal, though his low cost in the FPL could catch the eye of those searching for a cheap third striker. Stoke rotate nicely with Swansea over the 38 Gameweeks for example and, pairing him with Gylfi Sigurdsson in midfield, would allow you to alternate from 3-4-3 to 3-5-2 if you intend on playing the fixtures. The Potters picked up 36 of their 50 points at the Britannia last season and are clearly far stronger in front of their own supporters.

With showdowns against only three of last term’s top eight in the first 12 Gameweeks, the opening schedule certainly suggests Hughes’ side could be quick off the mark. Bojan may need some time to acclimatise, though, and with Arnautovic and Odemwingie ending the previous campaign strongly, it looks less of a risk to opt for one of the two midfielders and assess the Spaniard’s impact.

Fair enough. You seem to think G Johnson is some kinda superstar right back. Shite in real life and I wouldn't be starting with him in my team.

Or doubling up with west brom defenders. Or starting with three midfielders.

So if your happy with that I'd hate to see the unsatisfactory drafts..

My theory on the Chelsea defence debate is that Azpi - Ivanovic will be rotated. Azpi for games where Mourinho will be more defence-minded and Ivanovic when he wants more attacking power or when playing teams with low offensive threat.

Similar to what Man City did last year with Clichy-Kolarov!

They'll all be rotated ... it's sort of obvious, and very much Jose's way. He has options at CB,LB and RB now. I think it's reasonable to assume (for planning purposes) that all the top 5 defenders will play 80% of the time.

2nd year player. Anyone keen to rmt. A mate a work has been a big help

    Mannone (Myhill)
    Luis, B. Davies, P. Jones (N. Taylor, 4.0)
Hazard, Ramsey, Mata, Siggy (El Ahmadi)
    Rooney (c), Dzeko, Giroud

I had Mannone last year & he posted some decent scores. Imo he'll start.
I believe I've got fixture friendly/nailed on for my defence.
    Gone Hazard/Ramsey v Sanchez/Fab. Gone experience/safety v potential.
Giroud I'm not sure on but again gone no risk. Considered Bony but I have Siggy. Considered Remy who I had last year but too many if's with him.

    Thoughts appreciated.

He has had an incredible season and figure I should be aiming for overall points rather than 'cover', especially as I already have Rooney.

An easy solution to Chelsea defensive nailed on-ness debate - avoid them. Mourinho could well go more attacking this season, and Real under him were never particularly tight. Plenty other strong choices that warrant attention

Starting without a defender from the best defence in the league? JT and Cahill are nailed on. Luis will eventually be nailed on too.

It's just like City attacking cover. It doesn't matter who you have as long as you have someone from the front 4 + yaya. Usually there are points to be had.

    Cahill, B.Davies, Ward, N.Taylor, Chester
    Ramsey, Fabregas, Mata, Sigurðsson, Albrighton

The possible arrival of Robertson at Hull might mean figueroa is pushed into the middle, meaning Chester drops out. Keep an eye on that, if he gets played then the defence looks fine if they rotate well

Special mention for the icelandic character in Sigurdsson, but i would say that i don't think mata or sturridge will do particularly well. Mata -> Eriksen perhaps, but also could do the option that you stated at the bottom if you believe that Sturridge will do well, just my opinion that he won't.

Going to dispel a few Saints myths from the previous page:

Targett is not nailed on. Koeman has confirmed he wants an experienced LB.

Isgrove is unlikely to start, probably not worth the gamble. We have Wanyama and Schneiderlin to come back and money to spend. That'll push Davis/JWP further forward.

We don't have an experienced left back. And sadly (very sadly) I doubt Morgan will be a saints player by the time the season starts. Koeman has also been talking up our youth players.

Admittedly isgrove is less nailed then targett, but at this stage Targett has to be first choice.

Since the Azpil vs Luis debate is dominating past couple of pages - reposting what i posted yesterday.

Thought I would share what Chelsea FC fans reckon their starting defence will be. Based on this thread: http://www.theshedend.com/topic/26164-next-seasons-starting-xi/ below % are the number of fans who have them in starting 11, and represents 42 posts by CFC fans on their ideal backline.

