Swansea boss Garry Monk continued to restructure his first-team squad last week with the acquisiton of winger Jefferson Montero from Mexican side Morelia. The 24-year-old rolls up to the Liberty on a four-year contract and is the sixth new face so far, following the arrival of Lukasz Fabianski, Bafetimbi Gomis, Marvin Emnes, Stephen Kingsley and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

In an interview with the club’s official website, Monk was quick to emphasise that the speedy Ecuadorian will add new weaponry to the Swans’ attack for the campaign ahead:

“We have watched Jefferson in depth and a lot of work went on behind the scenes to make the deal happen. He has a lot of quality and with the attributes he has he adds another dimension to our game. The ideal situation for me is that I have different types of players in the same position because in a game I may need to use a different approach. Jefferson certainly offers us something different, and I’m really happy he is here.”

The History

Montero progressed through the youth ranks at Emelec before making his senior debut in 2007. Two goals and 22 appearances later, he was on his way to Independiente in Ecuador’s Second Division and, after a brief loan stint with Dorados (five matches, one goal) he proceeded to net 19 times in 37 matches for his parent club.

Signed by Spanish outfit Villarreal as a 20-year-old, Montero spent his first year with the club’s B side, where 10 goals in 32 appearances led to his promotion to the senior squad in time for the 2010/11 campaign. His time in La Liga was far from successful, though. Farmed out on loan to Levante (11 appearances) and Real Betis (a goal and three assists from 33 matches), he subsequently turned out on 20 occasions for Villarreal, delivering a couple of goals and three assists, before he was sold to Morelia in June 2012.

Over a couple of seasons with the Mexican club, Montero’s output was fairly modest. The wide man chipped in with 14 goals and 12 assists in 65 appearances across all competitions before Monk made his move last week. On the international scene, Montero has already been capped 43 times by Ecuador and found the net on eight occasions.

The Prospects

The Ecuadorian’s arrival puts real question marks over the pitch time of Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge out wide, as Monk looks to put his own stamp on the Swansea first-team in his first full season at the helm.

Handed a permanent deal after steering the club to safety last term, the former centre-half introduced a slightly more direct approach than predecessor Michael Laudrup and resultantly saw his side notch 1.8 goals per game over his 14 league fixtures in charge, compared to 1.2 under the Dane’s guidance.

Whilst Montero’s blistering pace certainly fits in with Monk’s approach, the return of fellow midfielder Sigurdsson to the club should ensure the Ecuador international remains off Fantasy radars ahead of the season kick-off. As mentioned in the recent Sigurdsson Moving Target article, the playmaker averaged 5.7 FPL points per game during his first spell with the Welsh outfit and has immediately found his form – bagging a brace in his second debut, he’s also been handed dead-ball duties and, coming in at 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (the same price as Montero) has the potential to be a real bargain.

It should be noted that Montero has also impressed in pre-season, shining in the recent 2-0 win at Exeter, with Monk again underlining his pace as a key factor…

“I think Jefferson showed glimpses in that opening 45 minutes at Exeter of what he can do. He’s great…Pace always hurts teams. Anyone who’s quick and has got half a brain about them can cause people problems. Jefferson’s got very good pace and quality about him as well. And for a player who’s so young, he’s got experience as well. The World Cup’s been a great experience for him. If he can bring the momentum he’s got from that into the Premier League it’ll be great.”

Such comments suggest that Montero will immediately be central to Monk’s plans for the new campaign, cementing him as a differential ahead of a kind opening schedule for the Swans. Currently owned by just 0.3% of FPL managers, the winger welcomes Burnley, West Brom, Stoke and Newcastle to the Liberty in the first seven Gameweeks and also faces a trip to Sunderland during that period. While there is clear early promise, Montero will need to excel over a consistent period if he is to oust Sigurdsson as the major source of Fantasy points in Swansea’s midfield.

Mind having a look at my Shy team D1sable?
        Fabianski
        Delaney, Debuchy, Davies , PVA
        Yaya , Ramsey , Hazard , Sidwell
        Rvp, Dzeko
I know there are a few worries at the back and Rvp can be anyone,
I'm trying to take it serious tho I feel the complicated (c) rule is where it's at,

I have in previous years but I usually end up abandoning it. Some of my mates are doing a cash league on there so I might join this year and pay more attention. Its either that or UFPL. I can't manage 3 teams where money is at stake 😆

Same here played Sky in the past but I dislike the (c) rules,
UFPL is great but as you say it's all about time and commitment.

Yep looks v good. I would make sure you have the money in the bank for Dzeko -> any of the top strikers for captain swaps.

          Think Sidwell is great value.
Not sure about Davies/Delaney play time although i have Delaney currently.

Would try and get a budget mid like Bacuna/Jwp over a budget Def like PVA. They score far more than cheap def.

