Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere net again for Newcastle. Leonardo Ulloa bags a brace for Leicester. Lukas Jutkiewicz is at the double for Burnley, Charlie Austin is in the goals once more for QPR, while Alan Hutton fires Villa to victory at Walsall:

Toon New Boys in the Goals
Remy Cabella and Emmanuel Riviere scored for the second successive outing as Newcastle drew 2-2 at Huddersfield Town last night. In defence, Daryl Janmaat was handed his debut at right-back for the Magpies, with Mike Williamson partnering Fabricio Coloccini in the heart of defence and Massadio Haidara on the left. Pardew continued with a 4-4-2 formation, fielding Cabella and Yoan Gouffran on the flanks and with Siem de Jong missing out due to a foot problem once again, summer signings Riviere and Facundo Ferreyra led the line. That’s two goals in as many appearances for Cabella, while Riviere leads the way with three to his name so far; potentially handing us a mid-price differential option (7.0, with 1% ownership) ahead of a decent set of opening fixtures for the Tyneside team. Given that de Jong has also netted twice, the signs look promising for Pardew, with his signings already looking vital additions.

After the game, Pardew confirmed that, despite a lack of pre-season, Janmaat will be a definite starter against City in Gameweek 1:

“He is a class act. He will play for us against Man City – there’s no doubt about that. He had 60 minutes, and hopefully he’ll get 80 on Sunday, and he’ll be ready to go.”

Austin Nets Again for R’s
Harry Redknapp made just four changes from the side that defeated Shamrock Rovers 4-0 on Saturday for last night’s 2-0 triumph over Athlone Town. Danny Simpson, Steven Caulker, Nedum Onuoha, Joey Barton, Junior Hoilett, Bobby Zamora and Charlie Austin were the men to keep their places and the latter continued the form that saw him bag a brace last weekend by netting his fourth goal of the summer. Zamora chipped in with a goal and assist but despite that lowly 4.5 FPL price tag, Redknapp will surely strengthen up front before the summer transfer window closes, making the 6.0-priced Austin the stronger option ahead of home games with Hull, Sunderland and Stoke in the first five Gameweeks.

Baggies Youngsters Stake a Claim
Joleon Lescott, Sebastien Pocognoli, Gareth McAuley and James Morrison all remained sidelined through injury as Alan Irvine’s side lost 3-2 to Port Vale last night. The Baggies boss fielded a mixture of senior figures and academy graduates and lined up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Craig Gardner tucking in behind lone forward Victor Anichebe – both players picked up an assist apiece after teeing up youngsters Kemar Roofe and Bradley Garmston for the visitors’ goals. In all likelihood, though, neither of last night’s scorers look like retaining their starting berths once Irvine’s injury problems finally come to an end. Elsewhere, Andre Wisdom was again handed the full 90 minutes at right-back – whilst it raises hopes over his appeal as a 4.0 FPL option, it remains to be seen where he’ll sit in the pecking order once new boy Cristian Gamboa is ready for action.

Hutton Wins it for Villa
The Scotsman grabbed the only goal of the game as Paul Lambert’s side defeated Walsall 1-0. Farmed out on loan last term, Hutton is turning in some decent displays as a right wing-back in Villa’s 3-5-2 formation which suggests he may yet have a part to play in his manager’s plans this time around – at 4.0 in FPL, he could potentially hand us a cheap fifth defender option, though with just two favourable fixtures in the first eight, few are eyeing up the midlands side right now. Ron Vlaar watched from the stands as he builds up his match fitness, while Darren Bent joined Joe Cole on the sidelines with injury. In terms of selection, Lambert opted for Jores Okore, Ciaran Clark and Nathan Baker as the back-three, with Kieran Richardson fielded on the left of the midfield five and a front two of Gabby Agbonlahor and Andi Weimann.

Jutkiewicz at the Double
The Clarets summer signing continued his excellent pre-season by scoring both goals in a 2-2 draw with Celta Vigo. With Danny Ings missing out due to a minor calf complaint, Jutkiewicz was partnered by Ashley Barnes up front and took his tally to five for the summer; joint-top with Stevan Jovetic and Glenn Murray so far. First-choice keeper Tom Heaton made his first appearance of the summer after recovering from a calf problem, whilst Sean Dyche rolled out last season’s regular back-four – Kieran Trippier, Jason Shackell, Michael Duff and Ben Mee – ahead of the final friendly against Verona on Saturday.

