Liverpool continued to strengthen their attacking options for the season ahead with the signing of Lazar Markovic from Benfica last month. The 20-year-old arrives on a long-term contract for a fee believed to be in the region of £20m and was the fourth new face to arrive at Anfield, following Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Emre Can to the club.

Discussing the new boy’s arrival with the club’s official website, Brendan Rodgers hailed Markovic’s versatility as a key factor as the Reds look to restructure in the final third following the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona:

“This is an exciting signing for us and one that improves our squad, in terms of attacking options, for the coming season. He was hugely impressive for Benfica last season and has proved he has the ability to produce the goods in European competition as well, which will be important for us. Lazar is flexible to play a number of positions, but I like the way he attacks games and is always positive and looking to make something happen. He will fit in with the way we play at Liverpool.”

The History

Starting off in the Borac Cacak youth system, the prodigious Markovic was snapped up by Partizan Belgrade as a 12-year-old back in 2006. Just a couple of months after his seventeenth birthday, the winger was handed his first-team debut at the end of the 2010/11 campaign and, quickly establishing himself as a key first-team figure, proceeded to rack up 14 goals and 16 assists in 65 matches over all competitions.

As a result of his exploits out wide, the youngster earned a place in the Serbian top-flight’s Team of the Year in his two full seasons at the club before Benfica came calling last summer. The versatile Markovic played 48 times in his only campaign for the Portuguese outfit and, fielded on either the right or left flank, went on to produce seven goals and four assists in 48 appearances over all competitions, helping his side reach the Europa League Final and clinch a domestic treble.

At international level, Markovic played for Serbia’s youth sides on a total of 17 occasions and notched two goals before being handed his senior debut in February 2012. To date, the winger has turned out six times for his nation and found the net twice.

The Prospects

As pre-season unfolds, events seem to have fallen in Markovic’s favour and suggest he could start the campaign in Rodgers’ first XI. Suarez’ departure, allied with a six-week lay-off for Lallana and an abandoned bid for Loic Remy certainly lessen the competition for places and hand the 20-year-old a platform to impress. The new boy revealed his manager has already hinted at his likely role for the upcoming campaign:

“The left side is preferable, but I will play wherever I am asked. I do not mind. I have spoken with the manager. He told me what position I will be playing in the team and I am here to fulfil his expectations. “

Fielded on the left of a front three alongside Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling in his debut against Olympiacos at the weekend, Markovic’s lightning pace and trickery seem ideal for Rodgers’ counter-attacking approach, as the Reds look to Steven Gerrard’s distribution from a deep-lying central role to spark quick transitions in the final third. Despite failing to find the net over his 45-minute appearance, the new boy was the subject of his manager’s post-match praise:

“Markovic will only get better and better. He showed great strength when he burst through and hopefully later on when he picks up that speed and sharpness in his game, he’ll go on and finish that.”

A lack of top-level experience, allied with a mediocre scoring record, suggests the youngster is far from the finished product, though. It may well be that by the time Rodgers’ shopping spree has come to an end, and the likes of Lallana is fully fit, the Serbian will be afforded more time to develop over the course of the campaign, as Liverpool look to utilise the strength and depth of their squad on across domestic and European competitions.

As Sterling’s rise to Fantasy prominence showed last season, though, age is not a factor in Rodgers’ thinking. There’s no doubt that, to some degree, Markovic’s game time will be managed (Sterling was afforded 24 starts last term, with a further nine appearances off the bench) but if he can make an immediate impact at the start of the season, the Serbian – who comes in at 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League and 7.2 in the Sky Sports game – could quickly become a more prominent player than many expect. With so many nailed-on options available for a similar price elsewhere, and the nailed-on Jordan Henderson (6.0) stepping up his attacking contribution in last night’s win over Man City, few will be willing to take the initial plunge, allowing the wide man time to settle ahead of a tricky opening schedule which sees the Merseysiders make their way to City and Spurs in the first three Gameweeks.

I was very surprised to come back to every man and his dog including Rooney in their teams. I assumed RVP would still be popular. I guess it shows that people still pay a lot of attention to pre-season.

Rooney was the second highest scoring forward in the game (excluding Suarez), in a poor Utd side, when not always being played as a striker. At 10.5m he is a steal.

