Versus – Low to Mid-Price Midfielders

With the season now just a fortnight away, we turn our attentions to a number of kindly priced midfielders in our latest article for members. Picking the right combinations in the mid-price bracket looks crucial to a strong start and with Fantasy managers debating the merits of a number of targets, we scour the statistics to assess their previous form.

For the purpose of this article, we’ve selected seven midfielders, no more than 6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, who have proven popular picks so far and/or are set for some favourable opening fixtures – potentially affording them the chance to hand us an early-season bandwagon. Comparing their respective statistics, we also dig deeper into seasons gone by in our attempt to ascertain the best options for our initial lineups.

    Hello guys was just wondering if there wasone player in Fpl that you just have a real gut feeling about and would make a good differential or a nice punt but even taking them three tings into consideration you still find him just a tad too expensive Mine is Adebayor

        That was my point. If he was a midfielder on free kicks an pens fr 7 million we'd all be on it. But he gets clean sheet points too!

          I'm not sure everyone would have him.. He doesn't score/ assist that much. Adam Johnson got more goals and more assists than him last season, but you don't see him in anyone's team, let alone everyones.. and he's 6.5

            Thanks for the reply. See your point but I think last year was quite poor by Baines standards. I think I'm sticking with for now. Happier with him than any united defender.

          Because there's value in rotating cheap defenders, there isn't in cheap mids.

      Because you can get much better value with a good 4.5 defender and a 7.0 midfielder. Compare that against Baines + (for instance) Albrighton after the first 7 weeks.

    What is your budget spend breakdown? Mine is:

    GK: £9m
    DEF: £24m
    MID: £37.5m
    FWD: £29.5m

    This makes me wonder if I have gone too 'striker-heavy' and need to reinvest in my backline. What are your thoughts on the 'sweet spot' in terms of spreading the spend? I suppose it also depends on the formation you're going for.

      Austin would be a better option as a cheapy as he is a proven goalscorer in England whereas Pele could just be another Kezman. Personally I wouldn't take the risk.

      How nice is a defense-line off:

      DDG | Myhill
      Ferdinand | O'Shea | Bruce | Ward | Coloccini

      - Besides Bruce they are nailed on.
      - They play for good defensive sides
      - I can change DDG to Krul and add the 1.0 to upgrade someone.
      - It allows me to have a hell of a front eight.

        No not at all.

        Players like Silva in the past have proved a great source of points because they get constant steady points each week. But you wouldn't ever captain them.

          In my opinion the value you get much better value per million with a cheaper player that you must bridge this gap by captaining the 9m+ player from time to time.

      Arsenal has tough fixtures to begin with and a bunch of players that may potentially share the points FPL wise. I struggle to come up with a team that includes both two chelsea and united mids/fwds and city and arsenal covered. Bad idea to drop the Arsenal mid until we see who is the main point collector?

      What are people's opinions regarding Matic. I know he isn't the most obvious pick and his 3.1% ownership proves this, however he is pretty much a nailed on starter for Chelsea at a decent price of £5.5.

      Last season he managed 4 assists in 17 starts. He's been a key player through pre-season for Mourinho and even managed to get on the scoresheet. I know he's a pretty big punt, but I think he could offer some good returns for £5.5M