The most 'generic' team from ownership at this point is as follows

    ---------------Krul
    Shaw | Debuchy | Lovren | Vlaar
    ----Hazard | Sanchez | Barkley
    ----Sturridge | Rooney | Remy

Myhill | Bruce - Albrighton - El Hamadi

    How FPL-template is your team?
How many players from these do you have?
Is it good / bad that you have those amount of template players?

Yep i likey, a lot spent of Def but you have some good value options elsewhere, could work out. Maybe downgrade one of your 4.5 (as they wont often play) and upgrade Shelv to Siggy or your other 4.5 to a 5.0.

Maybe. Might look at how often the 4.5s are likely to play. Shelvey could be almost as good as Siggy. But Siggy could be amazing.... Don't see particularly compelling defenders at 5.0

at fiorentina he was one of the top 3 players in serie A.
last year he was injured whole year round
now he is fit and banging them in like a madman

With Kun unfit and Negredo out he'll start imo

            yes there is.

Kun is unlikely to play gw1
Jovetic is killing it pre season and will get chances early while kun is eased in
dzeko honestly ain't a great player, jovetic could oust him easily

i, and most others will be wildcarding early anyway and jovetic should get decent enough mins the first few gws.

For Jovetic to be a decent pick for more than a week or so you're relying on Aguero to get injured. Not the rarest of occurences but you get my point.

A partnership of either Kun/Jovetic with Dzeko/Negredo makes more sense in terms of the characteristics of the players. Negredo is injured, making Dzeko fairy safe and Aguero is the undisputed number 1.

I still think Jones is (should be) the safest pick from the CBs.

As a Utd fan who watches every game religiously, I can safely say Jones is by far our most talented CB, and with his age he will only get better as well. LVG is well-known for placing his faith in young players too.

Jones is nailed IF hes fit. Can fill in at RWB or CM if necessary too. Shaw still the best option for me, especially if hes not fit as he will likely be subbed early with hopefully a cleanie in the bag!

    Chaps,

I signed up for a membership last year, but really didn't see the benefits in the membership. Am I doing something wrong here. I couldn't seem to get the RMT to work. And the "ones to watch" tables for "assists" "explosion imminent" etc. seemed a bit out of date.

Can someone elaborate upon why i should join again this year, and possibly point me in the right direction of the benefits. Perhaps I was just a bit clueless.

I'm weighing this up, and opta membership.

    Thanks,

For me, the interactive season ticker is worth the membership price alone. And then the other thing I use is the comparison tool, which is really useful if you can't decide between two players.

Team defensive stats are great to see who has been riding their luck and who has been unlucky to concede as many as they have.

RMT pretty straight forward just put in your team id and it will predict your score. Make some changes and it will predict the impact of those changes.

Comparison tool pulls opta stats i believe.

RMT helps decipher which teams have better fixtures over a defined period.

The tables you mention are set up by other members, a bit hit and miss.

Members articles are great for the lazy player like myself as does relevant stat research for you.

I also view it as a contribution to keep the site alive and well.

Hundreds of us are signing up everyday.

The winner of last year has just written to articles on how it helped him win

      Discount offer runs out soon

What are you waiting for? 🙂

Maybe undervaluing what 12.5 pounds is worth around the world.... but if you have time to be spending on fantasy football and hanging around commenting on this site my bet is that its worth maybe a a week's coffee's at best. If you like stats the members area adds a lot of value. The custom tables are great and fairly intuitive to use. Think they even publish some videos if you are struggling. RMT is great even if you don't like stats, I mean it basically takes a really complex set of stats and tells you what you need to know: who your best captain is, who to bench and who the top scoring players are expected to be for the week and 6 weeks so you can plan your transfer.

Membership seems like a no brainer if you want a real shot at doing well in this game

hehe that makes no sense - if you think he will flop then don't even consider him!

cazorla could be an interesting punt while wally is still out

So, are we all super concerned about Bavies now that Rose has signed a new contract? What's the mood in the community please.

Anyone else think that Clyne - Fonte - Vlaar* - Bertrand is a pretty decent defence?

If you act now you could have it in FPL 😉

But seriously, if they spend sensibly then I think rumours of Southampton's demise have been greatly overstated! (or whatever that quote I'm mangling should be)

We could even end up with Clyne - Fonte - Rojo - Bertrand

      Which would be exceptional.

The Kruegar chat midweek made a massive difference to the Southampton faithful's mindsets. Tadic looks very, very comfortable on the ball, he won't replace Lalla's impeccable Cruyff turns, but he has mazy feet and an eye for goal.

Pretty excited to see our next few signings.

Anyone interested in Carzola or is he completely out of favour with wenger. I'll get him in if he plays a lot and impresses in the Emirates cup.