Thanks, I wouldn't be playing him for his poor home fixtures and he rotates around the other players really well.
I don't think a Chelsea defender is essential because Ivanovic will definitely get game time and it's very difficult to call who will get dropped.

I have £25m for my defence and I've narrowed it down to two options....

    1) P.Jones, Debuchy, Huth, Ward, £4m

Playing 3 out 4 gives me great fixtures every week for the first 10 weeks as detailed in my post here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/7594360

    2) Terry, P.Jones, Cameron, Taylor, £4m

I get Terry who I think will be the highest scoring defender this season.

I decided that I had two ways to rate the potential points from these defences.
The obvious way is Player Projections in the members area which comes out at 58.4 vs 61.5 points.
The other way was to look at cleansheets in the corresponding fixtures last season. I awarded six points for a cleansheet and two for anything else. This does not take into account attacking threat or bonus points and involved substituting in the promoted sides last year as indicators for promoted sides this year. Maybe not the greatest way of measuring it but the result 76 vs 60 in favour of option 1.

Overall I'm leaning towards option 1 as the players are more nailed on and I get a decent sub on the bench each week (although with a bad fixture). If I do go for this option then I think I need to stick with these players (barring injuries) for the first 8 weeks meaning that I could miss out on price increases for other defenders, however that leaves me plenty of transfers to play around with my high value mid and att.

Which option would you go for?

Anyone tempted by Henderson at 6M? Scored last night and have seen Rodgers quoted as saying he should be aiming for 10 goals this season. With Gerrard holding more as he gets slower could Jordan be this season's Ramsey? I currently have Sterling but thinking I could save 2.5m and reinvest elsewhere.

Any thoughts on few players who may be overlooked around here?
Bacuna- on set pieces, will probably play in midfield this season with more open play attacking threat. 5 goals in 26 games last season and a reasonable chance of being on pens whilst Benteke is out.

Henderson- with Cans arrival and Gerrard playing deeper he can arrive from deep a la Ramsey especially with Suarez no longer filling that space in behind Sturridge. Coutinho has a tendency to drop deeper and wider leaving this space to be exploited. Promising signs vs City yesterday.

Cresswell- Assist potential to Valencia/Carroll. Is he on some set pieces?

Ibe- potentially this years Januzaj, annoying 1 pointers coupled with the odd goal and assist is not too bad for a 4.5.

Bent- proven 15 goal a season striker when handed starts and motivated. 5 mil could be a bargain until Benteke returns.

Podolski- only 7.5 is tempting but not sure he will play. If he does he has proved he can outshine Giroud on several occasions last season. Might be a good pick until the return of Wallcott.

At the moment I would say so but with Ozil being eased back in, Cazorla potentially being sold, wallcott and the ox injured and wilshere dropping back in to one of the deeper midfield roles he could get some game time. If he does I would fancy him over Remy/Pelle.

Henderson is definitely giving me pause for thought. Bacuna's price hike to 5.5 is off-putting, Bent definitely has potential to be a bargain 3rd striker.

If Bacuna plays in midfield 5.5 could be good value as he will offer attacking threat as well as set pieces. Could score 7-10 goals and pick up the odd assist. Good value for 5.5.

Bit of a different team, 3-5-2 formation

    Krul ( Elliot )

    Fillipe Luis - Chester - Cameron ( 4.0, 4.0 )

    Mata - Nasri - Sanchez - Fabregas - Siggy

    Costa - Rooney (Zamora)

As much as i don't want to sacrifice one of Hazard/Fabregas, but due to the lack of striker options (going off Dzeko a bit) i can't look past a Rooney-Costa strikerforce right now.

Thoughts on this one? My second time tinkering since FPL opened...

    DDG
    Cahill Cameron Simpson
    Hazard Mata Fabregas Siggy
    Rooney Dzeko Giroud

    4.0 Albrighton Chester Mariappa

Not sure how good the cheap defenders rotate, just tried to find some 4.5's that looked decent.

Chester to Neil Taylor would be nice. You'd have the CPL/QPR rotation and the STK/SWA which are the two best imo. The only thing is doubts over Mariappa and Cameron gametime.

They don't play 5 at the back and have more than enough players for all the other positions already.
Are you suggesting that Azpi should start right mid ahead of Willian, Oscar and Schurrle?