After the match, the Burnley boss heaped praise on new boy Jutkiewicz, who has make a significant impact since arriving from Middlesbrough earlier in the summer. Dyche also explained Ings’ absence and dismissed suggestions the frontman could be set to depart the club:

“I thought Lukas’ first goal was an excellent finish after he showed good strength to shrug off his man. We know he is very powerful and then he had the calmness to slot it past the keeper. The second one comes from some fantastic play from Ashley Barnes and he puts a great ball across the box and Lukas is in the right place which is where you want your strikers to be…He’s (Ings) not going anywhere, he just had a knock and we had to be careful with it. We have to make sure at this stage of the season as it is vital the players come through it. Everyone knows there was a few knocks in the early part of the game programme and we had to leave people out to make sure they’re fit and well for when it really matters.”

Ulloa Bags a Braces in Foxes Canter
Leicester’s summer signing from Brighton found the net twice last night in a 3-1 win at Rotherham. Bearing in mind The Foxes played MK Dons the night before, Nigel Pearson changed his entire XI for yesterday’s encounter, with Ulloa joined by 2013/14 regulars such as Kaspar Schmeichel, Ritchie de Laet, Liam Moore, Danny Drinkwater and Anthony Knockaert – Drinkwater netted his second of the summer, though Knockaert will need monitored after being forced off with an ankle problem according to the club’s website. While Ulloa’s display will have caught the eye, David Nugent is the man in form for the Championship winners – despite being rested last night, the latter still leads the way this summer for Pearson’s side, with four goals to his name thus far.

Respect to Everton who hasn't fallen into that category. Managed to keep Barkley for long term and even signing Lukaku and keeping the rest of their first team. Fellaini went but that was an amazing deal, for Everton i.e.

I am leaning toward this, but the lack of forward options make me want Costa just because he is a nice solid option to take up a striker spot. The likes of Giroud, Dzeko, Lukaku, Ade are all a bit dodgy in one way or another.

It's a complete myth that Mourinho teams don't score many goals. And if you think that a team with the likes of Hazard, Fabregas, Costa, Schurrle, Oscar & Willian aren't going to score many goals, you're daft.

                      Other stats:

                      Goals scored:

                      PL:
                      Chelsea 04/05 and 05/06 (Mourinho): 72 x2
                      Man City 11/12 (Mancini) 13/14 (Pellegrini): 93, 103
                      Man Utd 10/11 and 12/13 (Fergie): 80, 86

                      Serie A:
                      Inter Milan 08/09, 09/10 (Mourinho): 70, 75
                      Juventus 13/14 (Conte): 80

Conclusion: They will definitely score goals and a double investment IMO isn't a bad idea to start with but they don't get as many as other teams so it's not really a myth and a treble up seems overkill for me at least.

No one doubts that they will score goals and are worth investment. Costa and a Mid seems perfectly reasonable. I just can't see the sense in gambling £30m on ONE teams attack. Not to mention it stops you having a part of the strongest defence in the league.

                        Rookie stuff IMO

Tactically leaving out his time at Madrid there? 😉 Serie A is notorious for lacking goals. Look at the years imbetween those you've used there. ~70 goals is the standard total.

To be fair, even at Madrid Mourinho's team weren't really thrashing teams - only on a few occasions. Bearing in mind the squad he had and the poor overall quality of La Liga, I'd say it's something to worry about.

Why? Are you falling for the 'park the bus' myth that follows Mourinho around? Yes his teams are primarily good at defending, but history shows us that his teams also score many goals. They scored more goals than Arsenal last season and that was one of the worst attacking Chelsea sides I've seen. The side is much much improved this season.

So here's my team setup for GW1:

    ---------------------------Foster(SUN)---------------------------

    -------Evans(SWA)---Huth(AVL)---Caulker(HUL)-------

    Hazard(bur)---Mata(SWA)---Tadic(liv)---de Jong(mci)

    --------Rooney(SWA)---Giroud(CPL)---Pelle(liv)--------

    Bench: Krul(mci)---Sigurdsson(mun)---Chester(qpr)---Clyne(liv)

I'm happy with my defence rotation - I've looked at long term (10 GWs), but if needs be, it carries me with a strong team through to a possible WC during the international break.

I've been battling with the following changes...
    Evans > Cahill
    Mata > Sanchez
    Pelle > Bojan
    Sigurdsson > Young
...but I can't bring myself to do it.

or...downgrade Mata > Young and upgrade Pelle > pretty much anyone!

    Thoughts most welcome!

Check Arsenal's fixtures, do you want Debuchy from the start? Try and get a Chelsea defender. I really like the midfield, you've gone for mfs "in the hole", which is where I think a lot of bonus points under the new system lie. Will Zamora start? Could you find funds to upgrade Giroud to a nailed on striker? Maybe Lukaku

( I like Everton fixtures from round 8. ) ... and one question for you.... I see that you are fan of Everton... Is Jagielka going to be nailed in XI ?

