Gylfi Sigurdsson emerges from the bench to score twice in Swansea’s win over Plymouth. Stevan Jovetic bags a brace as City hammer AC Milan, Diego Costa nets on his Chelsea debut, Raheem Sterling grabs Liverpool’s winner against Olympiakos, whilst a Gary Taylor-Fletcher strike earns Leicester victory over Everton:

Sigurdsson at the Double
The Icelandic international needed just seven minutes of his second debut for the Swans to serve notice of his Fantasy potential for the season ahead. Emerging from the bench on 65 minutes, Sigurdsson was immediately handed dead-ball duties for the Welsh side and his deflected corner was forced home by Jordi Amat before he struck twice – the second courtesy of a superb long-range free-kick – in a convincing 4-0 win.

After the match, Garry Monk (who will be without Leon Britton and Marvin Emnes for the start of the season due to knee injuries) lavished praise on the Icelandic international after a sparkling display. Priced at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Sigurdsson now looks set to pick up in ownership ahead of a schedule which hands Swansea four strong home fixtures and a trip to Sunderland in the opening seven Gameweeks:

“From the start of the summer, he was a player I really wanted to bring in straight away. He’s a top player – actually a better player than when he was first here. He’s come in and contributed straight away today. He adds quality to our squad, which is what we want. It helps that he already knows how this club works. He knows me well, as well as a few of the boys, so in terms of settling in, that will help him.”

Costa Opens Blues Account
Chelsea’s summer signing from Atletico Madrid netted on his debut as Jose Mourinho’s side came from behind to defeat Slovenian outfit NK Olimpija Ljubljana 2-1. Chelsea started in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Cesc Fabregas fielded in the double-pivot alongside Nemanja Matic, before a change in tactics saw them shift to 4-3-3, with the former Arsenal skipper afforded more license to break forward. As a result, Fabregas – who took most of his side’s corners when on the pitch – supplied the pass for Costa’s first goal for the club before Kurt Zouma notched the winner from close-range just after the hour mark. In defence, Mourinho started with Cesar Azpilicueta and Filipe Luis as his full-backs but the Blues boss fielded eight defenders over the course of the 90 minutes, meaning Fantasy managers are no closer to ascertaining his preferred backline ahead of the new campaign.

Jovetic Bags a Brace in City Rout
The Premier League champions look to have quickly found their form after demolishing AC Milan 5-1 last night. Manuel Pellegrini utilised his non-World Cup players for the showdown and forgotten man Stevan Jovetic caught the eye with a two-goal haul against the Italians to suggest he’s finally put his injury woes behind him and offer a valid option to City for the start of the season, with Alvaro Negredo set for months on the sidelines. Elsewhere, Jesus Navas maintained his impressive pre-season form with a goal and assist to stake a claim for inclusion, whilst fellow wide man Scott Sinclair was afforded the full 90 minutes and also managed to get amongst the goals.

After the match, Pellegrini talked up Jovetic’s prospects for the season ahead – prior to last night, the former Fiorentina forward was far off the Fantasy radar after mustering a mere just two league starts in his debut campaign:

“Well Stevan had a very bad luck last year, he had a lot of injuries the whole year, so it’s very difficult for a player to have an important performance when he cannot play three games in a row. In this year he starts the pre-season – well he finished last as well – playing well and I think that now he works continually every day he will demonstrate why he’s here in Manchester City because I think he’s a very good player.”

Sterling Fires Reds to Victory
Brendan Rodgers fielded a number of his key players as Liverpool narrowly beat Greek side Olympiakos 1-0. Regulars such as Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson, Steven Gerrard, Jordan Henderson, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling all started the match – the latter two combined for the Merseysiders’ match-winner with just over five minutes on the clock, as Sterling vindicated the decision of the 16% FPL managers who already have him on board. New boys Emre Can and Lazar Markovic were also named in the XI – intriguingly, the former (at 5.5 in FPL) was fielded as the most advanced central midfielder in a 4-3-3 and looks one to monitor if Rodgers views him as a regular starter.