    Courtouis - 90.5%
    Cech - 9.5%

    JT - 100%
    Cahill - 100%
    Luis - 95.2%
Azpil - 92.9% (Of posts with Azpil in team, all but 1 have him as starting RB. 1 poster had him at LB)
    Ivanovic - 11.9%

88% of teams have 1st choice back 4 as Azpil - JT - Cahill - Luis

Read into that however you will! 🙂

Azpi was our second best player last season... he won't be dropped. And Jose wouldn't have spent 20M on a defender he has no intentions on playing. I believe Ivanovic will be rotated with Cahill and Terry or used on the right against the more physical teams such as West Ham.

Just wondering if people are concerned about their (c) choices when picking their squads?

For example I have Rooney who I would feel confident in putting the band on most weeks if need be, but then I have the likes of Hazard and Dzeko who while are obviously good FPL players to have, I wouldn't have that same confidence in putting the (c) on them to do the damage.

I think that while the pricing means better potential all round squads, might it not be better to have a core set of (c) players that you can trust to bring in the big points and then build around them?

    Interested to hear people's thoughts.

This is why I've gone for Hazard and Eriksen vs 2 x 9.0s. I feel more confident captaining someone explosive like him than, for example, Silva. Sanchez will become C-able if he moves into the ST position.

Why do people consider Terry a risk? He started 34 games in the league last season. He's had the summer off and 33 isn't exactly that old for a CB of Terrys style.

was looking at inter milan the other day as they may be useful. lucio and samuel were the 2 main men and both were 32 at that time. both players were rested a few times for champions league games. if there's an easy league game before a champions league game i wouldnt be surprised to see things swivelled around a bit, but this would not just far into the season but maybe only 3 or 4 times all season anyway. this part is subjective but terry is their best CB still surely, and this part isn't subjective, he's a better centre back than ivanovic, so why weaken your team when it isnt forced?

He wouldn't. 34 starts last season in the league. 11 starts in the CL. No international fixtures to worry about, no more David Luiz. Unless he gets injured, i can't see him not matching last seasons appearances.

i think so too. reason i went to inter for this season is this season i think mourinho feels he has a proper chance of fighting on all fronts which i never felt last season. not that i took the little horse talk that seriously but i dont think he genuinely believed they'd win the league or could win the CL, was a foundation season where any trophy was a bonus. (i reckon he really believed with inter that season too, so could affect squad use)

    Long-time listener, first-time caller.

I've been checking FFS for a couple of years but after a disastrous 2013/14 campaign, I'm craving my first ever RMT. Thank you.

    Mannone, Krul
Debuchy, Filipe Luis, Cameron, Shaw, Ben Davies
    Ramsey, Hazard, Sigurdsson, Albrighton, Puncheon
Dzeko (V), van Persie (C), Pellè

My biggest concern is that I'm left with £0 in the bank and the nagging feeling that I should have Yaya Toure (aka Mr Birthday Cake).

Thanks for that. I've been pondering the same thing ... RVP is the better player but 2mill is a big difference. But on the other hand, I can't help thinking Van Gaal will reignite RVP. Argh ... the agony of indecision has gripped and we're still a couple of weeks away from the start of the season 🙂

      welcome...
I'm not a fan of the keeper rotation there
Solid enough down back (maybe too solid)
Weaker in mids because of the defo
but you have RVP... consider roon?

Thanks. I think the switch to Rooney seems a good option after seeing the Roma result. I agree that I've only got two good midfielders (Hazard and Ramsey) but I can't see who else looks like a good investment. Any tips?

      Too much money in defence. You have 5.5, 6.0, 4.5, 6.0, 5.0 = 27.0. Downgrade Debuchy to a 4.0 for starters.

Thanks, good advice. Though I've still got an eye on Zabaleta. Can't help overloading the defence!

As you can tell from my name, I love a good football inspired pun. I'm currently thinking of having my team name as Wanna Puncheon Bro? Anyone seen any good puns lately?