And yes, barring injury Jagielka will start. I suspect Stones will rotate with Distin with a view to replacing him in the line up long term. I would say watch out for how we line up in the Europa league. I suspect we will blood youngsters in it and save the likes if Jags for the league, but definitely something to be aware of.

What do you know about some potentional new name in Everton.... Do you think that Martinez is going to buy some new players...? On which position? And what do you think about Naismith role in team....? 20-30 min per game?

Naismith will get game time. He suffered under Moyes who played him oop as a winger. Martinez has him up front. He's got good movement and knows where the net is. Having said that, Lukaku is the main man and we tend to play a lone striker. He might start the odd game, but I suspect will mostly play from the bench or in cups/Europa. You never know though, Martinez might spring a tactical surprise, time will tell.

It's good to be worried, but I think Ramsey is set to have a great season. Fully rested, raring to go, looks really lively in friendlies and has been experimented with in the hole. Just keep an eye on sanchez, you can always get him in if he starts to take off, but I can't see him scoring significantly more points than the rest of Arsenal's team to justify the extra ££.

I've gone off DDG. He has the potential to be like Mignolet was last year. There will be a few 5.0 GKs who will outscore him.

I don't get this whole, 'Chelsea don't score goals' thing. They scored more than Arsenal last year and they didn't even have any half-decent strikers. 6 - 0 vs Arsenal, 4 - 0 vs Spurs, 3 - 1 vs Utd

Who's saying Chelsea don't score goals? They'll come flying out of the blocks this season, they always shore up towards the end but they start off all guns firing under Mourinho.

Costa and Fabregas will give teams something to think about rather than just sticking 4 men on Hazard every game. I expect the goals to flow. People expecting more on Arsenal against CPL, eve Rather than Chelsea bur, LEI for attacking returns need to look again imo

For me, there's no debate between Ramsey or Sanchez.

Yes, Ramsey is a great player and is part of (almost) every chance that is created, but there's no denying that Sanchez is there to score goals. If it so happens that Sanchez does not turn out to be the player I am (or we are) expecting, it is an extremely easy downgrade to Ramsey, which leaves about 1.5m to allocate elsewhere. Shifting from Ramsey to Sanchez will be much more difficult if not impossible (without a hit or two).

lol impossible? You get need to have the cash in the bank and it's a straight swap.

As it happens i agree with you but just worry about STARTING with Sanchez. I don't think he's a cert to start GW1 by any means

I always like to... flexibility is king at this stage of the season with so many unknowns. Plus there are so many 'value' players at this point that it's easy to get a £100m team without actually spending £100m 😉

I respectfully disagree. It comes down to whether you think Ramsey will kick on from last season. He's looked lively in friendlies, is fully rested and has even been tried out in the hole. Whereas Wenger has admitted it may take time for Sanchez to gel with the team. As for the extra 1.5m outlay, you need to ask yourself whether he will score substantially more points than either Ramsey/Walcott/Ozil etc to justify siphoning that investment from other areas of the team. I think, with the way Arsenal play, they won't really have a stand out points scorer and Ramsey's price will make him the better pick. Of course, now Sanchez will probably score a hat-trick first game.

Yeah, I agree that Ramsey could be the better option. What I was saying is that I just would rather downgrade if that happens to be the case rather than find a way to upgrade if Sanchez gets off to a flying start!

How many people already have their first transfer planned?

Chelsea's recent European success has meant that they have started the last two seasons with a DGW followed by a blank. Last season I started with Terry, Hazard and Lukaku and planned to sell two of them in the first two GWs. Any injuries can scupper these best laid plans and can bring Wildcards into play. I think that the absence of an early DGW and blank will result in less pre-planned transfers and subsequently less pressure to WC early when things go wrong, unless a large number of bandwagons emerge in the first couple of GWs.

Typically I try and plan my transfers 2 to 3 weeks ahead. However, this is the first time I will go into GW1 without my first transfer already planned.

Does anyone already have their first transfer planned?

There isn't anyone I have for GW1 only so I'm not looking to cut anyone straight away. CPL, SWA and SOT are the only teams who I wouldn't want to use players from in GW1 but have good fixtures after and they have players I am happy benching in GW1.

Post GW1 transfer is all about reacting, to me - there are too many unknowns. Transfer planning can wait until everything has settled down.

I agree. I have just been suckered in by those early DGWs and been left with issues I knew I had to fix immediately. It's refreshing not to have those issues this season and be left with a free hand to react to events in GW1.