After the game, though, the Reds boss was admitted he was particularly pleased with the display of his front three as he looks ahead to the first season of the post-Luis Suarez era:

“I’ve seen a difference in Daniel since he came back. He has obviously got confidence from the World Cup and his season last year. I think he’s ready to take on the mantle. He got 20-odd goals last season so he’s a striker of great value. Markovic will only get better and better. He showed great strength when he burst through and hopefully later on when he picks up that speed and sharpness in his game, he’ll go on and finish that. We’ve got good speed. Raheem Sterling is always a threat – he’s a joy to watch. I thought those three were really exciting.”

Taylor-Fletcher Gives Foxes the Edge
A Gary Taylor-Fletcher goal was enough to give Leicester victory over Everton in a rehearsal for both clubs’ Gameweek 1 showdown. Nigel Pearson named a strong starting line-up, fielding new signing Leonardo Ulloa alongside David Nugent in a 4-4-2, with Marc Albrighton fielded on the flank, whilst Liam Moore (4.0 in FPL) was handed the full 90 minutes alongside skipper Wes Morgan at centre-half. The Foxes boss made numerous changes at the break and switched to a 4-2-3-1 as the Championship winners held on to clinch victory.

After the game, Pearson explained his decision to field both Moore and Morgan for the entire match, after he handed 18 others 45 minutes apiece:

“It’s a numbers game. We’ve come with a group of players and we’re doubled up in some areas but not others. Centre-backs won’t run as far as central midfield players or wide players, so there is some thought that goes into it, but they’re both very fit lads capable of playing 90 minutes. It’s valuable time to re-sharpen their own games.”

For Everton, Roberto Martinez afforded 20 players game time in their second friendly of the summer. With the club’s World Cup players still yet to feature, and Seamus Coleman omitted from the clash due to a hamstring concern, the Toffees boss fielded a mixture of first-teamers, fringe players and youngsters. The likes of Sylvain Distin, Aiden McGeady, Gareth Barry and Steven Pienaar were all handed game time as Martinez switched from 4-2-3-1 (with Steven Naismith as the lone striker) to an experimental 3-4-3 after the break but the Merseysiders were unable to find a way past Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal.

Best wait and see where Remy ends up first of all. And I personally would go DDG over Scz and drop Foster to a 4.0 non-playing keeper.

Then lastly I would drop Komp (fixtures/City not great defensively) and upgrade either Albrighton or Marney to a decent player (Siggy/Tadic?).

-Foster/Szcesny = No. Szcesny MAY not play, and if you go for a 5.5 keeper, the second keeper should be 4.0
-Strong defence. But I would downgrade Kompany for Jones
-To unbalanced attacking wise (Mid and Att). Downgrade Hazard,Sanchez or Costa (Costa IMO), and upgrade albrighton/marney.
Im not a fan of going for Remy either, if he stays at QPR.

I would buy a United player or two as well

I used to play a form of 6-2-2 with my Barnet team in the prem.

        1-3-1-2-1-2

Sweeper and Libero in the same team, with 3 standard CB's. Two wide players, CAM and two forwards. All the opponents kept trying to beat them with crosses as there was loads of space out wide. An actual person would realise that trying to beat five tall guys in the box is futile.

Finally liking the look of my team. Any comments most welcome:

    ---------------------DDG - 4.0 ------------------------
    Debuchy - Bavies - Cameron - Naylor - Wisdom
    Sanchez - Mata - Tadic - Siggy - Albrighton
    -------------Roon - Dzeko - Costa---------------

Thinking that the strong point is definitely that front 3. Stoke/Swans offer a nice rotation for that 3rd DFer spot. I'm taking a risk on Costa & Tadic after watching a fair few vids on the pair and considering that they will players who are 90minuters every game and very important to their respective teams.

Wisdom/Albrighton might change depending on who's looking best in pre-season (have got my eyes on Moore/Upson/Marney as well)

I know Markovic is not nailed on but with Lallana injured I see Rodgers starting 4-3-3 with Markovic, Sterling and Sturridge as the front three with Lambert on the bench and Coutinho at the front of a diamond with Henderson/Can and Gerrard. I think for the first 3 weeks atleast Markovic could be a decent punt at 7.5m

Finding it so difficult to pick the right mid-priced midfielder.

Have 6.0 left and I'm torn between Sigurdsson and Snodgrass.

Snodgrass might have some set-pieces and has good attacking threat with a great opening 5 games.
Sigurdsson should also have some set-pieces but with trickier fixtures (probably the better form though) 😕

    Thoughts?

If they played all the time Silva all day long. But I've got Nasri as he has the best chance of playing every game. Silva's injury isn't going to go away, it's always going to have to be managed so he won't ever play 3 games in a week. Dseko is clearly a big rotation risk but proven when he plays and does often score from the bench.

Fantasy Football and Game Theory...How to Beat the Crowd

Here's a link to a post by Portsmouth Bubblejet who makes interesting comments that sparked an interesting discussion. (I don't think he's picked the best examples but that's irrelevant). This post was marked +27 but I wonder how many people read it?

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/07/23/sky-sports-focus-player-list-analysis-defenders/?hc_page=4#hc_comment_7636922

Further down we find a post by Triggerlips (who's better at fantasy football than me)...TL says "Its not just last year, the template team rarely does anyone any good, even if it performs well you are only equal with everyone else"...nevertheless I disagree with TL as I'll explain shortly

Later we find a post by Snevitz (best finish 4k) who says "I'm pretty sure there are a few people quietly slipping Aguero/Toure/Sturridge into their drafts despite them not being popular picks" and he continues "Anyone who goes for a front line of Tadic, Sanchez, Fabregas, De Jong, Pelle, Costa, Remy deserves the poor score that they will get"...I broadly agree with Snevitz except that I wouldn't say this team is certain to fail

OCProdigy (best finish 340k) replies "that team could actually score extremely well in the first few weeks. I don't see the issue with it"

Well this is a competition folks...it's me against you...and I'm going to beat most of you (I hope)...and I'm going to tell you how

I'm going to beat you by picking a 100% template team ALL SEASON...EXCEPT that I won't be scared to triple-up on a team if they have good players with good fixtures

I've no more idea than any of you who's going to score the points but I'm going to let you guys vary from the template...I'm going to play the long game...picking quality players with good fixtures at all times

Sometimes when you vary from the popular picks your choices will be successful...other times some of you will pick somebody with rough fixtures arguing that they are "fixture-proof"...or maybe you're the sort of guy who likes to be fancy and you'll pick a Kolarov here or a Januzai there...or maybe you think gambling with your captain "on a hunch" is a good idea...or maybe you're worried that you don't have "Arsenal cover" and pick your team accordingly. Or you're the sort of person who sells Suarez "because he hasn't scored for 2 matches". All this muddled thinking is a weakness in your game.

But the big reason that I will try very hard to pick a template team at the start of the season is a question of game theory. You need to know who your opponents are. My opponents are not random office workers. My opponents are people like Triggerlips and Snevitz. We have 15 free transfers this "week". I want 15 tried and trusted players who are popular with my rivals. If they do badly my rivals will also struggle to score well and my season will not be ruined.

But Triggerlips has a better record than me...perhaps he tries harder than me?...perhaps he's smarter than me?...even so I'm sure I'll beat most of you. I'll make some mistakes and I'll have my disasters when I pick good players who score badly. But you'll make your mistakes too. Varying from the most popular players chosen by your opponents is a mistake. Varying from the popular team structures is a mistake. Gambles like these will sometimes work well. But it's a long season. You won't always get lucky.

At some point last season, the main points scorers from the Saturday games were what was called "template" (something like Ramsey, Coleman and Sturridge). I had all three or four of them and assumed everyone else did too. But I finished the day with a top 10K GW rank.

It seems counter-intuitive but having ALL of the template chaps is actually quite rare.

A template team is only a snapshot of any particular time
The skill is in successfully predicting what the template will be in 3-4 weeks time and organising your transfers to arrive at it in time

At the moment we are all on wild card with the exact same amount of funds so the template will be very clearly defined - but its not something to be concerned about, as long as you can see where it leads to

      Thanks for the mention!
This is what I was getting at - you don't do well at FPL by going out on a limb and picking obscure players, you just have to be able to fit more of the highest scoring players in than most other people.
Any one of the new players could end up with the highest points per game per million spent but you can't tell which until the season starts. Once it has started I will be transferring in whoever does well as it will increase my value and I obviously want in-form players - flexibility is key early on which is why you need a mixture of different priced players in each position.
      Good luck Dribbler
